In this episode, host Brogan sits down with Gerald Ratner to explore the theme of male resilience. Mr. Ratner shares his remarkable story of success and downfall after a joke he made in 1991 cost him his livelihood and over half a billion pounds. Despite the challenges he faced, Mr. Ratner's journey is one of resilience and lessons for all. Tune in to hear his inspiring story of redemption and strength.

How Gerald Ratner built a 2,500-store retail empire through acquisition British entrepreneur Gerald Ratner took his business from a single family-owned shop in Richmond to a multi-billion, 2,500-store retail empire spanning the UK and US. In the process, he acquired some of the biggest names on the high street, including H. Samuel and Ernest Jones. His entire strategy was built on growth by acquisition, often pushing the business to the limit. You may have watched some of the recent video highlights from my interview with Gerald for my Mastermind clients. On today's episode of the Business Buying Strategies podcast, you can listen to the whole interview where he detailed exactly how he grew the business at each stage, including the creative ways he raised funding and persuaded the owners to sell to him. You will discover… How Gerald used acquisition as a strategy to dominate the high street by buying his key competitors How buying H. Samuel transformed the group and allowed the retailer to expand its customers beyond its historical base Why Gerald's reasons for acquiring Ernest Jones was more than simply adding another 60 stores to the portfolio (it was a strategic move to “buy into” supplier relationships) Why Gerald chose not to copy his acquisition strategy when expanding to the US (and what he did instead) What he really said in his infamous speech at the Royal Albert Hall that no one remembers ** Looking for a great acquisition lawyer in the UK? Use mine! ** If you are looking for a lawyer in the UK to help you get the deal over the line, then use my own lawyer, John Andrews. One speechmaker inspired millions with his words, the other utterly destroyed his own multi-million-dollar business with just a few phrases. Civil rights icon Martin Luther King Jr (played by Jeffrey Wright of American Fiction, Westworld and The Hunger Games) and jewelry store owner Gerald Ratner offer a stark contrast on when you should stick to the script - and when you should take a risk. We're taking a short rest on Cautionary Tales this January. We'll be back again in February, with a treasure chest of gripping, hair-raising tales for your ears. While you wait, we wanted to share some classic episodes from the Cautionary Vault - this is one of our favorites. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
As Ron Atkinson would have doubtless said, it was a case of déjà vu all over again in 1982/83, with Liverpool romping to the league title and retaining the League Cup. But there was change elsewhere, with Tottenham's iron grip on the FA Cup finally released, Big Ron getting his hands on a trophy, much to the delight of Gerald Ratner. Graham Taylor's Watford blitzkrieged their way to second place in their first ever crack at the First Division while Manchester City get relegated and David Pleat straps on his dancing Hush Puppies.
Today, Toni interviews Gerald Ratner, an author, mentor, and keynote speaker. Gerald shares his journey from being the chairman of a successful jewellery business to facing a major setback after a controversial speech. He discusses the challenges he faced, including the negative impact on his business and personal life. Despite the difficulties, Gerald's resilience and ability to take risks led him to start a successful health club and venture into online business. He also shares his experience as a public speaker, using humour to engage and inspire audiences. This episode highlights the importance of perseverance, embracing failure, and finding humour in life's challenges. KEY TAKEAWAYS Taking risks can lead to great success: Gerald Ratner's ability to take risks and think outside the box allowed him to turn around his struggling jewellery business and create a successful health club. Trust your gut instincts: Gerald's gut feeling about the potential success of his health club and the online jewellery business proved to be accurate, even when others doubted him. Embrace failure and learn from it: Gerald's infamous speech and the subsequent downfall of his jewellery business could have crushed him, but he chose to learn from it and use it as a platform for personal growth and success. The power of humour and storytelling: Gerald's ability to make people laugh and engage them through his speeches and storytelling has been a key factor in his success as a public speaker and mentor. Overcoming setbacks and staying positive: Despite the challenges he faced, Gerald's resilience and positive mindset allowed him to bounce back and find new opportunities for success. BEST MOMENTS "I clearly felt that the approach that I'd taken was the right approach and that added to a lot of other things in terms of marketing ourselves and being sort of very aggressive." "I had this brilliant idea that I would go back. I thought it was one place that I would get publicity, only one place talking about one subject." "I love doing it, I'm traveling around to lovely places. I'm doing similar speech, it's not a huge amount of effort, this is great, why did I slog my guts out in the jewellery business?" "I like making people laugh and that's how I got into trouble in the first place. And I was like that as a kid, you know, you asked me earlier about a kid and I wasn't very good at lessons, but I was good at making people laugh at school." "Laughter is something that is very important in life. You're happy when you're laughing. So it's great to go to these events." HOST BIO Toni's journey defies the norm. Raised with a strong work ethic and a traditional career path in mind, she initially pursued a corporate job in HR after earning her degree. However, in 2015, everything changed when she attended a property training seminar. Little did she know that this event would ignite a profound passion for property investment. With her husband Chris, Toni raised millions in joint venture finance, creating a multi-million-pound property portfolio. But her story doesn't stop there. By the age of 33, she left her HR job behind to empower others in building their successful property businesses. Toni's passion for public speaking led her to become a world record holder. Beyond the accolades, she sees it as a calling to educate and inspire. Toni hosts training events and uses her "Talks with Toni" podcast to share insights, interview captivating guests, and motivate her audience.
In this special episode, David Yelland and Simon Lewis take you into the eye of a media storm and talk to a person who has lived through it. What's it like to wake up to a world where everyone knows your name, and you wish they didn't? In 1991, Gerald Ratner had one of Britain's most famous fan-hitting moments. Having built a billion-pound chain of high-street jewellery shops, he saw his business collapse around him after making a seemingly harmless, yet ill-fated, joke. In fact, what happened to him has become so synonymous with a fan-hitting moment that he's become a verb – in business English, “Doing a Ratner” is shorthand for really screwing up in an entirely avoidable way. But, 25 years later, he says there are many silver linings to losing a billion pounds in 10 seconds flat.Producer: Eve Streeter Editor: Sarah Teasdale Executive Producer: William Miller Researcher: Sophie Smith Music by Eclectic Sounds A Raconteur production for BBC Radio 4
Natalie invites you to participate in a special mentoring session, conducted by herself and famed business mind, Gerald Ratner, in which they touch on the temptations and challenges of maintaining a healthy lifestyle, such as exercise and alcohol consumption. The conversation then shifts to the concept of facing difficult situations and the pleasure that comes from overcoming them. The hosts share personal experiences with stress and its physical manifestations, highlighting the importance of addressing stress and finding outlets for it. They also discuss the impact of limiting beliefs and societal conditioning on personal and financial growth. KEY TAKEAWAYS Engaging in difficult tasks and challenges can bring more satisfaction and pleasure than taking the easy route. Avoiding difficult situations or burying one's head in the sand can lead to more stress and negative consequences in the long run. It is important to confront and address stress and its manifestations in the body, such as brain fog or physical symptoms, in order to find relief and improve overall well-being. Challenging limiting beliefs and societal norms can lead to personal growth and the ability to create one's own destiny. BEST MOMENTS "Exercise is the opposite. We know what we should do, but there's so many temptations out there that we don't always do it." "It's annoying because we know how we can feel better, but we don't always do it." "We only get pleasure from achieving things that are difficult, that we have to make an effort and then we get the pleasure that we succeeded." - "It's very true. It is annoying. And all of the hard stuff that you don't appreciate in the time, in the moment, it's like, why is this hard?" I'm interviewing the person at the centre of perhaps the most famous story in business history: Gerald Ratner. Gerald Ratner is a British household name. He took over his family's jewellery business in 1984 which had at that time 130 stores. By 1990 it had 2,500 stores, 25,000 employees, annual sales of 1.2 billion and profits of 121 million. By 1991 he was then Chairman-Chief Executive of Ratners Group, the world's largest jewellery retail company which included H Samuel and Ernest Jones. Then, disaster. When at a corporate speaking engagement in 1991 at the Albert Hall for the Institute of Directors, he described a sherry decanter (one of their products), as total crap. He joked that a prawn sandwich would last longer than the gold earrings that his shops sell. The media jumped on it. The value of the Ratner group plummeted by around £500 million. Gerald was dismissed from the business, and lost nearly everything. Since then he has reinvented himself, built two 7-figure businesses, writing two best seller books: the Rise and Fall and Rise Again, and Reinvent Yourself co-authored with Rob Moore, and has become an excellent business mentor and public speaker. In this interview, Gerald takes us behind the scenes, reflecting on the impact of that pivotal moment on his personal and professional life, and how he managed to bounce back from such a significant setback. His story is one of resilience, learning, and transformation. But it doesn't stop there! As a renowned motivational speaker, Gerald shares key messages from his experiences and offers valuable advice to business leaders on how to handle crises and rebound from public mistakes. In addition, Gerald shares his insights on cash management, highlighting the most significant mistakes businesses make and providing essential "What not to do" tips to avoid financial pitfalls. Welcome to the last Business Buying Strategies episode of 2022. This week we've picked out twelve highlights from the year - one for each month. So in January, I talked with Richard Bundock, one of my dealmaking clients. Richard had started a successful business, but wasn't able to grow it organically as quickly as wanted to, so he turned to acquisitions instead. In February, I met Sam Turner, who gave up a lucrative and successful corporate career to become a dealmaker in the heating and ventilation sector. In March, I caught up with Nick Manuel, who graduated from my programme with the right attitude, determination and most importantly the right strategy to make successful acquisitions. In April, we met Peter Lidgitt, who bought nine UK businesses in 2020, totalling £20m in revenue – all whilst being locked down for most of the year at his home in France. In May, I talked with legendary jewellery entrepreneur Gerald Ratner who grew his global business almost entirely through acquisition. In June, we met John Richardson, whose expertise is in acquiring coffee retail businesses, and establishing a chain a coffee shops. In July, I spoke with Graeme Carling, who spent a decade building a substantial property portfolio, before buying a well known Scottish construction company out of administration. In August, we met Aled Davies, who runs a printing and textile printing family business. Aled had been trying to grow this business organically - but having listened to this podcast, and joining me on the Fasttrack Program, has now made his first acquisition. In September, I was joined by Phil Hunt, one of my private clients. Although Phil has a full-time job as an HR director of a city bank in London, this hasn't stopped him from making his first two acquisitions. In October, Jo Bell joined us to talk about her first five business acquisitions and the lessons that she has learnt along the way. In November, I met James Gardner, for whom a chance meeting led to the acquisition of a funeral care business, and has now become a group through acquisition. Finally, earlier in December, I caught up with Andy Doyle, who joined my very first business acquisition mastermind program nearly five years ago, back in 2018. Five years on and he has made several acquisitions, and has ambitious plans for the years ahead. A new analysis of the extraordinary story of how a speech sparked the downfall of Gerald Ratner and the company he led, Ratners Group, at the time the largest jewellery retailer in the world. After describing one of his products as “crap” in 1991, Ratner's name is now linked with all sorts of corporate and political gaffes. “Doing a Ratner” is used to describe anyone who makes ill-judged and unnecessary comments that inflict damage on their brand or products. But the story of what happened after the speech for Ratner and his company is more complicated than that. In this episode of Business Studies, Ratner discusses why he made the joke, the turmoil in his life after, and what lessons we should take from what happened, more than 30 years on… This is a public episode. With Deborah Fielding talking to the king of one-liners Gerald Ratner about how he lost the biggest jewellers in the world all on a joke.
In this episode, Jeannette talks to Gerald Ratner who is now a highly sought-after speaker, an author and entrepreneur. In the eighties, he transformed the UK jewellery industry and took the US by storm. In 1991, the Ratner´s Group netted profits of £125 million, which would equate to almost a £billion, today. They talk about that journey, including how he lost it all when he made a joke when speaking to the Institute of Directors at the Royal Albert Hall, in 1991. Gerald also explains how he went about building multiple brands under one umbrella, including top-end shops and why he prefers to use the acquisition model to grow a business. As well as speaking about the mental health issues he suffered from and what he did to solve them. KEY TAKEAWAYS For two years, Ratner Group shares were the fastest-growing on the FTSE100. What you say in a speech needs to be carefully tailored to fit your audience, the type of event and the venue. When things go wrong there is always a silver lining. Pre-selling membership is a great acid test for a business idea. Acquiring businesses rather than starting from scratch brings many benefits. It is much easier to face the problems rather than hide from them. Exercise every day it helps you to balance your life out. Look after your staff, it's the right thing to do, it is good business and creates great loyalty. You are not going to achieve anything by being a wallflower. The key to success is making smart decisions. BEST MOMENTS ‘In 7 years, we went from losing £34,000 to being the world´s largest jewellery business. ´ ‘One the advantages of being sacked is that I´ve now become a much better husband and father.' ‘Happiness actually is about giving things to people not just taking things.' He observed that “the people who shouted the loudest and appeared to give the best offers sold the most”. Ratner joined the family business in 1966 and built up an extremely successful chain of jewellers during the '80s, of which he was chief executive. The shops shocked the formerly staid jewellery industry by displaying fluorescent orange posters advertising cut-price bargains, and by offering low price ranges. The Ratners Group consisted of Ratners, H. Samuel, Ernest Jones, Leslie Davis, Watches of Switzerland and over 1,000 shops in the US including Kays. Ratners was one of the few British retailers to succeed in the US. Gerald Ratner was, until 1991, one of the UK's most successful and well-known businessmen. Unfortunately, he went down in history when, at a corporate speaking engagement for the Institute of Directors, he jokingly described one of his non-jewellery products as “total crap” and compared another to an M&S prawn sandwich; suggesting the sandwich would last longer. Gerald Ratner was, until 1991, one of the UK's most successful and well-known businessmen. Unfortunately, he went down in history when, at a corporate speaking engagement for the Institute of Directors, he jokingly described one of his products as “total crap” and compared another to an M&S prawn sandwich; suggesting the sandwich would last longer. This, now infamous speech, spelt disaster for both Gerald and his company, Ratner Group, the world's largest jewellery retail company which included H Samuel and Ernest Jones, of which he was the Chairman and Chief Executive, However, Gerald's story of how he dealt with the aftermath and returned over a decade later to become, once again, a major player in the online retail sector is a remarkable journey of perseverance, passion, resilience, entrepreneurial skill and a remarkable lesson in overcoming crisis and adversity. This week, we speak with Gerald Ratner, former Chairman and CEO of Ratners Jewellers. In this episode, we discuss Gerald's journey from starting in the family business as a high school dropout to eventually taking over the business and turning it into the world's largest jewellery retailer. At its peak, Ratners owned 6 household brands and had over 2000 stores across the UK and US. His story is an impressive example of how growth via acquisition can accelerate any business. Gerald also explains how a few jokes ultimately led to the downfall of the company, and him being ousted as CEO. The 7 years that followed were difficult for Gerald, but he discusses how his road-bike kept him sane and ultimately allowed him to bounce back and rise again. Enjoy the episode!
Gerald Ratner is a British businessman and motivational speaker. He was formerly a chief executive officer of the major British jewellery company Ratners Group. He achieved notoriety after making a speech in which he jokingly denigrated two of the company's products. He currently speaks around the world at corporate and promotional events. Gerald joins Steven to talk about the attitude and mindset you need in order to excel in business, the fallout from his now legendary speech and how it shaped the businessman he subsequently became, and how he came back from the depths of failure to regain his position as one of the world's savviest businessmen. KEY TAKEAWAYS In business, it is incumbent upon us to be aggressive when it comes to finding opportunities. nothing must stand in your way. When your back is against the wall, when everything is against you, and yet you still make things work, it's the greatest feeling in the world. Business and life are about ups and downs. Anybody can take the worst negatives and turn them into the most glittering of positives. Business is all about the continual investing of money into keeping your business at the best level it can be, It is about competing not just with the world of today, but also the world of tomorrow. Hello this is Jonathan Jay - and welcome to episode 179 of the Business Buying Strategies podcast. This week I talk with a legendary jewellery entrepreneur who grew his global business almost entirely through acquisition. Gerald Ratner left school at 16 with no qualifications, and went to work in his father's jewellery business. In 1984, he took over the business - and after just six years in charge he had created the world's largest jewellery retail company - with 2,500 stores, 25,000 employees, annual sales of £1.2 billion. Last month I invited Gerald to share the lessons he has learned with my private audience. Afterwards, I joined him on stage to talk about each of the significant acquisitions Gerald made. In this episode, Rob speaks to former CEO of Ratner's Jewellery, previously the UK's largest jewellery chain, speaker, entrepreneur and author Gerald Ratner. To hear Rob's very first interview with Gerald, go to episode 16 on the Disruptors Podcast, he was one of the first people Rob interviewed when he first began podcasting! KEY TAKEAWAYS After the infamous speech, Gerald Ratner lost half a billion. He says that people can learn from him and what he lost. When it happened it was devastating but he is now the happiest he has ever been. Some things really do happen for a reason. What hurt Gerald the most after the downfall, is thinking about all the work he had put into the business over the years and that it had all been taken away because of one foolish joke he made. He also feels sad that people thought he had contempt for his customers, which couldn't be any further from the truth. When Gerald was making millions, money didn't matter to him. He had enough for anything he desired and his real passion and excitement at the time was reserved for the business. This changed when he lost half a billion. He admits that you don't know how to appreciate money until you no longer have it. There is nothing worse than being a failure and there is nothing better than being successful. We are put on this earth to work, challenge things and to compete against others. In business, you get the best brains. Successful business people do not spend their time trying to convince people they are brilliant, they just get on with things. Gerald does not believe money is evil. It's important, making money takes skill and intelligence, you can do incredible things with money and make such a positive impact. No one should feel guilt for having money. You need entrepreneurs to generate profit to pay for services. The private sector supports the public sector. The government could learn a lot from entrepreneurs and businesses. Life is about balance, with work, money, tech and everything else. Spending 14 hour days at work for example, isn't good for anyone. School is about training your brain. Good morning everybody! Welcome back to the Motivated Entrepreneurs. Today is Saturday and we have a book review. And it's called "The Rise and Fall...and Rise Again" by Gerald Ratner. After over 25 years in the jewelry trade, Gerald Ratner was one of the most well-known and successful retailers of his generation. He had built up a highly profitable, multi-million-pound international business, including household names like Ratners, H Samuel, Ernest Jones, Watches of Switzerland, as well as over one thousand stores in the US. Being asked to give the keynote address at the Institute of Directors' annual conference at The Royal Albert Hall was a great honor and should have been the crowning glory on two decades of empire building. The Prawn Sandwich Disaster WHO: In the wake of the 1980s economic boom, Gerald Ratner took over the small family jewellery business. Within just seven years, Ratner had transformed it into a multi-million pound empire and even broke into the American market. The company was immensely popular with the British public as it offered affordable products at bargain prices. Ratner was at the top of his game and had shops on every highstreet. DECISION: In 1991, Ratner was invited to speak at the Institute of Directors conference taking place at the Royal Albert Hall. He sent a draft of his speech to the company heads for approval, and one director advised him to add a couple of gags. In front of 6000 business people and journalists, Ratner read the infamous speech, gags and all. Although the jokes were not intended to offend, the British press had a field day and splashed stories about Ratner's contempt for his customers across the front pages. The public were incensed by his jokes, and felt mocked. The company's shares dropped £500 million in a matter of days. Ratner was eventually fired and would remain penniless and the butt of jokes for years. He would return to the jewellery industry at the turn of the millennium but in a very different format, taking the business online. Hello this is Jonathan Jay - and welcome to episode 137 of the Business Buying Strategies podcast. Now if you are a regular listener to this podcast, you may be as shocked as I was to discover that just a couple of weeks ago, we celebrated our third birthday. Since our very first episode way back in April 2018, we have interviewed and spoken with some remarkable people. In the early days, we used to edit each interview into a number of bitesize segments, and then spread them out over a number of episodes. This was fine at the time, but in hindsight some of the interviews were so rich in content that I believe they deserve to be heard in a single sitting. I have handpicked four of my favourite interviews from the podcast, and Ed, our podcast producer, has re-edited them so you get to hear each one in full. This week, here’s legendary jewellery entrepreneur Gerald Ratner, talking about his business journey, focusing on how he grew his retail empire almost entirely by acquisition. The saying goes that all publicity is good publicity but Gerald Ratner would tell you differently! When Gerald inherited his family jewellery company in 1984, he expanded it from about 150 shops to over 2,000 in just six years, capturing over 50% of the UK's jewellery market. He became known as ‘The King of Bling' and was heralded as a business prodigy. That was up until an eventful speech that Gerald made at an Institute of Directors dinner on 23rd April 1991, where he famously, or infamously, called one of his products ‘total crap' in front of 6,000 business leaders and journalists, saying that one of the sets of earrings he sold was "cheaper than a prawn sandwich from Marks and Spencers but probably wouldn't last as long”. The British media went to town on Gerald and even though he subsequently explained it was meant in good humour, the country's sense of humour wasn't great due to a very deep and dark recession…the public voted with their feet and the company's shares dropped £500 million in a matter of days. This very nearly resulted in the firm's collapse and Gerald Ratner was fired, lost his home, had to take his children out of school and was left severely depressed. It was only when his wife threatened to kick him out that he decided to change. He started a health club from nothing which he sold a few years later for almost £4million and is now involved in an online jewellery business called ‘Gerald Online'. In this episode Kate chats to the legend himself to find out if he would have done anything differently 30 years on!

When investing in a business how do some people never get over working for themselves whilst some go on to found companies turning over 100's of millions and trading worldwide? One man who did exactly that was former owner of the Jewellery chain Ratners. Ratner at the height of his success had approx. 2.5K shops and was on top of the world. I was listening to a live coaching session on Facebook. A young woman won the opportunity to be mentored by 2 men - Rob Moore and Gerald Ratner. During this mentoring session, Ratner said something that stuck with me - You will never get anywhere as a one man band. Both men are hugely successful, Rob Moore has made a fortune in Property and training and Ratner made his fortune with the retail jewelry chain Ratners.Ratner became quite infamous when he literally destroyed his business with one quote. This single quote was attributed to the loss of 122 million in revenue. I can remember the press were all over the poor man, he made an innocent joke about a cheap product he sold and he was hung by the media. The worse thing was, people knew Ratners sold cheap jewellery, you could buy gold earrings for under a £1 but the press went for him and Ratner was eventually sacked from the business he built. Since that speech, Gerald went on a journey to re-invent himself. He went from a £650K salary in the 1990's to 7 years with no money, He cycled to keep his sanity and slowly started to rebuild his life.I read that he came up with an ingenious was to start a health club. He advertised in the paper her was opening and the membership was Free, 500 people signed up to the club before it was open. He then went to the bank and said he had 500 members and needed a loan. He later sold the business for 3.9 million. So the man knows a thing or 2 about business and he is very open about the mistakes he has made.He no longer has the business with hundreds of millions in revenue, however he has rebuilt a new online jewellers with an estimated revenue of 35 million. So whatever you think of the man, he is one of the ultimate re-inventors. But how did he go from hero to zero and back up again. Well for starters you need to understand the power of people, Ratner says, you will never get anywhere as a one man band and you have to delegate. During the interview he tells the student that she has to forget about people letting her down.He goes on to say that people can be control freaks, have 1 store and be perfect, then go nowhere in life. Or you can have 2500 stores and make slime sacrifices. It wont be perfect or the way you want it to be completely, but it's preferable to doing everything you want yourself, everyday in 1 store and going nowhere. Rob Morre then adds, ‘You will get pain in either area' If you do everything yourself you have all the pain yourself, if people come in to help, you have the pain of managing these people and trusting them. Either way is painful, it just depends on if you want to grow or not. You basically need to make a choiceGo alone - control everything, make it perfect and stay on your ownFind the best people you can to help you, trust them, accept things may not be exactly how you want and leverage their time to help you do more.
In this motivating and inspiring episode, Alex speaks with businessman, author and speaker Gerald Ratner. They talk about his famous speech in the Albert Hall, mindset and reinventing yourself. KEY TAKEAWAYS Gerald was born in Richmond, London. His parents ran their first shop here, his Dad expanded to run six shops and they then moved to North West London and this is where Gerald went to school, he passed his 11+ successfully but he then struggled with the transition in secondary school. All Gerald knew as a teenager is that he wanted to work in his Dad's shops. He ended up doing so when he was expelled from his grammar school for not achieving. It took 20 years for Gerald to then take over the family business, this was when his Dad sadly developed a brain tumour. Gerald convinced his father and other directors that he should take over as managing director, at this point the shops were losing money so Gerald completely revamped the jewellers and changed them to appeal to a different demographic. It had a phenomenal effect and several years later the company was turning over 200 million. People who give you advice, often don't give it to you based on helping you but what will actually help them. You have to be wary of advice given to you in business. Gerald was invited to speak at the Royal Albert Hall, he was very excited and on advice of a colleague added in some jokes. However, one of the jokes was taken badly and the journalists ran with it framing Gerald as making fun of those who were struggling financially. Gerald knew this was bad press but he expected it to die down and go away, but this was not the case. Gerald ended up hiring a chairman for the business but this resulted in Gerald being fired by the person he hired! He not only lost his job but also a lot of money, his life completely changed in a very short amount of time. Gerald recognises that the speech and the negative consequences because of it actually benefitted him in the long run. He wouldn't have achieved the things he did afterwards, he wouldn't be here doing this podcast! It was incredibly difficult at the time but he knows this is the way life goes sometimes, there's always a positive somewhere. If you understand that life is full of set backs, your life then becomes easier. You will not sail through life unaffected, once you accept there will be things you can't control and things that will be negative you can then focus on what you can control and move on. If you want to understand what a person thinks about themselves then listen to what they say about other people. If they are unpleasant about others then you know what their true feelings are about themselves. If all someone does is criticise others then they are clearly a very miserable person. There are so many people at the moment who need to reinvent themselves. Gerald is an expert in this, he had to completely start from scratch and he has now released a book on exactly that: Reinvent Yourself BEST MOMENTS "You could say it was in my blood and I was born into it" "We went back to who we were, offering people value for money" "The advice I was given was to benefit them not to benefit me" "However terrible something is there is always a silver lining" "You cannot live with being unpopular with your bank" “I made a mistake, we all make mistakes, it doesn't mean you should be criticised for the rest of your life because you had a moment of bad judgement" "Business is about detail, you're not going to be a success overnight" VALUABLE RESOURCES Business, Wealth and Mindset podcast series ABOUT THE GUEST Gerald Ratner is a British businessman and motivational speaker. He was formerly chief executive officer of the major British jewellery company Ratners Group (now the Signet Group). He achieved notoriety after making a speech in which he jokingly denigrated two of the company's products. He currently speaks around the world at corporate and promotional events. Ratner joined the family business in 1966 and built up an extremely successful chain of jewellers during the 1980s, of which he was CEO. The shops shocked the formerly staid jewellery industry by displaying fluorescent orange posters advertising cut-price bargains and by offering low price ranges. The Ratners Group consisted of Ratners, H. Samuel, Ernest Jones, Leslie Davis, Watches of Switzerland and over 1000 shops in the US including Kays. The speech The shops and their wares were extremely popular with the public, until Ratner made a speech addressing a conference of the Institute of Directors at the Royal Albert Hall on 23 April 1991. During the speech, he commented: We also do cut-glass sherry decanters complete with six glasses on a silver-plated tray that your butler can serve you drinks on, all for £4.95. People say, "How can you sell this for such a low price?", I say, "because it's total crap." He compounded this by going on to remark that one of the sets of earrings was "cheaper than an M&S prawn sandwich but probably wouldn't last as long." Ratner's comments have become textbook examples of why CEOs should choose their words carefully. In the furore that ensued, customers stayed away from Ratner shops. After the speech, the value of the Ratner group plummeted by around £500 million, which very nearly resulted in the firm's collapse. Ratner hired a chairman in an attempt to stabilise the situation, but was subsequently fired by the new company leader in November 1992. The group then changed its name to Signet Group in September 1993. Today, Ratner's speech is still famous in the corporate world as an example of the value of branding and image over quality. Such gaffes are now sometimes called "doing a Ratner", and Ratner himself has acquired the sobriquet "The Sultan of Bling". Ratner has said in his defence that his remarks were not meant to be taken seriously. He also largely blamed the aggressiveness and deliberately wrongful interpretation of several media outlets for the severe consumer reaction. He set up a health club in Henley-on-Thames in 1996, which was sold for £3.9m in 2001. Ratner now runs, in collaboration with SB&T International Ltd, an export manufacturing company based in India and the online jewellery business Gerald Online. In 2013, during a visit to India for the inaugural eTailing India Expo, Ratner announced that he would be entering the Indian market. My guest this week is a British household name, he took over his family’s jewellery business in 1984. By 1990 he had grown it from 130 stores to 2500. But everything changed overnight in 1991 when, during a speech for the Institute of Directors, he described a Ratner’s sherry decanter as ‘total crap’. In December 2020, he published his latest book called Reinvent Yourself co-authored with Rob Moore. It shows you how to embrace change, take the unpopular path and become a business chameleon. Voted as one of the top 10 best public speakers, Gerald Ratner will share his story and the rollercoaster ride that he experienced when he had nothing else to lose. Bio Gerald Ratner is best known as the former millionaire chief executive of the major British jewellery chain Ratners Jewellery, when he achieved notoriety after making a speech which caused the company’s bankruptcy. Gerald Ratner based his philosophy of business on his experiences as a boy in Petticoat Lane Market. He observed that “the people who shouted the loudest and appeared to give the best offers sold the most”. On this basis he built up an extremely successful chain of jewellers during the 1980s, Ratners Jewellery, of which he was chief executive. The shops shocked the formerly staid jewellery industry by displaying fluorescent orange posters advertising cut price bargains, and by offering low price ranges. Gerald Ratner took over the family jewellery chain in the mid 80s, becoming one of Britain’s best known businessmen. He transformed it from 130 stores with sales of £13m to a public company with 2,500 stores and sales of over £1.2bn. By 1990, Ratner’s was the world’s largest jewellery retailer with profits in excess of £120m. Following a widely reported gaffe in which he compared his products to M&S prawn sandwiches, Gerald was forced to sell the business. Reduced to virtually nothing and shunned by banks and prospective employers, he eventually picked himself up and clawed his way back. The internet jewellery business is now the largest in the sector, perhaps presaging a return to the high street. Subsequently Ratner has set up new, much smaller businesses including a health club and an on-line jewellery store collaboration called Gerald Online. After turning around his fortunes, Gerald talks with typical candour and a great deal of humour about the rollercoaster journey. He even raises a smile when he produces The Sun’s list of the ’50 biggest mistakes of all time’ – in which his is ranked top! He now runs, the UK’s largest online jewellery business Gerald Online. Gerald Ratner is the former CEO of the Ratners jewellery empire, and a professional corporate speaker. As a young man, Ratner worked his way up the ladder of his family company, eventually turning it into the biggest jewellery chain in the world. And then, at the height of his powers, a single speech changed his fortune forever, and sent his life and his business into a downwards spiral that took some years to recover from. His story — and that infamous moment — is now the subject of business degrees the world over, and his name still trends on Twitter several times a year at moments of corporate blunder. This is one of the most interesting episodes we've had in a while — a true rollercoaster of a story, with a born entrepreneur whose colourful career has come to be defined by just a few words. With his famously deadpan sense of humour, Ratner talks us through the meteoric rise of the Ratners Group, the morning leading up to that speech, and why, if you want to get something done, it sometimes pays to impersonate a police officer.
Natalie is talking to Gerald Ratner about the changing world of business and what brings him happiness. As someone who has experienced both huge highs and lows in his life he discusses with Natalie how he has built successful businesses during his career and achieving the right balance between success and happiness. This is a great opportunity to hear about why with only one life we all need to reinvent ourselves along the way to achieve a life that is balanced and happy. KEY TAKEAWAYS The only time I felt good was when I was cycling and that was when I understood the benefits of exercise and that led to me opening my first health club. If people signed up it showed there was a market for it. To be part of the human race you have to have suffered in some way. Success is something where you never feel you have enough so you keep pushing. There is always going to be someone richer than you its about achieving a balance between happiness and success. You have to know when to stop and slowdown. Many of the most successful people are those who change roles throughout their careers. To be successful in a job you need to be able to achieve and enjoy it. You only have one life so being able to reinvent yourself if you are not good at or enjoying your job is important. You can go your own way and you don’t have to stay doing things that make you unhappy. The most exciting thing about business is the risk. You can takeover an existing business to start again and there are less start-up costs. Just walk into some else’s business there are going to be loads of opportunities. Would you prefer to read Gerald Ratner's podcast interview instead? Hello and welcome to Small Business Snippets, the podcast from smallbusiness.co.uk. I'm your host, Tim Adler. Today we have as our guest author, motivational speaker and businessman, Gerald Ratner. Gerald inherited his father's jewellery business in 1984. Within six years, he turned a small retailer into a multi-million-pound empire. Every British high street seemed to have a Ratners in the ‘80s. I myself remember buying a snazzy gilt tie clip from Ratners as a teenager. Gerald made Ratners so successful that it seemed that every British high street had one of his stores, or one of the associated companies he had bought up, H Samuel or Ernest Jones. Ratner seemed the quintessential ‘80s British success story, which saw Gerald mixing with Margaret Thatcher, until one fateful day in April 1991. When he was guest speaker at the Institute of Directors, he addressed 6,000 businesspeople and journalists at the Royal Albert Hall. In a moment of what can only be described as hubris, Gerald managed to undo not only his entire life, but his empire, in less than ten seconds. Gerald was describing how his company sold a cut-glass sherry decanter for just £4.95. ‘People say to me, “How can you sell this for such a low price? I say because it's total crap.”’ Ignoring the maxim that if you're in a hole, stop digging, Gerald went on to say that his company sold a pair of gold earrings for less than £1. ‘Some people say that's even cheaper than a prawn sandwich from Marks and Spencer. I have to say that the sandwich will probably last longer.’ Now, this got an enormous laugh in the Royal Albert Hall that afternoon, but the next day, the tabloids eviscerated him. Now I have to disclose some tiny sliver of connection to this moment, as my wife worked on Gerald's PR account, and I remember the panic which went on in her office the next day, how Gerald was pushed onto TV for a mea culpa interview with Terry Wogan, but the damage had been done. Shares in Ratners lost £500m within a few days, 2,500 shops had to shut and Gerald was left both clinically depressed and ousted from his own family business. But in a lesson to us all in resilience and reinvention, Gerald bounced back as a health club owner, which has sold for nearly £4m in 2001, before launching an online jewellery business. Gerald has reinvented himself multiple times throughout his life, from jeweller to gym owner to online retailer, and now to public speaker and author. Oh, I should mention that last month, Gerald had a new book out: Reinvent Yourself: A Brand New Guide for Reinventing Your Life. How to Be Successful, Achieve Your Potential, and Create Lasting Opportunity for Business Success. Tim: Hi Gerald, welcome to the podcast. Gerald: Hi, Tim. Thanks for inviting me. So, you've obviously had a lot of time to think about this. In hindsight, what were the lessons that you learned from that moment? Gerald: Yeah, I’ve had 30 years to think about it and as they say, sit in haste and repent at your leisure. What I've thought about it is that I should have been a bit more careful when I was invited to make that speech at the Albert Hall. I tried to put in a couple of jokes, to get people to laugh, because somehow when you're doing a speech, it breaks the ice. It was before I was doing speeches, really, so I was a bit nervous to do it in front of all those people. And once you've made a joke, when people laugh, they're on your side. So you know, you feel more relaxed, the nerves go away a bit more, you’re more confident. That's how you getting feedback from the audience, approval from the audience. But then, I suppose in hindsight, why try and take that option? You don't need to do it. I was, as you said, I was very successful businessman at the time, I didn't need to feel so insecure. But there you go – I was quite young at the time, about 40. It was just a mistake. What can I say? Well, it's interesting. It may because I mean, obviously, you've very successfully reinvented yourself since. And it does make me think that we British have a strange attitude towards business failure. I was reading an interview with a Dutch boss – this American tech company, snowflake. He said recently that in the US failure is seen as a badge of honour. While in Europe, there's a huge social stigma about it. He said that you go bust in Europe, you end up in economic slavery until the end of time. Do you think that Britain's got to change the way that that we think about business failure? Gerald: Well, I do think that failure is part of success, that you're quite right. In the States, if you look at all the successful – including Amazon – all these successful businessmen. Amazon lost 90 per cent of its value, after the .com boom, but it didn't really bother Jeff Bezos, because he had faith in the business. Nobody's going to sail through life without making any mistakes or failures. And certainly, I've learned a lot from my failures. And you are a better business. I'd rather be richer and not as good, but the fact is that you do learn lessons and you're better for it. I don't think it's right that there's such a stigma attached to failure that you're written off. And, you know, the first mistake you make I think that it's a shame, and it's a bit of a British disease. No, I agree. I think you talk to Americans and they have a completely different attitude towards business failure. Now, obviously, we've been all stuck in this dreadful pandemic. One of the things that we've seen is conscious support from shoppers, for small businesses and independent retailers. Do you think that's going to be a permanent change? That there's going to be a permanent change away from the big retailers? Or is this just a flash in the pan? Gerald: Well, we're all creatures of habit. And once we get into a certain way of doing things, we like to repeat them. I don't think in any way, anything will go back to normal. Having said that, it's not going to stay the same – there will be a shift back to the way we live before. But I don't think a complete shift back. My business of doing speeches in front of audiences, I don't think that they'll be as many and a lot of them will be done online, retail is exactly the same. I think that the share that the online businesses have gained through this, they won't lose completely on day one of the recovery. Hmm, I know. I mean, before the pandemic, you said that the high street was pretty much dead. And the out of town shopping centres would survive, and out of those, John Lewis would probably be last man standing. Is that you still your view that the high street’s dead? Gerald: Well, I wrote that article – it was a page in the Mail on Sunday – this year, believe it or not, just seems a long time ago, but it was before the pandemic. Yeah. And I said that the high street is dead. Turn it into homes. And I think that that's even more relevant now since the pandemic. I think the high street is dead and it won't recover. And it's just the weakest of all the ways that we can shop. I mean, there's the shopping malls. There's the internet, there's the out of town shopping. And then finally, there's the high street and the high street offers the least. It's the least convenient in terms of parking. It's the least convenient in terms of walking around in the pouring rain. And it's the least convenient in terms of the fact that it's tired. A lot of the high street stores comprise of charity shops, which the government made a mistake allowing them in with no rates and reduced rent, because they didn't do anybody any favours, because they're not an attraction. For you to go to the high street, you need quite a lot of things to attract you – maybe the banks, but they've gone. But a charity shop is not something that you make a special journey for, as are betting shops, and they’re now closing, as are the loan shops that opened up lending you money, pawn brokers and stuff like that. There's just nothing there. I think with the strength of the internet, it just can't be sustained. I mean, I definitely feel the high street is gone. And I don't think that'll be the first member of the four ways we shop to go. You know, I think it's when you look at Next results today, they've made up for all their lost sales from the high street online. You wonder why they bother with all those expensive shops and all the staff and all the costs that go with it. But do you think do you think there are any retail sectors that that will survive as in-store experiences? And I'm thinking there are certain things that you have to physically touch or try on, like shoes, I would have thought it's difficult to do that online, or perfume? Gerald: Yeah, I mean, strangely enough, when I had my hair cut, my barber was saying that he's very lucky that his is the only business that is not affected by the internet. He's not a competitor. Now, he's one of the few people that cannot substitute his business with online. So sometimes, you know, be careful what you wish for. But yeah, I just think there will be obviously something out there for people to buy. But it'll just be it'll be just like when we started with online and online was about five or ten per cent, and bricks and mortar was 90 per cent. I think that could well reverse. We could get sort of 80-90 per cent online, five or 10 per cent bricks and mortar. I know that sounds absolutely extreme. But everything is pointing [that way] as technology is getting better and better. And then we've got this green issue about travelling in the whole time. I think people will want to travel less. I just think that's, I can't put a time on it, but I just think it's inevitable, though. That is the trend. Okay, so I'm guessing that if you were starting again, now, as a young man, as an entrepreneur, entrepreneurial young man, you probably wouldn't go into retail. Gerald: No, not in retail. Tim: If you were starting now, which business would you go into today if you are starting again? Gerald: Well, I think that you've got to do something. And the timing is very important. Because I was in the jewellery business in the ‘80s. Now, we became the world's largest jewellery business, and we were very successful. But it's not all down to what we did. We were lucky in terms of the fact that the ‘80s was a great time to be in selling jewellery in retail. There's never been a time like it. Basically, because young people, the demographics in the sections of 16-24, had a lot of disposable income, and we catered for them which the other jewellers didn't. But nevertheless, we couldn't have done that so successfully today. Then went into the health club business in the ‘90s. That was the right time because there wasn't a lot of competition and it was just building, you know, people just becoming health conscious. Not like they are today – a lot of people were not health conscious. There was a growing market there, not much competition Then I went into online business at the turn the century, long before it became fashionable. And it became very cheap to get your product online, pay per clicks (PPC). We were selling an eternity ring. Because there were only about 50 jewellers out there, it only used to cost us about £3 to buy pay per clicks for that. Today, that same eternity ring cost us £250, instead of £3, because there's so much competition, so I'm not interested in that. The business I would go in is somewhere where there isn't a lot of competition. In the growing market, where I think the market is going to grow, but there's not a lot of people that have cottoned on to it yet. And you're not going to share which business you've identified? Gerald: Well, it might not be anything to do with the internet, believe it or not, even after what I've said. A friend of mine is just sold his business who supplies hangers to Marks and Spencer. He just sold his business for £60m. There's nothing particularly high tech or disruptive about hangers. I think the key is if you do something differently, and you do it well, that's all you need to do. You need to be an expert in your field. I mean, I like to think that I know a bit about jewellery, whereas other competitors at the time didn't. We basically displayed all our diamond rings at 42 inches from the ground because the average woman was 5”4, and the trajectory of our eye would fall perfectly at 42 inches. Other jewellers wouldn't bother with niceties like that. It’s the silly little things like that that are important in business. Oh, yeah. It's the details that are important. And in a similar vein, if you could go back in time to yourself as a young man, what advice would you say? What would you say to a young Gerald Ratner about how to behave in business, or if you have a maxim in business? Gerald: Well, what I did was right up until the speech, what I did was take risks, which you need to do. I mean, we're not schoolteachers or policemen or hospital workers, however wonderful they are. We’re people who can get make a lot of money very quickly or lose a lot of money very quickly, we’re born in a risk business. So I was prepared to risk everything. I went to America, was told that America was a graveyard for British retailers. And my shareholders said, ‘If you fail, we'll turn on you with venom.’ I didn't really need to go to America, because I had 1,000 shops here that were making a lot of money at 50 per cent of the jewellery market, but I wanted to go to America. I like taking risks. I think that, as my co-author in my new book says that, if you don't risk anything, you risk everything. And your business is about risks, calculated risks. I don't smoke – I'd like to, but it's a risk. If it was only a slight risk, I would smoke. But as a businessman, because it's a quite a big risk, the odds are not in my favour. So that's something I can't do. I look at the odds. But then you can back a horse that's three to one on and it can lose, but it's unlikely to. That's the way I look at it, as a young Gerald going into business is, don't try and think about your pension. Don't try and think about safety. Go out, if you feel you're confident that you've got the right formula, go for it, and do whatever it takes. Tim: Well, that's a very good note to end on, Gerald, and thank you for your thoughts and advice. Thank you very much for coming on the podcast. Over US$11bn is spent on PR and the burning question is "how do we measure the impact?"Actually now we can, with even more detail now thanks to technology but with some of the basic principles which have been in place for over 30 years. I heard them from one of the original authors in Singapore in 1996!Firstly, let's talk about the Active Communications Index: our simple formula which addresses the need to measure inputs before worrying about outputs.Content x Channels x Frequency. There's more on our website about this here. Then I am going to take you through some platforms which can be used for free or low cost, and also one of the biggest service providers. Coveragebook.com is a platform we use as measurement and evaluation is such a big part of where PR is at the moment. This service combines both strong analytics and excellent design. It visualises the impact of campaigns in a single comprehensive, intelligent and user-friendly way. It's really useful because it tells you immediately the page views and domain authority of the media your coverage appears in.Sentiment analysis is important because it's not enough to be spoken about, as Gerald Ratner found out in 1991 when he lost GBP500m overnight; there was too much negative publicity. TalkWalker.com has ‘free social media monitoring tools’ to track all sentiment. I've been using this platform to measure our work on the Ineos Grenadier launch today.Carma is the one of the largest media monitoring and sentiment analysis firms in the world with offices in 5 countries and over 500 staff. Really there isn't much this company can't do and it's global so that helps for international campaigns.I mention the standards body so you can go and find out more if you want to. AMEC (the International Association for the Measurement and Evaluation of Communication) is on hand to help. Great tools to check out include the Integrated Evaluation Framework (IEF), a useful guide to building a solid measurement framework based on industry best practice, and the Measurement Maturity Mapper (M3), a diagnostic tool designed to help you understand where you are in your measurement journey.Professor Jim Macnamara of the University of Technology Sydney created this IEF and I remember meeting in Singapore in 1996 when he headed up the Mass Communications Group of Australia. He was sharing the vision of the importance of measurement 30 years ago and deserves credit today for the fact that he is keeping the industry-relevant and measurement-based. He sold his business to Carma. If you like this podcast, then subscribe to our newsletter herePlease visit our blog post on PR for business please visit our site:https://www.eastwestpr.com/blogs/I also talk about SPEAK|pr - our 5 Step Methodology for entrepreneurs to manage their own PR. Have you ever wanted to reinvent yourself, embrace change and change your direction in life? Rob talks us through the best ways to evolve your mindset, progress in business and in life and disrupt and challenge yourself. Working alongside renowned British businessman Gerald Ratner, famous for making one of the biggest gaffs in business history, Rob looks at the amazing way he has managed to reinvent himself, pivot into other industries and become a success again and again. KEY TAKEAWAYS Every challenge that you perceive to have a downside also has an upside. It may be easy to look at another person's life and be able to see the downside and upsides, but the true wisdom is being able to do this in your own life. Embrace change. Many people fear change and have the need for control which can create a lot of tension. If you learn to embrace change and see it as a thing of evolution and progress then you can organically or dramatically reinvent yourself depending on your situation. Study trends. If you can get a sense of where the world is going, you can embrace a new media, market, and abilities to earn a living. Old dogs can learn new tricks. In reality, you can learn better when you get older, It's just about your mindset. You need to be in the mindset that it doesn't matter what age you are, you can always learn a new skill. Curiosity is about wanting to learn new things and being fascinated with the world and seeing new opportunities. That is the greatest open mindset for learning and development. Unlearning bad habits. Often we imagine that we know something, and we don't. Let go of those bad habits that are causing continual mistakes or pushing people away from you. Disrupt yourself. Challenge your thinking and your strategies. Think about what you would change about yourself and your company looking from the outside in and apply these thoughts so that you can evolve and improve before your competition does. Continual testing. A testing mindset solves a lot of problems, it makes you a lot more risk-averse, brave and courageous. Have a life plan. With your business or career, split your time 70/30 between your main income and your second income. If you're all in on one thing it will be difficult to evolve and reinvent yourself. Continually be uncomfortable. Allow yourself to become comfortably uncomfortable, whereby you are stepping out of your comfort zone, but it is not so scary that you are not likely to go through with it. Hang around with people from different walks of life. These may be people older than you, younger than you or people from different backgrounds with different beliefs. You can learn a lot from people and it can keep you challenging your own beliefs and helps you to reinvent yourself. What's the future vision of who you are? If you don't have a future vision for yourself, then you don't know who you are going to reinvent yourself into and then you will be forced to reinvent yourself, often to someone else's criteria. How would you go about earning 100K in 29 days? KEY TAKEAWAYS I have a property background, so selling property package deals to others could be a good way of starting. You could find a block and make that 100K back in one deal for example. There is a ‘hack' in England where you can walk into an Estate Agents for free, be shown round properties for free but they don't charge buyers free only the sellers. Then the second thing I would do is to create a mastermind training business. This has very little overheads only an internet connection and some kind of experience. Everyone has some kind of experience they could teach. What is it that you know well? You could run a business or ‘writing a book' mastermind which could be £5,000 a head, and you'll be on your way in gaining the 100K. I would go down to all the Estate Agents on the high street and say I have money to invest in properties viewing as many of them as possible. Alongside this go to as many networking, business events as possible with the aim of getting finance. Gerald Ratner created a gym from scratch by doing this. He couldn't get any finance from any banks so he put a newspaper ad out for memberships before the gym even existed. Luckily enough the bank manager's wife had bought one which he was then able to leverage to get the finance. He then used those memberships as collateral to finance the gym. He then sold it for £4 million. There are estate agents in every city. There are lots of networking and business angel events. Today the barriers are really low to making money. You have to have the right mindset, and business model to make money, however. There is a paradox in hard work. There is a way of thinking that says if you work hard then you will get rewarded in the future. But as an Entrepreneur you can be working all day really hard on nothing productive, making no money. I think you have to work smart and use leverage, rather than working all the hours possible. You have to find something that you enjoy and are passionate about. What was your entry into business? I started as a struggling artist when I was 25/26 in thousands of pounds of debt. I went to a property event where I met my now business partner Mark Homer, after being told about the event by a gallery owner. About six weeks later he had got me a job in a property company. We then bought 20 properties in my first year, and then 50 in two years. We then sourced deals for other people in the next five years. What is the key to life? I think the purpose in life is growth and self-actualisation. I think that a big myth is that happiness is key to life. If you are happy there is nothing to strive for after that. Whenever you are getting to the place that you feel happy when you always want to get to the next place and then the next. No one is always happy, because it's impossible. I'm happy when I'm moving forward, growing. I try to balance the paradoxes in my own head. I try and balance out the negatives and positives in my head. You have to have gratitude and a level of dissatisfaction at the same time to push forward. As much as it is good to be relentless this can come across as greedy, and power. Gratitude for what you have is important. BEST MOMENTS ‘There is a ‘hack' in England where you can walk into an Estate Agents for free, but they don't charge buyers free.' ‘You could run a business or writing a book deal can be a way of creating a mastermind.' ‘Gerald sold memberships before he even had a gym.' ‘You have to hustle over the 29 days.' ‘If you walk into Estate agents they don't as for any qualifications.' ‘Most other places with the consultancy you have to pay upfront, whereas Estate agents don't.' ‘British people are little worried about ‘get rich quick.' ‘It took me 27 years to get into £50,000 and then four years to get out of it and make a million.' ‘There is a paradox in hard work.' ‘I really do prefer smart work, and leverage over hard work.' ‘Entrepreneurs are always thinking, not switching off.' ‘You have to be able to put the hours in.' ‘You have to work hard enough to not have to work hard.' ‘I think that most things are monetizable, as long as you enjoy it.' ‘Everything has got experience in something.' ‘You can learn, do and teach in one year.' ‘What do you already know?' ‘You have to be doing what you teach.' ‘Information is a real commodity.' ‘Meaningful progress towards a worthy goal is happiness.' ‘I want challenges and I want things to be hard.' ‘You do have to be careful what you wish for.' ‘Being satisfied with what you have can be a stronger motivator than being dissatisfied.' ‘You have to practice gratitude.' Most people want more, whether it's more time, more money, and more choice to do what they want to do. However, they lack a clear structure to get what they want. Most people live dealing with the biggest demons in life, overwhelm and procrastination, and thus get stuck not being able to move forward. In a world today so full of choices it's hard for a lot of people to know what's the right choice for them. Never before has it been easier to start a passion project on the side allowing more time and money to be created when you know exactly how. Never before has it been as important to start generating a second income source so that more security is created, however again dealing with those demons, procrastination and overwhelm, gets in the way. In April of 1991 the Ratner Group was the premiere British jewelry company. They owned about 50% of the market and were the place where "Working class boys bought rings for working class girls." It took Gerald Ratner minutes to cost the company nearly half a billion pounds. Today that's known as "Pulling a Ratner" Produced by Digital Buzz Hosted by Dave Plough

In 1984, Gerald Ratner took over the company that his Father and Uncle started. At that time the Ratner's jewellery chain had 130 stores. By 1990 it had 2,500 stores and 25,000 employees with an annual turnover of £1.2 billion and profits of £121 million. How did he grow so fast? Acquisition! In Gerald's own words... "It's a lot easier to acquire a competitor rather than to organically grow. It's quicker, easier and more cost effective. I'm totally convinced by that." Gerald goes on to mention something critical about the way you buy companies. Something that he wasn't worried about in the 1980s and what ultimately led to the fall of the Ratners chain. What is that one thing? And how can you avoid it? You'll also hear from tax specialist Chris O'Hara who advises what to do when buying a company that's been involved in a tax avoidance scheme. It's the Easter edition of the Big Idea Podcast, so it's only natural that we talk about... Hot Cross Buns! Specifically, how Hot Cross Buns can teach you a thing or two about growing your business - especially if you think you only sell one "thing" and can't possibly branch out into other products or cross sell something similar to people who currently HATE what you sell. We talk about asset creation, and why EVERYBODY should be creating, building, buying and sweating assets on a weekly, if not daily basis. We give an insight into one of the latest assets in OUR arsenal - the audiobook recording of Big Ideas for Small Businesses, where John recently spent two days in the studio, recording an asset that will still be bringing in constant revenue 20 or 30 years from now. This month's Book of the Month was "The Rise and Fall... and rise again" by Gerald Ratner. It's a fascinating insight into the world of a man who had it all, the world at his feet, and then told one "crap" joke, and lost it all. More specifically, it's a great insight into how Gerald Ratner had everything taken away from him - apart from the knowledge between his ears, and his drive to succeed - and how he clawed his way back to become successful again. John's eight year old son is collecting mentors. Like just about every other 8 year old kid, he wants to be a famous YouTuber like DanTDM or Stampylonghead. But like John way back in 2000, he "knows that he knows nothing" - so he's been seeking out mentors. Other kids like him that are a little bit ahead of him in his Youtube journey, and who can help give him the blueprint to succeed. We review February's Book of the Month by Neville Wright, which earned rave reviews, and also introduced March's book of the month by Gerald Ratner, which having seen Gerald speak before should be very entertaining (and certainly not "crap!"). We delve into how and why accountability works for us, and show you how we've used it to publish a book, learn to play golf, and even get a lazy entrepreneur doing 100 press ups every day! Finally, we talk about public speaking - This is something that both John and Jason do quite a lot of these days. But it wasn't always the case, so we look into the secret behind confident public speaking.
