This is the fourth live Q&A for The Christ Empire Couldn't Keep, and this week we're in the Americas with Bartolomé de las Casas — Joerg's pick over Martin Luther for the Reformation-era chapter, and the hinge of the whole course. Here's why. Las Casas owned an encomienda. He had Native people working for him. He was, in Joerg's words, a slave driver. Then he woke up, gave the land away, freed the people, and spent the rest of his life arguing against the conquest. Gustavo Gutiérrez read him as a precursor to liberation theology, and when Joerg got into the sources, he thought: not so fast. Because what Las Casas actually represents is the pivot from empire hard to empire soft — from fire and sword to kindness and charity, which is nicer, preferable, and still empire. The whole session is about learning to tell soft empire from the way of Christ when they look almost identical. We got the charity/advocacy/solidarity distinction, the flip on anthropology (not others are like us but what if I were like them), why converting from one God to another is harder than converting from no God at all, why land back needs labor back alongside it, and Joerg's answer to the flag-wrapped warrior Christ, which is two words long. Pakistani Christians could face renewed persecution following the Archbishop of Canterbury's decision to withdraw an honour to a leading Muslim cleric, Monsignor Michael Nazir-Ali warns today in this episode of Holy Smoke.The former Bishop of Rochester speaks to Damian Thompson following the news that Lambeth Palace has had to withdraw an award to Hafiz Ashrafi after previous comments by the Imam came to light. Following the ‘Reconciliation and Interfaith Cooperation' award being presented, it came to light that Ashrafi had praised Osama bin Laden in 2007, saying he would give the mastermind of the 9/11 attacks the title Saifullah – or 'Sword of God' – for 'serving Muslims by waging jihad against infidels'. The question remains ‘why there was not due diligence' Msgr Nazir-Ali tells Damian, saying Pakistani Christian leaders fear a backlash. The ‘reactionary action on the part of extremists' should have been thought about before making the announcement, Nazir-Ali said, as he criticised Lambeth Palace. Msgr Nazir-Ali, now a priest of the Catholic Ordinariate and who was born in Pakistan, is a world renowned authority on Islam's relations with Christianity. What can psychotherapy teach us about truth, human nature, and our relationship with God? In this episode of The Kubik Report, I talk with therapist Justin Kovanis about the fascinating intersection between Christian faith and secular psychotherapy. Their conversation explores how the process of understanding the human mind can uncover truths about ourselves—and provide valuable “raw material” for spiritual growth and transformation. Justin explains the distinction between explicitly practicing “Christian counseling” and being a Christian who works faithfully and ethically as a therapist. Rather than imposing religious values on clients, the Christian therapist can bring compassion, respect, careful listening, and a deep concern for the individual into the therapeutic relationship. The discussion examines four universal human concerns frequently encountered in psychotherapy: death, loneliness, freedom, and meaning. These struggles are hardly foreign to Scripture. David's Psalms reveal periods of fear, despair, and emotional turmoil, while Jeremiah openly expresses grief and anguish. Their experiences challenge the idea that strong faith somehow makes Christians immune to psychological distress. We also discuss healthy versus destructive shame, the importance of humility, and therapy as a process of “truth discovery”—helping people understand themselves without condemnation while accepting responsibility for change. Drawing on ideas from C.S. Lewis, Scripture, and clinical experience, this thoughtful conversation asks an important question: Can greater psychological self-understanding help prepare us for deeper spiritual transformation? The episode concludes by opening the door to future conversations about the Dark Tetrad, human malevolence, and the extraordinary biblical concept of agape love.

In this episode of our Goddess series, Kathleen Joan and I explore Mary Magdalene, the woman behind the stories, her place in early Christianity, and why her presence still matters so deeply today. Mary Magdalene was a real woman who walked the earth. She was a devoted follower and the wife of Jesus, a spiritual leader in her own right, and a powerful presence in the resurrection story. And yet, over the centuries, her role was diminished, rewritten, and in many ways pushed to the edges. So Kathleen and I ask a different question. What happens when we bring Mary Magdalene back into the center of the story? We explore the woman she was, the wisdom she carried, and how she has become such a powerful expression of the Divine Feminine for women who are hungry for a deeper, fuller understanding of the sacred. My co-host for this series is Kathleen Joan, a priestess of Brigid devoted to the resurrection of the Divine Feminine in today's world, especially for women with Christian ancestry. Kathleen spent more than 15 years in ministry and holds a dual Master's degree in theology and ministry. The ascension of Christ and the pouring out of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost answer the question at the heart of Acts — who are the true people of God? The answer — those who follow Jesus Christ. Christianity began as a movement from within Judaism which explains why the Temple plays such a large role in these early chapters. The Spirit of God now rests in a Temple of living stones called the church. And this Spirit-empowered church receives a mission: the risen Christ has ascended to the highest seat of power at the right hand of the Father. Therefore, all false Temples and gods whether Jew or Gentile must surrender before this king. Acts 3:1-6:7 shows how the power of the Spirit testifies about Christ through the church as they embody the life of the kingdom in various ways. First, we see the mercy and message of the true Temple. Second, we see the blessings and curses of the Temple. Finally, we see the protection and provision of the Temple.

James Talarico was asked one question at a Texas campaign stop: Who's your favorite drag queen in the state? He didn't hesitate. “Oh my gosh. Probably Alyssa Edwards.” Watch the clip. Then ask yourself if that's the reflex you want in a U.S. senator. Most Americans could not name a drag queen if you handed them a week. The Democratic Senate nominee in Texas had a name in under a second — and he smiled when he said it. The performer he picked, Alyssa Edwards, has described himself as a drag performer who works with children. Annie Lowrey's new book, The Time Tax, argues that the most regressive levy in American life is the hours each of us must spend on hold, in waiting rooms, and filling out forms a competent state would have pre-filled — roughly fifty a year on average, and far more if you're poor. Tyler spends much of this conversation pressing the opposite case, asking whether that bureaucracy is quietly serving a useful purpose by rationing knee surgeries that don't work, deterring fraud, or screening for immigrants with gumption.
