POPULARITY
If you want a vivid reminder of just how hospitable the Magic Skagit can be, show up at the Lincoln Theater in downtown Mount Vernon at 7pm on Thursday, May 8, 2025 for a public gathering of your friends and neighbors through a program known as "Let's Go Together." The free event offers music and fellowship with the simple agenda of connecting people through the power of face-to-face relationships.Let's Go Together invites people of all cultures, faith traditions, ethnic identities and socioeconomic situations to work together for the common good, and it is one programmatic element of an organization called Paths to Understanding (PTU), which provides a vision, preparation, and practical support for wisdom communities to build meaningful relationships with their neighbors. In this Tales of the Magic Skagit episode, we talk with Viveka Hall-Holt, PTU's events coordinator, about the history of her organization and the journey that led her to its mission of "bridging bias and building unity through multi-faith peacemaking." If the 24/7/365 news cycle leaves you feeling anxious about the state of the world, Paths to Understanding offers a way of engaging locally in building community. As Viveka relates, "When we are in deep community, that makes us feel most alive -- and that is the truest way of being."

M8 Sometimes I Feel Like a Motherless Child (Fats Waller) Rec. 9/23/1943, FATS WALLER PLAYS, SINGS AND TALKS, Jazz Treasury JT-1001, 1956 ABOUT THE ARTIST Today's show features the LATE GREAT Thomas Wright Waller, a jazz pianist and organist, composer and singer, born in New York City in 1904 The 7th of 11 children, his mother was a musician, and his father was a trucker and pastor in NYC. Fats started playing piano when he was 6. He played the organ at his father's church at age 10. PAUSE He was home-schooled early-on by his mother and worked in a grocery store. He quit high school after just one semester at age 15 to work as an organist at the Lincoln Theater in Harlem. PAUSE At the Lincoln Theater, he earned $32 a week. That was 1929. He became known as “Fats Waller” because he was big -- both in body and in mind. PAUSE Fats Waller laid some of the building blocks for what is NOW ‘modern jazz piano'. He popularized the use of The stride piano style, which is widely used by jazz pianists today. He toured internationally and two of his biggest hits were Ain't Misbehavin' and Honeysuckle Rose. PAUSE You are listening to Sometimes I Feel Like a Motherless Child by Fats Waller) Recorded back in 1943.PAUSE Waller copyrighted over 400 songs. He probably composed many more, but, when he was in financial difficulty, he would sell songs to other writers and performers, who would not acknowledge the real composer, claiming the songs as their own. Today's podcast features Fats Waller and a few of his SOLO piano and organ compositions that were recorded between the years 1926 and 1943, or from the age of 22 to 39. Some of these songs are not available today, except where they are rediscovered - - - on my old and treasured Fats Waller record collection! SHOW PLUG - SHOW PLUG - DON'T TOUCH THAT DIAL ! ! BIT BUCKET Waller is also credited with his composition and performance work in Broadway Musicals. Waller is perhaps the FIRST BLACK composer to write the score and perform for a mostly all-white show on Broadway. That was the 1943 Broadway musical EARLY TO BED, produced by Richard Kollmar – the Broadway Flyer for EARLY TO BED reads “Music by Thomas (“Fats”) Waller”. . M1 M1 Squeeze Me (Thomas Waller) Rec. 2/14/1926, FATS WALLER EARLY UNDISCOVERED SOLOS, Riverside Records RLP 12-103, 1955 (2:55) Our first recording is titled “SQUEEZE ME” It's a piano solo, and the composer and performer is Thomas Waller. He is not billed as “Fats” Waller yet, as he is not that unusually large at the young age of 22. This song SQUEEZE ME was recorded for production of piano rolls in 1926, making this among Waller's EARLIEST recordings. Waller recorded his piano solos for the production of Piano Rolls between 1926 and 1927.These rolls operate on player pianos. Insert the roll, and the piano plays the song. PAUSE The player piano is a specialty item, affordable by the wealthy, and not a great way to release new music to the masses. Decades later, in 1955,

In the 8 AM Hour: Larry O'Connor and Julie Gunlock discussed: Maryland Primary Results Recap Governor Larry Hogan @GovLarryHogan: I want to congratulate County Executive Alsobrooks on her nomination. I know Angela well, and I value our respectful relationship. I look forward to a real debate on what this campaign is about: who can actually help fix the mess in Washington. Voters have a clear and stark choice: more of the dysfunctional partisan status quo or real independent and bipartisan leadership. We need leaders who will stand up to the political bosses and bring both parties together to actually get things done, like keeping our communities safe, improving education, and addressing the out-of-control cost of living. I have a proven track record of that exact kind of strong independent leadership. Angela Alsobrooks has officially won the 2024 Maryland Senate Democrat Primary. She defeated David Trone. David Trone spent $60M on a Democrat primary he isn't going to come close to winning and Maryland has 6.1M residents, which means he could have given every person in MD $9.83 with the money that he wasted." In House races, Democrat April McClean Delaney will face Republican Neal Parrott in the Western Maryland 6th District seat in November... In the 3rd District - Democrat Sarah Elfreth beat former U.S. Capitol police officer Harry Dunn for the chance to succeed John Sarbanes... Democrat Johny Olzsewski wins the democratic nomination in the second district to succeed retiring Dutch Ruppersberger... He'll face republican Kim Klacik in November. Democrat David Trone: I can relate to black people because I grew up without plumbing in a family of alcoholics. BIDEN: Donald Trump lost two debates to me in 2020. Since then, he hasn't shown up for a debate. Now he's acting like he wants to debate me again. DeWalt, usually referred to as O.P. was born near Livingston in Polk County, Texas around the year 1890 to John and Caroline DeWalt. After getting educated in a rural area school, DeWalt entered Prairie View College in 1907 and graduated with honors in 1910. He moved to Houston and started working as a real estate agent with T.M. Fairchild. In 1913 he married Maud Pernetter. He served briefly as the principal for Independent Heights High School before opening the Lincoln Theater, the first exclusively black theater in Houston. He also maintained a real estate office in the theater's upper floors. The upper floors also served as a professional space and meeting place for African-American fraternities. Mr. DeWalt was a charter member of the Houston branch of the NAACP when it was founded in 1918 and served as its president during the 1920s. The KKK was growing and spreading its message of hate during these years. It became quite strong in Texas. The Klan controlled many town and city governments throughout the state and even had significant control in the Texas state legislature. Mr. O.P. DeWalt took a vocal stand against the Ku Klux Klan and worked as an influential civil-rights leader decades before the important Civil Rights Movement of the 1950s and 1960s. He fought against the Democratic Party's effort to exclude black participation by having “white only” Democratic voting primaries. Mr. DeWalt also worked for the establishment of a branch of the National Urban League in Houston. The National Urban League is an historic civil rights organization based in New York City that advocates on behalf of economic and social justice for African Americans and against racial discrimination in the United States. After speaking out passionately against the KKK, Mr. O.P. DeWalt was shot to death on April 24, 1931 in front of the Lincoln Theater. The police left it on the books as an unsolved crime. Funeral services were held both in Houston and in Livingston. He was buried where he was born. He packed a lot of good into his 41 years. So, today with this Daily Dose of Texas history, we honor the memory of this valiant man that stood and fought on the side of justice. This episode, we had a blast chatting with Cherie Scott - someone who truly does it all as a chef, entrepreneur, blogger, podcaster, and more. We talked about her blog and simmer sauce brand, Mumbai To Maine, as well as how she was inspired to begin cooking traditional Indian food from her childhood in her 30's, how food brings people together, the spices she couldn't live without, and much more! ABOUT OUR GUEST: Mumbai-native Cherie Scott left India at the age of 16 and moved to Vancouver, BC. With a few stops in New York City and New Jersey, Cherie has been anchored in Boothbay, Maine for over a decade. In 2018, Cherie curated a series on regional Indian cuisine offered exclusively at the Stonewall Kitchen Cooking School in York. In 2019, Cherie hosted season 1 of ‘Talking Food In Maine, Intimate Conversations', exploring Maine's rich culinary scene with some of Maine's most creative and accomplished culinary taste-makers at the historic Lincoln Theater in Damariscotta. In 2020, to celebrate Maine's bicentennial and gastronomic talent, Cherie launched Mumbai to Maine's podcast with a signature series: Maine's Bicentennial Food Podcast, in partnership with Maine Magazine's Eat Maine. The series takes a deep dive into Maine's food scene and story- past, present and future. Cherie launched her signature line of gourmet Indian simmer sauces with a trio of home-style sauces: Makhani, Saag and Caldine in December 2020. Inspired by her family's heritage recipes, these simmer sauces are crafted with freshly roasted and ground spice blends, all-natural, preservative-free, gluten-free and handcrafted in small batches here in Maine. ourpnwmusic.comWe talked with Sue Passmore of the Good Lovelies. They will be in Mount Vernon at the Lincoln Theater on May 2nd.We played the songs:Crabbuckit - written by Kevin Brereton, known as the artist k-osKiss Me in the Kitchen - Sue Passmore wrote for their album Let the Rain FallI See Gold Caroline Brooks brought the song to the group with co-writer Robyn Dell'Unto.Whiskey - A song from their first album; 2007's Oh My!Last Night - From their Burn The Plan album written by Kerri Ough. From https://goodlovelies.comKerri Ough, Sue Passmore, and Caroline Brooks – immensely talented vocalists and songwriters in their own right; however, it's their voices interwoven in harmony – powerful and pure, organic and inspiring – that elevates the Good Lovelies from impressive to peerless.Over the course of their decade-plus career, they've covered plenty of stylistic ground, adding tinges of pop, roots, jazz, and even hip-hop to their country folk core at various points. The trio first united in 2006 for a one-off performance and has since compiled a catalogue of four studio albums, a pair of EPs, a live album, and Christmas collection. Through it all, the unmistakable sound of their intertwined voices has been the sonic anchor, and that remains true as the Good Lovelies now look to push further into the mainstream with their most accessible and pop-influenced output to date.Their upcoming collection offers a perfect balance between a more modern production style and the wholesome musical influences that have made them a household name over the years. What's more, the songs themselves build on the Good Lovelies' familiar foundation with a widespread appeal.Website- https://goodlovelies.comFacebook- https://www.facebook.com/goodlovelies/Instagram- https://www.instagram.com/goodlovelies/

Anna Bitkina is an independent curator, director, and co-founder of The Creative Association of Curators TOK, an art organization founded in 2010 with Maria Veits. Anna lives and works between St Petersburg and The Netherlands, and she curates projects in Russia and different countries in Europe as well as in the US. She sees the curatorial practice as a multidisciplinary process that connects theory, science, philosophy, and politics in order to generate knowledge about the contemporary reality where art has an ability to articulate socio-political conditions and foster social changes. Her curatorial research often lay between historical analysis and the political imaginary where she combines her cultural background with current life experience. In her practice, Anna explores post-Soviet conditions in contemporary Russia and remnants of Soviet history in different social spheres like public space, local governance, educational and youth policies, media landscape. She is also interested in local and global implications caused by the accelerated capitalism in the region. An ongoing public art project ‘Critical Mass’ that she initiated and curates in St Petersburg since 2010 became a platform for conducting such research and developing knowledge on post-socialist conditions. The project is divided into seasons with a focus on different problematics. Four last seasons were conducted in 2011, 2013, 2015 and in 2016-2017. Development of speculative scenarios about possible political horizons in Russia and in the world have been central interests for her projects and projects of TOK. ‘Design Platform’ (2012-2014) and ‘School Museum: Creating History Together’ (2014-2017) conducted in one of the schools in St Petersburg aim at researching pedagogic conditions of the Russian system of education, its spatial and architectural structures and governmental strategies in shaping young citizens. Such projects by TOK like ‘Propaganda News Machine: Creating Multiple Realities in the Media’ (2016, Flux Gallery, New York City) and ‘States of Control’ (2017, HIAP Gallery, Helsinki) and aim at stimulating critical thinking around the topics of information manipulation, the history of propaganda, post-truth and constructing news during times of political unrest. ‘States of Control’ is scheduled to be presented at the Weisman Museum of Art in Minneapolis in March 2020. Jon Petz is born to be on stage – so much so that he left his highly successful career as a corporate vice president to fulfill his purpose and passion by helping others laugh louder, perform better, and achieve more. We discuss how he evolved from a corporate executive to a business magician to an opening keynoter and MC, and how you can better engage your audience in any situation (plus, we laugh a lot along the way). As a speaker and MC, Jon engages and energizes his audience using his amazing art of performance, inspiring stories, and the unique “It’s Showtime” performance philosophy to bring home the belief and genuine desire to create greater impact in what we do and with the people we do it for. According to Jon, it’s at this point we begin to demonstrate and achieve the sense of significance and making a difference. Jon doesn’t just talk about the importance of significance – he walks the walk. Moved by a moment in his own life, Jon and his wife created the Miracles & Magic Program with one simple goal: to provide children with a life threatening illness and their families a chance to feel “normal” again, experiencing the comedy and wonderment of magic and laughter. Jon also wrote a book on the subject, Significance… In Simple Moments, the proceeds of which are donated to charities like Miracles & Magic that help children in life-threatening situations. Her musician/singer father and her late mother who sang, wrote songs, and directed the choir, were the influences that shaped and encouraged her musical talent. She has been singing all of her life and she really started to take music seriously at the age of 14 when she answered the call of worship on her life. Encouraged by her Sunday school teachers she began to seek the Lord at an early age for confirmation of her destiny. Shortly thereafter she wrote her first song “Get Ready.” Many other songs would follow and by the age of 16 she started a group and started touring to local churches to share the gospel through song. As an adult, Philisha has taken her project solo and is excited to share a new sound of worship that incorporates all of the musical influences that she grew up listening to. She is currently working on a new project that includes the writing and musical collaboration of multiple talented writers and producers that helped her capture her journey and create a worship experience in a new and refreshing way.
