Send a textYou can learn a lot about people from two things: the movies they consider “required viewing” and the song they swear will change the mood in a car. We start with a confession that sparks instant chaos, one of us is only now getting around to a legendary Black film, and the whole room turns into a loud, funny, very opinionated watchlist session. If you're into pop culture podcasts, Black cinema, and the kind of debates that feel like a real group chat, this one is for you. Then we lean into the impossible questions. Would you rather live with Bill Gates-level money or Michael Jordan-level aura? And if you had to erase a music giant's impact, are you cutting Quincy Jones or Babyface? We talk producer legacy, songwriting credits, era bias, and why certain R&B classics still run people's lives. The conversation naturally turns into relationship music: greatest love songs, best heartbreak tracks, and the one “close the deal” pick that says way more about you than you think. We wrap by bouncing through club anthems, a spicy Drake argument, a debate on the most intimidating athletes, and rapid-fire movie talk that ranges from iconic performances to Quentin Tarantino habits and AI-driven trailers. If you love funny podcast banter with real culture takes, press play, then subscribe, share with a friend, and leave a review. E por que, em 2026, No Calor da Noite ainda parece tão atual?• 04m11: Pauta Principal• 1h14m17: Plano Detalhe• 1h21m24: EncerramentoOuça nosso Podcast também no:• Spotify: https://cinemacao.short.gy/spotify• Apple Podcast: https://cinemacao.short.gy/apple• Android: https://cinemacao.short.gy/android• Deezer: https://cinemacao.short.gy/deezer• Amazon Music: https://cinemacao.short.gy/amazonAgradecimentos aos padrinhos: • Bruna Mercer• Charles Calisto Souza• Daniel Barbosa da Silva Feijó• Diego Alves Lima• Eloi Xavier• Flavia Sanches• Gabriela Pastori Marino• Guilherme S. His impressive credits encompass 25 years playing with Billy Preston, including most of his biggest hits; Larry Graham and Graham Central Station – as The Deacon heard on “The Jam” and other classics; Ray Charles; the Rolling Stones; Freddie Hubbard; Barry White; Quincy Jones; and many others. His Preston recordings include the mega-hits "Outa-Space," "Space Race," "Will It Go Round in Circles" and "Nothin' From Nothin'."  For more than 20 years he has led The Manny Kellough Jazz Quartet, having released CDs and a DVD under that name.  RECORDED SEPTEMEBER 2025 Hosted by Scott "DR GX" Goldfine — musicologist, author of “Everything Is on the One: The First Guide of Funk” and creator/host of the popular TRUTH IN RHYTHM podcast — "Where'd You Get Your Funk From?" is the latest interview show brought to you by FUNKNSTUFF.NET. Where'd You Get Your Funk From (WYGYFF) is an open format video and audio podcast focusing on the here and now, with a broad range of creative and artistic guests sharing fascinating stories, experiences, and perspectives. WYGYFF is a welcoming avenue to newer and independent musical acts as well as established and still active musicians of any genre; authors; filmmakers; actors; artists; collectors and archivists; radio & podcast personalities; journalists; scholars; sound techs; promoters; photographers; and other creative people. A common thread, is the show's standard opening question: Where'd you get your funk from? This is much deeper than it may seem as the answer need not be strictly about funky music, as not everyone has found the funk. It could hit on whatever type of music touches their soul or pleasure centers. Additionally, the question extends beyond music. Paraphrasing George Clinton, funk is whatever it needs to be to get you over the hump. Thus, guests can explain where they got their grit, perseverance, inspiration, talent, creativity, character or other qualities that shaped them into who they are today. This serves as a springboard into candid, in-depth and engrossing conversations. LEGAL NOTICE: All video and audio content protected by copyright.

Grief has a soundtrack—and so does joy. We open with a heartfelt salute to Catherine O'Hara, tracing how a single scene, a laugh line, or a voice can linger long after the credits, then wander into the wild terrain where memory and music meet. From Beetlejuice's dinner table possession to Home Alone's enduring comfort, we reflect on how film and song become the waypoints we use to navigate time. That doorway leads us to a run of resonant passings and timeless cuts: Demond Wilson's place in Sanford and Son and the instant-transport power of Quincy Jones' Street Beater, the exuberant lift of Three Dog Night's Joy to the World, and a trip through New York's CBGB with Television's Fred Smith, Marquee Moon, and the creative stubbornness that forged a landmark record. We trace another kind of legacy through Lynn Blakey—muse behind Left of the Dial—and the thrill of literally finding a friend on college radio while touring dark highways. Her voice in Salt Collective's recent release becomes proof that “new” music thrives when veterans share a room, a pen, and superior instincts. Along the way we spotlight the Pretenders' crisp poetry, Dolly Parton's ever-true 9 to 5, and Siouxsie and the Banshees turning the ash of Pompeii into a dance-floor revelation. These are touchstones that explain why a Pink Floyd joke can still land and why Mount Vesuvius can power a chorus. Then the lens widens to the Blitzkrieg Bop at 50—a hook first shouted in downtown clubs that now rattles stadiums and commercial breaks—and ask how simple phrases become lifelong companions. It's a tour through what lasts, why it lasts, and how it keeps finding us—left of the dial and right in the heart. If this journey moved you, tap follow, share it with a friend who loves great stories about music and film, and leave us a quick review with your favorite “timeless” track—we'll feature picks in a future mailbag.Learn Something New orRemember Something OldPlease like and follow the Music in My Shoes Facebook and Instagram pagesReach out to us at musicinmyshoes@gmail.comSend us a one-way message. What really powers a legendary music career: luck or preparation? We sit down with an entertainment attorney whose five-decade journey runs from backstage nerves with a young Olivia Newton-John to helicopter clauses for Kenny Rogers, quiet rebuilding with Reba after tragedy, and complicated exits that still end in respect. Along the way he shows how trust-first relationships turn into durable deals, why the best counsel plans five to ten years ahead, and how to spot the moment when a flashy offer serves commissions over careers. The stories move fast and cut deep. You'll hear about staging leverage to win real contract value, navigating the delicate artist–manager–lawyer triangle, and drawing bright lines when a manager's incentives collide with an artist's future. We break down how legacy contracts still drag around breakage and packaging deductions, then collide with today's internet uploads, streaming statements, and AI clones. He shares practical steps for protecting catalogs, from constant monitoring to decisive takedowns, and explains the gray zone no one foresaw: when an AI “new” master touches an old deal. What stands out most is the humanity: 50 years of brother-sister rapport with Olivia, chameleon genius and honest breakups around Quincy Jones, and the steady hands who kept doors open—Conway Twitty, Jimmy Bowen, and others who believed before the ink dried. If you care about how artists actually build a life in music—contracts that age well, teams that align incentives, and careers that sustain both stage and family—this conversation is a field guide wrapped in unforgettable moments. If this resonated, follow the show, share it with a friend, and leave a quick review so more listeners can find it. The Porcaro family is rock royalty. They made everything they touched better from their incredible session work to the many Toto hits and Grammys. Steve Porcaro has recently released a new solo album called The Very Day that shows him cleaning house. Most of these songs have been sitting around unfinished for decades so he finally committed to perfecting them (with help from friends like Michael McDonald and Jason Scheff) and getting them out in the world. Steve joins us this week to discuss the process of completing this album, as well as stories from his long session career. There's working with Quincy Jones and David Foster, there's working with Earth Wind and Fire and the Brothers Johnson, and there's his feelings on the many afterlives of "Human Nature" which he wrote and appeared on Thriller. Wrestling seems to be no different, as internet cinephiles are quick to scream "absolute cinema" at Roman Reigns staring at Jey Uso or Seth Rollins making a face. On this episode, Andrew and returning guest Paul Wedding will discuss some actual cinema, namely songs from movies. They could be songs made specifically for the movie's soundtrack, songs that are just in the movie and come from somewhere else, or film score. What if the songs that still feel new are actually twenty years old? We kick off with a nostalgia gut-punch as Carrie Underwood, Rascal Flatts, early Taylor Swift, and more hit the 20-year mark—then use that time warp to ask what truly lasts in music. From there, we swing into a high-energy news sweep: Zach Brown's album debuting at No.1 across all genres, Ella Langley's record-setting run on UK country airplay, leadership changes at the CMA, and a wave of new releases that balance story-first songwriting with cinematic promos. The heart of the show is a listener-fueled 80s showdown. Names fly—George Strait, Reba, Randy Travis, Journey, Queen, U2, Depeche Mode—and we unpack why Michael Jackson's studio innovation, Quincy Jones' production, and Toto's session muscle still shape how pop and rock are made. Along the way, we break down what makes today's country hooks stick, from Ella Langley's vocal scoops to Riley Green's easy swing, and count down the current charts with sharp, no-fluff commentary on what's climbing and why.We also open the hood on career arcs. Our “Where Are They Now?” segment revisits Gretchen Wilson, Easton Corbin, The Band Perry, and others to reveal how radio trends, label friction, burnout, and smart pivots steer longevity. The mailbag gets practical: labels act like banks and networks; independence is freedom plus workload; inputs beat vanity metrics. Measure what you control—releases, gigs, writing sessions—and let the audience decide what endures. Stick around to hear about our Podfest weekend, meet a few friends of the show, and grab a handful of behind-the-scenes gems that keep the community tight.Episode LinksVaughn Rhea: https://jayfranze.com/episode1/Garrett Landers: https://jayfranze.com/episode66/Avery Glenn Crabtree: https://jayfranze.com/episode77/Dalila Mya: https://jayfranze.com/episode102/Mark Badolato: https://jayfranze.com/episode140/Stephanie Rabus: https://jayfranze.com/episode149/Send us a text Support the showLinks Jay Franze: https://jayfranze.com/ JFS Country Countdown: https://jayfranze.com/countdown/ Contact Contact: https://jayfranze.com/contact/ Socials Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/jayfranze TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@jayfranze X: https://x.com/jayfranze YouTube: https://youtube.com/@jayfranze Services Services: https://jayfranze.com/services/ Books Books: https://jayfranze.com/books/ Merchandise Merchandise: https://jayfranze.com/merchandise/ Support Support: https://jayfranze.com/support/ Sponsor the Show: https://jayfranze.com/sponsor/

Don and Dude kick off a new year and a new series with the first “I Love the 80s” episode, zeroing in on 1980 as a hinge point between the shaggy experimentation of the 1970s and the sleeker, high-gloss sound that would define the decade. One host brings a Rock pick and the other counters with an R&B gem, sketching how guitars, grooves, and studio polish collided at the dawn of the 80s.The AlbumsGeorge Benson – Give Me the Night (1980) A sleek, radio-ready fusion of jazz, R&B, funk, and sophisticated pop that marks Benson's full crossover from respected jazz guitarist to smooth pop-soul star. Working with producer Quincy Jones and songwriter Rod Temperton, Benson wraps fluid guitar lines and intimate vocals around tight grooves, warm keys, and sparkling horns, creating a nocturnal soundtrack to city nightlife that helped shape early-80s quiet storm and smooth jazz.Iron Maiden – Iron Maiden (1980) A raw, fast, and street-level debut that helped launch the New Wave of British Heavy Metal, blending galloping bass lines, twin-guitar harmonies, and gritty, punk-leaning vocals. Recorded with minimal studio gloss, the album captures a young band playing loud and lean in smoke-filled pubs, turning dark urban tales, horror imagery, and medieval menace into a combustible new blueprint for 80s metal.Diggin' AlbumsGeese – Getting Killed (2025) A chaotic, inventive Brooklyn art-rock record produced by Kenny Beats, jumping from nervous, mathy rhythms to soulful swells and surreal lyrics, highlighting how adventurous guitar music still thrives in the streaming era.Prince – Dirty Mind (1980) A pivotal early statement from Prince that fuses stripped-down funk, new wave, and dance with provocatively frank lyrics, its raw, minimalist sound foreshadowing where 80s pop and R&B were headed.Donovan – what's a girl (2025) A long-shelved early-90s project finally released to celebrate Donovan's 60th anniversary, blending Gaelic romance, orchestral folk, grunge-leaning pop, and spoken poetry into a late-career “lost album” that reconnects him to his 60s roots.Cameron Crowe – The Uncool: A Memoir (2025) A long-awaited memoir tracing Crowe's teenage years as a rock journalist on the road with bands like Led Zeppelin, the Eagles, and David Bowie, revisiting the real-life stories that inspired Almost Famous while digging deeper into his family life and writing voice.Follow the show on Instagram, Facebook, Threads, and Bluesky @albumnerds, and support by subscribing, rating, reviewing, and sharing.“We are in a golden age of music. The project, inspired by the real-life story of Mike and Claire Sardinia—a Wisconsin couple who form a Neil Diamond tribute band is based on the documentary of the same name, which director Craig Brewer first encountered at a festival and later adapted for the screen. “I realized that everyone is living an extraordinary life,” Jackman shared to Chloe and Vogue's Deputy editory Taylor when reflecting on why he chose to take the role of Mike. After earning a Golden Globe nomination for her role as Claire, Kate speaks candidly about rediscovering her voice, crediting Sia (who she worked with on the film Music) with inspiring her to sing more freely. She recalls being pushed onto the microphone at her 16th birthday by her mother, Goldie Hawn, to perform “That's What Friends Are For,” with Quincy Jones in attendance. “He told me to get into the studio,” Hudson remembers.Plus, Hugh and Kate discuss what it's been like singing at bars across the world, what their tribute band would be (hint: Fleetwood Mac mentioned!), and answer a fun question from none other than Anna Wintour about whether or not they should adapt this film as a theater production. The Run-Through with Vogue is your go-to podcast where fashion meets culture. Today on another encore episode of the Rarified Heir Podcast, we are talking to Ed Eckstine, son of smooth as silk singer & bandleader Billy Eckstine. Our chat with Ed was funny, educational, occasionally jaw dropping and always engaging. Now, before we even started our chat with Ed, upon his agreeing to be a part of the podcast, we got a list of topics from Ed that he thought we might want to discuss. Effectively, he sent us a cheat sheet that they didn't get to on his appearance on the Questlove Supreme podcast prior to our chat. Who were we to say no? There were like 60 totally engaging topics Ed had written out and we get to some of them here. Jazz fans and pop fans will know Billy Eckstine for his deep baritone voice that singers of the era loved and the ladies swooned for. Sinatra was a fan and a friend. As was Ella and a host of others. Dapper, good looking, classy, entrepreneurial and courageous, we discuss with Ed all of those qualities his father had that made him a star. It also made him a target as you will hear, surrounding an article in Life Magazine that exposed America's racists past that frankly, doesn't seem too far removed from where we are today. We also talk to Ed about his own career as a journalist and music executive who recounts his obsessive love of rock music, his time working for the one and only Q, Quincy Jones and some of the most insane and jaw dropping interviews he conducted with the likes of Issac Hayes. We also get into his years as his father's helper before he went on stage at Jewish and Italian resorts in the 1960s and as Nabil Ayers said in a 2020 New York Times piece, what it "was like to be the first black person to be let in — to be allowed by the predominantly white music industry to helm one of its largest entities,"when he was the president of Mercury Records. This is the Rarified Heir Podcast and everyone has a story.

But this album, recorded live in Vegas, shows a 50-year-old Frank sounding loose, confident, and completely at home in front of a band that swings like nothing else. Listen with us as we break down and react to the best of this swingin' album.Start your free Open Studio trial for ALLLLL your jazz lesson needs: https://osjazz.link/yhi   00:00 - Intro Jam: Fly Me To the Moon01:35 - The Sinatra-Basie Episode!03:45 - Is This Peak Frank?05:45 - The Mid-60s Culture Shift07:45 - "Come Fly With Me" 12:00 - The Quincy Influence14:45 - "I've Got You Under My Skin"17:30 - What To Listen For22:30 - "The Shadow of Your Smile"26:20 - Freddie Green's "Chunking" Technique28:15 - Sinatra's Vocal Gift33:30 - "Street of Dreams"35:50 - "One For My Baby (And One More for the Road)"38:40 - "Fly Me To the Moon"45:00 - "One O'Clock Jump"49:50 - Desert Island Tracks54:05 - Apex Moments59:05 - Categories1:03:20 - Coming Up Next Week

This episode of The Other Side of the Bell, featuring legendary trumpeter and horn arranger Jerry Hey, is brought to you by Bob Reeves Brass. This episode also appears as a video episode on our YouTube channel, you can find it here: "Jerry Hey trumpet interview"   Find the expanded show notes, transcript and more photos here: https://bobreeves.com/blog/jerry-hey-trumpet-interview-the-other-side-of-the-bell-146   About Jerry Hey: Jerry Hey is one of the defining trumpet voices and horn arrangers in modern popular music. Born in Dixon, Illinois, into a deeply musical family, he honed his craft with Charlie Geyer and later at Indiana University under legendary pedagogue William Adam. After an early run co-founding the jazz-fusion band Seawind in Hawaii, Hey moved to Los Angeles in the mid-1970s and quickly became a first-call session player and arranger. From there, his sound is heard on a staggering number of iconic recordings. Hey's horn writing and trumpet playing helped shape Michael Jackson's Off the Wall and Thriller albums, and his long association with Quincy Jones produced landmark work for Earth, Wind & Fire, George Benson, Al Jarreau, Patti Austin, Barbra Streisand, Toto, and countless others. A six-time Grammy winner, he has been recognized repeatedly for his instrumental and vocal arrangements, as well as his contributions to major film and television scores, including Flashdance, The Color Purple, the Back to the Future trilogy, Forrest Gump, and Dreamgirls. Most recently, Hey has opened his personal archives in Notes From The Past 50 Years, a 250-page collection of pop excerpts spanning his studio career. The book gathers more than 200 of his favorite licks, along with personal stories and rare photos that trace his path from early days in Los Angeles to his most iconic sessions—including a few lesser-known musical gems. Equally at home leading a horn section, crafting a string chart, or delivering a lyrical flugelhorn solo, Hey remains a benchmark for precision, style, and imagination in the studio, with an influence that continues to shape how artists, arrangers, and producers think about horn sections today.   Episode Links: Website: www.heyhorns.com Instagram (@heyhorns) Jerry Hey playlist The Other Side of the Bell Episode #15 - William "Bill" Adam Tribute The Other Side of the Bell Episode #22 - Jerry Hey   Podcast Credits: "A Room with a View" - composed and performed by Howie Shear Podcast Host - John Snell Cover Photo Credit - Jerry Hey/Megan Noller Audio Engineer - Ted Cragg

Yet Lange was by some measures the biggest hitmaker—the producer of more top-selling albums than any of those better-known producers. The South African studio wiz crafted the arena-rock sound of AC/DC and Def Leppard. Then, Lange transformed the Cars, Billy Ocean, Bryan Adams, and Shania Twain into fist-pumping stadium-fillers, too. Movie Mike Deestro is revisiting 7 movie quotes that carry surprisingly deep truths about life, purpose, and perspective. He goes through each quote and the deep lessons he got from movies you wouldn’t expect from Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle to Pokémon: The First Movie! In the Movie Review, Mike talks about The Running Man starring Glen Powell. It’s the remake of the 1987 movie about a man who joins a game show in which contestants, allowed to go anywhere in the world, are pursued by "hunters" hired to kill them. Mike talks about the good and bad of Glen’s performance, why it doesn’t quite feel like an Edgar Wright movie, where it lost him but why he thinks Glen should be in the MCU and what superhero he should play. In the Trailer Park, after years of waiting, we finally got our first look at the Michael Jackson biopic "Michael." The King of Pop's nephew, Jaafar Jackson, plays the pop legend. Other cast members include Kendrick Sampson as Quincy Jones, Miles Teller as Jackson’s attorney, and Colman Domingo as his father Joe Jackson. Will this be the music biopic we’ve been waiting for and will it be the first music biopic to make $1 Billion Dollars at the box office? New Episodes Every Monday!
