“Many people with autism gravitate toward leadership because of the traits and values of our culture… We're born leaders because we're born to see world-building vision.” Today, we are joined by autistic advocate and host of the Autistic Culture Podcast, Dr. Angela Kingdon. Angela drops a science/history lesson, a ton of pop culture references, and some much-needed thoughts on neurodiversity in the workplace and leadership.Listen in to find out:- What Angela's learned about herself and this awesome community since being diagnosed in 2012.- Why understanding the things neurodivergent folks have to know about themselves (to accommodate their environments) would benefit 100% of people, neurodivergent or not.- The horrifying story of why we don't use the term Asperger's anymore.- Why leaders must develop cultural literacy around differences (aside from the fact that it benefits them too).- Some great anecdotes about autistic people, inventions, and culture.“Autistics have been around forever – they created the first stone tools, but it wasn't a label or diagnosis until 1943.”“Taylor Swift and her great aunt, Emily Dickinson, are both perfect examples of autistic traits.”“When people are neurotypical, they're so used to assuming their way is the way. One-size-fits-all isn't real, and that does need to shift.”—Dr. Angela Kingdon is a dynamic autistic advocate, author, and speaker, renowned for her impactful work in promoting neurodiversity and supporting autistic individuals. As the host of the Autistic Culture Podcast, Angela shares her experiences and insights as a late-diagnosed autistic person, aiming to create a more inclusive and understanding society.Angela's journey began with a diagnosis at the age of 39, which she describes as a turning point that allowed her to embrace her unique neurodiverse perspective fully. Her advocacy extends beyond her professional work. She actively engages with audiences through social media platforms and her podcast, sharing her story and encouraging others to understand and embrace neurodiversity. Kids born in our morally turbulent age, and the parents committed to guiding them through it, have precious few resources that can help them sift through the chaos. A few years ago, WORLD Magazine, a longtime Christian worldview partner of the Colson Center, added a daily news program for kids to their already impressive lineup of print and digital resources. The tagline for WORLD Watch with host Brian Basham reads: “We can't keep your kids from growing up too quickly, but we can help them grow into humans equipped with news literacy and Biblical discernment. And make it fun, too.” It's tempting and often appropriate to shield our kids from what's going on. But even if that were possible all the time, we need to help them face now what they will face when they are no longer in our homes. Rather than hide them, let's guide our children to think well in this time and place where God has called them to serve Him.

The serious study of history has been abandoned by fanatics, whose fever dreams of oppression and marginalization can only thrive in ignorance. Only the restoration of systematically teaching the histories of Western Civilization and the United States can preserve freedom in an independent United States of America. In many of today's K-12 schools as well as in most universities, the serious study of history has been abandoned. It is this very story of how we have striven to make our world better that the fanatics among us wish to erase. Their fever dreams of oppression and marginalization can only thrive in an ignorance of the true nature of our past. Only the restoration of systematically teaching the histories of Western Civilization and the United States can stop these would-be social engineers. Only active, aware, and determined citizens can restore history to our schools and by doing so preserve freedom in an independent United States of America.Would you like to share your thoughts with Ralph? There are so many ways for children to learn, but too often, conventional education in America confines students to specific eurocentric writing, reading, and arithmetic methodologies that have proven to be largely ineffective for quite some time now, especially when zooming in on educational experiences of Black and brown children in America. In this episode, we're speaking with the founder of the Canady Foundation for The Arts, Marjuan Canady. She is an award-winning Caribbean-American artist, entrepreneur, educator, and literacy advocate. Marjuan carries us through her personal journey as a storyteller and performer from her childhood, as a native Washingtonian, all the way to the present day. We discuss the importance of culturally sound literacy for children of color, and how her series of children's books called “Callaloo Kids” contributes to the dire need for more of it. Marjuan drops boatloads of wisdom on African American theatre history, the importance of creative arts programs in schools, the grand effect that reading to children has on their overall development as influential members of society, and how the creative arts can play a key role in helping Black and brown children discover who they are and act on it with authenticity and freedom, no matter what career path they choose in the future. Marjuan has fifteen years of arts education experience, instructing youth from pre-school to college levels. Her original work has been seen at The John F. Kennedy Center, Sesame Street, The Smithsonian, and the Caribbean Cultural Center African Diaspora Institute, to name a few. So if you've been wondering: How to teach your child to read How to get a child to read when they refuse Why is cultural literacy important How to start a drama club or bring theatre to your child's school Or how to stimulate creativity in children ... Then you're going to LOVE this episode because it answers all of those questions and so many more. Reading Time: < 1 minute Can our schools explicitly teach pupils skills, and how do they become speech communities? Our 94th interview is with Eric Donald Hirsch, an American educator and academic literary critic. Founder of the Core Knowledge Foundation, Hirsch is most known in the U.K. for his work on cultural literacy. In this podcast, listen to E. D. […]
About Professor ED Hirsch He is professor emeritus of education and humanities at the University of Virginia. In the 1960s Hirsch's Validity in Interpretation made an important contribution to contemporary literary theory and established him as "the founder of contemporary intentionalism," defending the notion of objectivity in humanistic studies and distinguishing between the "meaning" of a text, which relates to understanding and does not change, and its "significance", which relates to explanation and changes over time. In popular culture Hirsch is best known for his work on cultural literacy, and is the founder and chairman of the Core Knowledge Foundation. Beginning in 1990s, Hirsch began publishing books in the Core Knowledge Grader Series which the Foundation describes as "an engaging, illustrated guide to the essential knowledge outlined in the Core Knowledge Sequence" including information and activities for teachers, parents and children, as well as suggestions for related readings and resources. There are currently eight books in print, beginning with What Your Preschooler Needs to Know and ending with What Your Sixth Grader Needs to Know. The books have been particularly popular with parents who homeschool, as well as parents whose children attend Core Knowledge schools, and have been revised and updated over the years. In How to Educate a Citizen, E.D. Hirsch continues the conversation he began thirty years ago with his classic bestseller Cultural Literacy, urging America’s public schools, particularly at the elementary level, to educate our children more effectively to help heal and preserve the nation. Since the 1960s, our schools have been relying on “child-centered learning.” History, geography, science, civics, and other essential knowledge have been dumbed down by vacuous learning “techniques” and “values-based” curricula; indoctrinated by graduate schools of education, administrators and educators have believed they are teaching reading and critical thinking skills. Yet these cannot be taught in the absence of strong content, Hirsch argues. The consequence is a loss of shared knowledge that would enable us to work together, understand one another, and make coherent, informed decisions. A broken approach to school not only leaves our children under-prepared and erodes the American dream but also loosens the spiritual bonds and unity that hold the nation together. Drawing on early schoolmasters and educational reformers such as Noah Webster and Horace Mann, Hirsch charts the rise and fall of the American early education system and provides a blueprint for closing the national gap in knowledge, communications, and allegiance. Critical and compelling, How to Educate a Citizen galvanizes our schools to equip children with the power of shared knowledge. Available here: https://www.johncattbookshop.com/how-to-educate-a-citizen-the-power-of-shared-knowledge-to-unify-a-nation #teacher5aday Martyn Reah is in conversation with Abigail Mann in our regular spotlight on wellbeing
Part I of our investigation of Cultural Literacy features Dr. Anika Prather, professor of Classics at Howard University and founder of Living Water School, who will help us explore the importance of cultural literacy as Americans, as Christians, and as people of goodwill from various diverse backgrounds. In addition, Dr. Prather, a proud African American educator, wife, and mother of three, will evaluate current trends that threaten to "cancel" the Western Canon of the Great Books, and she will underscore the importance of a traditional Liberal Arts education. Part II will feature Dr. Dave Deavel from the University of St. Thomas.
Cultural Literacy & Cultural Disintegration: Seth discusses the current rage on the streets, and in our universities and classrooms, as reflective of the progressive campaign to eradicate our common culture. Peggy Noonan's column suggesting President Trump not fill the open Supreme Court seat now. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
E. D. Hirsch Jr. began his career as a literary theorist. As a result of this work, he became aware of the importance of background knowledge for reading comprehension. However, when he looked to the education system, he found knowledge was undervalued. Since then, he has worked to highlight the importance of knowledge though his numerous books, including the best-selling Cultural Literacy, and the Core Knowledge Foundation that he set-up to further these aims by developing the Core Knowledge Sequence, now used in many schools in the US and beyond. In this episode, Don talks to Greg Ashman about knowledge, education, the importance of a 'speech community' and commonality more generally, as well as his new book, How to Educate a Citizen.

Click here for episode transcript: https://bit.ly/2S6u9zo-htz-4 The God of the Bible is unique, not only as Creator, but as Trinity: we worship One God who exists eternally in three Persons, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Choosing words to describe this reality is difficult; after all, there’s nothing else just like God. So, we rely on the words of Scripture summarized very carefully in the historical creeds, which were developed in extensive, Scriptural study and debate. But the question is anything but coldly academic: in this episode we discuss how our salvation depends on the personal and interpersonal nature of the triune God. This episode features: No More Mormon Jokes, the Great Puritan Theologian John Milton, the Dark Side of the Force, Be Good and Don’t Run with Scissors and Other Lessons from the Historical Jesus, Emily’s Appalling Lack of Cultural Literacy, and the SHOCKING TRUTH: What Really Happened at the Council of Nicea? Athanasian Creed (excerpt on the Trinity) 21. The Father is made of none, neither created nor begotten. 22. The Son is of the Father alone; not made nor created, but begotten. 23. The Holy Spirit is of the Father and of the Son; neither made, nor created, nor begotten, but proceeding. 24. So there is one Father, not three Fathers; one Son, not three Sons; one Holy Spirit, not three Holy Spirits. 25. And in this Trinity none is afore or after another; none is greater or less than another. 26. But the whole three persons are coeternal, and coequal. 27. So that in all things, as aforesaid, the Unity in Trinity and the Trinity in Unity is to be worshipped. 28. He therefore that will be saved must thus think of the Trinity. In 1989, homeschool curriculum programs were few and far between; parents had to assemble products piecemeal, and this problem was far worse overseas. However, Sarita Holzmann decided to help by creating book lists for parents living abroad and then shipping those books to them, all before Amazon and the modern Internet. Fast-forward to present day: Sarita is the co-founder of successful homeschool curriculum brands (https://www.sonlight.com/). The book selections are superb, and we especially enjoy the global focus. In this episode, Sarita shares how books help expand a child’s perspective of the world and how she chooses the 300+ books she reviews each year. How important is passion? The place of Love across cultures In this episode of Better Sex, Dr. Sara Nasserzadeh unwraps her theory of love in two categories: submergent and emergent. She describes the difference between the two and how cultures have different expectations about love and passion. She dissects each journey and love cycle as people typically experience it. She shares an interesting find about successful couples having the foundation right, then letting the love emerge. The question of love from friendship comes up. Tune in to learn what Dr. Sara thinks about this and what the defining factors are for a harmonious relationship. The Sharp Orange Color We chat about the yearning people have for each other (playfully labeled as the Sharp orange color by Dr. Sara). She shares the impact of a healthy foundation once the orange color phase has passed. Her beautiful description for this is a rainbow kind of love. Join in to hear the secret of a rainbow relationship, it's ingredients and why it works. Differences in culture After discussing her thoughts on arranged marriages, Dr. Sara outlines the different competencies that rank as priorities in different social or cultural contexts. The different perceptions of relationships are brought up for western cultures as we discuss the fantasies people adopt as ‘normal.' Daily findings and advice Dr. Sara offers some advice for submergent types of relationships that want to try and build an emergent type of love. “Language is the least effective way to communicate with someone” - a belief Dr. Saras shares before she dives into analyzing what couples do when they ‘spend' time together. She has an interesting way of re-branding relationships once couples walk through her door. She touches on the questions couples bring up, the hurt and the past and shares her method around that to ensure couples still move forward. Sex across cultures You won't want to miss Dr. Sara's findings on sex and its reflection of power as well as its weight in relationships. EW Group MD Rachael Wilson hosts demographic change expert Aaqil Ahmed for a special event in London to discuss the business opportunities for growth that are linked to changing customer demographics. This special episode was recorded live in front of an audience at Henry Wood House in London. Aaqil is the former Head of Religion and Ethics at the BBC and Commissioning Editor at Channel 4, and is now a Professor of Media at the University of Bolton. He specialises in working with businesses to pinpoint new opportunities to expand their reach in response to demographic change and the increasing need for cultural literacy. "Cultural literacy comes from understanding the basics of what somebody believes in, and how they live their life, and therefore understanding that there may be certain things that they may do differently that we have to find a way of making it work. That may be in the language we would use as broadcasters, or the way we would try and sell or position ourselves as businesses to those people." Aaqil Ahmed Aaqil offers up a number of real-life case studies from the media, FMCG and retail sectors around building cultural literacy and awareness, especially around religion and faith. These include the M&S Modest fashion range, Nike Pro Hijab, and how Bicester Village has developed its East Asian and Gulf Arab customer bases. In 1987, E.D. Hirsch sparked a national debate with his book "Cultural Literacy," claiming that there is a foundation of common knowledge every American should know - and codifying it in a list of 5,000 facts and cultural references. Today, amidst giant demographic and social shifts, the United States needs such common knowledge more than ever. But a 21st century sense of cultural literacy has to be radically more diverse and inclusive. And it needs to come not from one person but from all of us. Eric Liu, executive director of the Aspen Institute Citizen and American Identity Program, asks Anne-Marie Slaughter (president of New America), Jose Antonio Vargas (Pulitzer Prize-winning author), and Hirsh what they think it means to be American.
