For years, Brendan Cullen was known around Broken Hill as the happy man who ran thousands of ewes across tens of thousands of hectares with a smile. What they didn't see was  the guy crying in a room by himself, drinking himself stupid, thinking he wasn't providing enough for his family.Brendan calls himself a ‘glorified shepherd'.He manages a sheep station outside Broken Hill, a part of the country he loves and knows like the back of his hand. But Brendan also has another moniker: ‘the desert swimmer'.A few years ago, he was floored by a cruel bout of depression, the core of which he later understood came from an experience of childhood sexual abuse that he never spoke about. While recovering, Brendan decided to try to swim the English Channel. As his swim coach Mike ‘the Tractor' told him: swimming the channel is straightforward – you get in the water at Dover and keep swimming until you hit something, and that something is France. The swim is just one of the tools in his 'toolkit' that he uses to stay mentally well and present with his family, and his flock.Desert Swimmer is written with Paul Mitchell and published by Allen & Unwin.Content warning: this episode of Conversations contains discussion of childhood sexual abuse.Help and support is always available. ABOUT THE A BUILDING iHeartPodcasts and Imagine Entertainment Launch "The A Building" - A Riveting New Documentary Podcast About the Student Uprising That Reshaped Historically Black Colleges and Universities New Series Recounts How a Group of Morehouse College Students in 1969, Including a Young Samuel L. Jackson, Organized a Protest That Took Multiple Hostages, Among Them Martin Luther King Sr. iHeartPodcasts, the No. 1 podcast publisher globally according to Podtrac, and Brian Grazer and Ron Howard's Imagine Entertainment today announced the launch of "The A Building," a powerful new documentary podcast that revisits one of the most extraordinary and rarely told moments in American civil rights and higher-education history-an event that changed the future of Historically Black Colleges and Universities and helped define the modern era of student protest. This is the seventh title to be released from Imagine Entertainment and iHeartMedia's slate of original iHeartPodcasts. The series tells the story of the 1969 student uprising at Morehouse College, where a group of students barricaded themselves inside the administration building-known on Historically Black Colleges and Universities campuses as "The A Building." Set against the backdrop of late-1960s America, "The A Building" explores a volatile period when student activism surged nationwide amid movements for civil rights, women's rights, labor justice, and opposition to the Vietnam War. At Morehouse, the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr. intensified tensions between the administration and a student body demanding an education that reflected Black history, identity and lived experience-and ultimately led students to hold members of the Board of Trustees hostage for two days demanding reforms to curriculum and improvements to student life. One of the hostages was Martin Luther King Sr., president of the Board of Trustees. One of the student organizers was Samuel L. Jackson-years before he would become one of the most celebrated figures in Hollywood. Samuel L. Jackson and his friends devised a plan to hijack a Board of Trustees meeting to create change. A heist with a purpose. Blending immersive reenactments with firsthand testimony, archival research and expert analysis, the series unfolds with the tension of a true-crime heist-one driven by moral urgency. "The A Building" examines the risks students took, the consequences they faced, and the lasting impact of their actions on Historically Black Colleges and Universities and student activism nationwide. Co-created and produced by Menelek Lumumba and Hans Charles, the podcast traces the aftermath of the protest, including the expulsion of the students involved, the escalation of political pressure, and the pivotal moment that ultimately led Samuel L. Jackson back to Morehouse-where a change in academic focus quietly set him on the path toward acting. "This project has been years in the making, but it feels more relevant than ever," said Menelek Lumumba, co-creator and producer. "I'm grateful we have the opportunity to tell this story about young people who took action, and how their one act of protest continues to reverberate through all those involved over 50 years later." "It's an incredible, unbelievable story when you first hear it," said Hans Charles, co-creator and producer. "That it happened on a campus like Morehouse College, in a city like Atlanta, at such a volatile time, speaks to the importance of telling and exploring what is quintessential American History." "What makes the story of 'The A Building' so compelling is how clearly it reveals the purpose and power of protest," said Nathan Kloke, Executive Producer for Imagine Entertainment. "When Hans and Menelek first brought us this pivotal chapter of American history, it unfolded like a heist film-fast-paced, surprising, and utterly gripping. We're excited to bring audiences along for the ride." "This is premium documentary storytelling that connects history to the present," said Will Pearson, President of iHeartPodcasts. "'The A Building' revisits a moment that feels both historic and urgently relevant, revealing how student voices helped shape lasting institutional change." "The A Building" is part of a growing slate of documentary podcasts from iHeartPodcasts and Imagine Entertainment, including"Hello Isaac," "Unf**cking the Future," "Big Sugar," "The Tao of Muhammad Ali," "Obscurum, and "The Secret World of Roald Dahl," which explore iconic figures, cultural flashpoints, and untold stories through deep reporting and cinematic storytelling. Nathan Kloke and Kara Welker are Executive Producers for Imagine Entertainment in partnership with oddarts media. Katrina Norvell is the Executive Producer for iHeartPodcasts. "The A Building" is distributed by iHeartPodcasts and will be available weekly on Fridays on the iHeartRadio app and everywhere podcasts are heard.Episodes available here: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/imagine-audio-the-a-building/id1692268936 HOST BIOSHans Charles is an Emmy award-nominated cinematographer and writer/producer, best known for Netflix's 13TH, and Showtime's  WU-TANG CLAN: OF MICS AND MEN. They combine my two truest boyhood passions: sports and America.I was a sports-obsessed little Pittsburgh kid. When I was nine, I won a contest at a local video rental store ahead of Super Bowl XXX by correctly identifying the first points the Steelers ever scored in a Super Bowl as a safety. Before I even entered junior high, I'd been to several dozen Penn State football games with my dad, and probably about a dozen wrestling meets. I can still name the four Pittsburgh Penguins who won gold medals with the Czech Republic at the 1998 Nagano Olympics (Jaromir Jagr, Martin Straka, Jiri Slegr, and Robert Lang) as well as each of their Pittsburgh jersey numbers (68, 82, 71, 20). Filmmaker Lynette Wallworth on how nearly dying as a little girl set her on a lifelong path to interrogate out-of-body experiences, spirituality and what really happens to us when we die. When Lynette was a little girl, she had a near death experience on her grandparents' property. Her father brought her back from the brink and what she saw and experienced there, on the edge of death, came back with her.For years, Lynette struggled to talk about what happened so she made paintings and artworks trying to make sense of this experience. But when she started visiting remote Indigenous communities here in Australia and abroad, in the Amazon, that she finally found some sort of language for describing the scientifically unprovable. There, in cultures where out of body experiences are accepted as either spiritual or possible through the use of psychedelic drugs like psilocybin and ayahuasca, Lynette stopped feeling weird. Her latest film investigates how doctors in Melbourne are turning to psychedelic drugs to help ease their terminally ill patients towards death, and in the process learn that "we weren't put on earth to run around in fear".Edge of Life will be available to stream on Binge from 28 March.Currently, you can watch it via Apple TV, Amazon Prime Video, Fetch and YouTube. You can find more information about Lynette and her films at her website. This episode of Conversations was produced by Meggie Morris. Alexandria Collins does not look away from the dark. She walks straight into it, eyes open, camera steady. A filmmaker shaped by Tallahassee soil and Los Angeles light, she builds stories that breathe with heat, faith, doubt, and desire. From her early work in Emotional Intelligence and Goals N' Shit to her newest chapters behind the lens, Alexandria has committed herself to character driven storytelling that asks harder questions. “We have to face our darkness and our light, not deny any part of ourselves,” she says. And she means it.Her horror short Reborn emerged from a vision. A young girl rises from baptismal waters with power humming beneath her skin. What followed was not spectacle, but excavation. Raised in the church and fluent in its language, Alexandria flipped the hierarchy of belief on its head, questioning who holds power and who decides what is holy. That vision found a home in Hulu's Bite Size Huluween series and opened new doors. She cites Ari Aster, Jordan Peele, and Stanley Kubrick as masters of tension, architects of dread. You can feel that influence in her work, but the voice is her own. Southern. Spiritual. Unafraid.Named to the 2025 directing cohort of Film Independent's Project Involve, Alexandria stands at the intersection of craft and calling. As Founder and Executive Producer of Supernormal Ventures, she shepherds stories from spark to screen, developing shorts, features, and pilots while collaborating with platforms like Hulu and Galatea TV. She has led marketing teams, produced award winning projects, organized festival strategy, and moved fluidly between art and execution. From the 39th Student Senate at FAMU to working alongside Taye Diggs on a vertical drama, she has learned how power moves in rooms. More importantly, she has learned how to move it with intention. In this episode of Visual Intonation, we sit with a filmmaker who listens to cicadas and sermons, who reads thrillers even when they terrify her, who understands that faith and fear share a heartbeat. We talk about religion and rebellion. About building worlds from a single image. About what it means to claim authority as a Black woman director in rooms not built for you. This is a conversation about tension. About tenderness. About facing the water and choosing to rise.Alexandria Collins:ALEXANDRIA COLLINSSource: IMDbAlexandria Collins - IMDbSource: InstagramAlexandria Collins (@acscollins) • Instagram photos and videoshttps://vimeo.com/alexandriacscollinsSupport the showVisual Intonation Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/visualintonation/Vante Gregory's Website: vantegregory.comVante Gregory's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/vantegregory/ To support me on Patreon (thank you): patreon.com/visualintonations Tiktok: www.tiktok.com/@visualintonation

During the speech, Trump focused predominantly on domestic issues, but said that he would “never” allow Iran to have a nuclear weapon. His speech lasted approximately one hour and 48 minutes, surpassing last year's speech as the longest presidential address to Congress in modern history. The act of care and service through food has been incredibly important to Besha Rodell throughout her life, from her first, euphoric experience of a fancy restaurant at age eight, to the aftermath of September 11.Today Besha is the chief restaurant critic at The Age.The thrill of a fancy restaurant first imprinted itself on her psyche when she was a girl, treated to dinner at Stephanie's iconic spot in Melbourne. As a teenager, Besha was transplanted to her mother's native USA and got her first job in hospitality — and found her people — in North Carolina.A stint in New York followed, where Besha witnessed September 11 in real time.Eventually Besha started a family with her boyfriend, Ryan, in North Carolina and the family found they were living under the poverty line. They got by thanks to a government food voucher program.Shortly after, Besha's blog posts, written for fun, gained traction and she was given her first assignment in food writing.Further informationHunger Like A Thirst is published by HardieGrant. This episode was produced by Alice Moldovan. Over the course of that winter, George Washington worked to turn the army from a group of ragtag militias into a unified force -- all with the help of a mysterious Prussian general. Jody, Niki, and Kellie discuss how Valley Forge was effectively a pop-up city, and how it reflected what would come in an independent United States.Join our America250 newsletter community!
