Today we look into your race day logistics. Things to think about beforehand so they are not taking up space in your brain on race day. We get into realistic race goals and how to give yourself the best chance for a good race. We talk about how to deal with brick legs off the bike. Is it something you can train more for or is it something you have to get used to. We dive into transition preparation and time saving techniques, some which are guaranteed to save you several minutes if you're not already doing them. And we look at having to go to the bathroom during the race. I know, but it is definitely another area that can cost you a ton of time. We also discuss the recent Barkley Marathons and here's a link to the mini-documentary we referenced..  Barkley Marathons mini-doc. - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eXi4xHj4SfU&t=19s Come join us at one of our awesome Camps: Nashville, May 13-17 - https://runsignup.com/Race/TN/Nashville/2026Camp Madison, Wisconsin, July 30-Aug 2 - https://c26triathlon.com/camps/triathlon-camp-wisconsin-2026/ Topics: What is a realistic goal time for a first-time Ironman, and how should I pace each leg Shoot for a wide window… it's like a long putt… trying to make it when you don't need to is risky business….. In this episode, Max King reflects on his experience at the Barkley Marathons and why he now views it as a multi-year project rather than a one-off attempt. He breaks down the realities of navigation, collaboration, foot care, cold exposure, and the mental calculus required to decide whether to continue deeper into the course. In the second half of the conversation, Max discusses where he sits in his career at 45, how his relationship with competition has evolved, and what it means to keep racing while letting go of certain expectations. He talks about durability, motivation, adapting training as an aging athlete, shifting sponsorship dynamics, and the balance between performance and adventure.Partners:Precision Fuel and Hydration - use code SINGLETRACK at checkout for 15% off your next order (https://www.precisionhydration.com/planner/?utm_source=partner&utm_medium=podcast&utm_campaign=singletrack)Norda - check out the 005: the lightest, fastest, most stable trail racing shoe ever made (https://nordarun.com/)Raide - Making equipment for efficient human-powered movement in the mountains (https://raideresearch.com/singletrack)Janji - premium trail running apparel (https://janji.com/pages/singletrack)Momentous - use code SINGLETRACK for up to 35% off your first order (https://livemomentous.com/) Support the show

The conch shell blew at 5 a.m. and the 2026 Barkley Marathons began, this time in the anti clockwise direction and on Valentine's Day.In this episode, I break down my full loop at Barkley, from the chaotic descent off Chimney Top to the long climb up Rat Jaw, the prison tunnel, Little Hell, navigation errors, and the final push back to camp just under 14 hours.I also share some of the lesser known history of the race, including how the Barkley nearly disappeared in 2006 before a Tennessee Senate resolution preserved it at Frozen Head State Park. A race born as a joke about a failed prison escape has become one of the most respected endurance tests in the world. This was a strong field. The weather was ideal. The direction was reversed. And for me, it ended with a fall, a hairline rib fracture, and a hard earned lesson.Barkley is never just about finishing. It is about small navigation wins, brutal climbs through thick leaves, and seeing how close you can get to your edge. And this year, it was also about spending Valentine's Day collecting book pages with Allison.Sixteen books. Fourteen hours. One broken rib.The price we pay for love.Support our Sponsors: Sawyer: https://sawyerdirect.net/Janji (code: Freeoutside): https://snp.link/a0bfb726CS Coffee: CSinstant.coffeeGarage Grown Gear: https://snp.link/db1ba8abSubscribe to Substack: http://freeoutside.substack.comSupport this content on patreon: HTTP://patreon.com/freeoutsideBuy my book "Free Outside" on Amazon: https://amzn.to/39LpoSFEmail me to buy a signed copy of my book, "Free Outside" at jeff@freeoutside.comWatch the movie about setting the record on the Colorado Trail: https://tubitv.com/movies/100019916/free-outsideWebsite: www.Freeoutside.comInstagram: thefreeoutsidefacebook: www.facebook.com/freeoutside#Trailrunning #Runningnews #Outdoors #Outdooradventure

We recorded this one on the drive home from Frozen Head State Park to Bozeman, while the mud is still on the shoes and the bruises are still fresh. Allison finally gets to talk about the last three months of secret training, the stress of learning map and compass, and what it is like to go from “I might get lost” to “I just found every book” in the same day.Find Allison's Substack: https://allisonhardingpowell.substack.com/We walk through the whole loop from the 6 a.m. start, the chaos at the first book, the long climb up Rat Jaw, and the moment it became clear the time cutoff was slipping away. Then it turns into something better than a time goal, a full team effort with the “Overtime Eight,” eight runners from around the world who worked together, found every page, and finished the loop together, hands on the gate.If you are curious about Barkley, this is a first-timer perspective on what matters most: why you want it, how to balance vert and navigation, how hard the book hunting really is, and why accessible calories can be the difference between moving and melting.Chapters00:00 Introduction and Journey Overview12:02 Balancing Work and Training17:20 Race Day Experience and Strategy28:34 Climbing Ratt Jaw and Race Reflections34:41 Navigating Challenges on the Course46:45 The Power of Group Dynamics54:03 Preparing for the UnexpectedSupport our Sponsors: Sawyer: https://sawyerdirect.net/Janji (code: Freeoutside): https://snp.link/a0bfb726CS Coffee: CSinstant.coffeeGarage Grown Gear: https://snp.link/db1ba8abSubscribe to Substack: http://freeoutside.substack.comSupport this content on patreon: HTTP://patreon.com/freeoutsideBuy my book "Free Outside" on Amazon: https://amzn.to/39LpoSFEmail me to buy a signed copy of my book, "Free Outside" at jeff@freeoutside.comWatch the movie about setting the record on the Colorado Trail: https://tubitv.com/movies/100019916/free-outsideWebsite: www.Freeoutside.comInstagram: thefreeoutsidefacebook: www.facebook.com/freeoutside#Trailrunning #Runningnews #Outdoors #Outdooradventure

That morning I headed out for my Three Triangles run, planning easy hill repeats with a steady climb that grew progressively steeper before each downhill. I moved through Mount Douglas Park, tracking my pace and heart rate while greeting dog walkers and pausing occasionally for photos of my favourite trees. The second climb averaged about eight percent, pushing me into higher zones than usual, though I tried to stay controlled and focused on steady effort. As I ran, I reflected on my podcast episode, my training philosophy of longevity over extremes, and even shared a few thoughts about the Barkley Marathons. Near the end, about fifty-five minutes in, I recorded my Wednesday trailer on the power line trail and signed off until Sunday.

This week, we start with a quick trip into the wilderness where common sense goes to die: the Barkley Marathons went down again, and the course reminded everyone who's boss. Then we bring it back home for a race review of the Sweetheart Run 10K in Overland Park, Kansas, complete with the moments that felt smooth, the parts that bit back, and what the day taught us going forward. From there, we head straight into the pre-Tokyo nerves that a lot of us are feeling right now. If you've heard whispers about Tokyo's cutoff mats and thought, “Wait… cutoffs along the course?” we break it all down in plain English. We talk through why Tokyo's timing system feels different, how starting later can change the math, and what matters most when the clock is doing the chasing. We also share the mindset shift that turns the mats from scary to manageable, especially for back-of-the-pack runners who want to finish strong and stay calm. No panic, no doom, just a clear plan and a little confidence. If Tokyo is on the calendar or if we've ever worried about being “too close” to a cutoff, this episode is for us. Lace up, settle in, and let's run the numbers without letting them run us.

In 1988, before the 100-mile version existed, before the conch shell start became legend, before the documentaries and global fame, one man proved the Barkley Marathons could be finished.Frozen Ed was the first person to ever finish the Barkley. Not the 100-miler. The original three-loop race that no one thought was possible. In this episode we talk about:– What Barkley was really like in the 80s– The story of Tom Possert and the missed summit– How the book pages became part of the race– When the 100-mile version was born– The Soviet invasion year– The prison apprehension story– How the course has evolved and gotten harder– Why Laz says he's not trying to make it the toughest race in the world– The real energy cost of Barkley– And why endurance athletes need to protect their heartsThis is a history lesson, a philosophy lesson, and a reminder that Barkley has always lived at the limit of what's possible. If you love the mystique of Barkley, this is required listening.Support our Sponsors: Sawyer: https://sawyerdirect.net/Janji (code: Freeoutside): https://snp.link/a0bfb726CS Coffee: CSinstant.coffeeGarage Grown Gear: https://snp.link/db1ba8abSubscribe to Substack: http://freeoutside.substack.comSupport this content on patreon: HTTP://patreon.com/freeoutsideBuy my book "Free Outside" on Amazon: https://amzn.to/39LpoSFEmail me to buy a signed copy of my book, "Free Outside" at jeff@freeoutside.comWatch the movie about setting the record on the Colorado Trail: https://tubitv.com/movies/100019916/free-outsideWebsite: www.Freeoutside.comInstagram: thefreeoutsidefacebook: www.facebook.com/freeoutside#Trailrunning #Runningnews #Outdoors #Outdooradventure

The Barkley Marathons is designed to sit right on the edge of possible. Sixty hours. Five loops. Nearly all off trail. No GPS. No course markings. Books hidden in the woods. A cigarette lights the start. In 2021, I stepped onto the course and heard Taps play when my race ended. In 2026, I'm lining up again. In this episode, I break down what Barkley actually is, how it started under at Brushy Mountain, why it keeps getting harder, and what makes it different from every other 100 miler on the planet. We talk navigation, the fun run, the infamous virgin sacrifice, the conch shell, the secretive entry process, and why even legends like John Kelly can get stopped at three loops. But more than that, this is about why anyone would go back.Barkley is not about speed. It is not about splits. It is about finding your limit in a world where almost nothing forces you to.And in 2026, I'm going to try again.Chapters00:00 The Origins of the Barkley Marathons02:51 The Challenge and Difficulty of the Race05:47 The Unique Entry Process and Race Structure08:50 Navigating the Course: Skills and Strategies12:09 Mental Toughness and the Experience of Running15:04 The Community and Culture of the Barkley Marathons18:11 Inspiration and the Future of the Barkley MarathonsSupport our Sponsors: Sawyer: https://sawyerdirect.net/Janji (code: Freeoutside): https://snp.link/a0bfb726CS Coffee: CSinstant.coffeeGarage Grown Gear: https://snp.link/db1ba8abSubscribe to Substack: http://freeoutside.substack.comSupport this content on patreon: HTTP://patreon.com/freeoutsideBuy my book "Free Outside" on Amazon: https://amzn.to/39LpoSFEmail me to buy a signed copy of my book, "Free Outside" at jeff@freeoutside.comWatch the movie about setting the record on the Colorado Trail: https://tubitv.com/movies/100019916/free-outsideWebsite: www.Freeoutside.comInstagram: thefreeoutsidefacebook: www.facebook.com/freeoutside#Trailrunning #Runningnews #Outdoors #Outdooradventure

Send us a textI'm really excited to bring you this episode's guest. When I began ultramarathoning several decades ago, the only way I could learn about races and people in that space was through a black-and-white magazine delivered to my mailbox called Ultrarunning. It had pages and pages of mundane rows of race results that still held fascination for me. Plus stories about races in exotic-sounding places like Auburn, Calif. and where I first heard about this crazy race called the Barkley Marathons that at that time no one had ever finished, and long before Netflix, no one else but me and a few others had heard of. I also read about people who became my first idols in the sport like Marshall Ulrich and Roy Pirrung, who I've had the great honor to chat with both on this podcast and in-person. But one who absolutely left me in awe who I never got to meet was Ann Trason, who I got to see – briefly – when she zoomed past me on Hope Pass in the Leadville Trail 100 in the 90s. Ann won the Western States 100 a mind-boggling 14 times, twice less than two weeks after winning the Comrades Marathon in South Africa. Western States is considered the most prestigious 100-miler in the US, and Ann, who in 1994 set a course record of 17:37:51, now lives close to the 99-mile mark of the course. Comrades is the oldest ultramarathon in the world, having begun right after WW1, and is roughly 55 miles, and is so esteemed that the entire country basically shuts down to watch it. Very few Americans have ever won it. Ann set the Leadville course record of 18:06:24 in 1994 that was only broken this past year by Anne Flower. She finished second, not just among women, but overall. In 1996, she not only completed the Grand Slam of 100-milers – Western States, Leadville, Vermont, and Wasatch Front – but she won them all. Ann set 20 world records, including for 50 miles in 5:40:18 and 100K in 7:00:47. All the way back in 1987, Ann became a Nike-sponsored athlete when women's sports hadn't taken hold like they have today, and ultramarathoning hadn't achieved any of the attention and popularity it now has. Ann retired from ultramarathoning in the 2000s due to injuries and the onset of rheumatoid arthritis, which has ravaged her body. As a result of her many accomplishments, as well as her continuing contributions to the sport as a race director, coach, writer, supporter, and much more, she was inducted into the Ultrarunning Hall of Fame in 2020. After a long time out of the spotlight, Ann arrived at an Arizona race called Across the Years, which begins three days before New Year's and finishes three days after it, just wanting to engage with the ultrarunning community in her joyous way, and push her walker – with all of its lights and decorations – for some laps around the 1.41-mile looped course. I have spoken with several people who told me how delighted they were to get to chat with Ann out there, and in the end, one of the event's highlights was when she completed 100 miles and earned a buckle – all while pushing that walker. With such a long, colorful career, you can imagine that Ann and I cover a lot of ground in this very fun chat, including her talking with Nelson Mandela after she won Comrades, swapping hats with the Jester, the Grateful Dead, being vegetarian and a race director, including the best way to make peanut butter and jelly sandwiches at races, long-lost Nike shoe models, the fun of reading that old Ultrarunning magazine, her inspirations in the sport and those who have followed her, her relationship with her parents, and about the joy and gratitude she has for life and the running community.Ann TrasonInstagram @ann_trasonBill Stahlsilly_billy@msn.comFacebook Bill StahlInstagram and Threads @stahlor and @we_are_superman_podcastYouTube We Are Superman PodcastSubscribe to the We Are Superman

Jasmin Paris entered the wider public consciousness when she became the first woman to finish the Barkley Marathons, with just 99 seconds to spare. Ironically, for a race that eschewed publicity for so long, the photos of her sprinting the final 100 metres to the yellow gate are now arguably more famous than the Barkley itself. Whilst this may be Jasmin's best-known achievement, it's far from her only one. Spine winner, Bob Graham Round holder, fell running champion, senior lecturer in veterinary science, Mother and partner. Jasmin's life is full. Ali and Matt spoke to Jasmin about all this, and Green Runners, the organisation she co-founded with Damian Hall to advocate for and address climate issues related to the sport of running and the wider world. Damian Hall is an ultrarunner, coach and writer who has held records on many of the UK's long distance challenges including the Pennine Way, Paddy Buckley Round, Cape Wrath Trail and Wainwrights Coast to Coast. He has placed 5th in UTMB (2018), 4th in Tor des Geants (2023), and has won the Spine Race. He has competed in the infamous Barkley Marathons ultra twice.Damian is also a founder of The Green Runners which is a global community of over 3000 runners who aim to highlight and take action on the climate and ecological crisis. Their 4 Pillars consider How We Move (travel), How We Kit-up, How We Fuel (diet), and How We Speak Out (activism). Damian talks us through the formation of The Green Runners, as well as talking about campaigns and activism, such as action taken against sportswashing. One of Damian's books is 'We Can't Run Away From This' which examines running's carbon footprint and ways to improve on this. In September 2025 and on the back of his Lakeland 100 win, Damian set out in suboptimal weather for his Three Solo Challenge where he attempted to run the UK Big Three rounds (Charlie Ramsay, Bob Graham and Paddy Buckley rounds) linked together by public transport. The Big Three had previously been linked together by car by Mark Hartley (1990) and then by bike by John Kelly (2020) in his Grand Round. Damian's round would add the vagaries of Britain's public transport system into the mix. We talk logistics and sleep deprivation, deteriorating weather, and about how he made the eventual decision to bail due to worsening conditions on the final half of the Paddy Buckley round in Snowdonia. What kind of person dreams up the hardest race on earth, and then follows it up with one of the weirdest? This week on The Trailhead, Zoë and Brendan dive deep into the mind of Lazarus Lake, the man behind both the Barkley Marathons and Big's Backyard Ultra. Our guest, author Jared Beasley, joins to talk about his new book on Laz, unpacking the mystery, mischief, and mythology that made one man's backyard into a global endurance phenomenon. We explore what drives people to suffer on purpose, why Laz's races capture our collective imagination, and what they say about the culture of ultrarunning itself.

Host Scotty Sandow sits down with UltraRunning Magazine columnist Jared Beasley, an author and journalist who never expected to find himself embedded in the sport of ultrarunning and just wrote a new book called The Endurance Artist. The book offers an all-access pass to some of the world's most grueling races — and to the mastermind behind them: Gary Cantrell, better known as Lazarus Lake. The Barkley Marathons is legendary — a secretive, punishing event with book checkpoints hidden in the woods, and an elevation gain equivalent to climbing Mount Everest twice. And then there's Big's Backyard, where runners tackle a 4-mile loop every hour, on the hour, until only one runner remains.  In The Endurance Artist, Jared uncovers the world of a reclusive figure (Laz) determined to rewrite the rules — challenging our ideas about success, failure and human potential. The Endurance Artist is available now at bookstores everywhere. Watch this episode on Youtube Subscribe to UltraRunning Magazine to read more of Jared's work Thanks to our episode sponsor, Drymax

For our 200th episode, I'm honored to welcome two legends of the endurance world: Lazarus Lake, the mastermind behind the Barkley Marathons and Big's Backyard Ultra and author Jared Beasley, whose new book The Endurance Artist dives deep into Laz's life and legacy. We talk about what it really means to chase the impossible, how pain and discomfort shape us, and why the “Danny's” of the sport (everyday athletes who rise beyond expectation) are so inspiring. Laz shares lessons from a lifetime of running, coaching, and creating races that break people down and build them back up, while Jared gives us a writer's view into the grit, humor, and heart of these iconic events. From dogs as life coaches to the team dynamics hidden in solo suffering, this conversation is a raw and memorable celebration of endurance, resilience, and living life to its fullesthttps://8020books.com/product/the-endurance-artist/Life Coaching with Travis MacyAre you a middle-aged man looking for a wise and powerful teammate to support your expansive journey in work, family, athletics, and life? Most recently John was ahead of record pace 1900 miles into an Appalachian Trail FKT attempt when his attempt ended in the Whites due to injury. Both special guest host (and White Mountains Legend) Bill Tidd and I (Will) were with him that weekend when it all went down. Title: The Perseverance of The SaintsSpeaker: Rob BerrethScripture: Hebrews 10:32-39Episode Overview:In this sermon from Hebrews 10:32–39, we are reminded that the Christian life is both wonderful and hard—and that perseverance is essential. Using vivid illustrations like the grueling Barkley Marathons, the message calls us to look back at God's past faithfulness, look forward to the eternal reward, and keep looking to Christ in the present. Endurance isn't about white-knuckled effort, but about remembering who we are in Christ, where we're headed, and the One who sustains us along the way.Key Highlights:• Look Back Often (vv. 32–35): Remembering the early days of faith stirs passion and courage to endure trials. Hardship in obedience always brings joy, never regret.• Look Forward Always (vv. 36–39): The Christian life is a long-distance race with eternal reward—Christ Himself and life with Him forever.• The Need for Endurance: Perseverance is fueled by faith, the promise of God's Word, and the encouragement of fellow believers.• The Great Reward: We endure because Jesus is worth it. He is our better possession, our abiding joy, and our coming King.Call to Action:Take time this week to reflect on both where God has carried you and what He has promised ahead. When life feels heavy, remind yourself of the moments He has strengthened you in the past—and let that fuel fresh faith for today. Fix your eyes on Jesus, trusting that He will bring you to the finish line.Redeemer Church211 Northshore Dr. Bellingham, WA 98226www.redeemernw.org
