Dennis is joined via Zoom by author and sex worker David Wichman to talk about his new book The Four Rooms: An Inqueery On Sexual Freedom and Well-Being. David talks about why he wanted to write the book, the struggles he faced along the way to publishing it and how, once it was finished, he delighted in having AI read it to him in the plummy British voice of actor-director Richard Attenborough. David also talks about why he calls his book "a non-self help book," and how he tries in his writing and his sex work to create a place where gay men can take down their armor. Other topics include: being intentionally smiley in bathhouses and sex clubs, the sacredness of gay divas like Madonna and Kylie Minogue, hearing from fans of his sexual videos from places where being gay is illegal like Syria, being a superfan of Florence + The Machine, why he doesn't have an arrogant guru vibe, what his many exotic travel adventures have taught him about America, digging deep to write his previous book, the memoir Every Grain of Sand and how Stevie Nicks saved his life. www.davidsworld.me

Celebrate Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month with books by AAPI authors! It's one of the prompts on the Winter-Spring 2024 Books & Bites Bingo reading challenge. Our suggestions include an action-packed adventure tale, a YA romance, and a comic but realistic immigration story. Michael's PickThe Thousand Crimes of Ming Tsu by Tom Lin begins with Ming Tsu traversing the salt flats of the Utah Territory, making his way to a Union Pacific camp to kill a man. The past couple years, Ming Tsu had been serving his sentence laboring for the railroad, all because he made the mistake of falling in love and marrying the daughter of a railroad baron. This is an action-packed, cinematic adventure tale full of brawls, gunfights, showdowns, betrayal, and ambushes. It also gives a peek at the xenophobia and racism experienced in the Old West by Chinese immigrants and marginalized folks. Pairing: Pit Beans is a hearty dish that's perfect for any cowboy.Jacqueline's PickEmergency Contact by Mary H.K. Choi is about two young people, Penny and Sam, whose awkward meeting results in them exchanging numbers and promising to be each other's emergency contacts because neither of them has a reliable parent. Their friendship grows via text as they find themselves texting one another non-stop.Fans of Jenny Han's To All the Boys I've Loved Before will enjoy this novel. Both novels have fresh Asian American voices and similar story arcs.Pairing: A flat white espresso.Carrie's PickIn The Chinese Groove by Kathryn Ma, main character Shelley is an 18 year old Chinese student eager to seek his fortune in the United States, where he plans to win back his girlfriend by becoming a famous poet. His "foolproof plan" hits some snags as soon as his flight lands in San Francisco.Though the characters, including Shelley, are all grieving, his comic and somewhat satirical voice keep the tone hopeful. Fans of The Wangs vs. the World will appreciate this character-driven and intricately plotted book.Pairing: Steamed Sea Bass with Ginger and Spring Onion, a recipe from Every Grain of Rice: Simple Chinese Home Cooking by Fuschia Dunlop.
Today we're sharing an episode from a food podcast that we think you might like called The Sporkful, hosted by Dan Pashman. A few years ago, Dan invented a new pasta shape called cascatelli. After Dan's pasta shape, cascatelli, went viral, people everywhere were cooking with it and sending him photos of what they were making. As exciting as that was, he was disappointed that most folks were only making a handful of well-worn dishes with this new shape. So Dan decided to write a cookbook to show the world that there's so much more you can and should be putting on all your pasta shapes, cascatelli and beyond! There's only one problem: he's never written a recipe in his life. In this four-part series, Dan shares the inside story of creating his first cookbook, Anything's Pastable — from the highs and lows of recipe testing, to a research trip across Italy, to the agonizing decisions over the design of the cover. By the end, you'll never look at a cookbook the same way again.Preorder Dan's cookbook today (including signed copies), and see if he's visiting a city near you on his tour of book signings and live podcast tapings with special guests. And follow Dan on Instagram to see photos and videos from the Anything's Pastable journey! This is Episode 1 of Anything's Pastable, and Episode 2 is available in your feed right now! Ukraine, alongside Russia, is one of the world's main grain exporters. When Russia attacked Ukraine, regular grain exports stopped. Since July, some cargo ships have been able to sail via Turkey, but none have reached Tanzania's main port of Dar es Salaam.

Marc Spector caused a lot of damage to the museum "loo" and Steven Grant suffers the consequences. He gets "sacked" and seems to have lost his livelihood, his future as a tour guide, and a bit more of his sanity. With few friends to turn to, he looks inward and finds more than he's ready to handle. Just when he "reunites" with his (well, Marc's) long lost wife--Layla from the flip phone contact list--he gets a visit from corrupt cops who take him to Harrow's version of Shangri La. Arthur and Khonshu are formerly acquainted it would seem, but he weighed his options and now chooses to support Ammit. Layla brings a scarab to a summoning fight and she brings out a new personality for Steven--Mr. Knight. In the end, it's Moon Knight's job to protect the innocent at night, so control is back in Marc's hands...until Khonshu decides he's had enough and finds a new fist of vengeance. Music appreciation folk might appreciate the music in episode two with Bauhaus's "quasi-famous" goth hit "Bela Lugosi's Dead", a redux of Dylan's episode one kick-off song and his personal born again anthem "Every Grain of Sand" and we whet our Middle "Eats" appetite with "El Melouk" by Ahmed Saad in the credits. Classic of Difficulties: Difficult Questions in Medicine, Acupuncture, and Beyond
We all want to be the best at what we do. But how do we get there? We look at some of the best to learn their secrets.Chinese medicine and Chinese martial arts—like shaolin kung fu, ba gua zhang, xing yi chuan—are all known for their sages and their masters. Many of us dream of being able to study with someone who is truly a master. Unfortunately, traditional apprenticeship has been on the decline during the 20th and 21st centuries. What can we learn by looking at great masters in music, medicine, cuisine, and more? How can we understand more about ourselves, our trades, and our arts by looking at them?Like what you're hearing?
El álbum …but i’d rather be with you, too. Escuchar audio

Classic of Difficulties: Difficult Questions in Medicine, Acupuncture, and Beyond
Three simple laws will change the way you think about food, whether you're keto, vegan, plant-based, carnivore, paleo, or anything in between. There's a lot of conflicting information out there about what you should be eating. Never before has there been so much knowledge so readily available to so many different people about food. And never before have we had such tremendous accessibility to a seemingly endless variety of foods. Yesterday we talked about Bob Dylan's song, Every Grain of Sand. A beautiful testimony to how our pain and vulnerability might be the things that help us realize God is everywhere, in Every Grain of Sand. This weekend reminded me of a similar concept, in our busy world slow down or you might miss the most important things of life. My homeschool varsity boys basketball team was in our state Final 4. The first quarter went well, then we stopped doing the little things. Most importantly, we didn't stop to look and anticipate. We reacted. I teach the kids to catch the ball and take a second to face the basket and look around. Put your head down and start dribbling to soon you miss opportunity and you head into trouble. But isn't that life sometimes? Put your head down and move too quickly, you miss things. We need to time to contemplate, to breathe, to examine what is going on around us and make good decisions. Matthew 6:6 "But you, when you pray, go into your inner room, close your door and pray to your Father who is in secret, and your Father who sees what is done in secret will reward you." Mark 1:35 "In the early morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house, and went away to a secluded place, and was praying there." And we don't just need to find the time to stop, look, and listen for prayer. We need to do it for so many of the little things in life that are far more important than their size: a moment to laugh with a friend or loved one, time to read or listen to a favorite song, time to hug and hold the ones your love without a hurry to end the embrace. Don't rush, you'll miss the little the things that often matter most.
You never know where you'll find some grace filled truth. I found some last week in a Bob Dylan song that I had somehow overlooked from his 1981 album, Shot of Love. Paul Williams said about the song: 'The song is about the moments in which we accept our pain and vulnerability and bow down (and are lifted up by) the will of God'. There might not be more poignant words ever written in pop music. Enjoy these lyrics as we discuss on today's The Pilgrim's Odyssey. "In the time of my confession, in the hour of my deepest need When the pool of tears beneath my feet flood every newborn seed There's a dyin' voice within me reaching out somewhere, Toiling in the danger and in the morals of despair. Don't have the inclination to look back on any mistake, Like Cain, I now behold this chain of events that I must break. In the fury of the moment I can see the Master's hand In every leaf that trembles, in every grain of sand. Oh, the flowers of indulgence and the weeds of yesteryear, Like criminals, they have choked the breath of conscience and good cheer. The sun beat down upon the steps of time to light the way To ease the pain of idleness and the memory of decay. I gaze into the doorway of temptation's angry flame And every time I pass that way I always hear my name. Then onward in my journey I come to understand That every hair is numbered like every grain of sand. I have gone from rags to riches in the sorrow of the night In the violence of a summer's dream, in the chill of a wintry light, In the bitter dance of loneliness fading into space, In the broken mirror of innocence on each forgotten face. I hear the ancient footsteps like the motion of the sea Sometimes I turn, there's someone there, other times it's only me. I am hanging in the balance of the reality of man Like every sparrow falling, like every grain of sand."

It’s the 50th episode of the Keep It Quirky podcast! Woohoo! I can't think of a better guest to celebrate the big 5-0...Fuchsia Dunlop is one of my culinary and literary heroes. Her memoir, Shark’s Fin and Sichuan Pepper: A Sweet-Sour Memoir of Eating in China is one of the best memoirs I’ve ever read -- and the fact that it’s full of tantalizing food descriptions and recipes is the cherry on top! The new edition of it has a foreword from the fabulous Bee Wilson (a British food writer and historian). Fuchsia has won 4 James Beard Awards for her work. From Sichuan Cookery (which in the US was published as Land of Plenty) to Every Grain of Rice: Simple Chinese Home Cooking, and more, she has shared Chinese food culture with the masses. Some of her other work has appeared in the New Yorker, Saveur, Lucky Peach, Financial Times and Gourmet, and you’ve probably seen her as a guest on Netflix’s Ugly Delicious with David Chang, and Anthony Bourdain’s Parts Unknown. If you can’t tell by now, Fuchsia is a force of nature. Talking with her was a huge honor and her ongoing love for her work -- decades into it -- is evident. Her career began with a sub-editing job at the BBC, which led her to take Mandarin classes and after that she won a British Council scholarship to study a year in Chengdu, China, the heart of Sichuan province. The rest, as they say, is history. Show notes:-Her newest book release: The Food of Sichuan → https://www.amazon.co.uk/Food-Sichuan-Fuchsia-Dunlop/dp/1324004835-She also does culinary tours around China! In 1959, a young singer-songwriter named Bob Zimmerman changed his name. As Bob Dylan, he then went on to change the world. After being lauded for more than 50 years for his songs and lyrics, this icon of the Sixties seemingly had achieved everything possible… and then the Nobel Committee awarded him the Nobel Prize for Literature. But does a writer of song lyrics deserve to be ranked among the world’s finest poets and novelists? Host Jacke Wilson is joined by Mike Palindrome, the President of the Literature Supporters Club, for a freewheelin’ conversation about the legendary Bob Dylan. Bob Dylan Songs: “Tangled Up in Blue” (performed by K.T. Tunstall); “Lay Lady Lay”; “My Back Pages” (performed by the Byrds); “Every Grain of Sand” (performed by Emmylou Harris) Show Notes: Contact the host at jackewilsonauthor@gmail.com or by leaving a voicemail at 1-361-4WILSON (1-361-494-5766). In this episode of the Sinica Podcast, Kaiser and Jeremy talk to Fuchsia about her time at the Sichuan Higher Institute of Cuisine, how she chooses recipes for her books and the gamut of flavors of Chinese cuisine. "You both want to challenge people and give people dishes that they don’t necessarily know, but also to offer them things that are doable and that are palatable," says Fuchsia Dunlop, a British writer who has won a cult following with her recipe books of Chinese food. Fuchsia’s 2013 book, Every Grain of Rice: Simple Chinese Home Cooking, won the 2014 James Beard Award for an international cookbook. The renowned culinary organization also recognized much of her other work, which includes more books as well as articles featured in publications such as Lucky Peach, The New Yorker and the Financial Times. In addition, Fuchsia has appeared on Anthony Bourdain’s Parts Unknown, CNN’s On China and NPR’s All Things Considered, consults on Chinese cooking for major companies and gives speeches around the world. For someone who described her relationship with Chinese cuisine as one that began fortuitously, it is an impressive list of accomplishments. As the first foreign student at the Sichuan Higher Institute of Cuisine, Fuchsia studied the regional cooking style along with about 50 other students, only two of whom were women. She remembers the gender dynamics of that experience, as well as the slow transition of her classmates toward calling her by her name rather than laowai, the Chinese slang word for foreigner. Fuchsia’s latest book, Land of Fish and Rice: Recipes from the Culinary Heart of China, delves into the cuisine of Jiangnan. It’s a region whose flavors she loves just as much as those of Sichuan, which she also has written about. This week on Eat Your Words, host Cathy Erway welcomes author and blogger Erin Alderson to the program. Author of “The Homemade Flour Cookbook: The Home Cook’s Guide to Milling Nutritious Flours and Creating Delicious Recipes with Every Grain, Legume, Nut, and Seed from A-Z,” Erin talks to Cathy about how she became inspired to dedicate an entire book on making this staple ingredient at home. She goes on to explain how milling at home can be less expensive and healthier than buying pre-ground flours. Much of the flour that is sold in grocery stores has been stripped of its nutrients and has extra ingredients and preservatives added to prolong shelf life. Not only that, but some flours, like almond, can run as high as $15 per bag! Exploring the different ways to grind flour including electric and non-electric grinders, food processors, blenders, and even coffee grinders, Erin strives to make it easy for any do-it-yourself homemaker to have fresh flour whenever needed. Tune in for an interesting conversation! This program was brought to you by Brooklyn Slate. “Food is a really personal journey for me, and, I think, for a lot of other people.” [21:45] “I do think that eating whole grains and whole flour is better for you than always seating all purpose flour… it’s all about moderation.” [23:20] —Erin Alderson on Eat Your Words
