I've interviewed hundreds of prominent people through the years. Occasionally I am asked, "who is the most interesting, thoughtful person you ever interviewed?" It is an unanswerable question. But suffice it to say that Majora Carter is part of that conversation. I've interviewed her twice . Each time I have come away from the interview a smarter person thanks to Majora. Her thoughts on issues like environmental racism and community talent retention opened my eyes to realities that didn't affect me personally. So it got me to think about these topics and ask myself some difficult questions. And that's a good thing. Her personal story is compelling: growing up in Hunts Point, a neighborhood in the South Bronx in New York City during the "Bronx is Burning" years, going off to Wesleyan University vowing never to return to the South Bronx, But return she did, winning a Macarthur Fellow (the so called "Genius Award") along the way, achieving personal and professional fulfillment in the old neighborhood.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Join contributors to the special edition of Logic Magazine, Beacons, for a discussion on Transformative Justice and Knowledge Production in Tech Techno-capitalism is re-negotiating the social contract but knowledge about technologies is too often sequestered behind the lock doors of industry. Black women researchers like Dr. Timnit Gebru who raised alarm about the racial and ecological implications of emergent technologies are systematically silenced and forced out. Additionally, corporate capture of academic departments has even further limited the space to do critical research. Given these obstacles, how can researchers both inside and outside of tech companies do the difficult work of research, critique, and resistance? When individualist opportunism is the guiding norm of knowledge production, how do we cultivate a practice of transformative justice in the context of tech research? What are the set of tools and collective histories Black people in the Americas and the Black global diaspora can draw on in order to care for each other in the process of producing research about tech? What would it look like if real estate development were led by the people who already live in the neighborhood? In this episode, Laura interviews South Bronx native Majora Carter who decided to stay where she grew up and rewrite the playbook for neighborhood development. A self-described “chick from the hood… with zero experience in real estate,” she's a MacArthur “genius award” recipient, owner of the hip hop themed Boogie Down Grind Cafe that has survived and even thrived during Covid, thanks to a bit of help from Beyoncé. Right now, it's no secret that our population (which is almost 8 billion now) is facing a tremendous amount of collective challenges with our health, our food system, and our planet as a whole. We all have some work to do and this week's interview with ECO-Activist, Leilani Münter, will illuminate conversation and elevate the positive impact that something so simple as eating a whole-foods plant-based diet can have on the environment as a WHOLE. Leilani has been broadcasting this message for over a decade primarily from behind the wheel of a race car - I know - not exactly where you'd think you'd see these messages, but as she says on her website, “Never Underestimate a vegan hippie chick with a race car!” You'll never underestimate Leilani after today's conversation. Since retiring from race car driving in 2019, she's been revving up her advocacy engines even more through documentary films like “Racing Extinction,” keynote speaking, and non-profit work, all in a tireless effort to make a cleaner and kinder world for everyone. Today, she talks to Rip about: Her unique childhood as the daughter of a Japanese/Hawaiian Mother and German Father while growing up in Minnesota Her Galileo moment when she learned the truth about our food as a young girl eating a hamburger at a fast-food restaurant How her Biology degree from UC San Diego was the foundation of the advocacy work she does today Why she loves being behind the wheel of a race car and the intensity, presence, and advocacy voice it provides for causes that are important to her Her recent vegan birthday present - a meal at Eleven Madison Park - and her secret for getting reservations! Why Leilani and her husband (and cats!) choose to be child-free Additional causes that she advocates for the health and longevity of our planet: renewable energy, solar power, electric cars, animal rights, and, of course, a plant-based diet As the New York Times wrote, "Steve McQueen probably never lost sleep over his carbon footprint. Not so for racecar driver Leilani Münter - a green racecar driver with a clean conscience." Rev up your advocacy engines and enjoy this conversation with a true Eco-Hero. About Leilani Münter Leilani Münter is a biology graduate, professional race car driver and environmental activist. Discovery's Planet Green named her the #1 eco athlete in the world, ELLE Magazine awarded her their Genius Award, and Sports Illustrated named her one of the top ten female race car drivers in the world. Leilani is an advocate for solar power, electric cars, plant-based diet and animal rights. Leilani is active in lobbying for these causes in Washington, DC and beyond. She has been a guest at The White House and the United Nations in Geneva. Since 2007, Leilani has been adopting an acre of rainforest for every race she runs. She uses her race car to get the environmental message in front of the 75 million race fans in the USA. Her race cars have carried messages about renewable energy from wind and solar power in addition to clean energy legislation. Leilani has also been active in the effort to end cetacean captivity and has run the documentaries The Cove and Blackfish on her race cars. She has raced both open-wheel cars (Indy Pro Series) and stock cars (NASCAR, ARCA). Leilani has recorded 9 top-five, 21 top-ten, and 37 top-fifteen finishes in 61 starts. Leilani is on the board of the Oceanic Preservation Society, a non-profit that creates film, photography, and media, inspiring people to save the oceans. They won the Academy Award for their first documentary The Cove and Leilani is featured in their 2015 documentary Racing Extinction. Leilani is also an Ambassador for Ric O'Barry's Dolphin Project, an organization she has been volunteering for since 2010. She also sits on the board of advisors of The Solutions Project, a non-profit organization dedicated to accelerating the transition to 100% renewable energy. Leilani is vegan. Her personal car is an electric Tesla Model S. Her home features solar panels, a 550-gallon rainwater collection system, solar and LED lighting, and a vegetable garden. Ananya Jain is with me, and we are digging into what it means to be happy and successful. Jain was born in India, moved to the US at 18 for college, and is currently a senior at Georgia Tech. At 21, Jain is the founder of Full Circle LLC, a company dedicated to sustainable solutions, especially in the mental health industry. She is making a global impact and garnered recognition with many prestigious awards, including the Genius Award, the President's Award at Georgia Tech, and the rare Diana Award. Her TedTalk How Creative Thinking Saved My Life is mind-blowing, as is the humility with which she discusses her ability to have an impact on the world around her. Influence can be viewed as something reserved for the aged and wise. But standing out is not dependent on a completed story. We all have something to offer, and it is impossible to stand out if you are waiting for your narrative to be fully formed. You are living your story right now. Your influence is a living thing as well; growing as you grow, and it can open the door for others. In a complicated world, one of the best things you, or anyone for that matter, can do, is define what success looks like for you, as an individual. Life is difficult and full of mistakes and heartbreak. Without knowing what your success looks like, you will never find your path to happiness. The ability to look forward to what you can do will help you gain momentum. Recognizing who in your life is contributing to that momentum and who is slowing you down is paramount to success. Have boundaries, know them, and don't be afraid to cut ties with those who cross them. Perspective can be hard to come by, especially when it is clouded by different energies and efforts. Invest your energy wisely and make sure you are investing in those who are traveling the same road as you. Lastly, don't let success be about what you do. Go where happiness takes you. Explore where you are, meet different people, and try new things, and then you can make the choice. When you are surrounded by the right people, those who will keep you humble and lift your dreams, you will have the freedom to explore and make the mistakes necessary to find out what your thing is. You don't need to know what it is right now; you need the stability to discover it. We are all a work in progress. Stand up for yourself, define your boundaries, be intentional about who you surround yourself with, and then find the job that fits into the life you have created for yourself. In parting, Jain has a thought for you: I love you and trust you to do what is best for yourself. Don't wait for it to be the last message - say this to those around you every day. Rise. Shine. Impact. Define success and find your happy. It's been a rough year for everyone & Americans especially who suffer from Election Stress Syndrome. So, instead of moving to Canada, we're asking for an Emotional Support Canadian! It started as a joke, but we're not in a joking mood. It was stupid enough for us to take the bait. Many are just turning to alcohol & fries to cope with the this stupid year. And the booze is getting more stupid, too. My Insane FL Nephew, Pancho Guero" will run down all the new adult beverages to chose from. Anything from something sweet to something sickening...like whiskey from beaver butt juice. Pancho also offers advice to a parent who has a teenager who loves pranking his neighbors with fake missing pets posters....and the more bizarre the better. Joe Biden gets a "Genius Award" for his senile stupidity & I'll give you my Top Advantages of Being Stupid--because if "ignorance is bliss" some folks are in a BLIZZARD. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/eriklane/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/eriklane/support

Best known for her work in the field of SETI, tonight Jill will be discussing the search for technosignatures. Dr. Tarter is the Emeritus Chair for SETI Research at the SETI Institute in Mountain View, California and serves as a member of the Board of Trustees for that institution. Dr. Tarter received her Bachelor of Engineering Physics Degree with Distinction from Cornell University and her Master’s Degree and a Ph.D. in Astronomy from the University of California, Berkeley. She has spent the majority of her professional career attempting to answer the old human question “Are we alone?” by searching for evidence of technological civilizations beyond Earth. She served as Project Scientist for NASA’s SETI program, the High Resolution Microwave Survey and has conducted numerous observational programs at radio observatories worldwide. She is a Fellow of the AAAS, the California Academy of Sciences, and the Explorers Club, she was named one of the Time 100 Most Influential People in the World in 2004, and one of the Time 25 in Space in 2012, received a TED prize in 2009, two public service awards from NASA, multiple awards for communicating science to the public, and has been honored as a woman in technology. Pioneering wireless power: a rare interview from the charismatic and controversial founder of an L.A.-based startup that everyone thought would fail. Meredith Perry founded uBeam back in 2011. Mark Cuban invested in the company and called it the next zillion-dollar idea. In 2015 Fortune called her “brilliant” and asked if she might be the next Elon Musk. But less than a year later, a key employee left the company in 2016 and skepticism grew about her company's ability to deliver on its technical milestones. One can understand why Meredith isn't keen on speaking with the media. For six years, her team has been quietly plugging away at the technology, and she's only made herself visible again recently, to demo the technology actually working. A couple of months ago, while she was wrapping up a $20 million raise, I came to her office bearing margaritas. I was hoping to get her to speak candidly about her journey—and she did. I have to admit, I've been skeptical about the technology myself, so I was curious to learn how it works and the challenges she's faced along the way. I wanted to learn what it's been like to bounce back from her PR nightmare, and she humbly shares some of her lessons learned as a brainy young CEO managing a team for the first time in a high-stakes environment. We talk about geek chic, astrobiology, the no a-hole rule, and the struggles of trying to do something no one thinks is possible. For more information, photos, and links, check out the show notes at http://makeitinla.org/meredithperry. More Links: uBeam website: http://uBeam.com Social Media: @meredithperry @ubeam About Meredith Perry Meredith Perry is the inventor of uBeam, a technology that uses ultrasound to transmit power over the air to charge electronic devices wirelessly. Using a patented system, uBeam is a wireless power system that can safely charge multiple electronic devices wirelessly at a distance. Meredith founded uBeam in 2011 while studying at the University of Pennsylvania. While at Penn, Meredith served as a student ambassador for NASA, where she worked on technology to detect life on Mars, experimented in zero gravity and researched and published papers in astrobiology and medicine. She graduated in 2011 with a degree in paleobiology. Meredith has been included in Fortune's “40 Under 40” Mobilizers, Forbes' “30 Under 30” and Vanity Fair's “The New Establishment.” She has also been recognized as one of Fast Company's “Most Creative People” and is the recipient of Elle Magazine's Genius Award.

Plus, the first ever GENIUS Award!
“Our generation must fulfill the most noble of duties by ensuring the survival of future generations through the most basic of survival mechanisms – adaptation.”Leilani MünterIf you want provoke change — real change – it's imperative to take a stand outside the echo chamber of the converted. That's the ethos of professional race car driver and environmental activist Leilani Münter.Named one of the top ten female race car drivers in the world by Sports Illustrated, Leilani races in NASCAR's ARCA Series and is the fourth woman in history to race in the Indy Pro Series (the development league of IndyCar). She has logged impressive performances at both Daytona and Talladega and set the record for the highest finish for a female driver in the history of the Texas Motor Speedway when she finished fourth in 2006.But what’s most intriguing about Leilani — beyond the inherent intrigue of being one of the only female drivers in her sport — is her singular commitment to leveraging her profile to educate, inspire and raise awareness around environmental issues.Winning isn't everything. Change is the goal.Putting her money where her mouth is, Leilani has foregone traditional sponsorship opportunities to race cars draped in oversized logos promoting the documentaries The Cove and Blackfish. At Daytona in February 2017, she raced a car displaying Vegan Powered bills across the hood and sides. And since 2007, she adopts one acre of rainforest for every race she runs.Leilani has presented before the UN in Geneva in 2015 and has appeared on Capitol Hill to speak on behalf of clean energy legislation. In addition, she was one of the first activists to arrive at the 2010 Gulf oil disaster and traveled to Taiji, Japan three times to document the dolphin slaughter depicted in the Academy Award winning documentary The Cove. She sits on board of the Oceanic Preservation Society and on the advisory board of The Solutions Project, a nonprofit dedicated to accelerating the transition to 100 percent renewable energy.Leilani appears in the 2015 documentary Racing Extinction and her accomplishments have been profiled in USA Today, Italian Vogue, The New York Times, The Washington Post, Reader's Digest, Esquire, and Newsweek. Discovery’s Planet Green named Münter the No. 1 eco-athlete in the world, she is a recipient of ELLE Magazine's 2012 Genius Award, and Glamour Magazine named her an “Eco Hero.”This conversation explores Leilani's upbringing, what motivated her to become a race car driver, and what its like to be one of the only females in her male dominated sport. It's a discussion about the intersection of activism and sport — how Leilani infuses performance with her strident commitment to principles. But mostly this is a conversation about the why behind Leilani's drive. A strong, powerful female role model committed to positively impacting culture, shifting consumer habits and catalyzing beneficial environmental policy change, I aspire to her level of dedication to a better world. As Leilani is fond of saying, never underestimate a vegan hippie chick with a race car. After this conversation, you won't either.I love this exchange and sincerely hope you do too.Peace + Plants,Listen & Subscribe on Apple Podcasts | Soundcloud | StitcherThanks to this week’s sponsors:Squarespace: The easiest way to create a beautiful website, See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Is it possible for there to be too much glitter? We think not, but it will surely be put to the test next weekend. Two of the Northwest's most ambitious drag queens are presenting full length shows that blend dance, drag, comedy, blistering soundscapes, and utter hijinkx … with wigs the size of Volkswagons. Kaj-Anne Pepper started out as the youngest member of the infamous performance art drag troupe Sissy Boy in the mid-aughts. He's since matured into Portland's youngest grand dame, hosting TBA's hugely popular Critical Mascara Drag Ball. He also does club nights across town. His show is called “D.I.V.A. Practice” and runs Apr. 29–May 1 at New Expressive Works: http://kpepper.net/.When Seattle's alt weekly The Stranger gave a Genius Award last year to Cherdonna Shinatra, the paper characterized her as an “uncategorizable spectacle.” Cherdonna is the alter ego of dancer Jody Keuhner, who will bring the show “Worth My Salt” to Portland Center Stage from Apr. 29–May 1: http://risk-reward.org/upcoming/cherdonna-shinatra/Producer Aaron Scott began by asking Keuhner how, as a biological woman, she got her start as a drag queen.
This week on State of Wonder we have stories of love, loss, law and looking back.Full story: http://www.opb.org/radio/programs/stateofwonder/segment/prince-protests-pnca-pica-new-building-bradford/The Passing Of The Purple OneWe can’t quite believe we’re once again eulogizing a musical icon, but music fans have been thrown into mourning after Thursday’s news about the death of Prince. We talk with the DJ Rev Shines and musicians Farnell Newton and Tony Ozier about the role the legend played in their musical paths, as well as look at some of the ways Prince pushed gender, genre, and the world at large.Reflecting On Art And LossHost April Baer reflects on the loss of Oregon painter Rick Bartow, the death of Merle Haggard, and the passing of her own father. Sometimes art is the conduit to grief.Meet The BradfordsAs a single mother in New York City, Katherine Bradford raised two children and pursued the life of a painter. She succeeded at both activities. One of those children grew up to be the Portland author and filmmaker Arthur Bradford. And now, at age 73, Katherine is blowing up in the art world. April sat down with mother and son in preview of Katherine's show at Adams and Ollman Gallery (April 22–June 3) to discuss her newfound success and how their work is connected.PICA Gets Huge New DigsFor 21 years, Portland Institute for Contemporary Art has been a pied piper on the art scene, leading audiences into overlooked parts of town and transforming empty warehouses into art hot spots for events like the Time-Based Arts Festival. Now a patron has bought a 16,000-square foot complex near NE Williams and Broadway and is turning it over to PICA rent free. What will this mean for a roving band of arts instigators who’ve staked their identity on impermanence? We have exclusive video from a drone fly thru, because drones+art=awesome.Protests At PNCAIf you passed by Portland’s North Park Blocks this week, you surely noticed the protesters: dozens of students and staff at Pacific Northwest College of Art marched to ask for changes in the college’s hiring and financial practices. The protesters say the school's treatment of part-time, short-contract instructors has consequences for what happens in the classroom. We'll hear from organizers and the college administration, which is taking first steps to cease the protest. The Slants And The Supreme Court?Portland band The Slants are currently in dispute with the United States Patent and Trade Office, which has refused to grant a trademark for the band's name, citing racist connotations. The band, made up of Asian-American musicians, say that they're reclaiming the term. Now the patent office has appealed to the Supreme Court. If the court takes it up, it could have ramifications far beyond the band.Drag And DanceNext weekend, two of the Northwest’s most ambitious drag queens are presenting full length shows that blend dance, drag, comedy blistering soundscapes, and utter hijinkx … with wigs the size of Volkswagons. His show is called “D.I.V.A. Practice” (Apr. 29–May 1). And Seattle artist Cherdonna Shinatra (Jody Keuhner) was described by Seattle’s alt-weekly The Stranger as an “uncategorizable spectacle” when it gave her a Genius Award last year. She will bring the show “Worth My Salt” to Portland Center Stage from Apr. 29–May 1. Jazz TownWe're sharing excerpts from KMHD's Oregon Experience documentary Jazz Town. In this segment, we hear from those with ties to the historic Albina neighborhood and the jazz scene that thrived there throughout the 50s and 60s. Find more at the Jazz Town page.
For Episode 5 I visit Emily Gherard at her home and studio. Emily is a fantastic painter out of Seattle whose vision has been recognized locally as a Neddy Award finalist in 2013 and as a nominee for The Stranger's annual Genius Award this last summer. Personally her paintings have held me rapt since I first saw them and if I thought some sort of voodoo spell would devine for me the secret to their sublime creation I would have started collecting chicken bones a long time ago. This is part one of a two-part episode, the second of which will drop on Friday, December 19th. Bonus Xmas music from Lola and the Red Hots helps you get your yule on.
