Stryker, a global leader in medical technologies, has announced the launch of its Training Centre of Excellence, a new initiative that will help upskill employees, enhance leadership capabilities and foster manufacturing excellence at the company's facility in Tullagreen, Co. Cork. The three-year training initiative, developed with the support of IDA Ireland, will equip employees at Stryker's Tullagreen facility with the agility and skills for the future of work, promote innovative thinking, embed a culture of continuous improvement, and advance sustainability. This comes as the World Economic Forum estimates that six in 10 workers globally will require training before 2027 due to the changing nature of work and pace of technological change. Stryker's new Training Centre of Excellence in Tullagreen will feature a workforce transformation programme focused on upskilling and reskilling employees in every function of the business. This includes a focus on lean management and continuous improvement. Leaders at the facility will be provided with bespoke training to further enhance their agility and ability to develop high-performing teams. In addition, digital and automation engineers will train employees across the site on advanced technologies such as AI and how they can be harnessed to advance innovation and product development. The Training Centre of Excellence will also allow employees to pursue a range of courses and bespoke courses in Environmental Sustainability Awareness. The training programme will promote awareness and drive sustainability initiatives for Tullagreen. Speaking on the launch, Ian Corkey, Site Lead at Tullagreen Stryker in Ireland, said: "The launch of Stryker's Training Centre of Excellence in Tullagreen represents a significant step in our journey toward operational excellence and propelling innovation forward. By investing in our people and their skills, we can ensure that they thrive in a rapidly changing world and foster a culture of creativity and continuous improvement. "This new initiative will help future-proof our investment in our Tullagreen facility and strengthen our team's ability to develop cutting-edge products that help improve patient and healthcare outcomes long into the future. The Tullagreen Training Centre of Excellence will also serve as a lighthouse for other Stryker sites across Ireland. We are grateful to IDA Ireland for their invaluable support in bringing this initiative to life." Rachel Shelly, Global Head of Life Sciences at IDA Ireland added: "IDA Ireland welcomes the launch of Stryker's Training Centre of Excellence and is delighted to be partnering with Stryker on this important investment in its workforce. Stryker's mission is to make healthcare better. This is driven by the company's focus on innovation and performance, delivered through its world class team here in Ireland. The centre exemplifies the company's commitment to talent as an enabler for excellence in healthcare technology; and reinforces Ireland's role as a key partner for global MedTech companies. The launch of Stryker's Tullagreen Training Centre of Excellence builds on the company's annual apprenticeship programme as it reinforces its leadership in advanced manufacturing. Stryker first established a presence in Tullagreen in 1998 with an initial team of 20 employees. Over the past 26 years, the facility has expanded and evolved with employees now focused on manufacturing medical implants for joint replacement, spine and trauma and extremities which are positively impacting patients across the world.

Mentoring can look like many different things.  Sometimes you're pouring into a single relationship with a child.  Sometimes it's multiple kids at the same time in a group setting.  Sometimes you're not even mentoring a child; you're mentoring an adult.  At the end of the day, the demographic of your mentee is irrelevant, because mentoring isn't about WHO your mentee is.  It's about the relationship you're building with them, through the ups and the downs, the best and worst, the mistakes, the lessons, and the wins.  Mentoring is something that takes intentionality, and every mentor has a reason why they do that.  Joel McMillan is the K-6 Site Lead at Forerunner Mentoring, and joins Josh on his summer takeover to talk through his own mentoring journey, including some pretty crazy encounters with God, having a sense of his calling even before becoming a Christian, working with adults battling addiction, and mentoring kids from hard places in the name of Jesus at Forerunner Mentoring. Purchase the You Can Mentor book:You Can Mentor: How to Impact Your Community, Fulfill the Great Commission, and Break Generational Cursesyoucanmentor.com

[48:42] It's the design that you're looking at as the problem, not the person. [56:27] Do we think that people sold a bunch of stuff and now we were left with the results? [1:00:46] Recommendations on readings, things to do to better hone our craft. [1:03:35] The more you explore, the more you realize, what's going on? Where can I learn from? How to Create an Empowering Work Environment with Scott Carleton

What does it look like to create a work environment where employees can succeed and thrive? Are there steps you can take as a leader to encourage and support your team members in a meaningful way? Here to help us understand what makes Asana a, “Top 5 Best Place to Work” is my guest, Scott Carleton. Scott is currently the Site Lead of Asana’s NYC office, dedicated to enabling all teams to collaborate effortlessly. Previously, Scott was the VP of Technology at Andela, empowering engineering talent across Africa. Scott co-founded Artsicle as CTO, building a global community of visual artists now featuring over 6000 creators in 100 countries. His work on Artsicle's discovery engine, which was able to create a personalized experience for passive users, earned NYER's "Best Use of Technology" award in 2013. Scott also built the first internal engineering team at Teachers Pay Teachers from 0 to 12, while integrating a high functioning remote team. In our conversation, Scott talks about his journey to management, lessons he has learned along the way, the value of transparency, why an empowering work environment is so important and much more. You’ll need pen and paper for this one - Scott has a ton of helpful insights to share. Outline of This Episode [0:40] I welcome my guest, Scott Carleton. [2:00] Scott talks about his background. [4:30] How did Scott get started on the management track? [6:25] Scott reflects on early mistakes he made as a manager. [9:00] The value of transparency. [10:40] Tips for new managers. [13:30] What does Scott’s day-to-day role look like as a Site Lead for Asana? [17:30] Navigating company culture in a distributed environment. [22:30] What makes Asana a Top 5 Best Place to Work? [27:00] Empowering employees and providing growth opportunities. [31:00] What does it take to be a top-notch engineering manager? [34:00] Using Slack the most effective way possible. [37:00] How to set your team up for success in your absence. [40:45] Book recommendations from Scott. The value of transparency Throughout your career, are there any values or principles that stand out to you as “Must-haves” to create an empowering work environment? Maybe for you, it’s integrity or competency. For Scott Carleton and the folks at Asana, one of the top values is transparency. Transparency is crucial, especially for a distributed company like Asana. Scott says that the value of transparency is constantly top-of-mind for him as he engages with his team and works to build consistency and collaboration at Asana. Hand-in-hand with transparency is Scott’s goal to make as much of their processes and systems as clear and understandable as possible. While this is no easy task, Scott is proud of the ground they’ve been able to cover thus far. How to empower your team members Any good manager worth their salt focuses not only on their team members’ productivity but also looks for ways to encourage and empower them as individuals. Can you think of a manager who has empowered you at critical moments in your career? What did they do that made their efforts stand out? From his time at Andela, Scott learned the value of providing his team members with applicable growth opportunities - not just any growth opportunity but - applicable ones. The difference here is key - while it might be a good experience for someone on your team to level up on JavaScript - if it doesn’t apply to the work they are currently engaged in it’s not really that helpful. How do you empower your team members? What growth opportunities do you provide them? Creating a healthy work environment At some point in their career - just about everyone encounters a dysfunctional and unhealthy work environment. How can leaders like you ensure that the environment you are building is a healthy and empowering one? One of the primary reasons Scott joined Asana is their relentless commitment to organizational health. They’ve created clear and concise pathways that encourage their managers and team members to reflect on and learn from projects that were successful and unsuccessful. It is of paramount importance to Asana as an organization that everyone understands how their tasks directly contribute to the overall mission of the company. To hear more about how this plays out at Asana - from Scott’s perspective - make sure to listen to this episode of Simple Leadership. What it takes to be an effective manager Let’s face it; life as a manager is not for the faint of heart. Yes, you get a lot of great opportunities to influence your team and make great strides for your organization, but there is also a fair share of challenges and obstacles that come with the territory. How do you navigate those challenges and serve as an effective manager? According to Scott Carleton, if you want to succeed as a manager, you’ve got to be willing to give your people honest feedback that helps them improve. We’ve all been in those one-on-one’s where the feedback you received was not helpful or constructive - don’t make that same mistake! Scott also points to the value of knowing your limitations and a willingness to be vulnerable as key aspects of an effective manager. Ask for help and be open about the challenges you are facing - what do you have to lose? Remember - this is only a snapshot of my conversation with Scott - make sure to listen to this episode of Simple Leadership to get the FULL conversation. Jeff Myers, in this interview with Ross Upshur, discusses the evolution of palliative care and the evidence that has accumulated outlining its impact on outcomes for patients, families, and systems. With early efficacy studies having focused on end-of-life experiences for patients with cancer, strong evidence now clearly delineates a role for palliative care from the time of diagnosis for any person with serious illness and their family. Serious illnesses are those that are incurable and progressive and include but not limited to heart failure, COPD, chronic kidney disease, neurodegenerative diseases, dementia, frailty as well as metastatic cancer. No longer should palliative care be thought of as the alternative to disease-focused care, it is as an added layer of support that must be provided alongside disease-focused care. This expansion of relevance raises several questions and creates both opportunities and challenges for the growing discipline. What is it about the palliative care approach that makes such a difference in the experience of patients and families? Can the palliative care needs of patient populations be met by a limited number of palliative care clinicians? What changes in our medical training programs as well as those of other professions would better prepare our clinicians of the future to address complex palliative care needs?  Jeff and Ross discuss these and other questions as they address the complex nature of palliative care clinical service and educational delivery. Dr. Jeff Myers, MD, MSEd, CCFP(PC), is a palliative medicine physician who joined the Sinai Health System Toronto in July 2017 as Site Lead for the Bridgepoint Palliative Care Unit. He is an Associate Professor at the University of Toronto and for the past five years has been Head of the Division of Palliative Care within the Department of Family and Community Medicine. He currently holds the W. Gifford-Jones Professorship in Palliative Care and his academic interests include complexity theory in palliative care, person-centered decision-making and learner assessment in competency-based education. Coming up on Biotechnology Focus Radio : The future of made-in-Canada CAR-T cells looks bright, Roche Canada and Merck each launch their own individual collaborative cancer research initiatives, and using immunotherapies to kill brain cancer Welcome to another episode of Biotechnology Focus Radio. I’m your host Shawn Lawrence, here to give you a rundown of this week’s top stories on the Canadian biotech scene. As you can tell by our teaser intro, cancer research and new initiatives into new therapies to tackle the disease figure prominently in our news headlines this week, and this is not a coincidence as February happens to be National Cancer Prevention Awareness Month. Story 1 On that note, our first story takes us to Ottawa, ON, where a team of researchers at the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario (CHEO) have made a discovery, featured in Nature, center around a promising combination of immunotherapies that are able to deliver a one-two punch to brain cancer tumours in mice.  Led by Dr. Robert Korneluk, distinguished professor at the University of Ottawa and senior scientist at the CHEO Research Institute, the Ottawa reseach team was able to show in mice that a combination of drugs known as SMAC Mimetics and immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) amplifies kill rates of cancer tumour cells in laboratory testing. The research team also discovered a new mechanism by which the combination promotes long-term immunity against glioblastoma tumours. The combination therapy also proved to be highly effective against breast cancer and multiple myeloma. According to Dr. Korneluk, these findings represent a significant evolution in the field of immunotherapy, for the first time showing the synergistic tumour-killing impact of combining SMAC Mimetics with immune checkpoint inhibitors for glioblastoma. As part of this latest project SMAC Mimetics known as LCL161 and Birinapant were combined with ICI antibodies targeting PD-1 and CTLA-4 immune checkpoints. The findings have their roots in research conducted back in 2014, when a team of scientists led by Dr. Korneluk discovered that combining SMAC Mimetics with immune stimulators or live virus therapies had a synergistic or amplified tumour-killing effect that was greater than either agent on its own. Today’s news shows that SMAC Mimetics also have a powerful synergistic effect with ICIs, relatively new drugs that are showing great promise in the clinic. Eric Lacasse, a scientist at the CHEO Research Institute, adds that two drug companies have initiated human clinical trials this year to assess the impact of this combination of SMAC Mimetics and ICIs on patients with a variety of cancers. Although it could be years before any clinical trials begin for adults or children with the deadly brain cancer, glioblastoma, we’re looking forward to seeing how scientific evidence from these experimental treatments adds to our knowledge. It’s an exciting, exploratory field and we hope we’ve hit a home run.” Shawn Beug was the lead author of both the 2014 and 2017 papers, and the research was funded by the Canadian Cancer Society Research Institute, Brain Canada (with financial support from Health Canada through the Canada Brain Research Fund) and the Canadian Institutes of Health Research. In addition, the work was supported by donations to the Ottawa Regional Cancer Foundation, the Kiwanis Medical Foundation and the CHEO Foundation. Story 2 Continuing with the Cancer Research theme, Hoffmann-La Roche Limited (Roche Canada) reports that Toronto’s Princess Margaret Cancer Centre has joined the company's global cancer immunotherapy Centres of Research Excellence (imCORE) Network. The network brings together the world's leading scientific and clinical experts in cancer immunotherapy to collaborate on the investigation and development of promising new treatment approaches for the disease. As part of gaining a better understanding immune biology and cancer, and to ultimately improve treatment options, this includes initiating pre-clinical and clinical research based on the latest scientific discoveries in cancer immunotherapy and to aggregate, as well as share data within the Network to help accelerate research for people living with cancer.  The imCORE Network is comprised of 21 academic centres, inclusive of Princess Margaret Cancer Centre, from nine countries across the globe.   Dr. Lillian Siu, medical oncologist at Princess Margaret Cancer Centre and Site Lead for the imCORE Network explains why the imCORE newtwork is exciting in the follow audio clip. http://stream1.newswire.ca/media/2017/02/14/20170214_C8704_VIDEO_EN_881863.mp4 As a part of a global announcement regarding the launch of the imCORE Network, Roche has also made a commitment to invest up to 100 million Swiss Francs (more than $130 million Canadian dollars) to support basic and clinical research collaborations related to cancer immunotherapy. Story 3 In an exciting public/private partnership, stakeholders in Quebec have launched a new research, development and investment hub to help accelerate the fight against cancer. The hub, called Oncopole is backed by a $15-million investment by Merck that will be administered over three years and overseen by the Fonds de recherche du Québec – Santé (FRQS). Through its model, Oncopole brings together various stakeholders under one flagship hub in oncology. It’s conception was structured with the involvement of more than 50 experts from the scientific community over the past year, who helped to identify its priorities. Recognizing the range of resources and infrastructures currently available as well as the strategic positioning of many researchers in Québec, the Hub will aspire to strengthen the research and innovation ecosystem in the province. Some functions of Oncopole will include enabling the incubation and creation of companies that will capitalize on innovation; and positioning cancer care in Québec among the best in the world in terms of clinical outcome, patient experience and system efficiency. Based on a thorough analysis of the various hosting possibilities identified across Québec, the Institute for Research in Immunology and Cancer (IRIC) of the Université de Montréal was selected as the establishment which will host the Oncopole’s coordinating offices. Additionally, the FRQS and Merck hope that this initial investment will attract other partners to join the Oncopole and make it a truly collaborative initiative. Story 4     Switching gears to the bioindustrial sector, the Biotechnology Innovation Organization (BIO) announces that registration and housing are now open for the 2017 World Congress on Industrial Biotechnology. The conference, now in its 14th year brings brings together from across the globe business leaders, investors, academics and policymakers in the biofuels, biobased products, renewable chemicals, synthetic biology, food ingredients and biomass sectors. Industrial and environmental biotechnology is at the forefront of the biobased economy, generating good-paying jobs and making cleaner products and processes. This year event will be held July 23-26, 2017 at the Palais des congrès de Montréal in Montréal, Canada. According to Brent Erickson, executive vice president, Industrial and Environmental at BIO, two new tracks-Flavors, Fragrances and Food Ingredients and Agricultural Crop Technologies and Biomass Supply-have been added to this year’s programming, representing the extended value chain of industrial biotechnology. He adds that the decision to bring the World Congress back to Montréal had very much to do with the success of past events, and the local industries continues support of what has grown into the world’s largest industrial biotechnology conference. In 2016, the BIO World Congress on Industrial Biotechnology drew around 907 industry leaders from 529 companies, 32 countries and 31 states, as well as the District of Columbia and hosted a record 1,961 partnering meetings. For more information on the conference visit http://www.bio.org/worldcongress. Story 4 In our final story this week, BioCanRx, and its partners, are investing $11 million to support 16 collaborative research projects in novel therapies to cure cancer. including research aimed at developing Canada’s clinical Chimeric Antigen Receptor modified T cell (CAR-T) manufacturing capabilities. Considered a powerful new tool in the fight against cancer, CAR-T is on the cutting edge of cancer therapeutics, showing promise in paediatric and adult patients with certain blood cancers such as acute lymphoblastic leukemia and lymphoma. While promising, the development of such therapies require sophisticated manufacturing and expertise. Canada currently does have the basic laboratory infrastructure in place, and with this funding could take significant steps towards fully developing the expertise and capacity required to deliver this technology. The BioCanRx investment is going to research projects that will advance several innovative engineered T cell designs, to accelerate delivery of these novel concepts into clinical testing in Canada. Dr. John Bell, Scientific Director, BioCanRx adds his CAR-T manufacturing initiative is unique in that it represents the Canadian academic community recognizing a gap and stepping up to drive Canadian solutions to meet grassroots efforts taking place in the U.S., China and Europe. He discusses CAR-T cell manufacturing in Canada in the following audio provided by BioCanRX: https://biocanrx.com/wp-content/uploads/custom%20images/BioCanRx_Dr_JohnBellCART3.mp4 To help ensure CAR-T cell therapy is brought to patients safely and effectively, BioCanRx is funding a companion Clinical, Social, and Economic Impact project. It will review the existing base of knowledge and involve patient consultation to design a rigorous CAR-T clinical trial protocol ready to implement once the products are ready for a phase 1 clinical trial. Dr. Manoj Lalu, associate scientist, assistant professor, Clinical Epidemiology and Regenerative Medicine Programs, Ottawa Hospital Research Institute, The Ottawa Hospital and Department of Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine, University of Ottawa discusses CAR-T therapy clinical trial design in the following audio clip. https://biocanrx.com/wp-content/uploads/custom%20images/Dr.%20Lalu%20-%20BioCanRx.mp4 To access the full list of the 16 projects funded, be sure to visit https://biocanrx.com/project-dashboards.   Well that wraps up another episode of the Biotechnology Focus Podcast.
