Was it 25 or 30 years ago when Whatcom County and counties across the U.S. still had a strong network of prevention and recovery programs?Back then, a small army of outreach workers, counselors, and interventionists worked daily to keep people out of jail and on the path to healing. There were treatment centers, youth programs, crisis shelters, and community services that not only supported individuals but created an entire culture of care. That infrastructure is gone. The jobs in the helping culture have been replaced by our current after arrest culture compared to the small army of helpers that existed in the 70s, 80s, and into the mid 90s it began to change. The centers closed, and the safety nets disappeared. What remains is a justice system designed around punishment. Today, when someone stumbles whether from addiction, poverty, or a bad decisionthey face stacked charges, impossible bail, and lifelong consequences. Instead of treatment, they get trauma. Instead of recovery, they get a record. We've witnessed the results: generations of families torn apart, homelessness exploding, and taxpayers funding more jails instead of more solutions. The loss is not just in dollars, but in human potential. That's why the iChange Justice Podcast, hosted by Joy Gilfilen, keeps asking the hard questions: “What is justice, anyway?” She is joined often by Irene Morgan, founder of the Restorative Community Coalition, who has spent decades advocating for community-based solutions, and by one of our producers, Ava Sakowski, who helps bring these stories to life. Together, they shine a light on what has been lost and what can be rebuilt. We know justice can mean something different—restoration, healing, and giving people the tools to grow. The proof is there. With just $1,500, one pilot program helped a woman pay rent, repair her car, and get back on her feet. That small investment changed her trajectory completely. The truth is, communities thrive when we invest in people, not prisons. What we need is not more punishment, but a revival of prevention, treatment, and human-centered care.

A Montezuma County grand jury indicted thirty-eight-year-old Rachel Leonard for the 2022 death of her five-year-old daughter Annika, alleging she suffocated the child after a custody dispute, though her defense is challenging the evidence ahead of an October plea hearing. I spoke with Dr. Jess Calarco about her recent book, Holding It Together: How Women Became America's Safety Net. In the first half, which posted in the previous episode, Dr. Calarco shared how there are many labor-intensive tasks that are required for society to run in its current form and structure. But rather than ensure that those necessary tasks are done and paid for by the society that demands them, we dump them onto women, in the process limiting their ability to fully participate in society. In this episode, we continued to speak about why that is a problem, the ways that it manifests as such, and how we might build something better for everyone. In Today's Episode, We Discuss:Taking the leap without a financial safety netBuilding a niche around feeding, autism, and sensory needsFinding unexpected community support and collaborationAnd how her 13-year-old son literally helped her run the numbers to get startedErin's story shows that you don't have to hate your job to know it's time for a change. The parts of yourself you're hiding are the exact keys to unlocking your next level of freedom, impact, and peace. Corinne Morahan opens up about the places we keep ourselves small, not on stages or in meetings, but in the quiet ways we hide who we really are. She shares her personal experience confronting the discomfort of being truly seen, from the frustration of having her time controlled to the anger that surfaces when her creative flow is interrupted. Through a vulnerable “seen session” with her mentor, Corinne reveals how unspoken emotions signal deeper misalignment and how acknowledging them can lead to powerful self-awareness. This episode dives into the journey of redefining safety, not as an external condition but as an inner state we create for ourselves. Corinne reflects on how years of curating a peaceful, organized environment were just the beginning, and how the real work is learning to be the safety she once sought outside of herself. She invites listeners to examine the secrets and fears that are quietly shaping their lives, offering a bold reminder that the freedom we crave is waiting behind the parts of ourselves we're most afraid to show. On July 4, President Trump signed a sweeping new law that makes major changes to the social safety net—with serious consequences for families and children. Child and family policy expert Professor Taryn Morrissey breaks down the Republican-backed legislation, which slashes Medicaid, SNAP, and other key supports that millions of families rely on. She examines how the law shifts resources away from low-income and younger Americans—especially children—and toward wealthier, older households. Morrissey discusses how these changes could make inequality worse and what it would actually mean to put kids at the center of national policy. On this follow-up segment of Go Gaddis Real Estate Radio, Cleve Gaddis continues his enlightening conversation with Expert Advisor Michael Crew, CEO of Homeowner Management Services, Inc., diving even deeper into the world of HOA reserves and how they impact today's homebuyers and sellers. With HOA-related costs becoming more of a concern for buyers, many are asking: “How do I know I won't get hit with a surprise special assessment after I move in?” In this episode, Cleve and Michael explore how a properly managed reserve fund—and a recent industry shift—can offer a true safety net for buyers. They discuss: Why today's buyers are demanding transparency about HOA reserves before making an offer. The growing popularity of reserve studies and how they're becoming a key factor in real estate negotiations. What questions smart buyers should ask about an HOA's financial health—and how sellers can proactively prepare. The reality behind “surprise” costs in communities and how to avoid them altogether. Cleve also briefly touches on the 2025 Georgia State Legislative session—where, surprisingly, no major laws or changes affecting HOAs were passed. But don't get too comfortable; there's always the possibility of new proposals next year. Whether you're buying into an HOA community, serving on your neighborhood board, or simply want to avoid being blindsided by future repair bills, this segment provides insight, strategy, and clarity. In this episode of Retire with Style, Alex Murguia and Wade Pfau explore Treasury Inflation-Protected Securities (TIPS) and their role in retirement planning. They cover the history of TIPS, their tax implications, and how they help protect against inflation. The conversation also addresses the drawbacks of TIPS, current market conditions, and the importance of clear communication- especially for couples where one partner is less engaged in financial matters. Takeaways TIPS were introduced in 1997 to protect against inflation. TIPS provide a real rate of return that adjusts with inflation. Tax implications of TIPS make them less efficient than other investments. It's important to consider the inflation protection TIPS offer in retirement planning. Market timing is not a sound strategy for investing in TIPS. Communicating financial plans should focus on meaning rather than just numbers. Let's talk about the most essential job that no one wants to call a job: the work done inside the home. Parenting. Caregiving. Running a household. It's all real work — valuable, skilled, and foundational. And yet, it's often dismissed, devalued, and definitely unpaid. This week, we're going all in on the fight to change that narrative. Nicole is joined by historian and professor Emily Callaci, whose latest book Wages for Housework: The Feminist Fight Against Unpaid Labor uncovers the radical movement that dared to ask: what if we paid people for domestic labor? What if the backbone of our economy — caregiving and home-making — was finally treated like the work it actually is? We unpack the historical, political, and economic forces that keep unpaid labor invisible, and what it means to truly value the labor that happens in homes across the world. This episode is fiery, informed, and long overdue. Because here's the truth: without unpaid labor, nothing else works. Today, we discuss poverty, the social detriments of health, and safety net programs in the U.S. with Robert Greenstein, founder and former president of the D.C.-based think tank Center on Budget and Policy Priorities (CBPP). Bob is one of America's leading experts on federal budget, tax policy and safety net programs. Odds are that you or someone you know got more services from the government—health insurance, financial help, food assistance—because of Bob's life work. Over the past 40 years, he has worked tirelessly to address poverty in U.S. and help make healthcare accessible to all. Bob and CBPP played a major role in expanding our nation's nutritional programs like SNAP (a.k.a. food stamps) and WIC (Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children. He and the CBPP helped expand the earned income tax credit (EITC) for low- and moderate-income families. And he and the organization helped get Obamacare passed and continue to defend it and Social Security from all comers. ◘ Transcript bit.ly/3JoA2mz ◘ This podcast features the song “Follow Your Dreams” (freemusicarchive.org/music/Scott_Ho…ur_Dreams_1918) by Scott Holmes, available under a Creative Commons Attribution-Noncommercial (01https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc/4.0/) license. ◘ Disclaimer: The content and information shared in GW Integrative Medicine is for educational purposes only and should not be taken as medical advice.
