Fr. Mike discusses the story of Jeremiah and the Ark of the Covenant, offering insight on where it was hidden and how that affected the people of God. He also looks ahead to the rest of 2 Maccabees and poses a question for all of us: What will the people who love us remember about us? Today's readings are 2 Maccabees 2, Sirach 42-44, and Proverbs 24:8-9. For the complete reading plan, visit ascensionpress.com/bibleinayear. Dick Brogden reminded us that being a friend of Jesus means more than affection; it's loyalty, empathy and trust in action. When we share His heart, steward His mission and allow His strength to work through our weakness, we become true friends who honor His trust and carry His name to the world.
Learn why Naghmeh Panahi says "I think we have misunderstood Genesis" and "Because we are honoring women in the house churches of Iran is one of the reasons God is blessing so much." This is Part One of our remarkable interview with underground house church leader Nagmeh Panahi. Why did Naghmeh feel ashamed when she saw how God raised up women to lead the underground house churches during the revival in the land of her birth? Bruce and Naghmeh talk about this and the life changing insights from Eden that open doors for all to minister using God's good gifts. Born in Tehran in 1977, Naghmeh Abedini Panahi immigrated to the United States at the age of nine and soon converted from Islam to Christianity. In late 2001, after graduating from college, she returned to Iran to work as a businesswoman and missionary. There, she witnessed—and experienced—the oppression and violence women are subjected to every day in the Middle East. It was there that she also met her future husband, Saeed Abedini, with whom she led one of the largest house-church movements in Iran. In 2005, due to persecution, she and Saeed moved to the United States, where their two children were born. When Saeed visited Iran in 2012 to work on opening an orphanage, he was arrested for his involvement in the underground church and sentenced to eight years in a notorious prison. Naghmeh unceasingly advocated for Saeed's release, appealing to President Barack Obama, Donald Trump, the U.S. Congress, the United Nations, and nearly every major news outlet over the three and a half years that Saeed was in prison. Yet underneath the surface of her leadership in the Iranian house church, her family life in America, and the spotlight of her advocacy, Naghmeh had been an abused wife, and Saeed's imprisonment had further intensified his controlling and abusive behavior. It took the crisis and aftermath of Saeed's arrest for Naghmeh to finally recognize what had been happening to her and begin to find healing. Naghmeh's personal experience with domestic violence and the misuse of religion to reinforce abuse has given her a passion to advocate for women who are vulnerable to abuse and oppression because of religion. She is the cofounder and executive director of Tahir Alnisa (“Setting Women Free”) Foundation, which serves women and children around the world impacted by domestic abuse and religious-motivated violence. Naghmeh's autobiography, I Didn't Survive: Emerging Whole After Deception, Persecution, and Hidden Abuse (Whitaker House), was released in October 2023.Links: https://www.tahriralnisa.org/about/naghmeh-panahi/ and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1SJr4PaZ8Mg The Tru316 Foundation (www.Tru316.com) is the home of The Eden Podcast with Bruce C. 1. Christian Persecution in Nigeria Senator Cruz highlights what he describes as a massive and underreported crisis involving the persecution of Christians in Nigeria. Key points include: Over 50,000 Christians killed since 2009. 18,000 churches and 2,000 schools burned, allegedly by extremist groups like Boko Haram and ISIS in West Africa. Accusations that some Nigerian government officials are complicit or negligent in addressing the violence. Cruz has introduced legislation to designate Nigeria as a “Country of Particular Concern” and impose sanctions on individual officials involved in or ignoring the persecution. He criticizes the mainstream media for failing to cover the issue adequately. Public figures like Bill Maher and Van Jones are cited as supporting the claim that this is a planned genocide and that media silence is a moral failure. 2. Christian Persecution in China This section shifts to a similar story: The Chinese Communist Party’s crackdown on Christianity, particularly targeting Pastor Jin Mingri and the Zion Church. Cruz introduced a bipartisan resolution with Senator Chris Coons condemning China’s actions and urging the release of imprisoned pastors. He emphasizes the need for economic and diplomatic pressure, especially with President Trump’s upcoming meeting with President Xi Jinping. The resolution calls for respect for religious freedom and highlights China’s long-standing designation as a “Country of Particular Concern” by the U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom. 3. DOJ Surveillance of Republican Senators Cruz discusses revelations that: The Biden DOJ and Special Counsel Jack Smith subpoenaed phone records of nine Republican senators and one House member in connection with the January 6 investigation. Cruz’s phone records were requested from AT&T, but the company refused to comply, citing constitutional protections under the Speech and Debate Clause. He frames this as political persecution and a dangerous abuse of power, likening it to Watergate. He calls for Congressional hearings and transparency to prevent future surveillance of elected officials. Please Hit Subscribe to this podcast Right Now. Halloween often stirs tension for believers — a holiday steeped in fear, darkness, and controversy. As our daily prayer and devotional note, some choose to avoid it altogether, while others seek creative ways to redeem it. In this devotional, Alicia Searl challenges us to look at this season differently: not as a night to hide our faith but as an opportunity to shine God’s light in the darkness. Jesus never avoided places or people marked by fear or sin. He faced darkness with courage, truth, and prayer — relying on His Father’s strength and authority. As followers of Christ, we too are called to stand firm in faith and reflect His light in a broken world. This Halloween, instead of turning off the porch light, what if we opened our doors in love and hospitality? Whether through a kind smile, a word of encouragement, or a small gesture that points to Jesus, we can show our neighbors the light of Christ. Let this be the night we live out Matthew 5:14–16 — radiating joy, truth, and grace for all to see. Today's Bible Reading:“You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.” – Matthew 5:14–16
Jeff McCullough is an ordained minister and has served in ministry for over 25 years, including 15 years in pastoral ministry. He holds a Master's in Biblical Studies from Moody Theological Seminary. Now serving in Utah, Jeff previously spent two decades preaching and leading in the St. Louis area. He focuses on using online platforms to create content that fosters curious, honest, and respectful interfaith conversations about faith, Jesus, and scripture. Jeff and his wife, Joy, have four children. Links @HelloSaints on YouTube @Hello.Saints on Instagram Fitting in With Other Christian Churches | A Discussion with Jeff McCullough When a Pastor Explores The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints | An Interview with Jeff McCullough Allowing Our Pain to Turn Us to Christ | An Interview with Joy McCullough A Latter-day Saint Bishop Sits Down with Four Evangelical Pastors Transcript available with the video in the Zion Lab community Highlights Jeff discusses the evolution of his content creation, and his intentions regarding the Latter-day Saint community. The conversation centers on the dynamics of interfaith dialogue, the pitfalls of theological simplification, and the challenge of keeping Christ—rather than cultural rules or personal motives—at the center of Christian faith and ministry. Key Insights A Shift in Intent: Jeff's channel has evolved from initial exploration to intentionally maintaining a safe space for sustained, nuanced dialogue between Protestants and Latter-day Saints. His primary goal is to foster a conversation where all parties focus on the shared desire to see Christ "high and lifted up" [48:44]. Authenticity Over Stereotype: To improve dialogue, Jeff's method is to learn to recognize the authentic core beliefs of the Latter-day Saint tradition. This allows him to push past misconceptions and stereotypes, making for more efficient and productive conversation [06:13]. Beware of Theological Shorthand: Both traditions are guilty of using "theological shorthand," which reduces complex doctrine (e.g., heaven, grace) to superficial, culturally driven explanations. They encourage leaders to move past these simplifications to grasp the deeper, more complex theological concepts [12:42]. Bridging vs. Converting: They discuss the idea of Jeff converting, concluding that his ongoing role as a non-Latter-day Saint bridge-builder and model of interfaith respect is a more fruitful endeavor for the greater Kingdom than a simple conversion [52:03]. The Dangers of Cultural Gatekeeping: Jeff shares his concern over "cultural Christianity" in the Evangelical world, where non-essential cultural rules and political positions become the "litmus test" for faith, resulting in toxicity and obstructing the clarity of the gospel [57:33]. Faith Maturity: A mature faith should be able to sit with the complexity of opposing views and challenging historical or doctrinal issues. Viewing such dialogue as a threat indicates an opportunity for spiritual inoculation and growth [46:10]. Leadership Applications Prioritize the "Point": Leaders should distinguish between things that "matter" (secondary doctrinal debates, value systems) and "the point" (the centrality of Christ and the message of redemption), ensuring that cultural expectations do not overshadow the core gospel message [01:02:25]. Model Curiosity, not Criticism: Leaders should approach different faith traditions, complicated church history, and internal member struggles with curiosity over criticism to foster a culture of sincere, thoughtful engagement [01:04:40]. Address Motives Directly: Leaders should push back against cynical or superficial tropes like the misuse of the word "priestcraft," instead encouraging members to seek to understand a person's heart and genuine intentions [23:29]. A movement seeks to redefine Christianity. Some think that it is a much-needed progressive reformation. Others believe that it is an attack on historic Christianity. Alisa Childers never thought she would question her Christian faith. She was raised in a Christian home, where she had seen her mom and dad feed the hungry, clothe the homeless, and love the outcast. She had witnessed God at work and then had dedicated her own life to leading worship, as part of the popular Christian band ZOEgirl. All that was deeply challenged when she met a progressive pastor, who called himself a hopeful agnostic. Alisa will join us to describe the intellectual journey Alisa took over several years as she wrestled with a series of questions that struck at the core of the Christian faith.Become a Parshall Partner: http://moodyradio.org/donateto/inthemarket/partnersSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Michael Shermer sits down with Charles Murray (author of The Bell Curve, Coming Apart, and now Taking Religion Seriously) for a riveting 100-minute conversation about Murray's late-life turn from Harvard-bred agnosticism (“Smart people don't believe that stuff anymore”) to Bayesian theism (“I put the afterlife at just over 50%”). This wide-ranging discussion explores the evidence for the existence of God and the afterlife, the problem of evil, and the historical growth of Christianity. They also delve into topics such as the nature of consciousness, terminal lucidity, and even evolutionary vs. religious perspectives on love. A thought-provoking exploration for skeptics, seekers, and anyone wondering whether the universe has a purpose. Charles Murray is a policy analyst educated at Harvard and MIT and currently serves as the Hayek Emeritus Scholar at the American Enterprise Institute. He is the author of several influential books, including the controversial The Bell Curve, Coming Apart, and Facing Reality. His most recent book is Taking Religion Seriously.

On Thursday's Mark Levin Show, there was a major FBI bust of an illegal sports betting scheme involving four NBA teams (Charlotte Hornets, Portland Trail Blazers, Los Angeles Lakers, Toronto Raptors) and four mafia families (Bonanno, Gambino, Genovese, Lucchese), netting over $7 million. The NBA Has a problem, people need to have faith in the game. This is a massive blackeye for the NBA. Also, those who say that Israel will never annex the West Bank (Judea and Samaria), have no idea what's taking place in the West Bank. Israel will do whatever it chooses to do. The recent Knesset vote on annexation was initiated by the left to divide conservatives and the administration. If Judea and Samaria don't belong to the Jews, who does it belong to? Shiloh's history proves Judea and Samaria as ancestral Jewish homeland is crucial to Judaism and Christianity. Later, Zohran Mamdani got his butt kicked at the NYC debate. He's a sloganeer, which is typical of Marxists, but he won't be substantive at all. Afterward, Obamacare is a lie focused on centralization and control rather than affordability, leading to loss of civil liberties, restricted benefits, and second-rate care where patients can't access desired doctors, hospitals, or medicines. It's just like socialist systems in Canada and Britain, from which people flee to the US for better care, yet Democrats aim to mimic them. Democrats caused the government shutdown to maintain and expand Obamacare subsidies and reinstate benefits for illegal aliens, refusing reforms and relying on media to blame Republicans, ultimately destroying Medicare, Medicaid, and employee insurance by inflating healthcare costs. Finally, a Daily Mail article predicts Christianity's decline as America's majority religion amid Islam's rise. U.S. was founded on tolerant Judeo-Christian values fused with Enlightenment, rejected by Marxists and Islamists. This ideological clash threatens free society's survival. Family traditions are powerful threads that connect generations — reminders of who we are, where we’ve come from, and how God has worked in our story. In today’s prayer devotional, Rachael Adams, host of The Love Offering, reflects on her grandmother “Munder” and the beautiful ways her faith and love continue to shape family gatherings even after she’s gone. Through recipes, celebrations, and stories, Rachael’s family keeps alive both her memory and the message of God’s goodness. In Scripture, God Himself established holy days and traditions so His people would continually remember His faithfulness. These rhythms of remembrance weren’t just rituals — they were living testimonies passed from one generation to the next. As we create and continue our own family traditions, we, too, can honor God by making Him the center of our celebrations. May this prayer inspire you to celebrate God’s work in your life, preserve your faith heritage, and intentionally pass it on — so that future generations will know and love the Lord. Today's Bible Reading:“This is a day you are to commemorate; for the generations to come you shall celebrate it as a festival to the LORD—a lasting ordinance.” – Exodus 12:14

***This programme contains references to imprisonment, child abandonment and references to suicide which some listeners may find upsetting*** Since the 1950s, North Korea has been an authoritarian, isolationist state, and in practice there is no freedom of religion. Timothy Cho and his schoolteacher parents had learned to distrust and even fear Christianity. But the faith was going to play a significant role in Timothy's life. At the age of nine, Timothy returned from school, to find that his parents had fled the country, leaving him behind. So, at the age of 17, he decided to follow them, but was captured by Chinese soldiers when he crossed the border and returned to prison in North Korea. Timothy made his second attempt at escape in the same year, and this time he was successful, arriving in the city of Shanghai with a group of other North Korean refugees. The group broke into the American school in Shanghai, thinking they would get asylum that way, but the school handed them over to the Chinese police. Back in prison, feeling hopeless and fearful, Timothy met a South Korean gangster, who taught him how to pray. Timothy made a deal with God, that if God gave him his freedom, he would dedicate his life to his faith. If you are If you are affected by anything you hear in this programme, it is important to talk to someone about it and get support. If you are interested in the Daily Bible Devotional, you can find it at the links below:Amazon - (paperback, hardcover, and Kindle)YouTube Video Introducing the ContentFeel free to reach out with any questions: emersonk78@me.comHebrews 6Believers must grow beyond the basics of faith and pursue spiritual maturity. They are warned about the danger of falling away after receiving the truth. Those who abandon it are pictured as crucifying again the Son of God and are likened to worthless ground that drinks in the rain but produces only thorns and is cursed. Still, there is confidence of better things for those who continue in faithfulness. God is just and will not forget the work done in His name. Diligence and endurance are encouraged, imitating those who through faith and patience inherit what was promised. God's promises are certain, confirmed with an oath, giving believers strong encouragement. This hope is a secure and steady anchor for the soul, reaching beyond this life where the Savior has gone. We are encouraged to move forward in spiritual maturity, rather than remain in the early stages of faith. God calls us to a deepening commitment, characterized by perseverance, exploration, and love in action. We must take seriously the warning against falling away and instead be intentional and passionate about anchoring our hope in God. He sees our service and remembers our work, and His patience is just in assuring that our labor is not in vain. Our hope is not uncertain; it is rooted in the unchanging nature of God and the certainty of His promises. As we imitate those who patiently trusted God and received the promises, we live confidently and faithfully, fueled by enduring hope through Jesus Christ. Faithful Father, we thank You for challenging us to grow beyond the foundational principles of Christianity. We accept that challenge and ask for Your assistance. Please strengthen us so that we refuse to drift or become complacent. When trials tempt us to retreat, anchor our hearts in the hope founded in Jesus. Remind us that You are just and never forget the acts of love we perform in Your name. Guard us from unbelief; nourish our lives so they may yield the fruit of righteousness, not thorns. Keep us steadfast in Your unchanging oath and promise until our Savior returns. Thought Questions: How do you continue to grow faith? What tools or approaches to scripture help you understand and apply God's will more effectively? Is it possible for someone whom God has saved to fall away? How do you diligently connect to God in a way that prevents this outcome? What promises has God made to you that help you stay faithful in times of trouble? What has Jesus done that has instilled unshakable hope?

The Never-Ending Story of our Bound Will & Election. In this episode, we write an epilogue —so to speak— to our series on the Bondage of the Will and wrap up our thoughts about the Here We Still Stand Conference 2025. We ask, “From whence comes a preacher?” Where does one go for gospel-comfort and the gifts of salvation? What is the Gospel? What is the purpose of the Church? What are the practical consequences of having a will that is bound up to sin, the world, and the evil one? What happens when the churches reject the “hinge” upon which all doctrines turn? And we talk about fantasy and science-fiction writing, 80s children's movies, and other pop culture nostalgia. SHOW NOTES: The Captivation of the Will: Luther Vs. 'These Martyrs contested for piety's sake in the year 524 in Najran, a city of Arabia Felix (present-day Yemen). When Dhu Nuwas, ruler of the Himyarite tribe in south Arabia, and a Judaizer, took power, he sought to blot out Christianity, especially at Najran, a Christian city. Against the counsels of Arethas, chief man of Najran, the city surrendered to Dhu Nuwas, who immediately broke the word he had given and sought to compel the city to renounce Christ. Led by Saint Arethas, hundreds of martyrs, including women, children, and babes, valiantly withstood his threats, and were beheaded and burned. After the men had been slain, all the free-born Christian women of Najran were brought before the tyrant and commanded to abjure Christ or die; yet they rebuked the persecutor with such boldness that he said even the men had not insulted him so contemptuously. So great was their faith that not one woman was found to deny Christ in all Najran, although some of them suffered torments more bitter than most of the men. In alliance with Byzantium, the Ethiopian King Elesbaan liberated Najran from Dhu Nuwas soon after and raised up churches in honour of the Martyrs. Najran became a place of pilgrimage until the rise of Islam a century later. At the end of his life King Elesbaan, who was also called Caleb, retired into solitude as a hermit; he sent his crown to Jerusalem as an offering to the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. He also is commemorated on this day as a saint. Saint Arethas' name in Arabic, Harith, means "plowman, tiller," much the same as "George" in Greek.' (Great Horologion) Ethiopia is still a Christian nation, surrounded by Islamic states. The late Emperor Haile Selasse's name means, in Ethiopian, "Power of the Trinity."

As we begin to wrap up 1 Maccabees, Fr. Mike directs our attention to how 2 Maccabees will tell the same story in a different way. In Sirach, we are encouraged to know our own hearts, so that we can know our strengths, weaknesses, and where we might need healing. The readings are 1 Maccabees 15, Sirach 36-37, and Proverbs 23:26-28. For the complete reading plan, visit ascensionpress.com/bibleinayear. Please note: The Bible contains adult themes that may not be suitable for children - parental discretion is advised.
