Welcome back to TableSetters, your go-to spot for all things baseball. Steve and Devin are here to break down the latest happenings in the MLB world, and there's a lot to talk about! First up, Aaron Boone's sticking around for the 2025 season after the Yankees picked up his option. Boone's been at the helm for seven seasons now, leading the team to the postseason six times. GM Brian Cashman's all in on him, and Boone's ready to get back to work. We'll hear from him in a press conference on Monday to get his take on the upcoming year. Switching gears to the offseason, the Yankees are about to sit down with Juan Soto and his agent, Scott Boras, for an in-person meeting. The Yankees and Mets are both hot on Soto's trail, but there are many other teams in the mix too. Soto's one of the biggest free-agent names out there, and his decision will make waves. Nolan Arenado is also popping up in trade rumors. The Cardinals might move the 10-time Gold Glover if he agrees to waive his no-trade clause, and the Yankees could be a landing spot. Sure, Arenado didn't have his best offensive season in 2024, but he's still an elite defender, and the Yankees could use that. Out in Boston, the Red Sox are looking at some big pitching moves. Instead of going after the top free agents, they're eyeing a trade for a big-name starter, like Garrett Crochet from the White Sox. With a strong farm system, they've got the pieces to make it happen. Meanwhile, the Reds are in a tough spot financially. With Bally Sports' bankruptcy looming, they're losing a chunk of revenue and might be forced to cut back on player spending for 2025. It could make for a tricky offseason in Cincinnati. And in Philly, there's a big shakeup in the front office. Preston Mattingly, the son of former MLB star Don Mattingly, has been promoted to GM. He'll be working alongside Sam Fuld, who'll eventually transition to president of business operations in 2026 after finishing his MBA. That's all for now! Be sure to follow us on Instagram and Twitter @tablesetterspod for all the latest. Catch you next time on TableSetters!

The New York Yankees are done with Spring Training, but are they done with their roster? Some guys were told they were making the team and going to Houston, while others may go to Houston but get sent down when injured players come back. Stacey discusses all the moves and names we know right now. The situation is fluid and can change between now and Thursday's opener. Clarke Schmidt made his final start of the Spring and looks ready for the regular season. Clay Holmes, Caleb Ferguson, and Luke Weaver also look ready for the bullpen. Speaking of the bullpen, Nick Burdi made it. DJ LeMahieu is going on the IL, and of course, there were conflicting timelines. One day, GM Brian Cashman said DJ could be back in time for the home opener, and the following day, Aaron Boone said DJ might not be back then and that he's getting an MRI and staying back in Tampa while the team goes to Houston and Arizona. So what gives? Who knows. Stacey discusses what could be the actual problem when it comes to reporting on injuries. Join the LOY Insiders Club! https://joinsubtext.com/lockedonyankeesWhat is the insider's club? https://youtu.be/BItWi-kbIJY?t=1468Subscribe on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCH5857VCyYLAzsWr9vHk4sQSupport Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!Amazon Fire TVFire TV recently created Fire TV Channels to deliver a constant supply of the latest videos from your favorite sports brands, all for free. The New York Yankees have a bright future! On Saturday after the Yankees beat the Blue Jays 10-9, some of the Yankees prospects took on some of the Blue Jays prospects in the new Spring Breakout game that MLB introduced this Spring, and they won 9-1. Spencer Jones showed why he's the number one prospect in the Yankees system and also showed why they don't want to give him away. Lefty Brock Selvidge made the start and looked great, and Stacey recaps how the rest of the kids did on Saturday. Then, could Luis Gil be the fifth starter in the rotation? Gil has looked great so far in Spring Training and his name has been brought up as a possibility by GM Brian Cashman. Then Stacey recaps the Yankees' weekend of baseball, including the win against the Jays on Saturday and two losses against the Pirates and Red Sox on Friday and Sunday, respectively. There were some good performances and some iffy performances, and DJ LeMahieu fouled a ball off his foot. There were also roster moves and some injury updates, and the Yankees named Nestor Cortes as their Opening Day starter in Gerrit Cole's absence. Oh, right, he doesn't need Tommy John surgery, and we talk about that too! Join the LOY Insiders Club! https://joinsubtext.com/lockedonyankees What is the insider's club? https://youtu.be/BItWi-kbIJY?t=1468 Subscribe on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCH5857VCyYLAzsWr9vHk4sQ Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! Factor Meals Head to FactorMeals.com/lockedonmlb50 and use code lockedonmlb50 to get 50% off. Amazon Fire TV Fire TV recently created Fire TV Channels to deliver a constant supply of the latest videos from your favorite sports brands, all for free. On today's podcast: 1) The Palestinian Authority is working with US officials on a plan to run Gaza after the ongoing war is over, with one of its top leaders arguing that Israel's aim to fully defeat Hamas is unrealistic and the militant group should instead join it under a new governing structure. 2) President Joe Biden's son Hunter was indicted on nine federal tax charges in a development that will become a political headache for the White House and Democrats as the 2024 campaign ramps up. 3) Treasury yields rose as traders pared expectations for the Federal Reserve to ease monetary policy aggressively next year after a better-than-forecast jobs report. Full Transcript: Good morning. I'm Nathan Hager and I'm Amy Morris. Here are the stories we're following today. This morning, we are learning the Palestinian authority is working with the US on a plan to run Gaza after the fighting ends. Palestinian Prime Minister Mohammad stay I spoke with Bloomberg News. He says his preferred outcome would be to include Hamas as a junior partner in a post war administration, if they are ready to come to ground, to an agreement and really accept the political platform of the PLO, accept the tools of struggle because this is an important point of difference between us and them, and then there will be a room for talk. Otherwise it's just simply things will continue to be the same. Prime Minister Mohammad Staya also tells Bloomberg he does not believe Hamas can be eradicated by Israel. His comments are at odds with the stated aim of Israel's military campaign to wipe out the militant group following the deadly October seventh terrorist attack. The war in Gaza so far has killed more than sixteen thousand Palestinians. That's according to the Hamas run Health Ministry. Now the major legal news breaking overnight in the US that could be a new political headache for President Biden. The president's son Hunter has been indicted on nine new federal tax charges in Los Angeles. That's on top of the federal gun charges he's facing in Delaware. We get more from Bloomberg's David Voriakis. It expands on an earlier agreement in which he would have pleaded guilty in federal court in Delaware and in July and avoided prison. Under this indictment, he could theoretically be sentenced to as much as seventeen years in prison. What government alleges is, I will quote, the defendants spent this money on drugs, escorts and girlfriends, luxury hotels and rental properties, exotic cars, clothing, and other items of a personal nature. In short, everything by his taxi. Bloomberg's David Voriaki says. These new charges come as House Republicans plan to vote next week on formalizing their impeachment inquiry into President. By this latest indictment against Hunter, Biden does not offer evidence that the President benefited from or was involved in his son's activities. Also in the twenty twenty four election, Amy Republican Ron DeSantis's campaign is dealing with more disappointing news, as Bloomberg said, Baxter reports a fundraising event for the Florida governor tend to be canceled. About three thousand donors were invited to a Never Back Down super Pack lunch and to be held before this week's debate. A ten thousand dollars contribution would have given donors access to the lunch where Casey Dessentis was scheduled to speak, as well as a ticket to the debate itself, and an invite to a post debate celebration with a governor. Well, just a couple of days prior to the date, Never Back Down decided to cancel. Scott Wagner, who leads the pack, cited lack of interest. In November, a similar event raised one million dollar dollar, aed Baxter, Bloomberg Radio Right, Thank You ed Elsewhere in politics, more fallout for those IVY League presidents who struggled to denounce campus anti semitism on Capitol Hill this week. The presidents of Harvard and the University of Pennsylvania have issued statements clarifying their positions, but now investment manager Ross Stevens has withdrawn a one hundred million dollar donation that he had planned to give to Pen. Those details from Bloomberg's Charlie Pellett. Stevens is co founder of stone Ridge Asset Management, and he had pledged a stake in the firm to the Ivy League University to fund the Stevens Center for Innovation in Finance. According to a letter to university officials, Lawyers representing the firm said the school had violated anti discrimination and anti harassment policies it had accepted in order to become an investor in New York. Charlie Pellett Bloomberg Radio. Okay, Charlie, thank you. Turning to markets, Investors are waiting for a critical data point this morning, the November jobs report, coming ahead of next week's FED meeting, their last of twenty twenty three. Let's get a preview from Bloomberg's Michael McKee. We should be seeing signs of a slowing economy in the labor market, but economists say not just yet. The consensus forecast is November saw the pace of hiring pick up, while unemployment was unchanged. About thirty thousand jobs won't be new, they will just reflect the return of autoworkers to pay rolls after the UAW strike, but hiring in healthcare, leisure and hospitality and government should keep healthy numbers Beyond manufacturing, markets are pricing a lower than anticipated number. However, so strength could lead to higher rates as investors worry the FED may not yet be done with rate hikes. Michael McKee, Bloomberg Radio, Mike, thank you. Turning overseas, the Japanese yen has surged over the past day. Traders betting the Bank of Japan will scrap the world's last negative interest rate regime sooner than previously thought the advance nerational talent. You know. We gave up quite a few, you know, special pitchers in the package. But I think everybody, everybody in Pinchrofts is looking forward to having won Sodo Grissom, you know, for do all those guys, you know, and so it's going to be a fun year. GM Brian Cashman said the Yankees are in it to win it. He says signing having Soto on the team this season could help their chances of signing them to a long term deal. He's due to be a free agent. Cashman on Monday will be in California to meet with Japanese free agent picture Yashinobu Yamamoto, and the Mets also want to sign him. The Orioles have been owned by the Angelos family since nineteen ninety three of Bloomberg report that they could be for sale and in talks with billionaire and Baltimore native David rubenstaff doms dash Ellen. Bloomberg sports from coast to coast, from New York to San Francisco, Boston to Washington, DC, nationwide on Sirisxam, the Bloomberg Business app in Bloomberg dot Com. This is Bloomberg Daybreak. Good morning, I'm Nathan Hager. What comes the day after Israel's war with Hamas. The Palestinian authority says it is working with the US on a plan to run the Gaza strip after the fighting ends. One of its top leaders argues Israel's aim to fully defeat the Palestinian militant group Hamas is unrealistic. Palestinian Prime Minister Mohammad Staya says his preferred outcome would be for Hamas to become a junior partner under the Palestine Liberation Organization, helping to build a new independent state that includes the West Bank, Gaza, and East Jerusalem. Mohammed Staya spoke with Bloomberg's Ethan Branner from his office in the West Bank. Gaza is an integral part of the state of Banistlin right, and the Balestinian territory includes Gaza, West Bank and Jerusalem. So when we talk about two states, the geography of the two states is Gaza, Jerusalem and the West Bank. So this integral part of the Balistina territory should always be there is there a fear of going in after this operation by Israel that you're sort of following in on their tanks. We start a concern. We said that we are not going to go there on and Israelian militia what does it mean. It means that for us there has to be an arrangement. Our people are there and we need to put together structure and we need to put together a mechanism. This is something that we are working on with the international community in order for us to make it possible. There were there will be huge needs in terms of relief, reconstruction, to remedy the wounds, and are you ready to take that on? Not by ourselves, I mean, obviously we need international assistance, but this is your plan, your planners that the PA would when this thing ends, be the kind of vehicle for rebuilding Gaza by all means. Look, when Israel encouraged into Gaza in twenty fourteen, who did all the reconstruction, and we were still reconstructing Gaza. Most of the most of aspects of infrastructure has been actually built by the Palatina Authority, and even before the war, I should tell you that there were there under implementation a total value of eight hundred million dollars of infrastructure projects, that is and that has been under implementation by US roads, hospitals, water networks, electricity, desalination plants and so on. So we, as I told you, we never abandoned Gaza. We never left Gaza. So now any day after it should also include a package of assistance with the full engagement of the international community, because ourselves we cannot do it. A lot. The relationship between the PA and Hammas is very complicated. It's been there was after all, civil war, as you said in two thousand and seven. But the Israeli say they want to eradicate Hamas. Is that a goal that is achievable? Can you do it? First of all, you know, we tried four times or more to come to an agreement with Hamas, but it didn't work and correct and we signed four agreements. Unfortunately none of them was ever implemented by them by them, and recently we have had a dialogue in Egypt and an almen and we agreed on certain issues, we did disagree on a number of issues, and we did form a committee to keep them engaged. That was the idea, but unfortunately all these sort of things has happened, and then now things are going in a totally different direction. Now. For Israel to say that they are going to eradicate or eliminate Hamas, I don't think that's a possible goal to achieve simply because Hamas is not in Gaza only Hamas is in Libanon. Hamas in leadership, everybody knows in Kata, and they're here in the Wost Bank and so on and so forth. So what is needed really is a situation in which that Palestinian unity should be be allowed to function on very clear the bonds and agenda. We did put together certain bonds for Hamas to accept, they never accept it, including the recognition of international legitimacy, United National Resolutions, be a LO commitments and so on and so forth. We even invited Hamas to become part of the Ballistini and Balistan Liberation organ They never wanted to. Hamas wanted to take things their own way, either their way or the highway. And it seems that we are on the highway. So that is where the situation is now. As I said, whether Israel will be able to achieve what they are claiming to do, I doubt that. But on the other hand, in no way to say that you are in favor of what's happening. The suppression of Hamas ultimately needs to happen in some way if they're not going to come into the pl of if they're not going to foreswear their armed struggle and join in some international see what needs to happen with Hamas. What can you see happening? Well, I think Hamas before October seven is one thing, and Hamas after is a very good point. And so and therefore, I think if they are ready to come to ground, to an agreement and really accept the political platform of the blow, accept the tools of struggle, because this is an important point of difference between us and them, and then there will be a room for talk. Otherwise it's just simply things will continue to be the same. And even Palestinians should not be divided. We have been divided. Unfortunately, Hamas took over Gaza by force in two thousand and seven, and this should not have lasted for seventeen years. And that was the Prime Minister of the Palestinian Authority, Mohammed Staya, speaking with Bloomberg's Israel Bureau chief Ethan Bronner from his offices in the West Bank, and Ethan is here with us now from Tel Aviv. Much of that conversation, much of what we heard there from the Palestinian Prime Minister Ethan sounds so aspirational at this point in the war. What's it going to take to get those aspirations to become reality the day after? Well, hello, Nathan, I would say that it's going to take something superhuman. There is an incredible amount of bad things ahead. First, it's hard to imagine. I mean, there are several points here. One is that many people argue that when there is a massive catastrophe, it can become an opportunity. That terrible wars do lead to opportunities of rebuilding, and that is essentially what Prime Minister's style was trying to say. He's also repeating the Palestinie Authority on the Palestine Liberation Organization's main contentions of recent years about what needs to happen and why it hasn't happened, And one can understand that. I think the problem is that the Israelis are in complete disagreement. At least this Israeli government under Prime Minister Nitanya, who considers Staya and President Abbas to be unreliable partners. They do not want to see They do not imagine that Hamas could be reformed and come in. They want it destroyed. And also the idea that Hamas after October seventh and after this war will be more modern and more reformed, you know, in some ways as counterintuitive. In some ways, what happened on October seventh has been a revival for those who in the Palestine community who believe in armed struggle and who believe in confronting is remlitarily. So, you know, it's a lot of pie in the sky for a lot of people. But so is the Israeli perspective, which is that we're going to destroy Amas and start over with the technocratic leadership that's going to remind us of the UAE. So we have two very contradictory sets of goals and plans, and the US kind of lending a little bit of support to each side, and we'll see where this goes. Yeah, it points to the idea of mediation when you have this kind of massive gap, and this idea that the Palestinian Prime Minister said to you in this interview that the US is working with them on trying to bridge this divide. How invested do you see the US right now and the counteries, even with some of the hostage negotiations that have happened in recent weeks, What is the role of mediation with this kind of massive gap between the Palestinians and the Israelis. Well, let's leave the hostage negotiation and the countries on one side, because that's an immediate need with people whose lives are at stake at this moment, and that's been going on quite intensely. We can talk about it if you like later in terms of a mediation for the day after the war and what's going to be the future of some kind of state of Palestine and what's going to happen in the Holy Land. I mean, there's been mediation from day one, and it has not especially succeeded. You know. I think it's true that right this moment that Palestinian authority and the Israeli government are not in a position to sit down across the table and talk to one another. They have nothing but to contempt for one another, and so some outside help is needed. Now. I think the question is, you know, how much investment is an American government interested in putting in. It's not an easy task. It's not the only thing President Biden has on his agenda, and not just not just internationally but domestically. It's got an election coming up in a year, so it's a little hard to mention. What the United States has done has put together half a dozen people between State, NSC and White House who are talking to the Palestinian authority and the Israelis about this stuff. It's kind of an attempt to lay out a plan so that the day after doesn't come and we got nothing to talk about. We haven't planned anything, but it's a little bit of an act of academic theoretical work, because we don't know when this war will end, or how it will end, or what Gaza will look like. The Prime Minister also talked about Hamasa's presence outside Gaza and the West Bank, Lebanon and elsewhere. Is that a hint that this war could expand beyond Gaza? So I don't think that was his aim, but you're right that it could. I mean, we have his Belah bearing down from the north and from Lebanon on Israel, and there's always that enormous concern. The reason that the United States has sent to battle ship carriers with aircraft carriers to the Mediterranean to send a message to his belah. But I think also the point he was trying to make is that you know, even if you kill everybody who works for Hamas in Gaza, you still have leaders in Katar and in Beirut, so you know, and that it's some from within the fabric of Palestinian society, so that this is an unrealistic goal. He says. This is Bloomberg Daybreak Today, your morning brief on the stories making news from Wall Street to Washington and beyond. Look for us on your podcast feed by six am Eastern each morning, on Apple, Spotify, and anywhere else you get your podcasts. You can also listen live each morning starting at five am Wall Street time on Bloomberg eleven three to zero in New York, Bloomberg ninety nine to one in Washington, Bloomberg one oh six to one in Boston, and Bloomberg ninety sixty in San Francisco. Our flagship New York station is also available on your Amazon Alexa devices. Just say Alexa play Bloomberg eleven thirty plus listen coast to coast on the Bloomberg business app, SERRIUSXM, the iHeartRadio app, and on Bloomberg dot Com. I'm Nathan Hager and I'm Amy Morris. Join us again tomorrow morning for all the news you need to start your day right here on Bloomberg DaybreakSee Fired up to close out another week with robust sports chatter and passion as the latest edition has arrived. On deck: (3:09) It was a rather quiet MLB Winter Meetings period down in Nashville this week, until last night when a major deal took place as the Yankees acquired Juan Soto from San Diego for prospects. Does this make the Bronx Bombers World Series contenders? Is there more work to be done if you're GM Brian Cashman? Then there's quite a bit surrounding the biggest free agent in the sport, Shohei Ohtani. Has he hijacked and suffocated free agency from his counterparts? And how his silence is affecting him in negotiating with other teams? I'll have all of the up to the minute deals to this point as I continue to monitor where Ohtani and the like (i.e. Blake Snell, Cody Bellinger, Matt Chapman, etc.) may be headed. (20:45) The NFL has another ordinary week on the schedule, but there is one heavyweight matchup that's ultra important to the NFC playoff picture. Philadelphia is at Dallas on Sunday night. Why this game is imperative for the Eagles, more so than the Cowboys? And what effect this'll have if Philly loses? I'll break down some of the other games that have postseason implications as we inch closer to the final stretch of the regular season. As an addendum, what is Florida Governor, Ron DeSantis doing by wanting to sue the committee for snubbing Florida State out of the college football playoffs? Really?! (32:40) Hoops fans, the NBA Cup semifinals begins tonight, with the championship on Saturday night. Indiana will face Milwaukee in the first game, followed by New Orleans-LA Lakers. It's easy to point out which matchup the NBA does NOT want to see in the Final. Plus, whatever else is going on throughout the Association as we get past this first ever in-season tournament. (40:50) Former Blackhawks great, Patrick Kane has found a new home in Detroit as he attempts to resurrect his career in Motown. What kind of impact with all of his experience, winning and resume will he have on a young team looking to take a leap in the Eastern Conference? Also, what else is happening in the NHL as teams continue to stay hot or get back on track, almost a third into the season. (49:35) The Heisman Trophy for the best college football player takes place on Saturday. I'll tell you who I think should win as Washington QB, Michael Penix Jr., Oregon QB, Bo Nix, Ohio State WR Marvin Harrison Jr. and LSU QB Jayden Daniels are the finalists for this years award. Play Like A Champion Each And Every Day!It's valid anytime, but particularly during the current time, business leaders must keep their eyes on the proverbial prize.Enter Coach Dana Cavalea, now an executive coach for C-Suite executives, who served as Director of Performance/ Head Performance Coach for the New York Yankees, helping lead the team to a World Series Championship in 2009.In the context of playing like a champion every day, imagine the level of performance that the Coach brought to bear, answering to GM Brian Cashman and the Steinbrenner Family. In this episode, the Coach and I spoke about many things including...Is a coach the right thing for every C-Suite executive? Is every executive coachable and/or willing to be coached? In the same vein, were all of the NY Yankees coachable given the range of skill, salaries, and ego?As an executive coach, what does accountability look like?We spoke about different methods of making a decision. One way is by omission and the other by commission. What is it that holds people back from reaching their full potential? We explored whether the Coach has ever had to fire a client, and why he thinks some give maximum effort while others do not.Much more.In a nutshell, what Coach Dana Cavalea brings to the party for executives is the following...After working with so many clients over the years, I realized the ones that were able to obtain and maintain the highest levels of success were the ones who were truly committed to both the short AND long game....The person that was looking for overnight wins, overnight success, and a quick fix never made it big... (in anything they did)....Sometimes they shot to the top of their game like a rocket... but eventually they ended up falling backwards pretty hard...On the other hand, those who were able to grow year over year both personally and professionally, they understood the Power of Coaching and the Power of Process...You see, it is not a question of whether you CAN or CAN'T do something....It is more of a questions of whether you CAN do something consistently with focus, confidence, and without burning yourself out in an attempt to create greatness...What is Coach Dana Cavalea all about...1. Getting You Started Towards Your Passion & Goals2. Motivating YOU daily with the tools to get after it! 3. Coaching You Towards Your Mission, Vision, and Goals..4. What if the Yankees DID sign Bryce Harper?

The New York Yankees could have Bryce Harper, and Harper was on the Pat McAfee show on ESPN talking about how he grew up a Yankee fan and idolized guys like Bernie Williams, Jorge Posada, and Derek Jeter. But the Yankees, according to GM Brian Cashman, already had six outfielders and didn't need Bryce Harper at the start of the 2019 season. So Steve and Stacey played a game of what if. What if the Yankees did get Bryce Harper? Which subsequent moves wouldn't have been made? Which trades wouldn't have happened? How would the Yankees have performed in the playoffs from 2019-2022 if Bryce Harper was a Yankee? Then, they discuss an article written by Joel Sherman, who compares the current-day Houston Astros to the dynasty-era New York Yankees. Is he right? Stacey tries not to get sick when comparing the two teams. And finally, the Astros are taking on the Texas Rangers in the ALCS, and Jordan Montgomery pitched a gem for the Rangers. Montgomery has been pitching well so far in October for the Rangers. Are Yankee fans happy for him? Stacey is. Then Stacey and Steve discuss the NLCS and how they think it will go. Harper video: https://twitter.com/IcyVert/status/17129086920378166862019 report on Yankees-Harper: https://sny.tv/articles/phillies-step-up-late-on-bryce-harper-and-theres-implications-for-yankeesAstros article: https://nypost.com/2023/10/15/astros-are-best-team-since-dynasty-yankees-cheating-be-damned/Join our subtext! https://joinsubtext.com/lockedonyankeesWhat is subtext? https://youtu.be/BItWi-kbIJY?t=1468Subscribe on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCH5857VCyYLAzsWr9vHk4sQFollow Stacey On Twitter: https://twitter.com/StaceGotsSubscribe to Steve's YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@stevegranadoFollow Steve On Twitter: https://twitter.com/SteveGranadoFollow the Show On Twitter: https://twitter.com/LockedOnYankeesSupport Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!birddogsGo to birddogs.com/LOCKEDONMLB or enter promo code LOCKEDONMLB for a free water bottle with any order. Harper video: https://twitter.com/IcyVert/status/1712908692037816686 2019 report on Yankees-Harper: https://sny.tv/articles/phillies-step-up-late-on-bryce-harper-and-theres-implications-for-yankees Astros article: https://nypost.com/2023/10/15/astros-are-best-team-since-dynasty-yankees-cheating-be-damned/ Join our subtext! https://joinsubtext.com/lockedonyankees What is subtext? https://youtu.be/BItWi-kbIJY?t=1468 Subscribe on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCH5857VCyYLAzsWr9vHk4sQ Follow Stacey On Twitter: https://twitter.com/StaceGots Subscribe to Steve's YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@stevegranado Follow Steve On Twitter: https://twitter.com/SteveGranado Follow the Show On Twitter: https://twitter.com/LockedOnYankees Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! birddogs Go to birddogs.com/LOCKEDONMLB or enter promo code LOCKEDONMLB for a free water bottle with any order. The New York Yankees are playing .500 baseball this season, which for most teams would be a mediocre year, but by their standards it's historically bad. The Yankees haven't been under .500 at this point in the season since 1995, and they haven't finished a season under .500 since 1992. Do you place the blame on manager Aaron Boone or GM Brian Cashman? What changed does the team need to make this offseason in order to get back on track. We break down the Yankees' struggles and other news around MLB on today's episode.

The New York Yankees drop another one to the Rays, 5-3 at the Stadium. This time Carlos Rodón struggled and couldn't last more than four innings, and the offense was once again shut down by a team's starter—on Tuesday, it was Zach Eflin's turn. Stacey and Steve discuss the Yankees' confounding trade deadline moves that don't seem to solve anything, and Steve gives you the lowdown on Juan Carela, who was traded to the White Sox in one of those confounding moves for Keynan Middleton. We discussed GM Brian Cashman's statements following the passing of the deadline and give our thoughts about what he said to explain away his decision-making. Then Steve tells you about another prospect in the system, Luis Velasquez, who wasn't traded and did well last week, winning the South Atlantic League Pitcher of the Week award as a reliever. The Yankees made the move they needed to make and secured the services of Aaron Judge for the next nine years. Things were tough for a while as it seemed that the Giants might swoop in and bring the Bay Area native back, and the Padres made things super interesting by offering him $400 million, but ultimately, owner Hal Steinbrenner made a long-distance call from Italy and said all the right things to convince Judge to stay in pinstripes for $360 million. With that, Aaron Judge is a Yankee still and the rest of the offseason becomes a lot easier for GM Brian Cashman and his team. Replacing Judge's production and presence would not have been an easy task and luckily it's not one that anyone has to think about. This was a move that absolutely had to be made, and we're all thankful that it was done. What a wonderful early Christmas present for Yankees fans.  Andrew and Kunj fire up the ol' podcast-mobile to share thoughts and stories of relief and near-heartbreak (thanks, Jon Heyman) on the Yankees bringing back the face of their franchise. They also discuss the return of old friend Tommy Kahnle, and the departures of Jameson Taillon and Miguel Castro. Lastly, the co-hosts end the show with handing out some obvious Yankee- and Manfred-of-the-Week awards but not before discussing some of the rumors swirling around about how the Yankees don't seem ready to call it an offseason just yet. The team has been linked to Carlos Rodón, Andrew Benintendi, Brandon Nimmo, and Bryan Reynolds, while some of it may just be rumors there seems to be real smoke in some places.* *Note: This podcast was recorded before news broke of the Red Sox signing Masataka Yoshida. The dust has fully settled on the 2022 Yankees, so now we must look beyond. Josh Diemert, Peter Brody, and Esteban Rivera gathered for a Twitter Spaces chat on November 2nd to chat about the biggest questions facing the Yankees this coming offseason. As Josh detailed, the main four characters are free agent GM Brian Cashman, embattled manager Aaron Boone, steady first baseman Anthony Rizzo, and of course, the 62-homer superstar Aaron Judge. Owner Hal Steinbrenner obviously has his own role to play as well, it would be lovely to see them find a way to unload Josh Donaldson, and there are more questions beyond them -- especially if Judge walks -- but these are the main stories. Well, the Yankees' 2022 season is officially over. For the fourth time in the last eight seasons, the Yankees' dreams end at the hands of the Houston Astros. Andrew and Kunj's most recent episode of the podcast prior to now came with the Yankees already facing an 0-2 deficit in the ALCS and heading home to The Bronx to hopefully turn their fortunes. They headed to The Bronx alright, but just like the first two games, the offense failed to show up in Game 3. Harrison Bader and Anthony Rizzo showed some life, but ultimately the team didn't do enough to survive past Game 4. The season is over. Andrew and Kunj are back on the pod to officially eulogize the 2022 Bombers and discuss, vent, and grumble about what exactly went wrong for the Yankees (a lot) and what little went right. After the ad break (~21:52), they also looked ahead to discuss the uncertain-but-maybe-not-so-uncertain futures of GM Brian Cashman and manager Aaron Boone, and of course, the biggest elephant in the room: Aaron Judge's impending free agency. They also took the opportunity to rip into Josh Donaldson, Bringer of Bad Vibes, and generally bantered about the many questions facing the Yankees in the months ahead before wrapping up the pod by making predictions for the World Series (spoiler: they're both rooting for the Phillies' good vibes and hoping for the worst for the Astros), and picking their final Yankees and Manfreds of the 2022 Yankees season. On deck: (3:51) The stage is set as we have our World Series matchup beginning on Friday. The Phillies swept their three home games as they dispose of the Padres in five. I compare this to a recent Wild Card playoff team and how they've been hot ever since the tournament started. The NLCS MVP Bryce Harper finally makes it to his first Fall Classic as I'll chronicle his career to this point. As for the Padres, it was a good year and one to build on, but there are a couple of question marks that need to be answered as they have to deal with their suspended star shortstop (Fernando Tatis Jr.) and the specter of Juan Soto's expensive contract demands looming. (17:28) The Astros continue their postseason dominance, starting off 7-0 as they sweep the Yankees in the ALCS. They've won it close. They've won high scoring games. Coming from behind. They look like a team that's primed and ready for a championship. Then, there are the Yankees. Tons of uncertainty as the GM Brian Cashman's contract is up. Who could possibly be in line to take over? I have a fascinating suggestion. Also, a breakdown of the organization from the manager, some players that need to go, (including one of their younger, core players) and what happens to Aaron Judge, now that he'll become a free agent? (40:35) A rather lackluster NFL Week 7 took place, but there is a huge question regarding two of the sports biggest teams (i.e. Packers & Buccaneers) as to who is in worse shape moving forward? That duo highlights my losers of the week and I'll share a surprising winner of Sunday as I take a look the games unfolded as we creep up on the halfway point of the season. I'll also share my thoughts on the Christian McCaffrey trade to San Francisco. Will his addition automatically make them a Super Bowl contender? (1:01:34) Clemson survived a scare at home vs. Syracuse as they had to overcome multiple turnovers and their backup QB Cade Klubnik had to save the day as the pull out a 27-21 win. You had two more at the bottom of the top 10 drop out after losses (i.e. Ole Miss & UCLA) as we move deeper into this college football season. (1:05:09) The Lakers and Sixers have gotten off to sluggish starts as they're both 0-3. Is Doc Rivers in any trouble in Philadelphia? How about the Blazers and Jazz? Both are off to 3-0 starts, making me look like a fool early on as I chose them as unders this year. Plus, the Pelicans suffered their first loss last night, but in the process lost Brandon Ingram and Zion Williamson to injury. Is this a cause for concern just a few games into the season? (1:08:32) There are a couple of big injuries to some high profile players in the NHL. Avalanche forward, Gabriel Landeskog will be out three months due to arthroscopic knee surgery. And Panthers defenseman, Aaron Ekblad is on long term IR with a groin injury. How much will they be missed from their respective teams? Robert Deininger and Jack Degraw discussed the Yankees Starting Pitching, which is the best in the MLB at 2.88. We've seen Gerrit Cole return to form as the Yankees "Ace," along with Nestor Cortez making the case that he's the Yankees #2 "Ace" with and ERA of 1.50. We talk about both of them, along with Jordan Montgomery, the resurgence of Luis Severino, and Jameson Taillon. We also touch on the Yankees decision to demote Miguel Andujar to Triple-A (yet again) despite Andujar having more productive AB's than Joey Gallo (.173 avg.) and Aaron Hicks (.223 avg.). Following Andujar's demotion, he informed Manager Aaron Boone that he no longer wishes to play for the Yankees, and demanded to be traded. This is the second season in-a-row that Miguel Andujar has requested a trade. We also discuss the MVP caliber season that Aaron Judge is currently having, and on pace to have. Judge is leading the Yankees in batting average (.316), HR's (21), RBI's (42,) OBP (.386), SLG (.689), and OPS (1.075). Not only is Aaron Judge the face of the Yankees, the "unofficial Captain" by the vast majority of the fans, but he is by far their best player! And if he goes on to have a career year, it'll be extremely difficult for GM Brian Cashman and the Yankees organization to justify not resigning him!!!*which has the best ERA in MLB at 2.88A Comfortably Zoned Radio Network, production. After a busy, busy trade deadline, Andrew and Kunj reconvene to discuss all of the Yankees' moves, led of course by the tragic DFA-ing of Sal Romano, "The Big Cheese." We miss you already, buddy. In reality, the Joey Gallo and Anthony Rizzo trades were of course the focus, and the deals featuring Andrew Heaney, Luis Cessa, Justin Wilson, and Clay Holmes were all discussed. GM Brian Cashman did a pretty good job of keeping the team competitive for the stretch of 2021 while also helping the 2022 club and keeping the most important prospects to the Yankees' future in tow. It's a fine line, and the club got off to a good start post-deadline with a sweep of the Marlins. But because this is still the 2021 Yankees, there had to be some bad news, and Gerrit Cole's COVID diagnosis was the original focus. Then, the Jordan Montgomery COVID news broke mid-recording and the co-hosts got a little delirious. Gio Urshela and Domingo Germán also landed on the injured list, though on the bright side, Luis Severino and Corey Kluber seem to be making their way back. In the latter half of the show, Andrew and Kunj "Meet a Baby Bomber" with Everson Pereira and Josh Breaux (hey, a rhyme!), who both happened to earn minor league promotions during the recording. Then, they close out with the Yankee and Mitre of the Week, and salute AL Pitcher of the Month Jameson Taillon. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

My guest today is Dana Cavalea, who spent 12 years with the New York Yankees, many of which were as the Director of Strength and Conditioning & Performance Enhancement. He won the 2009 World Series and was named the top strength coach voted by his peers during the same season. He is also the author of Habits of A Champion. During the episode, we discuss what it was like to be called by Yankees GM Brian Cashman at the age of 23 to be promoted to the Head Strength Coach, why certain players have the right mental make-up and routine to succeed over time, how he helped young players work through failure, and what Mariano Rivera said the secret was to his success. He also touches on how GM Brian Cashman handled the team meeting during the 2009 season after they lost 10 straight games, which turned the season around, and what other lessons he learned from guys like Derek Jeter, Alex Rodriguez, and Andy Pettite. Show Notes (1:40) —Episode begins with how he was hired to be the head strength coach for the New York Yankees when he was 23 years old (3:00) — How he built trust with the players at such a young age (4:30) — How players handle failure in baseball  (6:15) — Lessons from Joe Torre (7:45) — How he helped young players handling failure for the first time in their lives (9:55) — Lessons learned from Andy Pettite  (11:00) — Why some players were driven because of their rough upbringing (13:05) — Why Derek Jeter didn’t think everyone deserved equal treatment (15:50) — Mariano Rivera’s routine (22:10) — How Yankees GM Brian Cashman handled a meeting during 2009 when the team was in the middle of a 10-game losing streak (24:45) — End of episode questions End of Episode Questions: 1. What’s 1 book every coach should read? How to Win Friends and Influence People by Dale Carnegie 2. Who is one person you’d want to hear as a guest on this podcast? John Calipari 3. What’s one area you’re looking to improve in over the next year? Take his health and fitness to another level 4. What’s popular advice you hear people say that you think is wrong? You can’t be great at everything; you have to figure out what you’re great at and excel in that area. 5. What advice do you have for young coaches who are listening to this? Just because you’re young doesn’t mean you don’t know anything, but just because you’re young and you think you know everything doesn’t mean you do. 6. What’s the darkest moment you experienced professionally and how did you overcome it? He and Joe Girardi had philosophical differences on training and his contract wasn’t renewed after his final season as a result but he knew there would be something else for him afterwards.  Favorite Quotes: “What makes him (Mariano Rivera) tick is he isn’t worrying about public applause and he’s not worried about public opinion. He just focuses on what it is that he was hired to do. And that was to pitch and get hitters out.” “When you work under a guy like Joe Torre, it’s like having a grandfather /mob-boss as your manager.”  “You can have a difficult conversation with a player, but you always have to make that player leave feeling good about themselves, and that’s what Joe (Torre) did a great job of.”  “If you show up with the intent of being successful and being competitive, you have a great chance of being successful because you’re competitive.”
