Confessions of a Higher Ed Social Media Manager
Ep. 33: Turning Social Media into Your Top Recruitment Tool

Confessions of a Higher Ed Social Media Manager

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 6, 2025 26:03

Host Jenny sits down with Mikki Collins, a former higher ed social media manager at the University of Chichester, who shares her transformative journey in leveraging social media as a key recruitment tool. From developing student influencer programs to driving engagement on platforms like TikTok and Instagram, Mikki provides actionable insights into creating authentic connections and making the most of limited resources. Listen in as they discuss how higher ed social media professionals can shift their mindset from communications to strategic marketing.Key TakeawaysStudent Influencers are Gold: Current students and graduates are often the most effective voices for reaching prospective students.Adapt to Platform Dynamics: TikTok has evolved from a discovery platform to a search engine—use it strategically at different stages of the recruitment funnel.Targeted Content Wins: Tailor content to different stages of the recruitment funnel, from generating awareness to nurturing conversions.Leverage Social Listening: Search university nicknames and hashtags to uncover organic student-created content and trends.Metrics with Intent: Align success metrics (e.g., reach, engagement) with the goals for each recruitment funnel stage.Sustainable Social Media Practices: To avoid burnout, delete work-related social media apps during breaks and maintain healthy work-life boundaries. How Mikki Got Started in Higher Ed Social Media Mikki Collins began her career in higher education through a unique route, starting as a Student Union officer and later transitioning to a digital content role. She quickly gravitated toward social media as a tool to engage students, working with limited resources to grow the University of Chichester's online presence. Mikki's small team transformed from social media novices into UK leaders in higher ed social media by experimenting with tactics that resonated with their target audiences.Using Students as Influencers Mikki was an early adopter of the "students as influencers" concept. Realizing that prospective students wanted to hear from their peers, she used Instagram's Q&A feature and hashtags to discover students who were already creating authentic, high-engagement content about the university. This strategy uncovered micro and macro influencers—like one student with 300,000 followers—who were eager to collaborate. By partnering with these students, Mikki's team amplified the university's reach and authenticity, fostering trust among prospective students.TikTok as a Recruitment Tool TikTok played a pivotal role in Mikki's strategy. Starting the university's account in 2019, her team grew it from an underutilized platform to the most-followed account within a year. By creating playful, tongue-in-cheek content, they broke through the noise and raised awareness of the university—even in its local community.Mikki shared how TikTok evolved from a discovery platform to a search engine. Early in the recruitment cycle, her team worked with student influencers who had large followings to generate awareness. As TikTok shifted to a search-first platform, they partnered with students who had smaller audiences to create content that addressed specific prospective student concerns, such as accommodations and campus life.Building a Social Media Funnel One of the episode's standout moments was Mikki's explanation of the recruitment funnel and how social media fits into it. She described creating content tailored to each stage:Awareness Stage: Share general information about the university, location, and events to attract prospective students. Success metrics here include reach and impressions.Conversion Stage: Focus on personalized content, such as Q&A sessions and campus tours, to address specific concerns and keep prospective students engaged. Metrics for this stage include comments, direct messages, and content shares.Mikki also emphasized the importance of social listening—using hashtags and search terms like university nicknames—to understand what content students are already creating and searching for. By consistently revisiting these insights each year, institutions can adapt their strategies to evolving student needs.Sustaining Work-Life Balance as a Social Media Manager Mikki ended the conversation with an important confession: she deleted LinkedIn from her phone over the holidays and hasn't reinstalled it since. As a social media professional, she understands the risks of burnout and advocates for intentional breaks from work-related platforms. Her advice: don't be afraid to temporarily delete social apps or establish boundaries to maintain a healthy balance.Guest Name: Mikki Collins, Content and Experience Designer, Pickle Jar CommunicationsGuest Social: LinkedInGuest Bio: Mikki Collins is the Content and Experience Designer at Pickle Jar Communications and has a strong social media background in the Higher Education sector and proven award-winning experience for digital content campaigns and projects she has produced. She previously worked for the University of Chichester as their Digital Content Producer for 5.5 years. I am delighted to share this imperfectly perfect conversation with Dr Alison Raby who is Senior Lecturer in Business Communication/College Senior Tutor/Programme Leader at the University of Lincoln. I reached out to Alison after reading her article about international students and how best to support them when they first arrive in the UK. Why do we want international students to assimilate and to fit in? How do we ensure international students thrive and flourish in our UK Universities? We cover so much in this episode and if you are interested in the internationalisation of universities, I think this episode is for you.

That strategy is now colliding with limits on immigration.(4) The Democratic National Committee is considering formally nominating Joe Biden as early as mid-July to ensure that the president is on November ballots, while helping to stamp out intra-party chatter of replacing him after last week's poor debate performance.(5) The criminal trial over Donald Trump's attempt to overturn the 2020 election could be delayed for a year or more after the US Supreme Court ruled Monday that presidents have some immunity for their “official” acts. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Jake Watson is the writer of thedataplatform.substack.com and Principal Data Engineer at The Oakland Group. MLOps podcast #207 with Jake Watson, Principal Data Engineer at The Oakland Group, How Data Platforms Affect ML & AI. // Abstract I've always told my clients and colleagues that traditional rule-based software is difficult, but software containing Artificial Intelligence (AI) and/or Machine Learning (ML)* is even more difficult, sometimes impossible. Why is this the case? Well, software is difficult because it's like flying a plane while building it at the same time, but because AI and ML make rules on the fly based on various factors like training data, it's like trying to build a plane in flight, but some parts of the plane will be designed by a machine, and you have little idea what that is going to look like till the machine finishes. This double goes for more cutting-edge AI models like GPT, where only the creators of the software have a vague idea of what it will output. This makes software with AI / ML more of a scientific experiment than engineering, which is going to make your project manager lose their mind when you have little idea how long a task is going to take. But what will make everyone's lives easier is having solid data foundations to work from. What does diversity, equity, and inclusion in content creation look like? To Mikki Collins, it was this: real, unfiltered stories told by more than one student in a format that could both go deep and was built to last. So, she built a podcast for the University of Chichester centered around authenticity and honesty. In the third series of the podcast, she wanted to feature true stories from her campus' minority and underrepresented groups, even when the stories weren't all positive. As a result, the university reached almost 10 times its student population on social, doubled the engagement from non-followers, and won a few awards, including the ContentEd Champion for DIversity, Equity and Inclusion Award in 2022 and the National Student Pride Inclusive University of the Year Award in 2023.Watch the Be You podcast series three episodes: https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLMwhF7NaFQJxaE1X4LMUj7Y6Bq-cwRxEh&feature=sharedGuest Name: Mikki CollinsGuests Social Handle: https://www.linkedin.com/in/mikki-collins-36b631146/Guest Bio: Mikki is an award-winning Content and Experience Designer for Pickle Jar Communications. A post for: Young EAs looking to apply for undergraduate courses at top UK universities (e.g. Oxford & Cambridge) EAs in contact with high school students who they may wish to refer for UK admissions support (e.g. students who have engaged with EA through outreach programmes or their local EA group) I'm offering a free programme of 1:1 admissions support for EAs applying to top UK universities in the forthcoming admissions cycle. Goals of the programme To provide young EAs with support in preparing for UK university applications, particularly to the most elite and competitive universities such as Oxford & Cambridge. Rationale: by gaining admission to the most elite and high quality universities, EAs increase their chance of having impactful academic and career opportunities in the future. To guide & mentor young EAs in degree course/major choices to best suit their interests and abilities, and to facilitate their long term academic/career goals. Rationale: by choosing the most appropriate degree course, EAs will be better placed to facilitate their future plans and optimise their future impact. The Programme - Apply Here! The programme is free of charge. Successful applicants will receive remote 1:1 support, with regular sessions to support with application preparation, including: Choosing a degree course Strategic university choices (& Oxbridge college choices) Supercurricular development Preparing the UCAS personal statement (& SAQ for Cambridge) Preparing for admissions tests and interviews If the programme is oversubscribed with eligible applicants, support may also be offered via group sessions, webinars, resources, and correspondence. The programme is being run pro bono by Hannah Rowberry, a Cambridge graduate and former Oxford Admissions & Access Officer, now working as admissions consultant. Hannah developed her interests in EA through volunteering with SHIC, developing EA resources and programmes for schools. Eligibility and selection priorities You are eligible to apply for this programme if: You are applying to UK universities for undergraduate courses in the forthcoming admissions cycle (i.e. October 15th 2022 or January 25th 2023 deadlines) If you are applying in subsequent years, but would like guidance on your current preparations for university, please get in touch. You are interested in effective altruism, and would like to pursue this further within your studies and career You have a strong academic profile and would be able to make a competitive application to top UK universities, such as Oxford and Cambridge (e.g. you have mostly 7/8/9s at GCSE, and are predicted A/As in your A levels) Priorities in selection if oversubscribed: Students with a strong commitment and interest in effective altruism, with clear intention to pursue this within their studies and careers UK universities are your main (or equal) priority compared to other options globally Students with fewer sources of support elsewhere (e.g. your school does not have much expertise in UK/Oxbridge admissions) Students from backgrounds which are underrepresented in UK universities (minority ethnic background, first generation, low income household, disabled) Note that all eligible students are encouraged to apply, the above prioritisation will only be used if oversubscribed, to prioritise the programme for students who will most benefit from support. Application process Please make an application via the Application Form. Applications will be considered on a rolling basis, however spaces are limited, so early application is recommended. If you have any questions or would like to find out more, please feel free to get in touch or connect via LinkedIn.If you are...
