Shrek launched a Dreamworks franchise, won an Oscar, spawned a stage musical, and greatly extended the cultural life of the band Smash Mouth. And it all started with the story of a crabby green ogre, voiced by Mike Myers, who just wants a bunch of fairy-tale characters to stay out of his swamp. The film turns 25 this month, so we are revisiting our conversation about its legacy. A public service announcement from your friends at Cinebuds: “Animated movies” and “Anime” are NOT the same thing. It's a good time to point this out because throughout this month, Milwaukee Film will turn its lens on the magic of both categories as part of its “Ani-May” movie series.Yes, the more general moviegoing public will notice familiar titles like The Iron Giant, Ferngully and Smashmouth-adjacent delight-turned-sequel-factory Shrek (and Shrek 2). That does NOT mean families with young children should descend on the Oriental Theatre willy-nilly for any selection in the series.A prime case in point is the film that earns our focus in this episode, the punctuation-laden Chainsaw Man: The Movie – Reze Arc. Leave the kiddies at home for this high-octane, high-violence tale that might just lure you in via a slow-burn 40 minutes that seem to be more about teenage dating than the title would suggest. Then … it earns that title. But while Dori and Kpolly spend time exploring the mythology of devils and hunters, compare Chainsaw Man to Blade and wonder whether they're getting too old for this s***, there's more than chainsaws in this episode! Our duo also touch on the full lineup for “Ani-May” — from Shrek's swampy nostalgia to the Fantasia-indebted Allegro Non Troppo.#####Cinebuds is sponsored by Joe Wilde Garage Doors.
Want to request a song? Tell us your rating? Send us a Text Message right now! This week on 1001 Songs That Make You Want To Die, the boys take on “Walkin' on the Sun” by Smash Mouth — a track that sounds like a breezy summer anthem until you actually listen to what it's saying. From the jump, things spiral. What starts as a laid-back, organ-driven groove quickly turns into a lyrical mess of hippie ideals, social commentary, threats, dead babies, and anti-crack messaging. Somewhere in there, Smash Mouth might be making a point… but no one's entirely sure what it is.We break down the lyrics, unpack the real-world context behind the song, and try to figure out whether this is secretly deep or just completely unhinged. There's also a chaotic round of Could You Beat Them in a Fight?, where the odds of taking on Smash Mouth's frontman get seriously debated.Plus: questionable interpretations, cult vibes, and one of the strangest tonal shifts we've ever seen in a song.Is this misunderstood social commentary or absolute nonsense wrapped in a catchy hook?Tune in and find out. On today's edition of the cast, we take a gander at the Billboard Modern Rock Charts and recap artists who reached the top of the chart on their very first chart entry. It's a feat that was actually more difficult to accomplish than it looks way back in the day, with some artists unable to reach the summit in their first chart appearance. We take a look at all the artists that reached the summit for the first time, including the founding fathers Nirvana, Green Day, and The Offspring to name a few. Plus some other lesser, one hit wonders including Smash Mouth, Chumbawamba, Marcy Playground, and Fastball. We also talk about how it's been more of a common occurrence more recently with sombr, The Paradox, and Edgehill reaching the top with their song 'Doubletake" which I play for you at the end of the cast.

Questions about grandmothers and Grammy winners! Fact of the Day: The filmmakers for "Shrek" (2001) had originally used Smash Mouth's "All Star" as a placeholder for the opening credits and intended to replace it with an original composition that would mimic the feel of "All Star". Guests: Greg Loiacano – vocals, guitar Michael Urbano – drums Vicki Randle – percussionIn this episode of Only in the Green Room, we sit down with Greg Loiacono & Stingray, a Bay Area super-group built on deep respect, serious groove, and a whole lot of joy. Add longtime collaborator and powerhouse percussionist Vicki Randle, and Stingray was born. The trio talks about the unspoken language that defines their music: listening more than talking, playing for the song, and letting structure and feel guide everything. Part 1 of my conversation with guest Phil Stacey about songs we hate to love. Show notes: Surprised at how good the Who were in concert despite their advanced age Songs we hate to love, not necessarily guilty pleasures Things we were embarrassed to say we liked when we were in school Most of our picks were from when we were kids Jay: I liked hard rock and metal and would never admit I liked poppier stuff like Duran Duran Jay: In doing research, I discovered there was a "rock" version of the Lord's Prayer that was a minor hit in 1973 Phil: ABBA wrote some pop classics When REO Speedwagon had that one huge album AOR was huge in the early '80s Jay: I loved KISS's disco song, but never got into the band Phil: Listened to a lot of Manilow as a kid Nancy Sinatra's "These Boots Are Made for Walkin'" captured that swinging '60s vibe The pop goodness of the Association Phil: The band Boston has been played to death in these parts, but they had their moment Controversial choice: Phil likes the worst Genesis song Dumb song, dumb video When Eddie Murphy became a pop star Phil also likes Crazytown's hit Released at the height of nu metal/rap rock Jay: Begrudgingly liked Animotion's big hit First album Jay had as a kid was by Glen Campbell Campbell wasn't a typical country singer Jay: Got into some of Paul Simon's mid-70s solo work Getting into early Loverboy deep cuts Billy Joel wrote a lot of bad songs, but a few good ones Jay: Always a big fan of "Rump Shaker" ABC was good at the foppish synth pop Jay: I hate everything about Smash Mouth except their first single Totally dig one George Michael song above all others Late '70s pop blast from M Foreigner struck gold with catchy rock jams To be continued Completely Conspicuous is available through Apple Podcasts. Equipment Manager Yael Wylie returned to the Bench to host this game. It was determined early that Limp Bizkit is the Nickelback of rap rock, Josh proclaimed "I'm dumb!" when he forgot there was a theme to Sporting Haikus (but are we 100% sure Mikko Rantanen isn't of Asian decent?), Ede is pretty sure that Takeo Spikes is French, Scott's favorite Eagle-Eye Cherry song is "Save Tinnitus," and much to the delight of Josh, everybody reminisces about great(?) 90s alt-rock. #311 #smashmouth #shipoftheseus #limpbizkit #nickleback #mikkorantanen #takeospikes #eagleeyecherry #90s https://dobosdelights.com/ Promo Code: CheckYourTaint https://www.patreon.com/benchwarmerstp https://www.facebook.com/benchwarmerstp https://www.twitter.com/benchwarmerstp https://www.instagram.com/benchwarmerstp/ https://www.teepublic.com/stores/benchwarmers-trivia-podcast
00:00 Introductions01:45 Hulk Hogan10:30 Military Parade17:34 Poland Pulls Out23:03 RFK 38:49 Haley Joel Osment—What's better, driving during the day, or overnight?—Hulk Hogan is going to save America. He's already put out a (probably) watered down version of “beer” (Germany would probably have something to say about it), and now that parent company wants to buy Hooters.Hooters!Misleading advertising and bad food almost killed you, but a wrestler with CTE (alleged) is trying to save you. God bless.(Also: why is Amy Winehouse lauded, while Smash Mouth is a punchline? A discussion is had.)—Corporal Bone Spurs threw himself a military parade, and the dumbest of the dumb lapped it up. “Why wouldn't a man who insulted Gold Star families and called members of the military suckers deserve a military parade?” Whatever. —Modern Warfare isn't just a video game, it's a reality.Ukraine showed the world what can be done with inexpensive drones, and with that, Poland said, “Expensive U.S. military helicopters? Pass.”What will the Military Industrial Complex do now?—RFK is trying to make America healthy again, and he's doing so by killing people. Measles is back, maybe Smallpox and Polio won't be far behind.—OK, Haley Joel… ya got blackout drunk, and you called a police officer both an anti-semitic slur, AND a naughty German soldier circa 1930 - 1944. Which is it??You can't mix those two; they're polar opposites. Also: what's better, Celsius, or Monster? Idiots on Parade: we mock the news, so you don't have to.Tune in and get your giggle on.Find Jake at @jakeveveraFind nathan at nathantimmel.com

Send us a textOn this episode of the Midwest Mixtape Podcast, Rogers Stevens of Blind Melon joins us for an in-depth conversation about the band's past, present, and future. Rogers reflects on Blind Melon's upcoming performance at the Pig and Whiskey Festival in St. Louis on Friday, May 9, where they'll be sharing the stage with Smash Mouth, and also looks ahead to a major milestone: the band's first-ever show at Red Rocks while supporting O.A.R. Rogers shares stories from Blind Melon's early days, including their struggles to break through, the cultural phenomenon of “No Rain,” and the bittersweet reality of being labeled a "one-hit wonder." He opens up about pivotal moments in the band's journey, from navigating the music industry's highs and lows to overcoming the tragedy of losing their iconic frontman, Shannon Hoon—a gifted songwriter whose legacy still shapes the band's music and message today. We also dive into Blind Melon's evolution, their move to New Orleans, and how the city's jazz scene—including artists like Kermit Ruffins and Rebirth Brass Band—inspired tracks like “Lemonade.” Rogers gives insight into the meaning behind songs like “Skinned,” and how the band blends upbeat melodies with deeper, sometimes darker, lyrical themes. This is a must-watch for fans of Blind Melon, 90s alt-rock, and those curious about the resilience and reinvention of one of rock's most unique and heartfelt bands.

Adam opens the show with Mike Dawson sitting in for the news. They discuss how modern technology has somehow not put an end to “lore.” Then they cover stories that include a favorable ruling for Alec Baldwin in his fatal shooting lawsuit, Rob Reiner tweeting for Joe Biden to step down and new garbage cans for New York City. Next, Adam is joined by members of the band Smash Mouth, Paul De Lisle & Zach Goode. They talk about KROQ being pivotal in helping the band break, the death of their former lead-singer, Steve Harwell, and their current tour & new singles. Then, Dave Rubin returns to the show and they recap a star-studded dinner they attended last night, which included Adam splitting a potato with billionaire David Sacks. They also discuss Gavin Newsom's ruining of California, Joe Biden's obvious decline and the media's tendency to lie about things Trump said, despite video evidence to the contrary.
