25 kwietnia w Australii i Nowej Zelandii obchodzone jest narodowe święto - ANZAC Day. Dzień ten upamiętnia krwawą batalię pod Gallipoli podczas I wojny światowej. 25 kwietnia 1915 roku wojska Ententy rozpoczęły desant na półwysep Gallipoli nad cieśniną Dardanele. Uderzenie to miało otworzyć flocie aliantów drogę do Morza Czarnego, a w efekcie umożliwić zdobycie Konstantynopola i  wykluczenie imperium osmańskiego z wojny. Na drodze aliantów stanęła niespodziewanie silna i waleczna armia dowodzona przez Mustafę Kemala, którego dziś znamy jako Atatürka, twórcę nowoczesnego pastwa tureckiego. Bitwa zaplanowana jako błyskawiczna przekształciła się w ośmiomiesięczną batalię pozycyjną. Nie przyniosła państwom Ententy oczekiwanych rezultatów, natomiast pochłonęła wiele tysięcy ofiar po obu stronach. W bitwie pod Gallipoli swój chrzest bojowy przeszły połączone siły zbrojne Australii i Nowej Zelandii, z angielska zwane Australian and New Zealand Army Corps, czyli w skrócie właśnie ANZAC. Jednostka poniosła ciężkie straty, na półwyspie zginęło blisko 9 tysięcy Australijczyków i 3 tys. Nowozelandczyków. Informacje o bitwie o Gallipoli wywołały na Antypodach niezwykłe poruszenie, wkrótce ukształtowała się legenda ANZAC. Zmieniły postrzeganie przez Australijczyków i Nowozelandczyków historii i teraźniejszości. Legendzie ANZAC przypisuje się zbudowanie psychologicznej niezależności tych narodów, i otwarcie drogi do zbudowania niezależnych państw, choć będących częścią brytyjskiej wspólnoty. Na cześć bohaterstwa żołnierzy ANZAC, 25 kwietnia jest od 1916 roku obchodzony jako święto narodowe zwane właśnie ANZAC Day. W 1971 roku Eric Bogle, szkocki emigrant, poruszony trwającą w Wietnamie wojną napisał do niej swój muzyczny komentarz. Powstała piękna piosenka „And The Band  Played Waltzing Matilda”, w której autor sprzeciwia się romantycznemu spojrzeniu na wojnę, opisuje jej brutalność i opłakane konsekwencje dla uczestniczących w niej żołnierzy. Inspiracją był Wietnam ale autor opowieść swą osnuł na kanwie bitwy pod Gallipoli, która jest znacznie bliższa sercom Australijczyków niż wojna w Wietnamie. W 1974 Eric Bogle ze swoją piosenka wystąpił w Brisbane na National Folk Festiwal. Był zadowolony z występu, myślał że już wygrał główną nagrodę - Gitarę Ovation wartą 300 australijskich dolarów. Ku zaskoczeniu Erica, jego piosenka nie wygrała, zdobyła 3 nagrodę. Zaskoczona była również publiczność. Niedocenienie dzieła przez jury wywołało burzę protestów, dzięki której o piosence stało się głośno. Nieco później „Matyldę”, jak ją w skrócie nazywa sam autor, usłyszała Jane Herivel z Wysp Normandzkich.  Zaśpiewała ją na folkowym festiwalu w południowej Anglii. Tam usłyszała ją June Tabor i nagrała na swoim debiutanckim albumie. I tak Matylda ruszyła w świat. W ślad za swoją poprzedniczką. Żołnierze ANZAC do marszu najchętniej i najczęściej śpiewali piosenkę ”Waltzing Matilda” i rozpropagowali ją na cały świat. I dlatego gdy ERIC BOGLE w swojej piosence opowiada historię wojenną młodego chłopca, w refrenie w tle kapela gra zawsze Wędruj z Matyldą. Ostatni refren piosenki brzmi w wolnym przekładzie: A orkiestra gra Wędruj z Matyldą Weterani maszerują w szeregu Ale z roku na rok, z wolna odchodzą  w mrok Przyjdzie dzień,  że nie ujrzę żadnego   16 maja 2002 roku odszedł w mrok ostatni żyjący weteran spod Gallipoli 103 letni Alec Campbell. The time is fitting, then, to release Shadi Hamid's and Santiago Ramos' conversation with Abbas Milani, professor of political science and Iran Studies at Stanford University. Professor Milani is a world-renowned authority on Iran, having published Lost Wisdom: Rethinking Modernity in Iran and The Shah, a definitive biography of Mohamed Reza Pahvalvi, the last Shah of Iran, among many other books. He joined us this past December to discuss Iranian politics, secularism and the future.“A giant with a feet of clay, but with more staying power than some in the opposition think.” This is how Milani describes the state of the Iranian regime months before the war with Israel. The regime's “base of support is fragile … has no unity of purpose,” and yet, “ten, fifteen, twenty percent of the population is [still] willing to go along with it.” It teeters on the brink of collapse while some international players, including Russia and China, “more or less” support it. Unfortunately, the regime faces no “cohesive opposition.”Milani explores the future possibilities for Iran. Iranians want a secular democracy, he argues, and an “Islamic democracy” is not possible, he says, because “democracy is acceptance of ambiguity in the human condition.” Santiago and Shadi push back on this point. Santiago points to figures like Harriet Tubman and Martin Luther King, Jr., who embraced both religion and democracy, while Shadi argues for the role that reason plays in Islam. Milani counters that there can be an Iranian modernity — if not an Islamic democracy — and that a future Iran need not follow “the path of Atatürk.”Our bonus section for paid subscribers will be useful to future historians of the Iranian revolution. Santiago asks Milani, “When did you stop being a Stalinist?” Milani discusses his ideological evolution. Milani talks about his year in prison — 1977 — where he shared the same cell block as many of the current leaders of the Islamic Republic. A century after Kemal Atatürk galvanized the Turkish people and founded modern Turkey on the ashes of the Ottoman Empire -- and upon new principles of secularism, populism, and republicanism -- the current president is turning Turkey into an autocracy. Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, 71, has been in power for 22 years and is acting like he wants to rule for the rest of his life. He is jailing political opponents and critical journalists while stuffing the judiciary with friendly judges. In this episode, the Middle East Institute's Gönül Tol delves into Erdoğan's push for complete power while reflecting on the enduring -- and now endangered -- principles of Kemalism. John is joined by Ben Lee, Chief Legal Officer of Reddit.  They discuss Ben's extensive career as a senior in-house lawyer in several of the most successful tech companies in the world.  After earning degrees in physics and economics, Ben worked at IBM's research lab, where he was intrigued by the way lawyers grappled with the impacts of technology on society.  Ben then went to law school and began his career as a litigator at a New York law firm but left to work at the Legal Aid Society.  Financial realities eventually led him back to private practice and then to a career in-house.  At AT&T and NEC, Ben worked closely with pioneering computer scientists and handled complex IP matters involving emerging technologies like machine learning and AI.  When he moved to Google, Ben advised on major projects like Chrome, Android, and Google Cloud at very early stages when their success was far from assured.  Ben later joined Twitter during its early, fast-paced growth phase, managing litigation, IP, employment, and regulatory issues.  He led Twitter's lawsuit against the U.S. government over transparency for national security requests.  Later, at Airbnb, Ben tackled challenging regulatory landscapes worldwide, and at Plaid, he advocated for consumers' rights to financial data.  At Reddit, Ben now oversees all legal functions for a vast online platform with over 100,000 user-created and moderated communities.  Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act is vital to Reddit's success.  It provides that online users and platforms are generally not liable for content created by others.  Section 230 protects Reddit's content moderation decisions, the decisions of its volunteer community moderators and its individual users.  Finally, Ben advises young in-house lawyers to remember that their job is not to just point out all potential legal risks in a project, but to help their teams manage those risks so they can build great products and move companies forward.Podcast Link: Law-disrupted.fmHost: John B.
