A Prophet's Journey through Midnight by Mickarl D. Thomas, Sr., DMin, MPAMickarl D. Thomas Sr. chronicles the challenges he's overcome in A Prophet's Journey through Midnight. As an asthmatic child, he lost two brothers before being born and was left to wonder why he was spared. While he grew up with loving parents and siblings, his father was illiterate. More challenges would loom-none worse than the death of his son, Mikey, at age seventeen. The words, "Mikey was killed," reverberate in his soul every day. When he received the news, he fell on his knees before throwing an exercise machine at the bedroom window. Then he tried to jump. His harrowing journey also involved a divorce, a battle with prostate cancer, and contending with the death of his parents. In this book, he shares the pain of going through so many ordeals and also looks back at the obstacles he overcame during forty-five years in pastoral ministry. Throughout, he shares his belief that no matter what takes place in life, God is in charge. As Psalm 22:8 declares, "For the kingdom is the Lord's, and He rules over the nations."Mickarl D. Thomas, Sr. is a native of Detroit, Michigan and graduated from Cass Technical High School in Detroit as well as Wayne St. University with a BA in sociology and speech. Self-awareness really is a superpower. Once you have the belief in yourself (regardless of what others assume about you), magic happens. In this episode we meet introvert, Catrina Franklin, a Senior Manager in R&D for a pharmaceutical company in Lake County, Illinois. Catrina shares her story of being told by a senior VP that they personally would not hire her as a project manager as her 'character' did not fit. She was deemed to be too quiet and not assertive. Luckily that did not deter Catrina and with her strong belief in herself as an introvert, and administrative arts background, she became her own self-advocate seeking out mentors and voluntary roles in which she could develop and gain experiences in being a leader. Catrina truly believes that in the corporate world, being quiet, not 'considered vocal enough', and speaking up - should not be seen as a lack of leadership quality. About Catrina Franklin Catrina Franklin is Senior Manager in R&D of AbbVie Pharmaceuticals in Lake County, Illinois. She previously worked for other companies such as Baxter and AmerisourceBergen as a project manager and in regulatory affairs for over 15 years. A native of Detroit, Michigan, Catrina is a graduate of Cass Technical High School and holds a bachelor's degree in Music and African American studies from The University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, Michigan; additionally, she holds a master's degree in business management from the University of Phoenix in Phoenix, Arizona. She later moved back to the midwest to become Director of Operations for the Lake Forest Symphony in Lake Forest, Illinois, until she left to focus on her family and earn her master's degree. Catrina's graduate studies led her to the corporate arena, supporting regulatory affairs. She received numerous volunteer awards for her service with her company's business resource groups and the Healthcare Businesswomen's Association (HBA). Even though she is not currently working in the not-for-profit sector, her love for the arts lead her into service on various dance boards, and she now serves as Board President of The Red Clay Dance Company, Chicago, IL as well as Chief of Staff for the Project Management Institute (PMI) Chicagoland, President for the Midwest Region Education and Events for HBA. Originally UPLOADED May 9, 2022. James Craig was born and raised in Detroit, Michigan. His father, a veteran of the United States Army, served as a reserve police officer at the time of the 1967 Detroit riot, which left a lasting impression on a young James Craig. Craig graduated from Cass Technical High School and joined the Detroit Police Department in 1977, where he was assigned to the 10th Precinct. After being laid off in 1981 due to budget constraints, he moved to Los Angeles where he joined the LAPD. During his tenure as a command officer of the LAPD, Craig was responsible for overseeing many of the most violent areas in Los Angeles and was able to achieve tremendous reductions in crime through the implementation of innovative strategy and by building strong community partnerships. His experience as the president of an African American police association exposed Craig to vitriolic and extreme elements of the Democratic Party and kick-started what had already been a political awakening for the young police officer. His transition in becoming a Republican hastened in 2009 after his appointment as Chief of Police in the City of Portland, Maine. In Portland, the police chief had the responsibility to approve concealed pistol licenses. Often urban police chiefs favor gun control, however, this experience helped him to understand that law abiding citizens with concealed weapons permits can be one of the biggest deterrents for crime. After two years in Portland, Craig was recruited by Cincinnati officials to serve as Chief of Police for the Cincinnati Police Department. Chief Craig was the first African American and first person from outside of Cincinnati to hold the position of Chief of Police. During his tenure as Cincinnati police chief, he was responsible for leading a department of 1,500 sworn and civilian personnel. In 2013, Chief Craig was asked by Governor Rick Snyder to serve as the 42nd Chief of Police to the City of Detroit, his hometown. Over the next eight years, Chief Craig led a department of 2,800 sworn and civilian personnel and achieved great success with propelling the Detroit Police Department into 21st century policing standards. One critical accomplishment came in 2014, when the police department reached compliance from mandated federal consent judgments. Judgements, which were agreed to in 2003 after a Department of Justice investigation, found a pattern of excessive force, civil rights abuses, and a culture of covering up misconduct. Confidence in the Department continued to increase among the city's residents and business owners, in part, due to the establishment of community policing initiatives including Neighborhood Police Officers to focus on quality-of-life issues and Children in Trauma Intervention (CITI) Camp to offer police mentorship to at-risk youth. One component for Detroit's success in reducing levels of violent crime was the increased use of data and analysis to support proactive policing through the Detroit Police Department (DPD) Real Time Crime Center, Community CompStat, Ceasefire Detroit, and Project Green Light Detroit programs. Craig is credited with reducing response times for priority one 911 calls. He has also initiated programs to cut gang membership and authorized large-scale sweeps aimed at protecting Detroit neighborhoods most impacted by crime. During his tenure, Craig built strong ties between the department and community leaders. He is widely recognized for his leadership during the unrest of Summer 2020, as other cities around the country experienced looting, fires, and riots. After 8 years as Chief of Police in his hometown of Detroit and 44 years as a dedicated public servant, Craig retired in June 2021. James Craig is running for Governor of Michigan with a commitment to fix leadership in state government and institute an effective administration that fosters a collaborative environment to drive the vibrancy of the state's economy and communities.

Listen to a new episode of PIVOT, a show brought to you by YNS Live with NFL Thread recorded live on Fireside with hosts Juliet Hahn and Cynthia Zordich featuring special guests Joe and Bri Barksdale.   Singer, songwriter, and producer Joe Barksdale describes his musical path as beginning with “gospel, rap, soul, and R&B, the four major food groups for black, inner-city Detroit.” With a style fueled by an eclectic genre mix, influences included Jimi Hendrix, Marvin Gaye, Sly, and the Family Stone, Teddy Pendergrass, and Kanye West. His unique sound smoothly blends aspects from blues, soul, jazz, rock, and more, creating an immersive experience at once both upbeat and up-close-and-personal — a captivating world spreading a message of love and unity, harmoniously uniting people through music.   Joe's 2017 debut album, Butterflies, Rainbows & Moonbeams, was followed in rapid succession by Electric Soul (2019), produced by the legendary Narada Michael Walden, Sincerely (2020), R & B(eats) (2020), and most recently, 2021's The Kyber Tapes, an homage to his Star Wars Obsession.   A passion for engineering led Barksdale to the Detroit Area Pre-College Engineering Program at age 13. When that didn't work out, football was one of the few summer activity options available. All-American honors as a Cass Technical High School lineman led to scholarship offers, and acceptance of Louisiana State University's offer, enhanced by its engineering program. After starting on LSU's 2008 NCAA championship team, he played with the Raiders, Rams, Chargers, and Cardinals. Concluding an 8-year NFL run, Barksdale hung up his cleats in 2019 to pursue music full-time, settling in Austin, Texas with his wife Brionna and two young daughters. Depression, long-undiagnosed Autism Spectrum Disorder, and a childhood peppered with abuse, rejection, and neglect fed a strong inner critic clamoring to divert Barksdale from his goals. In his youth, football and music lessons fostered resilience, while therapy as an adult re-channeled his energies to focus on excellence. After the passing of Cass coach and mentor Charleston Fobbs in 2013, Rams coach Jeff Fisher encouraged rekindling his love for music as a creative outlet to cope with grief. Music became a voice previously missing from his life, with professional instruction fine-tuning his multiple gifts. Concurrently, he fosters awareness to tackle the stigma surrounding mental illness — including publicly sharing his own experience of 20+ years of silently suffering from depression and suicidal thoughts — to encourage others to seek help. Focused, driven, and competitive in all pursuits, Barksdale is committed to emerging as his generation's premier guitar player, eyeing Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction. Refusing constraint to a single creative outlet, he's an avid journaler and poet, and relishes his role as Tech Lord of the Sith, producing quick, irreverent product review videos. Simultaneously enamored with comedy — citing Bill Burr, Dave Chappelle, and Patrice O'Neal as primary influences — he includes the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor among future ambitious goals. A dedicated artisan defying singular categorization, Barksdale is confidently making his mark across a far-reaching creative galaxy, forcefully checking multiple boxes along his journey.   Animal addict, self-starter, espresso shot lover, entrepreneur, and relocation specialist. Brionna Barksdale likes to say she's in the sweet spot between productivity and creativity, and she uses those attributes to help craft solutions and experiences both virtually and in real life. As a wife and mother of four, two daughters, and two Dobermans Pinschers @aria_and_anikan - Brionna is the CEO/founder of Top-Tier Event Group. Brionna's latest association is joining The Pet Summit team as Operations Director. Although Brionna may not be a social media influencer, she inspires people every day by being authentic with everyone she encounters.   Reach out to Joe and Bri at TheDavidBrand.com or via Instagram.     Remarkable Quotes   Joe Barksdale:   “Football was the first time I was around adults that were happy to see me. I fell in love with being good. I fell in love with being the best at what I do. It was the competitive in me that allowed me to be good. Being on the football field gave me a purpose and that I deserved to be on the planet. I wasn't just taking, I was giving.”   “I was never passionate about football. I was passionate about being good at the game. The reason why I wanted to be good is for the accolades because I wanted a reason to prove that I was meant to be alive.”   “I know that the best 'ME' that I can be will be the best 'ME' for my family.”   Bri Barksdale:   “You can either be stuck in traffic or the reason for the traffic jam. So you gotta be thankful that you're just stuck in traffic.”   “It's one thing to pivot. It's another thing to pivot when your plan doesn't go seamlessly and there's a lot of pivoting that goes on.”   “I wrote down the words because I'm more of a lyrics person. He [Joe Barksdale] is more of the music person.”     Sponsor   The YNS Live With NFL Thread Super Bowl Experience is sponsored by Shutterstock Editorial.  Wherever you go - Shutterstock is there to capture it!   Contact Shutterstock at assigments@shutterstock.com and take the field with Shutterstock's award-winning photography superstars.       Find Us Online! You'd never know that she is parenting two different generations simultaneously. In our conversation, Maurita gets candid about her experience navigating potty training for one child and driver's training for the other at the same time! That alone is a major feat but in addition to parenting, Maurita is a full time engineer, volunteer, active member of Zeta Phi Beta sorority, and more!In our conversation we reminisce about our common experiences as Detroit girls. We reflect on the close knit communities of our childhood. And we recognize the ways we have both crafted communities to meet our children's unique needs. Children are for sure our greatest teachers. It is because of them that we are more intention about who we have in our lives and how we move in the world we inhabit.  Our childhood communities may have shaped us into the women we became but our children have redesigned the way we move in the communities we now inhabit. Maurita Mussawwir speaks a lot about her daughter's fearlessness and her son's ability to 'read a room.' Like many moms, she doesn't want to take credit for the unique ways her children's strengths have developed. But she agrees whole heartedly that she set the foundation from which they will build their own worlds. Just like the foundation the community of our childhood built for us. Ms. Mussawwir is a native Detroiter, a Cass Technical High School graduate and alumna of Central State University (the midwest Historically Black College). She is a black women in engineering. Maurita is also a believer in community and defines community at it's core as people coming together to look out for each other.
