The only way a radio listener or MTV watcher could avoid Basket Case, Longview, Welcome To Paradise, or When I Come Around in 1994 or 1995 was to be in a remote jungle or alone on the moon. The pop-punk explosion, led by the Bay-area trio Green Day and followed a few months later by The Offspring, would unseat grunge as the dominant underground scene making waves in the mainstream and open the door for a plethora of bands getting signed to major labels, like Rancid, NOFX, and Jawbreaker. When Maroon 5 came up with their smash hit “Moves Like Jagger,” they knew Jagger was a name that would resonate with listeners. And in 2011, Maroon 5 definitely knew what their fans wanted to hear. But it wasn't always that way. Have you ever heard of the ‘90s alt-rock band Kara's Flowers? If you haven't you're not alone. They were one of the more forgettable bands of their time. Kara's Flowers did catch the attention of Rob Cavallo, who you may remember as the guy who produced Green Day's American Idiot. He saw a lot of potential in Kara's Flowers and produced their second album, the power-pop-tinged The Fourth World. Upon its release in August 1997, the album only sold 5,000 copies. In 2001 Kara's Flowers resumed band activity, changing up their sound by trying a number of different styles, including country and folk, before settling on becoming what they deemed "a soul band, but with five white dudes.” They cut a demo for MCA Records, but the label rejected it. However, they did find an interested label in Octone Records, whose co-founder Ben Berkman had worked at Warner Music and knew of the band from their time with Reprise.  In a 2004 interview with Hit Quarters, Berkman said he loved what he heard in a song called “Sunday Morning” but couldn't believe it was the same band because they had such a completely different sound. It was clear to Berkman that the band was ready to take off. All they needed now was another guitarist and a brand new name. Eventually the band decided on the name Maroon 5. Why “5” and not, say, Maroon Moon? Well, the answer remains to be a secret between band members… and Billy Joel. Wait, Billy Joel? Now with a record deal and a brand new name, Maroon 5 were a whole new band. Their first single, “Harder To Breathe” was a slow-mover on the charts, but eventually earned the band some airplay. Once it caught on the band decided to re-release the album one year later, and at the beginning of 2004 they issued a second single, “This Love,” a song influenced by Stevie Wonder and written about Jane moving out after the breakup. As you may already know, “This Love” became a smash hit, followed by “She Will Be Loved” and “Sunday Morning.” You know them all. And just like that Maroon 5 were now a household name. Their second album "It Won't Be Soon Before Long" was an instant hit - thanks to lead single “Makes Me Wonder,” which became the band's first song to hit #1 on the Billboard Hot 100. It actually broke a record by jumping from #64 to #1 based purely on its first week of iTunes sales.  Maroon 5 wanted a different experience when it came to making album number three. Luckily they received a phone call from Mutt Lange, the famous South African producer, who asked if he could make their next record with them.  Mutt has quite the résumé. He got his start in the late ‘70s, by producing both AC/DC's Highway To Hell and Back In Black. From there he would produce classic records by Def Leppard, The Cars, Michael Bolton, and Canada's own Bryan Adams. Maroon 5 released their third album, Hands All Over, on September 2010. It would debut at #2 on Billboard's album chart and receive mixed reviews, but got some love from Rolling Stone, which called it “the band's brightest-sounding and poppiest yet.”  The upbeat, funky pop on singles like “Misery” and “Give A Little More” demonstrated a punchier sound. Although the album sold well enough and kept them on the road, something was missing.Up until this point, Maroon 5 had only ever written songs themselves. They had never worked with anyone outside of their circle. But they felt it was time to open the door to other songwriters and see what could happen.Luckily for Maroon 5, two up-and-coming producers were working on a song that would become not just the year's biggest hit, but the band's biggest hit ever.  This is the true story of Maroon 5's 'Moves' Like Jagger' ft. Christina Aguilera - with newly unearthed audio. featured Wiki of the Day

fWotD Episode 2484: Dookie Welcome to featured Wiki of the Day where we read the summary of the featured Wikipedia article every day.The featured article for Thursday, 22 February 2024 is Dookie.Dookie is the third studio album by the American rock band Green Day, released on February 1, 1994, by Reprise Records. The band's major label debut and first collaboration with producer Rob Cavallo, it was recorded in mid-1993 at Fantasy Studios in Berkeley, California. Written mostly by frontman and guitarist Billie Joe Armstrong, the album is heavily based around his personal experiences, with themes such as boredom, anxiety, relationships, and sexuality. The album was promoted with four singles: "Longview", "Basket Case", a re-recorded version of "Welcome to Paradise" (which originally appeared on the band's second studio album, 1991's Kerplunk), and "When I Come Around".After several years of grunge's dominance in popular music, Dookie brought a livelier, more melodic rock sound to the mainstream, and propelled Green Day to worldwide fame. Considered one of the defining albums of the 1990s and punk rock in general, it was also pivotal in solidifying the genre's mainstream popularity. Its influence permeated into the new millennium and beyond, being cited as an inspiration by many punk and pop-punk bands, as well as artists from other genres.Though the band was labeled a sell-out by some of their original fans for leaving their independent label, Lookout! Records and embracing a more polished sound, Dookie received critical acclaim upon its release. The record won a Grammy Award for Best Alternative Album in 1995. It was also a worldwide success, peaking at number two on the Billboard 200 in the United States and reaching top ten positions in several other countries. It was later certified Diamond by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), and has sold over 20 million copies worldwide, making it the band's best-selling album and one of the best-selling albums worldwide. It has been labeled by critics and journalists as one of the greatest albums of the 1990s and one of the greatest punk rock and pop-punk albums of all time; Rolling Stone placed Dookie on three iterations of their "500 Greatest Albums of All Time" list, and at number 1 on their "50 Greatest Pop-Punk Albums" list. In August 2023, it was announced that a 30th anniversary deluxe edition of the album would be released on September 29, 2023, featuring outtakes, demos, and two live concert recordings. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 00:01 UTC on Thursday, 22 February 2024.For the full current version of the article, see Dookie on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm Matthew Standard.

Green Day is a punk band from the East Bay in California. Billie Joe Armstrong, Mike Dirnt and Tré Cool have been playing music together since 1987. They've sold over 90 million records. They've won four Grammys, including twice for Best Rock Album. They put out their first album in 1990, and their second album, Kerplunk!, in 1991. And then, they moved to a major label and in 1994 they put out their third album, Dookie, which was huge. It helped bring punk into the mainstream. And this month is its 30th anniversary. So for this episode, I talked to Billie Joe Armstrong about the making of one of Green Day's biggest hits of all time: “Basket Case." Coming up, you'll also hear from Rob Cavallo, who produced the album. Plus, you'll hear two different demo versions of “Basket Case,” the first of which is basically a totally different song. Billie Joe Amstrong traces the history of “Basket Case,” from its origins as a cassette recording in a punk basement, all the way to becoming a song that helped define an era of music. In this exclusive interview reboot, Mark Baratto sits down with Rapper and Singer of the Dirty Heads, Jared Watson (aka Dirty J). This interview happened 30 minutes before the band went on stage for the beginning of their national tour, down here at the Key West Amphitheater. It may have been short, but for those fans out there, we touched on the bands origin story and their beginnings. More on the Dirty Heads Following in the footsteps of their California brothers Sublime, Huntington Beach's Dirty Heads mix hip-hop, reggae, and rock along with that laid-back South Cali attitude. The group formed in 2003 when punk rocker Dustin Bushnell (aka Duddy B) asked his friend, rapper Jared Watson (aka Dirty J), to collaborate on a project that would focus on positive vibes and infectious grooves. Watson added singing to his vocal skills, and with percussionist Jon Olazabal, an acoustic trio version of Dirty Heads began playing shows and building an audience.  They soon hooked up with producer Rob Cavallo and headed into the studio to record their debut album for Warner Bros., but differences with the label had them looking for other opportunities. Still, the band was able to retain most of its work, including sessions with drummer Josh Freese, along with the late-Beatles collaborator Billy Preston in one of the keyboardist's last recordings. The finished album, Any Port in a Storm, would arrive in 2008, with a deluxe edition following in 2010. The deluxe version featured the track “Lay Me Down” with special guest Rome Ramirez of Sublime with Rome. The song would top Billboard's Alternative Songs chart just before the summer of 2010.  They followed up two years later with Cabin by the Sea and later recorded an acoustic version of the title track. This, in turn, led to an entire acoustic album in 2013 called Home: Phantoms of Summer. Dirty Heads' next album, Sound of Change, would prove to be a breakthrough for the now-veteran band, debuting at number eight on the Billboard Top 200 while topping the Independent and Alternative Albums charts upon its May 2014 release.  Building on their renewed success, Dirty Heads enlisted a bevy of industry hitmakers to work on their self-titled 2016 follow-up, which — thanks to its mainstream appeal — again charted high on the Billboard Top 200. The following year saw the band drop its sixth studio album, Swim Team, featuring the singles “Vacation” and “Staloney.” Also included on the album was the track “So Glad You Made It,” featuring 311's Nick Hexum. The single “Listen to Me” arrived in early 2019 and was later included on Dirty Heads' Dave Cobb-produced seventh album Super Moon. ~ David Jeffries, Rovi Website: https://www.dirtyheads.com Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/dirtyheads Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/DirtyHeads Twitter: https://twitter.com/dirtyheads YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/user/DirtyHeads Spotify: https://play.spotify.com/artist/6GkJh85o22LfD2vgL9DP6f?play=true&utm_source=open.spotify.com&utm_medium=open Apple iTunes: https://itunes.apple.com/us/artist/dirty-heads/id287941061

In this exclusive interview, Mark Baratto sits down with Rapper and Singer of the Dirty Heads, Jared Watson (aka Dirty J). This interview happened 30 minutes before the band went on stage for the beginning of their national tour, down here at the Key West Amphitheater. It may have been short, but for those fans out there, we touched on the bands origin story and their beginnings. This episode is brought to you by the Backyards of Key West Gallery Looking for local Key West art?  We've got you covered! ~ David Jeffries, Rovi Website: https://www.dirtyheads.com Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/dirtyheads Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/DirtyHeads Twitter: https://twitter.com/dirtyheads YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/user/DirtyHeads Spotify: https://play.spotify.com/artist/6GkJh85o22LfD2vgL9DP6f?play=true&utm_source=open.spotify.com&utm_medium=open Apple iTunes: https://itunes.apple.com/us/artist/dirty-heads/id287941061 Google Play: https://play.google.com/music/preview/As2zqtl4npvdfmp3q2a7pwkyh3a?u=0#

In this episode, I discuss the album "Dookie" by Green Day. We go over the entire history of the album, including the making and production of the record. I also give my thoughts on all of the songs, as well as some fun memories with the record. Green Day is an American rock band formed in the East Bay of California in 1987 by lead vocalist and guitarist Billie Joe Armstrong and bassist and backing vocalist Mike Dirnt. For much of the band's career, they have been a trio with drummer Tré Cool, who replaced John Kiffmeyer in 1990 before the recording of the band's second studio album, Kerplunk. Dookie is the third studio album and the major label debut by American rock band Green Day, released on February 1, 1994 by Reprise Records. The band's first collaboration with producer Rob Cavallo, it was recorded in late 1993 at Fantasy Studios in Berkeley, California. Written mostly by front man Billie Joe Armstrong, the album is heavily based around his personal experiences, with themes such as boredom, anxiety, relationships, and sexuality. The album was promoted with five singles: "Longview", "Basket Case", a re-recorded version of "Welcome to Paradise" (originally on their Kerplunk album), "When I Come Around", and the radio-only "She". "All by Myself" is a hidden track performed by drummer Tré Cool. LET'S CONNECT: Kyle's Instagram Kyle's Facebook Email: Kyledevlinfitness@gmail.com

[JOHN'S PICK] The 2000s was a very strange time for anyone that was growing up in it. You were old enough to remember the US economy being in pretty good shape during the 90s with relative peace on the home front, directly followed by the events of 9/11 and a completely new era, full of unending war, vengeful patriotism, increasing distrust of our neighbors, and what seemed at the time to be the worst possible president, George W Bush. Times were-a-changing fast; the Bush Administration had recently waged a war with Iraq using bogus intel unrelated to the 9/11 attacks and some people were waking up from the patriotic shock that the attacks had put them in and started to realize that this "war on terror" was a lot more complicated than they had been told... Green day was already in a strange place when 9/11 happened. Their previous album "Warning" (2000) was a commercial flop, and their master tapes for the next nearly-finished record were stolen from the studio in November 2002, which was going to be called "Cigarettes and Valentines" and musically went back to their roots. Instead of rerecording the album a second time, they took the advice of their long time producer, Rob Cavallo, and started again from scratch. This time, they got into a much more collaborative headspace and took in what was happening in the world around them, which was falling apart more and more day by day. Whether it intended to or not, "American Idiot" became the musical icon for the Bush years. With their politically charged music videos and tours, Green Day went from garage punk to stadium rock punk and became the voice of many peoples' frustrations with the government... Join Brad, Jon A, John G, and Scott as we reminisce about what it was like to grow up in the US during 9/11... As an introvert, I loathe shallow conversations. I prefer silence over "chatting" any day. However, I love deep conversations. When I teach yoga, as much as I try to learn the names of the students who attend my classes regularly, sometimes its challenging to learn much more than that. A few weeks ago a student of mine asked me if I taught yoga for a living. I told him that it is hard to make a living teaching yoga, and that I teach yoga and doing eating disorder recovery coaching. Combined - that is my living.
