Everyone knows it is dangerous to talk on the phone while driving – but it seems like it shouldn't be. After all you talk to people in the car while you drive and that seems to be okay. This episode explains the reasons why driving and talking on the phone don't mix – at all. https://www.kansashealthsystem.com/care/centers/trauma-center/resources/distracted-driving Do you know what visual intelligence is? It is how you look at all you see. What do you notice? What don't you notice? It is how you look at the world. You can sharpen your visual intelligence if you know how and there are some real benefits to doing so. Here to explain it is Amy Herman, who has provided training to the FBI, Navy SEALs, NATO, the Peace Corps, Georgetown University Hospital, and executives at Microsoft and Google. She is author of the bestselling book Visual Intelligence (https://amzn.to/49LRD1U) There is also a new adaptation of that book for children called smART: Use Your Eyes to Boost Your Brain (https://amzn.to/49IX9T5) Pain is something we are all intimately familiar with. Consequently, it is important to understand how pain works, what it is telling you and how to control it. That is precisely what Dr. Aneesh Singla is here to discuss. He is a physician who specializes in treating pain and a leading expert on the topic of pain. Aneesh serves on the physician faculty at Harvard Medical School, and he is author of the book, Why It Hurts: A Physician's Insights on The Purpose of Pain (https://amzn.to/3W26jHc). A Sunday sermon by Pastor Brett Deal. I don't think it would be shocking to anyone if I said we live in an age of distraction. Some distractions fly at us, outside of our control, leaving us harried and bewildered. Others we invite in and give special places of honor in our lives. These diversions can serve us like pressure valve releases, allowing built up stress and strain to burn away. Surely some distractions are valid, important even. We all need a break when the weight of the world feels like it's crashing down on us: a call from a loved one, a movie with friends, an afternoon nap. Some distractions, however, spread and expand and seemingly take over our lives! What once was a passing fancy can leave us sidelined in our own lives. For example, Amy Herman once observed, “Portable technology is not just a sensory distraction; we allow it to be a sensory substitute.”  Technology and innovation can be such a blessing! Through it, we see the faces of family thousands of miles away and warm ourselves in the cold of winter. But innovation and technology can just as easily distract us from what we truly need to see. Two thousand years ago in Jerusalem, the city of David, the capital of God's people Israel, should have been the epicenter of ecstatic rejoicing when the strange wisemen from the East showed up proclaiming the birth of the Messiah (Matthew 2.1-12). Instead, we find the governmental and spiritual authorities distracted, as if the promised Messiah was an unwanted intrusion! Herod and the religious leaders were so distracted by their self-serving supremacy and ancient scrolls they missed God's invitation—through a most unlikely source, strange foreign prophets from Persia—to worship the Christ! Because of their unbridled distractions of self-preservation and maintaining power, they missed seeing the Savior of the world a short three-hour walk away! There are times to take full advantage of healthy diversions, pouring energy into hobbies and recreation. But, dear friend, it is important that we not miss the Evangelist directing us to “behold” what is taking place right in from of us, distracted by the glow of a cellphone or the anxieties of this life. Beloved, as we come together to celebrate the Feast of Epiphany this weekend, let's not miss the prophetic voice from unlikely places, and worship Jesus the Christ, our Messiah King!

Amy Herman joins Tim to talk about a one-of-a-kind career she made for herself, all centered on using art to help people see the world differently and better in order to do their jobs better.  Amy is the author of the books, “Visual Intelligence” and “Fixed: How to Perfect the Fine Art of Problem Solving.” In short, Amy helps people find information and solutions that are hiding in plain sight. This episode originally was released February 7, 2022. https://traffic.libsyn.com/forcedn/shapingopinion/Encore_-_Hiding_in_Plain_Sight.mp3 Amy Herman teaches visual intelligence. She gives lectures, she gives TED talks, she gives tours of art museums, she participates in podcasts like this one. And the common theme is that she helps others see things they may be missing. She helps them develop a skillset or an ability to see details or context that's right in front of them, but in the normal course of affairs, they just may not see. Some of her students are police detectives, federal agents, doctors, and many others. Amy works to help them improve their visual intelligence. Imagine what it would be like to be given a short period of time to investigate a crime scene – a murder scene. It's your job to look for patterns, to look for exceptions, to look for details and clues that might tell you when this was done, what the motive might have been, and perhaps who may have done it. How can you step back and look at the scene with a fresh eye. An unbiased eye. One that picks up things you might not have noticed before? That's one of the first questions we asked Amy. By showing people how to look closely at painting, sculpture, and photography, she helps them hone their visual intelligence to recognize the most pertinent and useful information as well as recognize biases that impede decision making. She developed her Art of Perception seminar in 2000 to improve medical students' observation and communication skills with their patients when she was the Head of Education at The Frick Collection in New York City. She subsequently adapted the program for a wide range of professionals and leads sessions internationally for the New York City Police Department, the FBI, the French National Police, the Department of Defense, Interpol, the State Department, Fortune 500 companies, first responders, the military, and the intelligence community. In her highly participatory presentation, she demonstrates the relevance of visual literacy across the professional spectrum and how the analysis of works of art affords participants in her program an innovative way to refresh their sense of critical inquiry and reconsider the skills necessary for improved performance and effective leadership. The program has been featured in The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, The CBS Evening News, and Smithsonian Magazine, among others. Her TED talk, A Lesson in Looking, went live in December 2018. Ms. Herman holds an A.B., a J.D., and an M.A. in art history. This method proves that everyone sees and interprets things differently, which shows that we need to become better communicators to solve our problems. She stressed that effective communication has a renewed significance now because we are communicating with our stakeholders in a virtual environment. For leaders of organizations, the most difficult thing for them to do is rethink their communication skills and make them as effective as they were before, which involves agility. Amy also spoke about confirmation bias – wherein people only hear what they want to hear – and how to realize that we are trapped in this way of looking at information. Building on the conversation, Amy spoke about well-known artists who reflect characteristics that a great leader can impersonate. Amy E. Art is a universal language and it can be used to expose deep-seated truths about ourselves that might otherwise be hidden by our own ego. In Episode 8 of Looking Outside we explore the power held by words with wordsmith, curious human and Senior Insights Leader at Mars Inc, Jessica Southard. Jess and Jo explore how words can be magical, can empower and motivate, but also how they can be destructive and divisive. To do that, Jess shares her personal experience of communication in her Army intelligence days leading soldiers, the transition to the complex world of business, and how she treats words with responsibility raising her three children. As well as a little bit of the science, and what happens to the human brain when we read, see, or hear messages. Jo and Jess also discuss the importance of critical thinking in a world lacking empathy and not lacking conflict. A world where we seek comfortable predictability (and fluency), and the impact artfully and carefully used words, messages and communication can have for positive change.  -- To look beyond the familiar, Jess reads a lot, usually three books at a time. With books she leverages human psychology, behavioral science and history to make sense of the world. Jess also works at diversifying her perspective via what she is exposed to. For example her news feed includes broad global sources (Washington Post, New York Times, Fox, CNN, Al Jazeera, local Australian news, BBC). Art and problem solving, I can't imagine what one has to do with the other. I never thought that looking at art could help solve a problem. That is, until I had a conversation with Amy Herman, a recovering attorney, author, and art historian, amongst other things. Remember when ‘Where's Waldo' was a thing? Or looking for where caricaturist Al Hirschfield hid the name of his daughter, Nina in his drawings?  We were looking to solve a problem in a way. Maybe we were waging a bet to see who could find Waldo and Nina. There were times when I knew I couldn't find either. But what if we took a step back and instead of knowing what we were looking for, we needed to find figure out what we didn't see?

What can a painting of a shipwreck from the early 1800s tell us about our society today?   This week's guest, Amy Herman, believes art holds within it important lessons about life, greed, politics, and humanity that carry through from centuries past.   Amy is the founder of The Art of Perception, an innovative program that uses works of art to revitalize our creative thinking. She's written a new book, FIXED: How to Perfect the Fine Art of Problem Solving, where she shares her methodology of using art to refresh critical thinking skills to help resolve problems, difficulties, and challenges.   Using art as a neutral ground, if we can dig into our discomfort and better articulate our views, we can turn conversation stoppers into invitations to more — more dialogue, more understanding ... of ourselves and of each other.   View The Raft of the Medusa oil painting: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Raft_of_the_Medusa   Connect with Amy's work at https://artfulperception.com and at https://twitter.com/AmyHermanAOP.

Greetings! If this feels like a pretty ambitiously named episode, well, that's because this is where we are in fall 2020. We are on the bleeding edge of crisis parenting, and there is a feeling in the air of "this is where our society fails or succeeds." (At least that's how it feels to me! You are very welcome to disagree. Either way, I hope this episode gives you a roadmap to success on your parenting journey, and some hope.) Whether a society succeeds or fails is in large part dependent upon the how that society raises its children. In this episode I offer five ways to think about this idea: 1. A society will fail by operating from a place of fear… A society will succeed by operating from a place of love. 2. A society will fail by rejecting change and diversity… A society will succeed by accepting both of these key qualities and using them to move forward together. 3. A society will fail by looking past – ignoring – that which is right in front of it, but which is difficult to look at… A society will succeed by understanding what is right in front of it, the matter how difficult or upsetting that information is. 4. A society will fail by stunting and mis-shaping children's development… A society will succeed by embracing children, wherever they are in their development, and by playing to their children's strengths. 5. A society will fail by putting up barriers and excluding those who don't share similar beliefs… A society will succeed by choosing to connect on a human level, with compassion and empathy, regardless of beliefs. Thank you for listening! I hope you find this one helpful! (View this post on my website by going to weturnedoutokay.com/347-part-1) Announcements and Links… 1. Katy and Amy take a walk through the streets of Manhattan, discussing how better to observe the world around them, and by doing so, make better decisions. Decisions that could save a life, or simply make their day better. They discuss the way our attention has been taken over by our phones, which leads not only to rudeness, but also to missing important things that are happening around us. And Katy asks: How have we collectively decided that what's happening in the world isn't interesting? She also wonders: When you work so hard to heighten your visual senses, do the other senses get heightened too or does the visual sense take over the rest? Amy details how, in a world where we're constantly bombarded with information, we can learn to distill out the information we need and want instead of trying to take it all in, or worse, missing it. The Daily Helping

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 18, 2019 32:16

Today our expert guest is Amy Herman, a lawyer and art historian who uses works of art to symmetrically sharpen observation, analysis, and communication skills. By showing people how to look closely at painting, sculpture, and photography, she helps them hone their visual intelligence to help them recognize the most pertinent and useful information, as well as biases that impede decision making.   She originally developed her Art of Perception seminar in 2000 to improve medical student's observation and communication skills with their patients, but she has since adapted the program to train a wide variety of individuals, including: the FBI, NYPD, Department of Homeland Security, Navy SEALs, Peace Corps, Georgetown University Hospital, MetLife, Johnson & Johnson, Planned Parenthood, Seventh Day Adventist Church, and New York City doormen.   How do we see what matters?   Amy's catchphrase is, “How do we see what matters?”   In a world where we are barraged with information, where we have a non-stop, 24-hour stream of digital information available at your fingertips, how do we separate what's important from what's just noise? We see so much and our brain can't take all of that in, so how do we distill the information that we need to live our lives with purpose and do our jobs as effectively as we can?   Amy suggests that it's through the development of visual intelligence, which “means not only looking up from your screens and engaging the world around you, but filtering out a lot of that noise and a lot of that information to see what matters.”   Art just happens to be the vehicle that Amy chooses to teach this because it's a novel set of data for the people that she works with. If you're used to running a successful business, for example, looking at works of art gives your left brain a rest, engages your right brain, and forces you to think about communicating what you see. Then, when you go back to work, you have a different template or lens through which to see business operations and communicate what you see to others.   Communication is actually a significant part of this program. “Communication is a two-way street,” Amy says. “It's not just how you say it. You have to be mindful of who's listening to you and how your message is being heard. Because if it's not being heard, your message doesn't matter.”   The Biggest Helping: Today's Most Important Takeaway   “This a rule in my house and I share it with people because it's a small thing and we can all do it: look up from your screens for 15 minutes a day. If my 16 year old can do it, I promise you can do it... Do anything. Go talk to a colleague. Go talk to your husband. Go talk to your wife. Have a glass of wine. Read a book. Make dinner. Take a walk.   “And it's not a punishment... But I believe that when we look up from our screens for 15 minutes a day, we think differently, we communicate differently, and we prioritize our lives differently.”   --   Thank you for joining us on The Daily Helping with Dr. Shuster. Michael Covel has an “out of the box” interview today with Amy Herman. In 2000 Amy started a program called, The Art of Perception at The Frick Collection in New York City. She helps her students figure out how to fix big picture problems by looking at the small details. Her new book is “Visual Intelligence: Sharpen Your Perception, Change Your Life.” Amy starts the podcast off sharing a story referred to by Michael as “the soap story.” It is about a man from Uganda who was moved by how wasteful the hotel industry is. His big picture movement started with a bar of soap. The staff at a hotel he had been staying at cleaned his room and replaced a bar of soap that he had only used a few times. He contacted the front desk of the hotel and asked why his soap had been replaced when it had not fully been used up. The front desk explained that they replace all the soaps everyday regardless of how much had been used. What came of this small encounter? This man from Uganda jumpstarted a movement that changed the way the hotel industry operates by being more mindful of the how much needless waste they are creating. It was a small detail that changed a big picture problem. Next, Amy shares an “aha” moment she had in college about art. She went from practicing law to studying museum education which led to her founding The Art of Perception at The Frick Collection in New York City. The program began with teaching medical students about art and how to translate it into their own profession. She started the program in 2000 and in 2004 she was having dinner with some friends which sparked the idea of expanding the program to the police field. It was wildly accepted and in no time, the program was expanded to just about every other professional field. Amy goes into some examples of her students that took her class and that have shared real life examples with her. Her students have been able to apply her teachings to everything from helping diagnose patients to solving crimes. It is all about the small details in the big picture. Amy says her program has been so successful for two reasons; art is powerful and art is not threatening. She requests that her students do not take notes, and there are no cell phones allowed during class. All that is needed is your eyes, brain, and your ability to communicate. She doesn’t want to teach people how to see art, but rather teaches what she refers to as the five “A’s”: Assess, analyze, articulate information, adapt your behavior, and become accountable for your decisions. Amy talks about listening to your sixth sense but also being able to articulate what you are feeling so you can act on it. She stresses that precise and consistent communication is paramount and gives some real life examples of why it is so important and what could happen when that ground work is not laid down. In this episode of Trend Following Radio: Undoing perceptions COBRA methodology Listening to your sixth sense Situational awareness See something say something Pertinent Negative Critical inquiry

Amy Herman joins us to talk about those topics and more. Amy is the author of the recently released book Visual Intelligence: Sharpen Your Perception, Change Your Life. She is a lawyer and art historian who uses great works of art to systematically sharpen observation, analysis, and observation skills. What if success was less about mastery and more about sight?Simple truth: Most of us don’t see what is right in front of us.Instead, we see mental models and imprints of what things “should” look like or what we’ve been told to see. And, we miss what's actually happening, along with all the critical details. As entrepreneurs or professionals, it’s extremely difficult to become extraordinary at anything, to serve on the deepest level or build businesses, careers and lives that are tapped into their potential until we first understand how to see what’s in front of us.Today’s guest, Amy Herman, can help. A former lawyer with a dual education in art, she saw how a pervasive inability to both see truth and details and then share them in a clear way was limiting the work of so many people. So, she developed The Art of Perception, a program to teach (non-artist) professionals strengthen their perception skills using classic works of art in a museum setting. The impact has been astonishing. She now works with everyone from the NYPD FBI to the Department of Defense, doctors and med students, as well as leaders in the fields of education, finance, and policy. Amy’s new book, Visual Intelligence, describes her process and her work. In This Episode You’ll Learn:The impetus behind the launch of Amy’s programs. The experience of The Art of Perception and what people can expect when they go through the program. The four As of Amy’s program and how they help professionals become better at their jobs. The importance of taking a step back and making sure you have enough information if you choose to rely on a bias. Why eyewitness testimonies are not a reliable source of information.Amy’s tip for getting the complete picture of a situation at hand. Why Amy prohibits certain words in her classes. The importance of self-perception and why it’s critical to self-development.Why Amy is unhappy with the state of the formal art education and what she suggests to those majoring in art.Mentioned In This Episode:Connect with Amy: The Art of PerceptionVisual Intelligence by Amy HermanThe Gift of Fear by Gavin de BeckerThe METMuseum of Fine Arts, BostonThe Frick Collection
