Mark Sanders has been there and done that. From the '60 to his current output, Sanders has never given up on songs, creation, and finding the right tones to formulate excellent songs. Some of his first big stage tastes were opening for Ramblin Jack Elliot and The Blues Magoos after winning Battle of the bands at Daniels Den in Saginaw while in The Next Exit Blues Band. That band was coming out of another he was in, The Rogues, where he shared the stage with other luminaries of the time, including The Bossmen, ? and The Mysterians, Shadows Of Night, and ultimately a unique gig with The Animals.     From the clubs and main stages, rock, folk, and country eras, Mark is now retired from live shows, but was last playing with his wife Suzanne on keyboards & vocals in the Mark Sanders Band. Mark has four albums, he's back into blues and getting world-wide play, most recently a feature in Australia. This is a very intriguing ride and features a new song of his, 'On A Night Like That.'

Hey Guys! Once again, I apologize for not releasing an episode this last week and a half. it is getting harder & harder for me to do this podcast with everything I have going on in my life right now. between school & music production & songwriting & at home responsibilities. but I do appreciate the fact that my regular listener numbers are starting to come back so that makes me happy that me not releasing an episode on one particular week doesn't effect my listenership at all. but as always, things have been incredibly eventful for me lately. so there is a lot of catching up to do on my end with you guys, and I don't think there is enough character space in this text description for this episode to fill you in with everything that has been going on with me lately. so I think I'll save some of it for next week. one thing I'll tell you is that I actually got to see Rock & Roll History for myself in person recently. I will catch you up on that next week. here's the link to last song just in case you didn't listen to it or forgot about it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XKYgtwsqnxs don't forget to also follow me & reach out to me on Instagram & Tik Tok right here: https://www.instagram.com/iheartoldies/ https://www.tiktok.com/@iheartoldies also please do sign up for the premium subscription version of my podcast. would appreciate it if you guys could do that because then you'll hear all of my latest & upcoming podcast interviews. including one with an original member of a band called the Blues Magoos. here's the link to that just in case you want to listen to it: https://themillennialthrowbackmachine.supercast.com/ don't forget to also follow me on Spotify so that way you guys can hear my next song when it comes out the following week. I'm really excited to release this song. I feel like it's one of my best songs yet, it's really powerful & it has a great message. here's the link to where you'll be able to stream it. this is the link to my last single, but through it, you'll be able to find my artist profile to get to my next song: https://distrokid.com/hyperfollow/samlwilliams/possibility also, please do check out the Spotify & Youtube Playlists for this podcast. here you'll be able to find all of the songs I have talked about on my show so far including some of the ones that I have mentioned in interview episodes of this podcast (the old ones at least) definitely send me any suggestions for songs I should talk about next on my podcast that I haven't yet at samltwilli@icloud.com: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/21f3uBS6kU4hUF6QAC5JMj?si=42ccfdd98e8b4f56 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CS1sYR7xky8&list=PL66sgq_GAmRcXy8yKZJfVmAD14HUYj7Nf please do also check out the Official Redbubble Merch store for this podcast. here you'll be able to find all of the super cool merch items that are specific to this podcast. "GERMINATING IN THE SOIL"THE WEB OF SOUND by The Seeds (GNP Crescendo, 1966)1966 was probably the high water mark year for Garage Rock: There was Gloria by Shadows of Knight; Psychotic Reaction by Count V; Talk Talk by the Music Machine; We Ain't Got Nothin' Yet by The Blues Magoos, and the Eldorado of the genre: 96 Tears by ? And the Mysterians - just imagine all that Fuzz -Farfisa ripeness! Even yours truly at age 13 had his band The Full House covering all those tunes at the Princeton Hospital Fete that summer. But the undisputed King of Garage Rock was Sky Saxon of The Seeds (one of the house bands at Bido Lito's in Hollywood - also home of Love), and this recording The Web of Sound has all the elements of what one critic called “snotty aggression with some heavier psychedelic flourishes” that made garage rock the indelible statement that it was. The 14 minute “Up in her Room” , with its penetrating bottleneck guitar work by Cooker, has been compared to The Velvet Underground's “Sister Ray”, and the influence of The Seeds, like their east coast counterparts, the Velvets, was enormous. Iggy Pop, Alice Cooper and many other credit Sky and his band to be their inspirations.Sky, born Richard Elven Marsh to a Mormon family in 1937, had traveled a long distance spiritually when he joined the Yahowha vegetarian cult following Father Yod, taking the additional name of “Sunlight.” Enroute, he masterminded some of the most infectiously growling proto- punk ever, and on this set he leads us through its many mansions with slimy yet sinuous renditions of Tripmaker, Farmer John, and Rolling Machine.Interesting note: this cartridge is not an 8, but a 4 track - the format that preceded the 8. There were two bands that made a significant commercial breakthrough in the late 1960's, one from the west coast and the other from the east coast. Iron Butterfly came from the Los Angeles area and quickly ascended to success with their second album, "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida". The album was the most successful in Atlantic Records history (pre-Led Zeppelin). The band became an influence on up-and-coming hard rock/heavy metal groups. The Blues Magoos came from The Bronx in New York. Their sound was gritty and also melodic and very psychedelic-induced. They had a Top 10 hit that gave them national exposure and they have been featured prominently in many garage rock compilations. They became an influence on Garage rock, Indie and New Wave bands in successive years. These are two bands that made an immediate impact on the nation's consciousness.Feel free to make a donation to the show through PayPal at  sonictyme@yahoo.com If you would, please make a donation of love and hope to St. Jude Children's HospitalMake an impact on the lives of St. Jude kids - St. Jude Children's Research Hospital (stjude.org)Also Other Items of Interest:Kathy Bushnell Website for Emily Muff bandHome | Kathy Bushnell | Em & MooListen to previous shows at the main webpage at:https://www.buzzsprout.com/1329053Pamela Des Barres Home page for books, autographs, clothing and online writing classes.Pamela Des Barres | The Official Website of the Legendary Groupie and Author (pameladesbarresofficial.com)Listen to more music by Laurie Larson at:Home | Shashké Music and Art (laurielarson.net)View the most amazing paintings by Marijke Koger-Dunham (Formally of the 1960's artists collective, "The Fool").Psychedelic, Visionary and Fantasy Art by Marijke Koger (marijkekogerart.com)For unique Candles have a look at Stardust Lady's Etsy shopWhere art and armor become one where gods are by TwistedByStardust (etsy.com)For your astrological chart reading, contact Astrologer Tisch Aitken at:https://www.facebook.com/AstrologerTisch/Tarot card readings by Kalinda available atThe Mythical Muse | FacebookEmma Bonner-Morgan Facebook music pageThe Music Of Emma Bonner-Morgan | FacebookFor booking Children's parties and character parties in the Los Angeles area contact Kalinda Gray at:https://www.facebook.com/wishingwellparties/I'm listed in Feedspot's "Top 10 Psychedelic Podcasts You Must Follow". https://blog.feedspot.com/psychedelic_podcasts/

What the Riff?!?

This second studio album from The Monkees was number 1 on the Billboard 200 for 18 weeks, displacing their debut album to get there.  More of the Monkees has been certified quintuple platinum, was the first pop/rock album to be the best selling album of the year in the U.S. – and the third best-selling album of the 60's.It is also the one that Monkee Michael Nesmith said was “probably the worst album in the history of the world."The Monkees were originally Micky Dolenz, Michael Nesmith, Peter Tork, and Davy Jones.  The group was conceived for the TV series “The Monkees” which aired from 1966 to 1968, and the band members primarily contributed lead vocals and only limited roles in the studio, as they were expected to spend their time filming the television series.  Michael Nesmith composed and produced some songs, and Peter Tork did some guitar work, but it was mainly session musicians.  The Candy Store Prophets were the studio band for the first album, and other session musicians including The Wrecking Crew were involved in the second album. Bob Rafelson and Bert Schneider had the idea for the show.  They interviewed musicians for the job, first recruiting Davy Jones, who had been working in Broadway.  The instruments played were driven by what looked good on camera rather than what they actually played.  Davy Jones was the only one with experience playing drums, but he was considered too short so Dolenz was assigned to the drums.  Nesmith was on guitar, Tork on bass, and Jones was the front man.  The more natural lineup for concerts would be Jones on drums, Tork on guitar, Nesmith on bass and Donlenz as front man.The show was a hit, but the music was a bigger hit, with album sales outstripping Nielsen ratings.  That pushed the producers to pay more attention to the music.  It also encouraged the studio to send the Monkees out to play live concerts.  These guys were recording the TV show by day, recording songs by night, and doing special appearances on the weekend, then they had to figure out how to rehearse for live performances.  It was all very confusing for the “band,” with Nesmith shocked to see the first album presenting them as an actual band.  That was October 1966.  But the second album was released while they were on tour as a real band in January of 1967.  They hadn't selected the songs, and it went out without their permission or knowledge.  They weren't even given a copy, but had to buy it in a record store.  The album cover was a picture of the band originally taken for a JC Penny commercial.  This would eventually lead to the band being able to take creative control, and Don Kirshner being dismissed.  Despite the controversy, this is quite a good album, and quite representative of the music at the time. (I'm Not Your) Steppin' StoneThis track was written by Tommy Boyce and Bobby Hart, and Micky Dolenz is on lead.  Paul Revere & the Raiders originally recorded it, but the Monkees' version is the best known.  It was also the first song from the Monkees' to chart as a B-side.Mary, MaryAlso featuring Micky Dolenz on lead, this track was written by Michael Nesmith.  It was originally recorded by The Butterfield Blues Band in 1966, and in the summer of the same year Nesmith produced and recorded the song for The Monkees with Dolenz on lead and the Wrecking Crew on backing instruments.  It was never released as a single in the U.S., but was given away as a cut-out cereal box prize in 1969.When Love Comes Knockin' (At Your Door)Davy Jones takes lead duties here, and the song was written by Carole Bayer Sager and Neil Sedaka. I'm A BelieverThis is the big hit from the album.  Micky Dolenz returns to lead, and the song was written by Neil Diamond.  It hit number 1 for the week ending December 31st, 1966, and would be the biggest selling single for all of 1967.  It went gold within two days of its release because of advance orders.   ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Main theme from the television series The Green Hornet)This was the last month for a short-lived series was famous for co-starring Bruce Lee as Kato.  It also had a crossover with the Batman TV series. STAFF PICKS:Happenings Ten Years Time Ago by the YardbirdsBrian's brings us the psychedelic sensibilities of the Yardbirds.  The singer is looking back on the time from a perspective of reincarnation.  This song has participation from both Jeff Beck and Jimmy Page.  John Paul Jones also contributed the bass lines for this one.   Look What You've Done by Pozo-Seco SingersRob features a folk-oriented piece from Don Williams before his solo career.  Williams would go on to have 17 number one country hits.  His hits would be covered by everyone from Eric Clapton to Pete Townshend...to Telly Savalas.(We Ain't Got) Nothin' Yet by The Blues MagoosWayne's staff pick returns to the psychedelic genre.  This is the best known song for The Blues Magoos.  While not very successful commercially as a band, the Blues Magoos was a big influence on many bands including Pink Floyd.Good Vibrations by The Beach BoysBruce brings us the high water mark song of The Beach Boys' discography.  Good Vibrations was the costliest single ever recorded.  Brian Wilson recorded a bunch of short musical modules with his bandmates and with session musicians at four different Hollywood studios.  He had more than 90 hours of tape to make this 3.5-minute single.  Wilson's mother was the inspiration for this song. COMEDY TRACK:Snoopy vs. The Red Baron by The Royal GuardsmenA novelty song inspired by the comic serial "Peanuts," in which Snoopy often daydreams of fighting the Red Baron in his doghouse - re-envisioned as a Sopwith Camel.

AM Radio was a crucial media outlet for Artists to gain exposure and commercial success. 45 rpm. singles were very important to attract attention to an Artist's album or film. Then in the late 60's FM radio was coming to prominence and albums were becoming more important to listeners. AM radio remained important but after The Beatles success American bands stepped up their game and started to release more interesting sounding singles. This was a transitional period in music were Pop would became Rock and the mid to late sixties became a Golden period for Pop music. Also:Listen to previous shows at the main webpage at:https://www.buzzsprout.com/1329053View the most amazing paintings by Marijke Koger-Dunham (Formally of the 1960's artists collective, "The Fool").Psychedelic, Visionary and Fantasy Art by Marijke Koger (marijkekogerart.com)For unique Candles have a look at Stardust Lady's Etsy shopWhere art and armor become one where gods are by TwistedByStardust (etsy.com)View and purchase wonderful art by Patricia Rodriguez at:patriciarodriguez (tigerbeearts.com)Tarot card readings by Kalinda available atThe Mythical Muse | FacebookI'm listed in Feedspot's "Top 10 Psychedelic Podcasts You Must Follow". https://blog.feedspot.com/psychedelic_podcasts/

My guest today is Geoff Daking who grew up playing in local bands before attending American University which he ultimately left to join the NY based Mercury artist Blues Magoos to play the drums in 1966 (I was born in 1967).  Between ‘66 and '69, they recorded four albums, two of which were platinum, and a top-five single, “We Ain't Got Nothin' Yet”. The peak of their career was in 1967 when they toured four months with Herman's Hermits and The Who (the Hermits were the headliners). During that time he became fascinated with recording and engineered some of the Magoos last albums. In the summer of 1969, Geoff went back to Woodstock where he played in bands with Tim Harden, Dave Sanborn, Paul Butterfield and Buzzy Feiton.  In 1970, Geoff became a staff engineer at Sound Ideas in NYC, then SoundMixers NYC, and later as an independent engineer. And In 1982. he opened his own studio, Nimbus Nine, which grew to four rooms, one API, one Neve, one Trident, and one ProTools. Since 1970, Geoff has designed and built more than 20 recording studios for music, film and commercial production. including the all analog “BIG Blue” in Katonah NY for the recording of Joan Osborne's premier album, “Relish” and Tuxedo Park for Cyndi Lauper's “Sisters of Avalon”. His most recent studio is the multi-million dollar music production facility in Saint Petersburg Florida, Big3 Entertainment. In 1993 Geoff started manufacturing his own line of audio equipment. The first product was a combination mic-pre/eq. This all-discrete Class “A” unit was based on the legendary Trident A Range circuits by Barry Porter. Next was the FET Compressor. In 2000, production began for full-size Class A recording consoles in frame sizes from 16 to 80 inputs.  Thanks so much to William Wittman for making our introduction! "Garage Rock" is a term that was first used in the Sixties to describe a raw rock sound along with an attitude of anger or disdain towards an antagonist in a song. The production value was very minimal and the results were an exciting and powerful sound. The term was later referenced as 'Punk Rock" or identified as "Nuggets", a term associated with the original Elektra Records compilation of 1960's underground and psychedelic rock. Garage Rock is still with us today despite some people playing music on a laptop on stage. People still want to hear the raw power of a band playing live and the excitement that comes from pure rock 'n roll. You're  financial contributions are welcomed in helping to keep the production going.Paypal account: sonictyme@yahoo.comAlso:Listen to previous shows at the main webpage at:https://www.buzzsprout.com/1329053View and purchase wonderful art by Patricia Rodriguez at:patriciarodriguez (tigerbeearts.com)View the most amazing paintings by Marijke Koger-Dunham (Formally of the 1960's artists collective, "The Fool").Psychedelic, Visionary and Fantasy Art by Marijke Koger (marijkekogerart.com)Tarot card readings by Kalinda available atThe Mythical Muse | FacebookFor your astrological chart reading, contact Astrologer Tisch Aitken at:https://www.facebook.com/AstrologerTisch/I'm listed in Feedspot's "Top 10 Psychedelic Podcasts You Must Follow". https://blog.feedspot.com/psychedelic_podcasts/

Phil Brown keeps the ball "Rollin' and tumblin" off his first record called Cruel Inventions from 2002...I dig Phil a lot....James Brown with "It's a new day [Let a man come in" from 1970 finishing out the last proper set of music for the evening..... We finish out the festivities with one of the great German bands of the last 50 years...CAN. "She brings the rain" is the b-side of their 2nd single and a great one at that...Earl Jean [McCrea] with the original recording of "I'm into something good" which was a big hit for Herman's Hermits....and taking us to the finish line is a really good Canadian band called Mother Earth...their cover of Soul Sacrifice is essential! That's if for this week.....so if the good lord's willin' and the creek don't rise we'll be back at the Purple Grotto with another DRR Show next week....stay smooooth…...

Ok......so it's not a new show but we'll be back next week....so stay tuned! Just to keep the vibe going I'm uploading a live show from one of my favorite bands of the 60's...The Move [I have many but Roy Wood and his band of Brummies won out this time]. I love the SHAZAM period of The Move and this live show encapsulates some of the songs from it while paying homage to Todd Rundgren's genius. The show opens with Rundgrens' early band The Nazz's "Open My Eyes"....what a great cut! Brilliant!....they slow it down with a heavy version of Brill Building Soundsmiths, Barry Mann & Cynthia Weil's "Don't Make My Baby Blue". Some light humor with "Cherry Blossom Clinic" puts you on the analyst's couch for "The Last Thing On My Mind" which was written by folk staple Tom Paxton. "I Can Hear The Grass Grow" is one of the greatest singles ever....the only other version that comes close is The Blues Magoos version! Lightening the mood is a version of Ars Nova's "Fields of People"....a really good song no matter who does it. "Goin' Back" was written by Gerry Goffin & Carol King and The Move do it justice....I think the first version of this was done by Goldie & The Gingerbreads but that needs some fact checking for sure...and hey!.....Freddy Mercury recorded a version of this under the name of LARRY LUREX in 1973 with Roger Taylor & Brian May......back to SHAZAM with "Hello Suzie"....which is just about everyone's favorite...and they end the show with another NAZZ song "Under The Ice" from NAZZ II... Well I hope you forgive me for not laying down any vocal tracks and I hope you enjoy this live show!

FEATURE: HOURGLASS - Power of Love from JUNE 1968 Hour Glass was a band based in Los Angeles, California in 1967 and 1968. Among their members were two future members of the Allman Brothers Band, Duane Allman and his brother Gregg. Power of Love was their 2nd album. The first was a lighthearted, poppy 60's type sound with a slight soul taste, and "the music had no life to it" according to Allman. This one started to branch out into the southern rock they would end up going to. It contained more original songs by Allman, though they still felt constricted by its process. The album flopped. The band broke up when Duane explicitly told off executives at Liberty, and the band disbanded. Liberty Records threatened to sue the group for disbanding. Consequently, Gregg Allman gave them the rights to a solo album to prevent their doing so. Tracks for the album were only issues twenty-five years later when they were released as bonus tracks. I'm Hanging Up My Heart for You This song is very close to the southern rock sound that would ultimately become The Allman Brothers. Home for Summer The two-minute pop song format of the day was very restricting to Duane Allman. I Can Stand Alone The sound of the Hammond organ is prominent in this song, along with a more psychedelic sound in the guitar. Down in Texas This is a more guitar-laden and upbeat piece, though keeping with the soulful feel. Duane Allman died in a motorcycle accident in 1971. SOUNDTRACK: Elvis Presley - “Speedway” Elvis plays alongside Nancy Sinatra in this racing movie. STAFF PICKS: Gary Puckett and the Union Gap Band - Young Girl Get Out of My Mind Brian explains this is a song about a relationship with a girl too young. Perhaps this wouldn't go over quite as well today as it did in the 60's. The Wrecking Crew backs this song. The Rolling Stones - Jumpin' Jack Flash Rob recalls this classic riff (not really, because he was TWO). Bruce suggests that Rob may have been "born in a crossfire hurricane." Hey...are those bagpipes in the background? Blues Magoos - I Can Hear the Grass Grow Bruce is all about the Hammond organ on this one. This cut is off their third album, "Basic Blues Magoos." The Nice - America This was Wayne's pick, based on his appreciation of ELP (Emerson Lake and Palmer). As part of the group, “The Nice,” Keith Emerson remakes the song "America" from West Side Story with a little Dvořák in the mix as well. You get a lot of the feeel of Emerson, Lake, and Palmer in this group and song. LAUGH TRACK: Tiny Tim - Tiptoe through the Tulips We round out this episode with a very eclectic piece of music from the TV show, “Laugh In” regular, Tiny Tim. Can you ever get enough ukulele?

So many years have passed,” sing the Blues Magoos on the title track to Psychedelic Resurrection, their first new studio album in four decades. “But now we’re back and on this journey. ” The legendary psychedelic band from the Bronx, have returned with the release scheduled for October 14 on Kayos. Original members, lead vocalist/keyboardist Ralph Scala and vocalist/guitarist Peppy Castro, along with drummer Geoff Daking, who joined prior to the recording of the band’s hit debut album, Psychedelic Lollipop, were joined by newest additions, Mike Ciliberto on guitar and Peter Stuart Kohman on bass. The album also features cameos by original bassist Ronnie Gilbert and lead guitarist Mike Esposito, who also became part of the band before releasing their debut album, which went to #21 on the Billboard Top 200, thanks to the massive Top 5 single, “(We Ain’t Got Nothin’ Yet),” re-recorded for the new album.“Being a Blues Magoo is like taping into my childhood. Rock till we Drop!” states Castro. “This is what we do/We’ll take you in a new direction,” Scala promises on Psychedelic Resurrection, and it is both a reminder of where they came from and a bold step into reclaiming a classic garage-punk-rock sound that has been imitated by everyone from the White Stripes and the Black Keys to Ty Segall and Parquet Courts. The Blues Magoos’ November 1966 debut album represented a landmark of the kind of garage punk that anticipated bands like Television and the Ramones, with the band’s cover of John D. Loudermilk’s “Tobacco Road” included on Lenny Kaye’s original, influential 1972 Nuggets album, and their “We Ain’t Got Nothin’ Yet” as part of the 1998 re-issue.
