Building Gene's Dispensary: Community, Curation, and Creating New Art Spaces in Los Angeles with Keith J Varadi In this wide-ranging conversation on What's My Thesis?, host Javier Proenza welcomes artist, curator, and writer Keith J. Varadi, founder of Gene's Dispensary, for an illuminating discussion on forging alternative pathways in the contemporary art world. Through candid reflection, Varadi shares their journey from painting to sound art, music, and ultimately to the establishment of their independent gallery space in Los Angeles—a project that has rapidly become a vibrant hub for creative cross-pollination. Drawing on years of experience as both a practicing artist and an accomplished curator—with writing credits in Carla, Flash Art, Kaleidoscope, and Los Angeles Review of Books—Varadi discusses how health challenges, a deep commitment to community-building, and a rigorous interdisciplinary ethos led to the creation of Gene's Dispensary. Operating in the heart of Los Angeles at 2007 Wilshire Boulevard, Unit 820, Gene's Dispensary takes inspiration from DIY spaces, Black Mountain College, and the inclusive spirit of early L.A. dispensary culture. Over the course of the episode, Varadi reflects on studying at Rutgers and Virginia Commonwealth University, their experience living in New York and Pittsburgh, and the evolving sense of belonging they found upon relocating to Los Angeles. Topics explored include the challenges and possibilities of starting an art space without institutional funding, building a collector base from scratch, integrating musicians, comedians, and writers into gallery programming, and the nuances of L.A.'s cultural landscape compared to New York. Highlights include a behind-the-scenes look at Gene's Dispensary's chess tournaments, multidisciplinary performances, and the gallery's mission to dissolve boundaries between visual art and other forms of creative practice. Varadi also offers insight into the gallery's namesake, paying homage to socialist leader Eugene V. Debs and affirming a commitment to equitable practices within the art market. Whether you are an artist seeking alternative models of sustainability, a curator interested in community engagement, or simply an art lover curious about the dynamic intersections of creativity in Los Angeles, this episode offers a compelling portrait of persistence, generosity, and invention. TAYLOR SWIFT is replaced by KATY PERRY as captain of the WHITE BITCHUS. OHH. That's what happened. Because let's be honest, what is scarier than either of them? Answer: their even whiter fan bases. THE SWIFTIES form a small militia and revolt the decision to overturn the organization and reinstate TAYLOR TWIFT to her former position, which she has made clear; she does not want. Her fans, the swifties, however, do not seem to actually care genuinely about Taylor, her opinions, or outlook on things and not remarkably or surprisingly at all, just kind of have their own agenda and previously instilled beliefs— The Katy Perry fandom, though slightly more aged and less willing to participate in an all out war, begin to stage a defensive coup in order to protect their chosen leader. Since Michigan legalized marijuana more than five years ago, cannabis has become pretty visible in everyday life. Dispensaries are everywhere, you can get marijuana in the form of candy and baked goods, and the industry is generating billions of dollars every year. But there’s also growing concern about how that normalization is affecting kids. A record number of Michigan kids were hospitalized last year for cannabis, according to the state’s poison control center. In the last five years, they received about 1,500 reports of kids under the age of six being exposed to or ingesting CBD, THC, or other cannabis products. We’re talking with Michigan Public reporters Kate Wells and Adam Yahya Rayes. They’ve been digging into what the numbers tell us, talking to parents, doctors, and people in the cannabis industry about why this is happening.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

In this episode, Michael Zaytsev (aka Professor Z) sits down with Peter Barsoom, CEO and Co-Founder of 1906, to talk about the next wave of cannabis consumption. From fast-acting edibles to THC beverage innovation, Peter shares how 1906 is meeting the demands of modern wellness culture, without the weed hangover. After a career leading strategy at American Express, Morgan Stanley, and Merrill Lynch, Peter left finance in 2015 to pursue a bold vision: make cannabis functional, fast-acting, and part of daily wellness rituals. Today, 1906 is a leader in precision-dosed, effect-driven cannabis products sold in dispensaries and online. Its latest product, Off Duty, is a discreet, sugar-free, unflavored THC+CBD beverage additive designed for the post-alcohol and sober-curious consumer. As New Frontier Data reports, 51% of cannabis consumers have already tried an infused beverage, and 41% of consumers under 40 express strong interest in this category. 1906 is leaning into that demand and building the future of functional cannabis one drink at a time. Topics Discussed:

Tucked away in a small business park near the Annapolis Bowl, is an oasis of sorts. There arae plenty of buds, flowers, and greenery at Thrive Dispensary. Alex Swartz is the Retail Director for the business that also has a location in Upper Marlboro, and he gave me a tour and a lesson all about weed in 2025. First off, to dispell any false narratives, dispensaries today are run much more professionally and securely than most other busiensses--mostly due to regulation. But today, I learned about the experience of the budtenders, the different afflictions that cannabis can help, the differences between recreational and medical, and a whole lot more. Have a listen!
