Ephesians 5 starts off with more warnings for the believer. We focus in on the warning against "coarse jesting." In every language there are words deemed "off-color" or "dirty" or "swear words." The words themselves make the list through some societal agreement, often not through any clear standard. There are two slang words, for example, for human excrement. One is acceptable and the other ist verboten. Can context play a role here? Should we be more lenient with those who come out of background where regular use of "unacceptable" words are acceptable? We've already noted context, and I believe context and intent are at the heart of this and many other matters of the faith.

Welcome back to Razzlefrat! This week, we're the dog in the meme saying “this is fine” as the world literally burns and covers NYC in toxic orange smoke. In this third and final episode, Arnie and Fred continue their discussion of what the Bible says about how Christians should speak. We find Paul including speech that Christians should not be involved in with fornication and filthiness in at least one passage. We discuss that passage at length. James had a good bit to say about the tongue and the problem we have controlling it. He uses examples of how several physical things are controlled and applies them to the tongue. We look at what James has to say. Peter makes similar observations of how our speech can affect us in both good and bad ways. We consider what Peter has to say. Jesus discusses the source of our speech as well as our actions. We complete this episode by noting what He has to say. Take about 30-minutes to listen in on our discussion. Have your Bible handy so you can verify what we are saying. There is a transcript provided of this Buzzsprout episode for your convenience.

0:00 - Intro 0:40 {Are Soul Ties Biblical?} What are “soul ties,” and are they biblical? 18:00 {Has Jesus Always Been God?} Our pastor said on Sunday that Jesus wasn’t God here on Earth until the baptism of John and descending of the Holy Spirit. It sounded really bad to my ears. Can you comment, please? 22:46 {Honoring God Regardless of Feelings} When I feel "good" I find myself doubting less, being more loving, and sinning less. How do I know if I'm growing in the spirit or if it's just my antidepressants making me nicer? 26:44 {Witnessing to Muslims} How do you convince a Muslim that Jesus is more than just a prophet? 30:31 {Did Jesus Overturn the Tables Twice?} Why is Jesus overturning the money tables in John 2 and not later when He enters Jerusalem (around John 11 or 12)? Did He do this 2 times and not just in His last week (Matthew 21:12; Mark 11:15)? 35:06 {Did God Foretell Something that Didn’t Happen?} In 1 Samuel 23:11-13 (ESV), the Lord says David will be handed over to Saul at Keilah, then David leaves town before Saul gets there, so he was not. Why did the Lord foretell a future event that didn't happen? 40:28 {About the Cruciform Hermeneutic} What are your thoughts on the cruciform hermeneutic or cruciform theology? 45:20 {Advice for a Tough Marital Situation} If my wife committed adultery against me and a child resulted from the affair, am I bound to care for the child? Why or why not, and how would I go about handling the situation after finding out? 46:48 {Should Couples Promise “Till Death Do Us Part”?} In many modern weddings, people promise before God "till death do us part,” or something similar. Doesn't that biblically preclude the option of even a biblical divorce? 50:16 {Why was the Cross Necessary if God is All-Powerful?} I have an agnostic friend who can’t accept that the cross was necessary. They believe God was not all powerful if He could not find another way of saving humanity without sacrificing Jesus. Thoughts? 52:59 {About Jacob’s Wrestle with God} How do you interpret Genesis 32, when Jacob wrestles with God? 58:50 {Having Insurance = Lack of Trust in God?} What are your thoughts on having insurance and medical aid? I've heard it said that these things are rooted in fear and keep us from truly trusting God. Is that a biblical/wise perspective to have? 1:01:25 {What Kind of Jokes Fall Under “Jesting”?} I'm confused about “eutrapelia” and I don’t know if it is just crude joking or all jokes that word speaks of in Ephesians 5:4. I use the KJV and it just says "jesting." 1:06:47 {Can We Rebuke the Enemy Ourselves?} Can we rebuke the enemy? 1:08:38 {Are Flashy Lights Inappropriate for a Church?} My church recently renovated our hall to be more upbeat and have flashy lights. I'm extremely disheartened by this. Do you have any advice? 1:13:25 {Slavery in the Old Covenant} How do we reconcile the treatment of foreigner slaves (not Israelite servitude) under the old covenant (bought as property, handed down to children, etc. – Leviticus 25:44-46)? 1:19:36 {Should we Only Have One Teacher?} Please, can you talk about what we should do when a spiritual leader wants you to only take advice from them and no one else, especially when the Bible says to have a “multitude of counselors”? 1:20:55 {Why did Some Men in the Bible Have Multiple Wives?} Most of the men in Bible had multiple wives. Can’t you then say they lived in sin their entire lives? Many people say that continual sin doesn’t equate to being a true Christian. 1:24:32 {Respectfully & Effectively Witnessing to a Boss} My boss is a leader in the LDS church. He is a good and friendly boss but calls himself a Christian.

Fringford Brookby Violet Jacob (1863-1946)The willows stand by Fringford brook,        From Fringford up to Hethe,    Sun on their cloudy silver heads,        And shadow underneath.    They ripple to the silent airs        That stir the lazy day,    Now whitened by their passing hands,        Now turned again to grey.    The slim marsh-thistle's purple plume        Droops tasselled on the stem,    The golden hawkweeds pierce like flame        The grass that harbours them;    Long drowning tresses of the weeds        Trail where the stream is slow,    The vapoured mauves of water-mint        Melt in the pools below;    Serenely soft September sheds        On earth her slumberous look,    The heartbreak of an anguished world        Throbs not by Fringford brook.    All peace is here. Beyond our range,        Yet 'neath the selfsame sky,    The boys that knew these fields of home        By Flemish willows lie.    They waded in the sun-shot flow,        They loitered in the shade,    Who trod the heavy road of death,        Jesting and unafraid.    Peace! What of peace? This glimpse of peace        Lies at the heart of pain,    For respite, ere the spirit's load        We stoop to lift again.    O load of grief, of faith, of wrath,        Of patient, quenchless will,    Till God shall ease us of your weight        We'll bear you higher still!    O ghosts that walk by Fringford brook,        'Tis more than peace you give,    For you, who knew so well to die,        Shall teach us how to live. When three days had passed, the countryman thought, "To-night my money will be in my pocket," and was quite delighted. But no one would come and pay it. "There is no trusting any one now," said he; and at last he lost patience, and went into the town to the butcher and demanded his money. The butcher thought it was a joke, but the peasant said, "Jesting apart, I will have my money! Did not the great dog bring you the whole of the slaughtered cow three days ago?" Then the butcher grew angry, snatched a broomstick and drove him out. "Wait a while," said the peasant, "there is still some justice in the world!" and went to the royal palace and begged for an audience. He was led before the King, who sat there with his daughter, and asked him what injury he had suffered. "Alas!" said he, "the frogs and the dogs have taken from me what is mine, and the butcher has paid me for it with the stick," and he related at full length all that had happened. Thereupon the King's daughter began to laugh heartily, and the King said to him, "I cannot give you justice in this, but you shall have my daughter to wife for it, -- in her whole life she has never yet laughed as she has just done at thee, and I have promised her to him who could make her laugh. Thou mayst thank God for thy good fortune!""Oh," answered the peasant, "I will not have her, I have a wife already, and she is one too many for me; when I go home, it is just as bad as if I had a wife standing in every corner." Then the King grew angry, and said, "Thou art a boor." - "Ah, Lord King," replied the peasant, "what can you expect from an ox, but beef?" - "Stop," answered the King, "thou shalt have another reward. Be off now, but come back in three days, and then thou shalt have five hundred counted out in full."

Bart Busschots taught us the basics of Jest last time for our Test Driven Development environment. This week we learn to group our tests using the `describe()` function in Jest. Grouping tests with describe does more than eliminate the need to comment our code, it also provides more useful output from our tests and scopes what happens inside. As Bart describes it, we climb "Mount Jest" at one point as he explains how we can also loop our tests (instead of repeating code as we did last time) using `describe.each()()`. It's a little head bending with arrays of arrays and functions of functions but it sounds worse to describe than it actually is to read and create. He then describes ways to run certain setup and tear down functions before and after our tests are run and why we might need to do that. Finally, we get the last cool thing we'll need to understand about Jest, and that's how to use the `.only` and `.skip` modifiers on our tests so that we can focus on individual tests while we're chasing bugs. For the first time in a long time, he even gives us an optional challenge to flex these new Jest muscles. You can find Bart's fabulous tutorial shownotes at pbs.bartificer.net.

In this third and final episode, Arnie and Fred continue to discuss heaven and in particular, who will and will not be there. We start out by looking at who will not be there according to the inspired writers. We discuss two sets of scriptures that Paul wrote where he notes a number of activities people are engaged in that will prevent them from going to heaven. It is most important that one repents if one is engaged in any of these activities. We encourage you to do so. We also see that John writes of something the Lord said about those who will and will not be in heaven and the reason for that. We continue the discussion by looking at passages that specifically say who will be in heaven. Some of these passages relate what the Lord stated, and some relate what John saw and wrote about. There are passages that tell us how we can be among the number who will be in heaven, and we look at some of them. We complete our discussion by noting what John said about Christians who sin and what to do about that so their heavenly journey will not be prevented. Take about 30 minutes to listen to our discussion. Have your Bible handy so you can verify that we are teaching what the Bible says. Neither filthiness, nor foolish talking, nor jesting, which are not convenient: but rather giving of thanks. Ephesians 5:4. A man's character may be quite accurately estimated by the nature of his conversation.... Those who jest and joke and indulge in cheap conversation place themselves upon a level where Satan can gain access to them.... When you associate together, you may be a help and a blessing one to another if you surround yourselves with an influence that is divine. But there are those who have grave defects, which are gaining a deeper hold upon them and which if not overcome will drive the Spirit of God out of the heart.... Jesting and joking may please a class of cheap minds, and yet the influence of this kind of conduct is destructive to spirituality. I speak to you as a class and also as individuals: Guard your words. Let sobriety and sound common sense characterize your conversation. Do not trifle with the purity and nobility of your souls by condescending to indulgence in stale jokes, and in cultivating habits of trifling conversation. The requirement of God is explicit on these points, and presents before you the obligations that rest upon you as children of God. The Word of God says, "Whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him." Colossians 3:17.22Letter 2, 1895. O that every one of our youth would realize the evil of foolish conversation, and correct the habit of speaking idle words! Let every one who has indulged in this sin repent of it, confess it before God, and put it far from him. In speaking foolish words, you have dishonored the name of Christ; for you have misrepresented Him in character. No word of guile was found in His lips, no word of prevarication or falsehood. The people that are described as making up the one hundred and forty-four thousand, have the Father's name written in their foreheads, and of them it is said: "In their mouth was found no guile: for they are without fault before the throne of God." Revelation 14:5.23The Youth's Instructor, June 27, 1895. OHC 292.1 - OHC 292.4 --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/tawasv/message

Beyond our range,Yet 'neath the selfsame sky,The boys that knew these fields of homeBy Flemish willows lie. They waded in the sun-shot flow,They loitered in the shade,Who trod the heavy road of death,Jesting and unafraid.Peace! What of peace? This glimpse of peaceLies at the heart of pain,For respite, ere the spirit's loadWe stoop to lift again.O load of grief, of faith, of wrath,Of patient, quenchless will,Till God shall ease us of your weightWe'll bear you higher still!O ghosts that walk by Fringford brook,'Tis more than peace you give,For you, who knew so well to die,Shall teach us how to live.Find us online at thatsnotcanon.com/epigraphySubscribe to us on ITUNES, STITCHER, SPOTIFY, RADIOPUBLIC or your podcatcher of choice.Find us on FACEBOOK, TWITTER or INSTAGRAM. How the candle lights are not tricked and how they can be seen coming from the mouth of a corpse. Sikes tells us the story of Morris Griffith and the 'Light before the Burying' as well as how Corpse Candle lights can be seen on the surface of water and streams. Hector Hugh Munro wrote under the pen name of Saki. He was born in 1870 in British Burma and brought up in Devonshire from the age of 2, by two maiden aunts. They apparently hated each other and would compete to be each more strict and fierce with the child than the other. This may account for some of the cruelty of some of his stories. In 1914 he enlisted as a private, he never really came to terms with authority, but nonetheless he was promoted to Sargent and was killed by a snipers bullet in 1916. His last words, recorded by a fellow solider, were; "put that bloody cigarette out" followed by the sound of a shot. His dark comic stories are his lasting legacy. With our Eucharist, an epistle that many might find as some sort of comfort, and more might need to see as a warning. I do know that it does not take long for me to see where I might be causing myself some problems. You probably have no problem with the "biggies", but what about some of the others mentioned here, some of which some folks seem to think as being part social life or "humor"? One of the reasons for Lent, to adjust our vision of ourselves.
