“The part that I enjoy the most about it is seeing athletes through from goal creation to looking at a year plan and then getting into the nitty gritty of individual workouts. What systems they're working on to develop aerobic and develop your muscular that you need for the demands of whatever your goal is. I love that whole process of it.”Joedy Dalke and coaching have gone together quite naturally over the years. He's coached various activities to different crowds and once he gained the knowledge and experience on the trails, coaching trail runners through Attitude over Altitude was another natural step. He loves the opportunity to connect and support athletes as they work towards their goals and he loves gathering groups and watching them progress. This is why he enjoys his “Pain Train” Thursday night runs so much. Pain Train hosts runners for various work outs and he loves watching runners get stronger over time. It's a point of pride for the Calgary coach. “I just see these athletes doing these workouts week by week, and I see the improvements, and often they don't really see it. But it's a really cool experience for me to be guiding them through the workouts and then seeing that fitness develop or the skill develop on technical trails or whatever it is and be able to let them know like, “hey, by the way, you're really improving.” And sometimes people just don't know until they're told.”Joedy was a ton of fun to chat with. I loved hearing why he enjoys Calgary so much and how much joy it brings him to work with athletes. You can learn more about his coaching at the Attitude over Altitude website and see his YouTube channel here. I hope you enjoy the chat as much as I did, let us know what you think!Alberta Trail Running Film Festival tickets availableI'm incredibly excited to be able to hang out with more of you and share the film festival vibes. On the version of Hot off the Wire posted Oct. 24 at 7 a.m. CT: RAFAH, Gaza Strip (AP) — 85-year-old Yocheved Lifshitz, one of two Israelis freed by Hamas on Monday, spoke of her captivity. Appearing weak in a wheelchair and speaking softly, Lifshitz told reporters Tuesday that the militants beat her with sticks, bruising her ribs and making it hard to breathe as they kidnapped her. Lifshitz, whose husband remains a hostage, said conditions were kept clean and she received medical care, including medication. PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — An off-duty pilot riding in the cockpit of a Horizon Air passenger jet tried to shut down the engines in midflight. It happened Sunday on a flight from Everett, Washington, to San Francisco. The plane diverted to Portland, Oregon, where it was met by law enforcement officers. Alaska Airlines, which owns Horizon, said Monday that the crew reported “a credible security threat related to an authorized occupant in the flight deck jump seat" — one of its pilots, who was off duty. Authorities in Oregon identified the man as Joseph David Emerson. The Multnomah County Sheriff's Office says he is being held on 83 counts each of attempted murder and reckless endangerment and one count of endangering an aircraft. BERLIN (AP) — German authorities say two cargo ships have collided in the North Sea off the German coast and one vessel apparently sank. One sailor died and four are missing. Germany's Central Command for Maritime Emergencies said the ships, Polesie and Verity, collided early on Tuesday morning about 22 kilometers, about 14 miles, southwest of the island of Helgoland. One of the ships, the British-flagged Verity, is believed to have sunk. Two sailors were rescued. Vessels supporting the rescue effort included a cruise ship that has doctors on board and could treat people if needed. DENVER (AP) — A former National Security Agency employee from Colorado has pleaded guilty to trying to sell classified information to Russia. Under a plea agreement approved by a federal judge on Monday, prosecutors agreed to not ask for more than about 22 years in prison for 31-year-old Jareh Sebastian Dalke if he follows the terms of the deal. He will be sentenced in April, but the judge will ultimately decide the sentence. The Army veteran faces up to a possible life sentence for allegedly giving the information to an undercover FBI agent who prosecutors say Dalke believed was a Russian agent. The Rangers are going to the World Series, the Diamondbacks and Phillies are going to a game 7 in the NLCS, Kirk Cousins leads the Vikings to a win, and Giannis Antetokounmpo agrees to an extension with the Bucks. Correspondent Chuck Freimund reports. On the version of Hot off the Wire posted Oct. 23 at 4 p.m. CT: RAFAH, Gaza Strip (AP) — The International Committee of the Red Cross says Hamas militants have released two hostages it had been holding captive in the Gaza Strip. It was the second time the group has freed hostages seized in its bloody Oct. 7 cross-border incursion into Israel. The hostages were identified by Israeli media as Yocheved Lifshitz and Nurit Cooper of the Israeli kibbutz of Nir Oz. A U.S. official said Monday that Washington has advised Israel to delay a possible ground invasion to allow more time to try and secure the release of more hostages. Palestinian officials and witnesses say heavy airstrikes across Gaza demolished buildings, killing hundreds of people. DETROIT (AP) — Investigators say they have identified several people of interest in the fatal stabbing of a Detroit synagogue president. Authorities found 40-year-old Samantha Woll's body outside her home early Saturday. Detroit Police Chief James E. White said during a news conference Monday that Woll attended a wedding Friday night and left the celebration around 12:30 a.m. He says there was no sign that anyone forced their way into her home. He says investigators have identified a number of people of interest, but that they believe a suspect acted alone. Woll led the Isaac Agree Downtown Synagogue. Police have repeatedly said they found no evidence that her killing was motivated by antisemitism. WASHINGTON (AP) — The White House says the dozens of U.S. technology hubs President Joe Biden is announcing will help communities across the country become centers of innovation critical to its competitiveness. Biden is designating 31 technology hubs that reach 32 states and Puerto Rico. The tech hubs are designed to help spur innovation in industries concentrated in these areas and to create jobs. The Democratic president announced the tech hubs Monday. The tech hubs are the result of a process the Commerce Department launched in May for cities to share $500 million in grants. The hubs tie into Biden's economic message that people should able to find good jobs wherever they live. CONCORD, N.H. (AP) — A man who was living in a tent in the woods has been convicted of murder in the fatal shooting of a retired New Hampshire couple who were out for a walk. After deliberating for a day and a half, the jury on Monday found 27-year-old Logan Clegg guilty of second-degree murder in the April 2022 killings of Stephen and Djeswende Reid. They were killed while walking on a trail near their apartment in Concord. Clegg lived near the trail. He was arrested in Vermont in October 2022. His lawyers said he left the state because he was hiding from police due to a probation violation, not because of the Reids' deaths. Clegg faces up to life in prison. NEW YORK (AP) — U.S. Sen. Bob Menendez of New Jersey has returned to a New York City federal court and entered a not guilty plea to a charge alleging he conspired to act as an agent of the Egyptian government. The Democratic former chair of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee entered the plea on Monday. Menendez stepped down from his powerful post on the Senate committee after he was criminally charged last month with other conspiracy counts. Those charges allege Menendez and his wife accepted bribes from three New Jersey businessmen in exchange for his assistance. Menendez has vowed to prove his innocence. MILLEN, Ga. (AP) — A body found wrapped in plastic inside a Georgia dumpster 35 years ago has been identified as that of a South Korean woman. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation said Monday that they used DNA analysis to determine that 26-year-old Chong Un Kim was the person whose body was discovered in rural Millen in February 1988. Kim died from asphyxiation, but it's unclear whether someone killed her or who dumped her body. Investigators say Kim lived for several years in Hinesville, 70 miles south of Millen. Her body was found wrapped with plastic inside a suitcase. Investigators say Kim had been dead four to seven days when her body was found. KEY WEST, Fla. (AP) — A decade after swimming nonstop for more than two straight days from Cuba to Florida, Diana Nyad has returned to the Key West beach where she completed her epic journey. Nyad and her former support team helped mark the swim's 10th anniversary Sunday by helping return a rehabilitated sea turtle to the Atlantic. Nearly 2,000 people had lined the beach on Labor Day 2013 to welcome Nyad as she came ashore after swimming for 52 hours and 54 minutes across the Florida Straits from Havana — a distance of 111 miles. She succeeded on her fifth attempt at the age of 64. PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Federal authorities have unsealed charges against four men in the theft earlier this year of more than 2 million dimes from a tractor-trailer that had picked up the coins from the U.S. Mint in Philadelphia. Authorities have said the driver was bound for Miami on April 13 when he pulled into a parking lot to sleep. They say thieves raided the truck overnight, stealing a portion of the $750,000 in dimes — a shipment weighing six tons. The heist left thousands of coins scattered over the lot. The Philadelphia Inquirer reports four defendants face conspiracy, robbery, theft of government money and other charges that were unsealed Monday. The United Auto Workers union has once again escalated its strikes against Detroit Three automakers, this time adding a factory that makes Ram pickup trucks for Stellantis. The union says in a statement that 6,800 members walked out Monday morning at the Sterling Heights, Michigan, Assembly Plant, a huge profit center for the company. The move came just three days after union President Shawn Fain reported progress in talks with General Motors and Stellantis but said the companies will have to make better offers. No progress was reported with Ford. The union went on strike Sept. 15 at one assembly plant from each company. About 40,800 workers are now on strike against all three automakers. MANILA, Philippines (AP) — The United States has renewed a warning that it would defend the Philippines in case of an armed attack after Chinese ships blocked and collided with two Filipino vessels in the South China Sea. Philippine diplomats summoned a Chinese Embassy official in Manila on Monday for a strongly worded protest following Sunday's collisions off Second Thomas Shoal, which is also claimed by China. No injuries were reported but the Philippine ships reported damage. China has blamed the Philippines for the collisions saying the vessels were carrying construction materials to strengthen the Philippine outpost at the shoal. The Philippines and other neighbors of China have resisted Beijing's sweeping territorial claims over virtually the entire South China Sea. COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — Anti-abortion groups seeking to build opposition to a reproductive rights measure in Ohio are messaging heavily around a term for an abortion procedure that hasn't been legal in the U.S. for over 15 years. The opposition campaign and top Republicans increasingly reference partial-birth abortions in ads, debates and public statements. The abortion opponents say partial-birth abortions are an imminent threat if voters approve the constitutional amendment Nov. 7. Partial-birth abortion is a non-medical term for a federally prohibited procedure known as dilation and extraction. Abortion rights group Pro-Choice Ohio says talk of partial-birth abortions is a scare tactic. Constitutional scholars say the amendment would not override the existing federal ban if Ohio voters approve it. Patty Loveless, Bob McDill and Tanya Tucker were inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame on Sunday in Nashville.  —The Associated Press About this program Host Terry Lipshetz is a senior producer for Lee Enterprises. Can You Secure Security Cameras? The Coming Green Energy Nightmare - Email Scams Hitting Businesses and Lonely Hearts Scams… Eight questions to ask yourself before getting a security camera https://www.welivesecurity.com/2022/10/03/8-questions-ask-yourself-getting-home-security-camera/ Security cameras were once the preserve of the rich and famous. Now anyone can get their hands on one thanks to technological advances. The advent of the Internet of Things (IoT) has created a significant new market – for manufacturers of devices like connected doorbells and baby monitors and more sophisticated whole-of-property systems. Connected to home Wi-Fi networks, these devices allow owners to watch live video footage, record video for later, and receive alerts when out of the house. Yet these same features can also expose households to new risks if the camera is compromised and the footage is leaked. Not all vendors have as big a focus on security and privacy as they should. That means you need to ask the right questions before starting. ++++++++ Romance scammer and BEC fraudster sent to prison for 25 years https://nakedsecurity.sophos.com/2022/10/04/romance-scammer-and-bec-fraudster-sent-to-prison-for-25-years/ Elvis Eghosa Ogiekpolor was jailed for 25 years in Atlanta, Georgia, for running a cybercrime group that scammed close to $10,000,000 in under two years from individuals and businesses caught up in the so-called romance and BEC scams. BEC is short for business email compromise, an umbrella term for a form of online scam in which the attackers acquire login access to email accounts inside a company so that the fraudulent emails they send don't just seem to come from the company they're attacking, but do come from there. ++++++++ How a deepfake Mark Ruffalo scammed half a million dollars from a lonely heart https://grahamcluley.com/how-a-deepfake-mark-ruffalo-scammed-half-a-million-dollars-from-a-lonely-heart/ The Asahi Shimbun reports that 74-year-old Manga artist Chikae Ide received an unsolicited message via Facebook in February 2018 from somebody claiming to be Ruffalo. With help from some translation software, an initially skeptical Ide responded to the Hollywood actor, attaching a photograph of herself. An American friend of Ide subsequently questioned whether the person claiming to be Ruffalo was genuine, noting that he wrote: “like somebody who has not learned English.” But, says Ide, a 30-second video call blew away any suspicions. “I'm sure it was Mark himself behind the screen chatting with me,” Ide said. Energy… The Coming Green Electricity Nightmare https://wattsupwiththat.com/2022/10/02/the-coming-green-electricity-nightmare/ What this net-zero transition would require: How many millions of wind turbines, billions of solar panels, billions of EVs, backup batteries, millions of transformers, thousands of miles of transmission lines – sprawling across millions of acres of wildlife habitat, scenic and agricultural lands, and people's once-placid backyards? To cite just one example, just the 2,500 wind turbines needed for New York electricity (30,000 megawatts) would require nearly 110,000 tons of copper – which would necessitate mining, crushing, processing, and refining 25 million tons of copper ore … after removing some 40 million tons of overlying rock to reach the ore bodies. Multiply that times 50 states – and the entire world – plus transmission lines. Spooks… FLASHBACK: CIA Sabotaged Soviet Pipeline to Europe in 1982 - US Software Caused Massive Explosion in Siberian Pipeline Seen From Space https://www.thegatewaypundit.com/2022/10/flashback-cia-sabotaged-soviet-pipeline-europe-1982-us-software-caused-massive-explosion-siberian-pipeline-seen-space/ Back in 1982, the CIA sabotaged a Soviet pipeline in Siberia. US software caused a gas pipeline explosion so large it could be seen in space. The Americans did not want the Europeans to purchase Soviet gas. In January 1982, President Ronald Reagan approved a CIA plan to sabotage the economy of the Soviet Union through covert transfers of technology that contained hidden malfunctions, including software that later triggered a massive explosion in a Siberian natural gas pipeline, according to a memoir by a Reagan White House official. ++++++++ Former NSA Employee Faces Death Penalty for Selling Secrets https://www.darkreading.com/attacks-breaches/ex--nsa-employee-faces-death-penalty-for-selling-secrets When he left his job as an information systems security designer with the National Security Agency, Jareh Sebastian Dalke allegedly took a few classified documents with him. Stealing — and then attempting to sell — those secret government documents could land the Colorado Springs man on death row. Dalke has been charged with trying to sell those government secrets to a foreign government. But, according to a Department of Justice affidavit, the sale went bust when it turned out the potential buyer Dalke believed was an emissary from a foreign nation was an undercover FBI agent. Hackers… Ransomware 3.0: The Next Frontier https://www.darkreading.com/vulnerabilities-threats/ransomware-3-the-next-frontier The Federal Bureau of Investigation's Internet Crime Complaint Center received 3,729 complaints identified as ransomware in 2021, up 82% from just two years prior and accelerating. According to the Department of Treasury, the top 10 ransomware gangs raked at least $5.2 billion in extortion payments. Ransomware's growth and sheer scale captured leaders' attention in policy and business, but we must keep our eye on how its operators might adapt and evolve to protect their profits. ++++++++ Russian Hackers Take Aim at Kremlin Targets https://www.infosecurity-magazine.com/news/russian-hackers-take-aim-at/ According to a new report, Russian threat actors have begun launching cyber-attacks at targets inside their country in retaliation for what they see as a needless war with Ukraine. The Kyiv Post claimed to have spoken to members of the National Republican Army (NRA), a Russian hacking outfit working towards overthrowing the Putin regime. ++++++++ Relentless Russian Cyberattacks on Ukraine Raise Important Policy Questions https://www.darkreading.com/threat-intelligence/russian-cyberattacks-ukraine-raise-important-policy-questions The cyber picture worsened as the war went on because critical infrastructure and systems used to support the war effort ended up in the crosshairs. Soon after the onset of the physical invasion, Microsoft found that it could also correlate cyberattacks in the critical infrastructure sector with kinetic events. For example, as the Russian campaign moved around the Donbas region in March, researchers observed coordinated wiper attacks against transportation logistics systems used for military movement and the delivery of humanitarian aid. And they are targeting nuclear facilities in Ukraine with cyber activity to soften a target before military incursions, which Microsoft researchers have consistently seen throughout the war.

Coach Hybl talks about what making Sooners successful this golf season, past All Americans, Sooner culture and more college golf talk! It took Ryan Hybl little time to return the Oklahoma men's golf program to national prominence. Named OU head coach on June 22, 2009, Hybl took over a program that finished 10th in the 2009 Big 12 Championship and inside the top nine just once that spring, and has guided it to the four best single-season scoring averages in school history and to the NCAA Championships each of the last eight years. In fact, OU is one of just three teams to reach the national tournament in each of the past eight years, joining Illinois and Texas. Hybl has coached 10 Sooners to All-America recognition. Abraham Ancer was an honorable mention All-American in 2010-11 and Will Kropp earned the same acclaim in 2011-12. In 2014-15, a pair of Sooners grabbed the honor in Michael Gellerman (third team) and Grant Hirschman (honorable mention). The following season, Max McGreevy was named a third-team All-American. After the Sooners claimed the 2017 national title, McGreevy, Hirschman, Brad Dalke and Blaine Hale all earned honorable mention honors. In 2018, Quade Cummins, Dalke, Hale and Hirschman secured All-America honors. In 2019, Patrick Welch and Garett Reband were named All-Americans bringing Hybl's total to 10 players garnering 18 All-America honors.

Getting the lingo downNote: tons of great content similar to this can be found via InterAct.Intersex: term used for a variety of conditions in which someone is born with urologic, reproductive or sexual anatomy that doesn't fit the binary definitions of female or male. Differences of sex development or DSD: The medical community's umbrella term for a handfull of medical diagnosis where a biological characteristic or anatomical structure does not meet binary definitions of male or female. Not all folks with a DSD diagnosis claim intersex as an identity! One last point: who does and doesn't identify as intersex is always political. It's often based on how people receive the medical framing of the diagnosis. Some intersex advocates expect that in a few years' time, calling intersex a DSD condition will sound like calling someone's gender identity or sexual orientation, a psychological condition. Anatomic variations: a big-picture viewThe overall incidence of any variant of sex development is estimated to be as high as 1.7% of the population (others make lower estimates). This is as common as folks with naturally red hair. These variations can show up on a few different biologic levelsGenetic: e.g. Kleinfelter syndrome and Turner syndromeHormonal: e.g. congenital adrenal hyperplasia or androgen insensitivity syndromeBecause we talk a lot about AIS in this episode, here's some more detail: it's a condition where individuals have XY chromosomes. But the receptor for testosterone has a slightly different shape, so testosterone doesn't dock at the receptor. So the organs and structures formed by testosterone signaling are not there. Anatomic: e.g. gonadal dysgenesis (the gonads - or testes or ovary precursors don't form) Variations can be discovered at different time points throughout someone's lifeGenetic screening or fetal ultrasoundTime of birthChildhood, often while investigating a hernia or abdominal massDuring unrelated abdominal surgery, where sometimes undeveloped gonads are foundAs part of the medical workup when someone who expects to get pregnant cannotThe role of hormones within intersex careThe biology of hormonesBody shape, voice, hair growth and distribution, bone strength, muscle development - these all depend on hormones (like testosterone and estrogen) In binary individuals, these hormones appear around age 5 or 6 and increase around puberty. How does this relate to healthcare for intersex individuals?TL;DR: it depends on the individual. There is no set regimen or hormone therapy for someone based on a particular DSD variation. Some individuals with an intersex condition identify as a gender other than that assigned to them by the time of puberty. Hormone therapy can help alleviate the distress which some folks may feel about their body, and help them achieve their desired form of gender expression. As a reminder: just because someone is intersex doesn't mean they are transgender.Hot take: having the correct amount of hormones for the gender and body that you wish to have is very important.Shifting paradigms of clinical care for intersex folksFor many years, the medical community routinely practiced non-disclosure with intersex patientsThe basic idea behind non-disclosure: clinicians purposefully choose to NOT tell an intersex individual about their variation. The person in question will instead be socialized as either male or female (based on whichever gender “made more sense” given their anatomy). The ideology supporting the practice of nondisclosure goes back to the 1950s, when a psychiatrist named John Money at Johns Hopkins said nurture would always override nature. Why we don't like it: Non-disclosure forces intersex individuals to conform to rigid societal standards, compared with the driving principles of medicine, which are beneficence, autonomy, and justice. Also, clinicians should avoid lying to their patients and should instead tell them the entire truth about their bodyNon-disclosure is (thankfully) falling out of favor, instead replaced by the notion of shared decision making when it comes to clinical care for people with intersex traits or DSD In 2006, a consensus statement came out saying that patients with DSD variations and their families should be told the full truth. This was affirmed again in 2016 update.Though as Dr. Dalke points out, this movement away from non-disclosure is itself a relatively recent and, frankly, radical evolution in care Care for intersex folks: areas for improvementThe language and framework that clinicians use when talking about anatomic variationsMedical language can (and should) present the specific biology of intersex folks in a way that isn't pathologizingFor example, DSDs can be framed as variations - just like red hair vs. blond or brown. (Can you tell we are obsessed with red hair?) Clinicians can partner with their patients to help them find whatever language feels most affirming to themThe assumptions made by the healthcare system about people's bodies, anatomy, sex, and gender Some examples: health forms that only list binary gender options, clinicians that assume a female-presenting individual can become pregnantAn aside to say that these assumptions are damaging for others, too – people who are trans and non-binary and people who have had organs like their breasts, uterus, or testicles removed because of cancerThe physical examA person's body and biology aren't a spectator sportPlease, kick trainees out of the room!Ok, so what does it feel like when things are patient-centered?Patients should feel as if they are in control of every decision that's made in their care. A provider who's really trauma informed is going to check to make sure that a person is giving consent to every aspect of a clinical encounter. A person should feel empowered to say no to something or anything at any point during a clinical encounter or clinical decision making and not feel as though they're doing something wrong or they're going to be punished by the healthcare provider for this.Again, language matters: diagnosis and identityMaria, our community voice, says it best: For most of my life it was a diagnosis and it felt like a diagnosis and I felt different. I just felt different. When I found out I had XY chromosomes, that kind of took me in a new direction - when at your core, you're like, am I a boy? What is a boy? It made me question everything about my identity. And I felt like I sort of started at the bottom to build back up what my identity looks like and where my gender and my sexual orientation, my gender identity, where that all fits in.
