For nearly 50 years conservative Christian psychologist Dr. James Dobson influenced countless couples, families, and churches through his globally ubiquitous Focus on the Family broadcasts, books, videos, and lectures. In the immediate aftermath of his death last week at the age of 89, podcasters Fong and Kemp talk openly about the way his influence impacted them and their ministries, the unspeakable harm his teaching did to countless children and queer people, and the little-known fact that it was all shaped by the debunked racist theory of eugenics.

Historically Thinking: Conversations about historical knowledge and how we achieve it
In 1960 Yigael Yadin, formerly chief of the Israeli general staff and by that year a prize winning archaeologist, visited the home of Israel's president David Ben-Gurion, and said to him “Mr. President, I have the honor to tell you that we have discovered 15 dispatches written or dictated by the last president of ancient Israel over 1800 years ago.” Yadin was announcing the discovery of a collection of scrolls written by Simon Bar-Kosiba, better known as Bar-Kohkba, who had led the Second Jewish Revolt against Rome, from 132 to 135 AD. Bar-Kochba was an inspiration to Israelis in the founding generation of the Republic of Israel who otherwise detested each other politically, finding in him a common source of inspiration for their own struggle. His is one of the many legacies of the series of revolts by the Jews against their Roman rulers, but not close to being the most consequential. For among the many unintended consequences of the wars of Rome against the Jews was not only the creation of the Talmud and modern Judaism, but the simultaneous growth of Christianity. With me to talk about these momentous events is Barry Strauss. He is the Corliss Page Dean Senior Fellow at the Hoover Institution of Stanford University as well as the Bryce and Edith M. Bowmar Professor in Humanistic Studies Emeritus at Cornell University, where he was formerly Chair of the Department of History as well as Professor of History and Classics. A prolific author, his most recent book is Jews vs Rome: Two Centuries of Rebellion Against the Worlds Mightiest Empire. This is his fourth appearance on Historically Thinking. For Further InvestigationBarry Strauss' most recent appearance on the podcast was to discuss "The War That Made the Roman Empire". He also contributed

We want people to get what they deserve. At the same time, of course, we want God's grace in our lives. How do we pray for both with integrity? In Chapter 25 of Ultimate Intention, Nancy reads one of the most pivotal lessons in the entire book: Love in Right Order. Here we see that God's goal is not simply that His people love, but that their love be rectified—purified and set in right order. Drawing from the Song of Solomon, we see the progression of the bride's love moving from selfish possessiveness, to shared affection, and finally to selfless surrender: “I am my Beloved's, and His desire is toward me.” This chapter exposes how much of modern Christianity is still inverted—filled with prayers and desires centered on “me and mine.” But God's ultimate intention is to mature His sons and His bride so that their love is not self-seeking but poured out for Him. Nancy highlights how the “wine press” of frustration and crushing becomes the place where God purifies love so that it flows freely back to Him and to others. Mature love knows no “because”; it simply rests in “I love.” Here we go! Thanks for Listening! In this week’s episode of the Granger Smith Podcast, Granger sits down with Kirk Cameron for a wide-ranging conversation on family, faith, and the life of the church. They share about family rhythms, Sunday dinners, and the importance of fellowship before moving into deeper discussions about worship, what church gatherings are meant to be, and how Christians can stay rooted in a culture that often feels hostile to their faith. Granger and Kirk also talk about the blessings of cultural Christianity and make an important distinction: cultural Christianity isn’t the same as being a “lukewarm Christian.” Rather, it points to the benefit of living in a society shaped by Christian values, even while rejecting the idea of half-hearted faith. Later in the episode, they respond to an email about a headline out of China describing a “pregnancy robot” being developed with an artificial womb. They ask what this technology might mean for families, infertility, and most importantly, God’s design for life. It’s an episode filled with personal stories, church history, and honest reflection on how faith speaks into the modern world.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

In this conversation, Jason sits down with Dom Ruso, pastor of The 180 Church in Greater Montreal, to talk about the joys and challenges of church planting in one of the most secularized contexts in North America.Dom shares openly about his discernment journey, how God drew him and his wife back to Quebec despite initial resistance, and what it has looked like to build a church community from scratch in a region where many are spiritually open but institutionally skeptical.Jason and Dom explore themes that matter deeply to pastors today:Dom's honest wrestle with returning to Quebec, and the slow ways God confirmed the call to plant a church there. The unique dynamics of Quebec culture and what it means to preach the Bible in ways that connect with people who carry wounds from religion or who feel indifferent toward Christianity. How congregations can embody health and unity in a divided cultural landscape, and what Canada's regional differences can teach us about God's work across the country. Why it's not enough to “tell” people what the Bible says, but to invite them into its story, and how plot points of Scripture resonate with modern longings for justice, meaning, and identity. Why it matters to recover a distinct vision of pastoral calling, and how the overlap with modern leadership and coaching culture can blur what shepherding the people of God really means.Dom also talks about his new book, The Bible for a Shifting Secular Age, which brings together his pastoral experience and academic work to offer handles for understanding secularism and fresh ways of presenting Scripture today.Show Notes The 180 ChurchThe Bible for a Shifting Secular AgeGive to our $30,000 August Match CampaignFall 2025 Pastors Retreat at Barnabas LandingThe Pastorate Listener SurveyThank You to Our Episode SponsorSpecial thanks to the Canadian Bible Society for making this episode possible. What remains when we remove Christ from Christianity? A powerful exploration of how modern Christianity often betrays its namesake by replacing love with judgment, inclusion with exclusion, and grace with condemnation.Through vulnerable personal stories and penetrating cultural analysis, we confront the uncomfortable reality that Gandhi articulated: "I like your Christ, but not your Christianity." From turning away from homeless people while claiming religious devotion, to Christians leading opposition against refugees and immigrants despite clear biblical mandates to welcome strangers, we see a faith that has lost its center. The heart of this spiritual crisis lies in our desperate search for validation and worth. We collect "medals" of achievement, relationship status, and financial success, wearing them proudly until they're inevitably stripped away. But Jesus offers a different medal—the unchangeable identity of being God's beloved child—that never leaves our neck regardless of circumstances or performance.Putting Christ back into Christianity requires two transformational moves: accepting Christ's unconditional love rather than frantically trying to earn it, and extending that same love to others—especially those who seem least deserving of it. The families of Emanuel AME Church shooting victims demonstrated this radical love when they looked at their loved ones' killer and said, "I forgive you."What would happen if we were given the microphone to address those who have wounded us most deeply? Could we find the courage to bless rather than curse? When we choose forgiveness over vengeance and love over hatred, Christ returns to the center of our faith, transforming it from hollow religion into living relationship.Support the showIf you enjoyed this episode, consider subscribing to Madison Church on your favorite podcast platform. A terrifying Christian movement, the Seven Mountains Mandate, aims to dominate every facet of society—religion, family, education, government, media, arts, and business. This blatant attempt at societal takeover, supported by nearly half of evangelicals, mirrors the very authoritarianism they claim to despise in other ideologies. It's a calculated, insidious push for Christian nationalism, leveraging media control and targeting vulnerable youth to build an ideological "army," proving that power, not piety, is the true goal. This is what fascism looks like.News Source:The Seven Mountains Mandate Is Not A Hill You Want To Die OnBy Stuart Delony for Snarky FaithAugust 6, 2025

Not every U.S. strategic partner is a democracy, but those receiving American aid should not trample such basic freedoms as religious liberty. Years ago in Egypt, Coptic Patriarch Pope Tawadros II told host Cliff May that discrimination was diminishing under President Sissi. Today, USCIRF reports show the opposite: systemic repression of religious minorities.FDD's Mariam Wahba, writing recently in The Free Press, calls out the “brazen attacks on Christianity” in Egypt and beyond. She joins Cliff to discuss what's gone wrong — and why it matters — on Foreign Podicy.
Those on the far left need to read the Bible carefully and practice what Jesus preached, not some made-up political theology that equates Christianity with wokeness. It's simply not true. Christ said you should give your own goods to the poor, not that you should force someone to give up theirs. The Brood is going international! We've reached the travel specials and the first destination is Scotland and Ireland. This episode is complete with a tin whistle overhaul of the theme song. If you guessed that you would get Duggar Time and a lot of "what do you mean we?", you'd be correct. Lego Hair has the buffoonery dialed up since they're in another country, complete with a very awkward, ineffective pitch for Christianity. They jump on a ferry and head over to Ireland to spend time at a working farm. Beautiful, green countryside is the stage for the kids to try and herd sheep (Patches the Dog is much more adept at it). Whitney takes us back in time and we read through some of the comments on the family's websites from way back in the 2010's.
