===== MDJ Script/ Top Stories for October 17th Publish Date: October 17th Commercial: From the BG AD Group Studio, Welcome to the Marietta Daily Journal Podcast. Today is Friday, October 17th and Happy Birthday to Alan Jackson I’m Keith Ippolito and here are the stories Cobb is talking about, presented by Times Journal Cobb County Sheriff's Office welcomes newest GED graduates ACT scores increase in Cobb, dip in Marietta KSU student arrested after protesting Charlie Kirk memorial Plus, Leah McGrath from Ingles Markets on grass fed beef All of this and more is coming up on the Marietta Daily Journal Podcast, and if you are looking for community news, we encourage you to listen and subscribe! BREAK: Ingles Markets 10 STORY 1: Cobb County Sheriff's Office welcomes newest GED graduates The Cobb County Sheriff’s Office hosted its third GED graduation of the year on Oct. 8, right inside the Adult Detention Center. Seven detainees walked away with diplomas in hand—proof that change is possible, even behind bars. Since the program launched in March 2024, over 30 detainees have earned their GEDs. The ceremony was heartfelt, with speeches from Chief Deputy Rhonda Anderson, Col. Michael Williams, and Dr. Kim Kranzlin of Cobb Adult Education. The program isn’t easy—four subjects, a minimum score of 145, and 40+ hours of study. But for these seven, it’s a step toward something better. STORY 2: ACT scores increase in Cobb, dip in Marietta ACT scores are in, and Cobb County is celebrating its highest average in four years, while Marietta High saw a slight dip. Cobb’s average jumped to 23.7 (up 0.9 points), while Marietta landed at 22.2 (down 0.5). Both still outpaced state (21.4) and national (19.4) averages. Wheeler High led Cobb with a stellar 28.5 average, even climbing 2.5 points from last year. Meanwhile, Marietta students continued to outperform state and national peers in every subject, despite the slight drop. “Success takes time,” said Marietta Superintendent Grant Rivera. “Hard work and curiosity drive our students forward.” Georgia students, for the ninth year, beat the national average. STORY 3: KSU student arrested after protesting Charlie Kirk memorial A protest at Kennesaw State University’s memorial for conservative activist Charlie Kirk ended in chaos Tuesday night, with one student, Luca Compiani, 18, arrested on charges of battery and obstruction. According to police, Compiani “intentionally” bumped into KSU Police Capt. Timothy Murphy in a “provoking manner” and fled when confronted. Protesters, however, claim the situation was escalated unnecessarily, calling the arrest “a gross abuse of authority.” The memorial, hosted by Young Americans for Liberty, drew both supporters and protesters. Some shouted chants, others threw ketchup at a flag. Despite the tension, organizers said the event achieved its goal: promoting free speech—even amid dissent. We have opportunities for sponsors to get great engagement on these shows. Call 770.799.6810 for more info. We’ll be right back. Break: Ingles Markets 10 STORY 4: 1,100+ voters cast ballots on Day 1 of early voting Nearly 1,200 Cobb County voters turned out Monday for the first day of early voting, with Marietta leading the charge. Of the 1,193 ballots cast, 481 came from the Cobb Elections Main Office, while Mableton saw 221 voters at the South Cobb Community Center. Michael D’Itri, acting director of Cobb Elections, said turnout usually starts strong, dips mid-period, then surges in the final days. For Marietta voter Chris Danos, 28, the mayoral race is top of mind. “We need better transportation options,” he said. Meanwhile, Dan and Vicki Rupnow, who moved from Atlanta, love Marietta’s walkability and lighter traffic. “It’s perfect for us,” they said. STORY 5: OUT AND ABOUT: 5 things to do this weekend in Cobb County — Oct. 17 - 19 Marietta HarvestFest Marietta Square is the place to be this Saturday for HarvestFest—think scarecrows, costumes, games, and all the fall vibes. It's Thursday, October 16th, A.D. 2025. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard on 140 radio stations and at www.TheWorldview.com. I'm Adam McManus. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Jonathan Clark British Christian teacher fired for Facebook post about Islamic violence A British Christian teacher, who was unjustly fired, shared his testimony at a Reform UK party free speech conference last week. Simon Pearson had a 20-year unblemished teaching record. However, Preston College dismissed him last year for allegedly being “Islamaphobic.” He had simply expressed concern on Facebook over violent crime and political bias. Pearson is challenging his dismissal with the help of the Christian Legal Centre. Listen to his comments at the free speech conference. PEARSON: “Previously, I've worked as a missionary in a communist country where freedom of speech and religion are tightly controlled. I know what it means to live under a regime where truth is suppressed and conscience is punished. “I never imagined I would face similar pressures in the United Kingdom, a country built on the foundations of liberty, of justice and of Christian values. I'm fighting for justice, not just for myself, but for every teacher, for every Christian and every citizen who fears that their voice no longer matters and they are being silenced.” Young people of Northern Ireland more open to Christianity Speaking of the United Kingdom, young people in Northern Ireland are leading a revival of interest in Christianity, according to a poll by The Iona Institute. The survey found 18-24-year-olds in Northern Ireland are more likely to have a very positive attitude toward Christianity than any other age group. These findings are similar to studies of young people in Ireland, Britain, and the United States. Gen Z boys most likely to believe that Jesus is way to Heaven Here in America, the Barna Group released new research from its ongoing State of the Church initiative. Surveys show that Gen Z is increasingly open to Christian faith. However, among young people, women are the most likely to disengage from church, prayer, and belief. Meanwhile, young men and especially teenage boys are the least likely to identify as having no faith among young people. They are also the most likely to believe in God and that Jesus Christ is the only way to God. In John 14:6, Jesus said, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.” Fewer young Americans identifying as “transgender” Here some more good news. Trans identification is declining among young people in America. Eric Kaufmann, a Canadian professor of politics, posted the findings on Tuesday. His analysis is based on multiple data sets, including those from the Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression. The data shows 3.6% of undergraduates identify as a gender other than male or female. That's down from 5.2% in 2024 and 6.8% in 2022. The data sets also showed young people are becoming less likely to identify as something other than heterosexual. Trump posthumously awarded Charlie Kirk Presidential Medal of Freedom President Donald Trump posthumously awarded Charlie Kirk with the Presidential Medal of Freedom on Tuesday. Kirk's widow, Erika, received the nation's highest civilian medal on his behalf on what would have been his 32nd birthday. The ceremony comes about a month after the Christian activist was fatally shot while speaking at an event for his organization, Turning Point USA. Listen to comments from President Trump. TRUMP: “Charlie never missed an opportunity to remind us of the Judeo-Christian principles of our nation's founding or to share his deep Christian faith. In his final moments, Charlie testified to the greatness of America and to the glory of our Savior with Whom he now rests in Heaven. Anniversary of martyrdom of two English reformers And finally, today is the anniversary of the martyrdom of two English Reformers. Their names were Hugh Latimer and Nicholas Ridley. Both were bishops in the Church of England. Ridley was born in 1502, becoming a great scholar and renouncing Roman Catholic doctrine. Latimer was born earlier in 1485. He became a great Reformation preacher, also rejecting Catholic traditions. His preaching brought Protestant teachings effectively to the middle and lower classes. However, a Catholic queen came to power in England in 1553. She was known as “Bloody Mary” for her deadly persecution of Protestants. After her ascension to power, Latimer and Ridley were tried for their beliefs and burned at the stake on October 16, 1555. As they faced death together, Latimer told his friend, “Be of good comfort, Master Ridley, and play the man; we shall this day light such a candle, by God's grace, in England, as I trust shall never be put out.” In Romans 8:36-37, the Apostle Paul wrote, “As it is written: ‘For Your sake we are killed all day long; we are accounted as sheep for the slaughter.' Yet in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us.” Close And that's The Worldview on this Thursday, October 16th, in the year of our Lord 2025, the 60th wedding anniversary of my parents, Mike and Harriet McManus, with whom I will celebrate this very weekend. Freddie Sayers sits down with Professor of Politics at the University of Buckingham, Eric Kaufmann, to discuss his latest report on “The Decline of Trans and Queer Identity among Young Americans”, which reveals a significant and surprising shift in the landscape of gender and sexual identity among Generation Z. Professor Kaufmann explains his findings, which show a sharp drop in both trans and queer identification since 2023. Drawing on data from large-scale surveys of US undergraduates, he details how the share of trans-identified students has nearly halved in just two years. Their discussion explores the data, including trends in elite institutions, and delves into the potential reasons for this decline. Is it linked to changes in mental health, the growing distance from the pandemic and lockdowns, or the so-called “anti-woke” vibe shift? Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

In this episode of the Plain Speech Podcast, I sit down with Darin Stidd, a former pastor turned grassroots political activist with Young Americans for Liberty. Darin brings a rare combination of pastoral heart, sharp theology, and boots-on-the-ground political experience.Together, we tackle some of the most pressing questions Christians are asking right now:Should Christians really care about politics if Jesus said, “My kingdom is not of this world”?What does Romans 13 actually teach about submission to government? How should we think about separation of church and state? Why “just preach the gospel” is a gnostic distortion of Christianity. What ordinary Christians can do to push back against tyranny without running for office. Why most politicians don't care about right and wrong — and how Christians can still force them to do the right thing. How just 3% plus one of engaged citizens can change the course of politics in your state.Derin is convinced that Christians must bring their theology into the public square and learn to wield power in ways that honor Christ. This conversation will challenge you to think biblically, act courageously, and refuse to sit on the Stiddelines. If you're in the Northern Kentucky / Greater Cincinnati area, join us Saturday, October 25, 2025 for a free seminar with Derin Stidd:Obey God, Defy Tyrants: A Grassroots Theology of Politics

On this week's episode of Friends Talking Nerdy, Professor Aubrey and Tim the Nerd turn their ears toward one of the most expressive instruments in music history: the saxophone. From Bob Seger's hauntingly beautiful “Turn The Page” to the iconic smoothness of Wham's “Careless Whisper,” the duo digs into the way the saxophone can transform a song into something timeless. They groove through the Rolling Stones' laid-back “Waiting On A Friend,” dance with Bowie's “Modern Love,” feel the epic storytelling in Springsteen's “Jungleland,” and toast with the classic party anthem “Tequila” by The Champs. The journey continues with Aretha Franklin's powerhouse hit “Respect,” the soulful yearning of INXS' “Never Tear Us Apart,” the rock ‘n' roll roots of Bill Haley's “Shake, Rattle, and Roll,” and another Bowie gem, “Young Americans.”Check out the playlist on YouTube Music. In the second half of the show, Tim the Nerd reflects on the passing of professional wrestling icon Hulk Hogan. While acknowledging Hogan as the spark that first drew him into the world of wrestling, Tim candidly explores the complicated legacy Hogan leaves behind—both as a larger-than-life performer and as a deeply flawed man. He emphasizes the importance of being honest about public figures' lives, for better and worse, while also calling out the extremes of online criticism that turned into harassment of Hogan's loved ones. It's a thoughtful, music-filled episode blending appreciation for the power of the saxophone with a nuanced conversation about legacy, fandom, and the messy ways we talk about the people who shaped pop culture. As always, we wish to thank Christopher Lazarek for his wonderful theme song. On Wednesday 10 September Charlie Kirk was shot dead at a university campus in Utah. Charlie Kirk was a conservative activist who founded the student organisation, Turning Point USA. It aims to spread conservative ideas in liberal universities and now has chapters at more than 850 colleges. Kirk became known for his controversial views and was accused of being racist, misogynistic and trans-phobic. He held open-air debates on campuses across the country, where he tried to win people over to his thinking. Clips of these conversations were posted on his social media accounts and often went viral. Turning Point USA played a key role in the get-out-the-vote effort for Donald Trump and other Republican candidates in the 2024 election. He was also widely credited with helping to register tens of thousands of new voters. BBC reporter Nathalia Jimenez explains Charlie Kirk's appeal to young Americans and how he managed to become so ubiquitous online. And we hear from students who followed him and debated with him. Devoted Know Your Enemy listeners will recall that, in November 2021, we released a fairly dense, theory-driven episode on Frank Meyer, the Communist from New Jersey whose exploits on behalf of the Party in the UK got him kicked out of the country and back to the United States, where he eventually turned right and became a key figure in the post-war U.S. conservative movement, both as an editor at National Review and an architect of institutions like the American Conservative Union, Young Americans for Freedom, and the Conservative Party of New York. Of course, we had more to say about Meyer, and we're devoting another episode to him, this time focused on the details of his incredible life, thanks to the publication of an extraordinary new biography of Meyer, Daniel J. Flynn's The Man Who Invented Conservatism: The Unlikely Life of Frank S. Meyer. Flynn discovered a trove of never-before-seen papers of Meyer's that range from personal documents (tax returns, Christmas cards from Joan Didion, his dance card from college) to his correspondence with nearly every conservative writer and intellectual of note in the 1950s and 60s. Armed with these files, Flynn offers a vivid portrait of a brilliant, eccentric political life and mind.Listen again: "Frank Meyer: Father of Fusionism" (November 10, 2021)Sources:Daniel J. In this episode of Thinking Out Loud, Nathan and Cameron engage in a thoughtful, theologically grounded discussion on the changing political and cultural landscape in America, using the recent New York City mayoral primary as a springboard. They reflect on the growing appeal of socialism and even communism among younger voters, and explore why traditional capitalist and conservative frameworks are increasingly being rejected. Rather than dismissing these trends as youthful ignorance, Nathan and Cameron dig deeper—analyzing the plausibility structures, economic realities, and cultural narratives shaping a generation that feels disconnected from ownership, community, and purpose. For Christians seeking a deeper understanding of how theology intersects with politics, freedom, and societal change, this conversation offers wisdom, nuance, and a much-needed reminder of where our ultimate hope must lie.DONATE LINK: https://toltogether.com/donate BOOK A SPEAKER: https://toltogether.com/book-a-speakerJOIN TOL CONNECT: https://toltogether.com/tol-connect TOL Connect is an online forum where TOL listeners can continue the conversation begun on the podcast.

Whether it be military service or some other kind of service to the public, would America be better off if young Americans were required to join in some sort of service for the betterment of the country?
At the height of leftwing activism in the Sixties, conservatives funded tax-deducible rightwing groups on campuses to counter Black Power, demands for ethnic studies, and the New Left. As historian Lauren Shephard illustrates, such groups like Young Americans for Freedom groomed future Republican leaders and influential conservatives, like Karl Rove and Newt Gingrich, where they learned to spin unpopular politics as popular. What if everything you've been told about socialism is a lie—and the people who promote it have never actually lived through it? Studio Sponsor: Cardio Miracle - "Unlock the secret to a healthier heart, increased energy levels, and transform your cardiovascular fitness like never before.": CardioMiracle.com/TBNS In this eye-opening episode of The Brian Nichols Show, we sit down with Cuban-born dissident Gaby Blanco to uncover what life is really like under socialism and communism—not in theory, but in cold, brutal reality. Forget the utopian promises of “free” education and healthcare. Gaby shares the raw truth about growing up in Cuba, a place where religion was banned, bicycles replaced cars, and families were split for decades just to escape the regime. We dive deep into her powerful argument for why the West, especially the United States, must rethink how it deals with Latin American dictatorships. Gaby makes a bold case for using tariffs and sanctions—not as economic warfare, but as moral tools to cut off the lifelines propping up these oppressive governments. And she doesn't flinch from addressing the tough question: can you fight socialism without becoming authoritarian yourself? But this isn't just a geopolitical lecture—it's a personal story of survival, resistance, and hope. Gaby breaks down the lies Western progressives are buying into and challenges Americans to wake up before it's too late. Her story is a warning shot to every freedom-loving citizen: you don't know how good you have it—until it's gone. Stick around as Brian and Gaby explore how U.S. foreign policy has often enabled the very regimes we claim to oppose, and what can be done to break the cycle. If you care about liberty, truth, and the future of the Western Hemisphere, this is a conversation you can't afford to skip. ❤️ Order Cardio Miracle (CardioMiracle.com/TBNS) for 15% off and take a step towards better heart health and overall well-being!

At the Young Americans for Liberty conference in Washington, D.C., Matt Kibbe sits down with legendary journalist and educator John Stossel to talk about his long career bringing libertarianism to the masses. Stossel reflects on how the media landscape has changed, with decentralized platforms offering more opportunities to communicate without the fear of editorial censorship, and explains how his recent projects are bringing liberty into the classroom. He also laments the fact that for as long as he has been pointing out the benefits of free markets and personal liberty, many Americans are still not receptive to the ideas of freedom. Can Kibbe cheer him up with a dose of optimism? Watch to find out!
