"In the last episode I mentioned that a young John Ash was baptized and joined the Loughwood Baptist Church in Dorset. This church erected a chapel in the 1650s that is still standing; a beautiful little building fully restored by Great Britain's National Trust. But before I tell you some of the story of the church, let me tell you about the chapel itself because it one of the oldest and loveliest Baptist meetinghouses still standing in England." Description: What happens when the faith you were raised with no longer fits? Join us as we explore faith deconstruction and what it looks like to hold on to what matters while letting go of harmful narratives. Our guest, Mary Katherine Backstrom, knows this journey well. Once rooted in evangelical certainty, her world began to unravel—her marriage, career, and faith all shaken. In her raw and hilarious memoir, Not That Wheel Jesus, MK shares what it was like to question everything, wrestle with purity culture's impact, and walk through the grief of lost certainties. As she puts it: “I walked through the rubble, I danced in the fire pits with my friends, and I've emerged into this quiet post-apocalyptic space where I can hear my own voice.” Whether you're navigating your own faith shift or just curious, this conversation will resonate. And don't forget—you can leave us your thoughts at jenhatmaker.com/podcast! Thought-provoking Quotes: “Everybody I speak to that's been on a growth journey of any sort—spiritual, emotional, whatever—you get to a point where you realize that confidence comes from not knowing everything and being at peace with what you can't figure out.” – MK Backstrom “It felt like I was looking at my life and feeling like there's so much loss here, especially my sexuality. My church robbed me of joy. And that's the opposite of what was promised. Once I realized I participated in that behavior, I was able to make amends.” – MK Backstrom “When I walk into that [church] space, it feels like going into a home where a child experienced abuse. I don't know that that's going to leave my body for a very long time. And it doesn't mean that I'm never gonna go back, but I also listen to myself better now and I'm not going to go somewhere where my body feels like it's on fire.” – MK Backstrom “My body is still responding to everything it's experienced for 40 years in the church. And I'm finally getting to the place where I'm starting to understand what my baseline feels like.” – MK Backstrom “If there is a God worth worshiping and there's a life worth living, those things can stand up to your big questions. No God is so fragile that your human curiosity is going to break this to pieces. No problem is so big in your life that you're not gonna get up and keep moving. There's a lot of freedom after the fear. Trust the process, ask questions.” – MK Backstrom Resources Mentioned in This Episode: Holy Hot Mess: Finding God in the Details of this Weird and Wonderful Life by Mary Katherine Backstrom - https://amzn.to/3ZV5GAi Not That Wheel, Jesus!: Stories From a Faith That Went Off-Road in the Best (and Worst) Possible Ways by Mary Katherine Backstrom - https://amzn.to/45KbY9v Rachel Held Evans - https://rachelheldevans.com/ Searching for Sunday: Loving, Leaving, and Finding the Church by Rachel Held Evans - https://amzn.to/4lxKkRY Dallas Willard - https://dwillard.org/ Sarah Bessey - https://www.sarahbessey.com/ Sex MeCourse - https://shop.jenhatmaker.com/products/sex-101 Dr. Celeste Holbrook - https://www.drcelesteholbrook.com/ Guest's Links: Website - https://www.mkbackstrom.com/ Twitter - https://x.com/mkbackstrom Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/MKBackstrom TikTok - https://www.tiktok.com/@marykatherinebackstrom Substack - https://marykatherinebackstrom.substack.com/ Connect with Jen!Jen's Website - https://jenhatmaker.com/ Jen's Instagram - https://instagram.com/jenhatmakerJen's Twitter - https://twitter.com/jenHatmaker/ Jen's Facebook - https://facebook.com/jenhatmakerJen's YouTube - https://www.youtube.com/user/JenHatmaker The For the Love Podcast is presented by Audacy. Patrick welcomes listeners to a hour packed with unexpected turns, heartfelt advice, and real human challenges as he answers questions about faith, the struggle of unanswered prayers, and the pain of homelessness voiced by callers like Rose. Compassion comes through as he connects people with tangible support, tackles fears of returning to confession, and genuinely wrestles with what trust in God looks like in the everyday mess. Florence (email) - How do we know, when we don’t receive, it’s because of a lack of faith or it’s not God’s will? (01:07) Rose - There are many homeless people who are decent people who are on the streets in NJ because of tenant/landlord problems in certain areas. (07:41) Melody - My best friend didn't want to go to Communion because she was afraid as she has just returned to the faith. Should I encourage her to go? (14:31) Annabelle - We pray the Memorare to end abortion. Why don't we pray for adoption and foster care more? Is it right to pray for this person who died? (21:45) Theresa (email) - Doesn't the person who is handling the host and the monstrance have to have consecrated hands and to be a man? Can you clarify for me how and if this is acceptable to the Church's teaching, doctrine or tradition? (34:44) Ozzie - We have a mutual friend who is Pentecostal and said she would go to our service if we went to hers. Is this ok? (40:30) Jim – Confession: Those of us who go regularly, know who the good confessors are. They can make an appointment with the right priest for someone who needs it. (44:25)
Patrick fields honest questions from callers about sin, suffering, and spiritual growth, and responds with scripture, stories of saints, and practical encouragement for families struggling to keep faith alive amid work and changing traditions. He slips in candid thoughts on the Traditional Latin Mass, suggests resources for Protestants considering Catholicism, and offers simple acts of charity for those encountering homelessness, letting each topic flow from personal experience and caller connection. Marion - Does God really punish sin in our personal lives, and as a nation, like in the Old Testament? (01:39) Dennis - The Latin Mass is very holy. I want the Relevant Radio audience to know how holy it is. (12:16) Marie - How do you keep adult children Catholic when you feel them drifting away? How do you not feel resentment to your spouse? (13:16) Robert - A lot of destitute people are in my town. I am retired now and feel bad that I can't do more for these people. I always think of Lazarus and the rich man. I feel terrible. Do you have any advice? (30:30) Andrew (email) – The Walton’s was the first show I can recall on TV that brought up anti-Catholic views on TV (34:30) Steve - Does a person who knows what the Church teaches, but does not convert, be saved? (41:03) Melanie - Confession and Penance: I know a teenager forgot his penance and I also was not given a penance. What do you do when this happens? (48:28)

In the fourth episode of "Holiness," Duane Sheriff teaches that a transformation occurs when you accept Jesus. Your past sinful nature (old man) is crucified and buried, and you become a new creation. You receive a new identity that is righteous and truly holy. When you realize that your old self died with Jesus, you can overcome temptation and truly live in holiness. You are no longer a slave to sin but free to live in the newness of life! https://pastorduane.com/holiness/

A listener named Brittany asks Father Dave about the Eucharistic Prayer. She wonders, “Is there an easy way to know what Eucharist Prayer is going to be used at Saturday night or Sunday Mass? I like to follow along in a prayer book throughout Mass, and I have a hard time at this point figuring out which prayer is being read.”
She was the daughter of Scanderbeg, Albania's national hero. She married Stefan, Prince of Serbia, a kinsman of Scanderbeg who sought refuge in his court. Stefan, a gentle, God-fearing man, had been blinded by the Turkish Sultan. Princess Angelina, loving him despite his loss of his vision and his worldly kingdom, married him with her father's blessing. Together they had two sons, George and John. When their sons were grown, Albania was ravaged by an invasion of the Turks. Stefan, with Angelina and their sons, fled to Italy, where they lived until his repose in 1468. The widowed Angelina buried her husband in his Serbian homeland and devoted her remaining years to good works. Her elder son George gave up his princely title and entered monastic life. John married but died without children in 1503. When Angelina had outlived her two sons as well as her husband she too entered monastic life. She was buried with her sons at Krušedol monastery in northern Serbia. There her miracle-working relics are venerated to this day, and a service is held each year in her memory. She, her husband and her two sons are all glorified as saints of the Church.
Usama Dakdok is the Founder of the Straight Way of Grace Ministry. He is the speaker on the daily radio broadcast Revealing the Truth About Islam. Born and raised in Egypt, Usama learned about Islam just as every other student does in a Muslim country. He also studied for a university degree in Egypt which included the study of Sharia, which is Islamic law. Islam is pushing for world domination. Consider what is happening in France, the UK, Montreal, Canada, and Greece, and also what is being witnessed right here in the United States. A strong contender in the race for mayor of America's largest city, New York City, is a Muslim man who has called for the defunding of police, the very system of public protection to uphold the law, and has refused to condemn "globalize the intifada." This is in a city that has the largest concentration of Jews in the U.S. We also see another Muslim rising up vying to be mayor of Minneapolis. As a matter of fact, just 9 months ago, Voice of America ran a story titled, "Muslim candidates surge in local elections in US." CBN recently ran a story in which they quoted Israel's Minister of Diaspora Affairs, Amichai Chikli, who said, "I think it's very important for Americans to understand that there is a plan of the Muslim Brotherhood. They have a vision, in 100 years, to make America a Muslim state." And yet with the trajectory we are presently on, it will take far less than 100 years for this to happen. We've got many stories to bring to your attention today, all which focus on Islam's push for world domination.

Episode 25:31 A Tribute to A Really Good Man Last week was “one of those weeks” for the entertainment industry. Malcolm-Jamal Warner, Ozzy Osbourne, Hulk Hogan and Chuck Mangione all passed away. And while their deaths received a lot of attention… and deservedly so… there was another man who passed away last week. A man who wasn't famous. A man who wasn't wealthy… at least not by the world's standards. A man who had a tremendous impact on my life. A man who let his actions speak for him. Actions that displayed: 1) His love of God. 2) His love of Church. 3) His love of Family. A man by the name of Cameron Anderson. On this episode I pay tribute to Cameron “Brother” Anderson. Specifically, I share three stories involving Brother Anderson that inspire me to be better. To be more like him. If you like GOOD stories about GOOD people… you'll like this episode. You'll also want to share it with your family and friends
Paul is astonished. The Galatians began with the Spirit, but now they are turning to the law to finish what only God can complete. By pointing to Abraham, Paul reminds them that righteousness has always come through faith. Those who rely on works are under a curse, but Christ became that curse for us so that we might receive the blessing. The Rev. Mitchell Gowen, pastor of Our Savior Lutheran Church in Aiea, HI, joins the Rev. Dr. Phil Booe to study Galatians 3:1–14. To learn more about Our Savior Lutheran, visit oursaviorhawaii.com. There's urgency in Paul's voice. No warm greetings. No slow build. Just a sharp rebuke: “I am astonished that you are so quickly deserting Him who called you.” The stakes are that high. Galatians is Paul's bold stand for the pure Gospel message: Christ crucified and risen, apart from works of the law. When freedom in Christ is threatened by legalism or confused with license, Paul doesn't hold back. He calls the Church back to the cross, to the promise, and to the Spirit. In this series on Thy Strong Word, we walk verse by verse through one of the most foundational and explosive letters in the New Testament. The message is clear: You are justified by faith, not by what you do. Thy Strong Word, hosted by Rev. Dr. Phil Booe, pastor of St. John Lutheran Church of Luverne, MN, reveals the light of our salvation in Christ through study of God's Word, breaking our darkness with His redeeming light. Each weekday, two pastors fix our eyes on Jesus by considering Holy Scripture, verse by verse, in order to be strengthened in the Word and be equipped to faithfully serve in our daily vocations. The notion that man is meant to become divine may strike the modern mind as madness—and indeed, it is—but it is a divine madness, a holy paradox at the very heart of Christianity. The Church does not merely say that man should be good, or even that he should be better; she dares to say that he is called to be like God. Not in pride, as the serpent whispered, but in humility. Through the astonishing mercy of a God who stooped so low as to become man, so that man might be lifted to the heights of and become like Him. It is not that our humanity is abolished, but that it is completed, transfigured. The carpenter from Nazareth builds not only tables, but saints. --- Help Spread the Good News --- Father Brian's homilies are shared freely thanks to generous listeners like you.
