Greetings Glocal Citizens! This week's episode and herstory really hit close to home. We recorded this interview on Ghana's Independence Day (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VJ9ZcXEXOh0), March 6th--or 6th March as we say in Ghana. And while days like this are meant to be celebrations of freedom and recognition of the work and struggles that went into the founding of the republic, my enthusiasm was half-hearted. If Africa, Africans and all people of the African Diaspora are honest with ourselves we have to accept that decolonization is an unfinished job. There is work to do. I, like my guest this week accept it and for me, I am reminded and empowered to ramp up the why of Glocal Citizens and my passion for manifesting a new world. After ten years of practicing mainly criminal defense and making Nashville history as a judicial campaign manager, Courtney Teasley decided she didn't want to wait until the next election to continue creating the change she wanted to see; she wanted more change, way faster. Now, she has converted her law practice into a full, PROACTIVE coaching and consulting firm where she can assist lawyers in starting their own criminal defense law practices with a trajectory to the bench, as well as train the community on how to represent themselves with a lawyer present by providing strategic defense case preparation.  In episode 403 of the Fraternity Foodie Podcast, we will find out why Courtney decided to attend Middle Tennessee State University for her undergraduate experience, why Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. was the right sorority, what made her want to go to law school, what it's been like to have her own criminal defense law firm for the last 10 years, how Courtney was so successful as campaign manager for Khadija Babb, the youngest person ever elected as Criminal Court Judge in Nashville at the age of 35, how her books are critical for those disproportionately affected by the criminal justice system, how we're going to end mass incarceration in this country, how we make a mindset shift from poverty to financial literacy, how we can ignite the activism of the world, and what are the types of organizations that Courtney has promoted that are proactively disrupting. On the latest episode of The Confidence Restored Podcast by CC: America host, Tomeria Jordan, interviews the founders of The Fortitude Collective whose mission is to create a space for the next generation of black and brown women that reaffirms, supports, and encourages them to “bring their chair” to every space they occupy. Their vision is for every black and brown woman to own their space in the world and of course "bring their chair." "Bringing their chair" as they so eloquently put it is based on the quote by their late Soror, Shirley Chisholm, who said "if they don't give you a seat at the table, bring a folding chair." Congresswoman Chisholm knew all about this as the first Black congresswoman (1968), representing New York State in the U.S. House of Representatives for seven terms. Similarly each of these ladies are blazing trails in their fields, from education to entrepreneurship these Sorors of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. are definitely a collective force, leading within and throughout their communities. Representation in our workplaces, boardrooms and elected offices is necessary and the ladies of The Fortitude Collective are ensuring this shift happens now. After all it's the year of the woman.   Who's Who? In the first 5 minutes you will hear each of these phenomenal women share who they are, what they do, and why they do it.
