People used to talk behind my back and say “she's never going to make it”. I suppose they had many reasons to believe that. I was a first-time mom at 18, had two divorces by the age of 30, been diagnosed with two autoimmune diseases, adult A.D.D. and I have survived domestic abuse! Not what most people think when they imagine success. Do you feel me? Have you felt the same way? that people like you aren't meant for the nicer things in life, that you should settle and just be grateful for where you are? Then you're in the right place - together we can beat this! If this downtrodden, ADD, once young single mom, beat all the odds - then you can too. t took me 10 years to do it but I finally earned my business degree AND had a smooth 16-year-long career in corporate leadership. When we were kids, it usually didn't phase us to try new things—I mean, childhood is a time when we're always learning, right? And for the most part, if we don't get it right, we just dust ourselves off and try again. As adults, however, we don't tend to give ourselves the same kind of grace. We want to get things right the first time. That's why I loved my conversation with Darlene Turner, who was one of the first people who joined my 0-$100K Program. Today we’re chatting with Boss Lady Tori Gerbig. Tori is the founder and CEO of Pink Lily. Pink Lily is one of the fastest-growing online women’s clothing retailers in America. Pink Lily brings women an ever-changing assortment of apparel, footwear, and accessories. In 2013 Tori and her husband Chris had their first baby, Jackson. While on maternity leave with no income, Tori noticed the bills piling up. She started experimenting with online marketplaces selling various items to help make ends meet. Her online community of friends quickly grew from a few hundred members to over 10,000 in a short period of time. It was at this moment that Tori realized how passionate she was about building relationships with other women and helping support them through their fashion choices. In 2014, with no capital, Tori and her husband Chris created the online clothing website, Pink Lily. In this episode we’re touching on the explosive growth Pink Lily has had in the last few years, the learning curve from going from one to 200 employees, how connecting with social media influencers was pivotal to Pink Lily’s success, Tori’s unique style of marketing, and of course, juggling the work-life balance. “Really hone in on your customers. Get to know what they want, what they like, and what they buy. Then go after similar customers and market to them in a way that they respond.” - Tori Gerbig Episode Highlights: How Tori got started in e-commerce by selling odds and ends on various online sites Tori’s unique style of marketing - Asking customers what they’d like to see and showing them the design process Breaking the rules of how people think you should operate a business How Pink Lily grew organically in the beginning Hiring managers from Amazon that know warehouse logistics The pain and pleasure from Covid-19 How Tori juggles being a mom and working alongside her husband Chris The moment Tori’s water broke at work and how she immediately had to go to the hospital to give birth Why Tori is Instilling a work ethic in her kids and not giving them the world Connect with the Pretty and Punk Podcast: Pretty and Punk Website Pretty and Punk Podcast on Facebook Pretty and Punk Podcast on Instagram Spicy Lil Pepper on Instagram Punk Ass on LinkedIn Connect with Pink Lily: Instagram Facebook YouTube Pinterest

Linda MacMurdo’s journey began in the Democratic Republic of Congo. It was there that she was born to an African mother and a native Pittsburgh father who was also a Peace Corps volunteer. Linda spent much of her young childhood in various African nations, as her father moved the family from place to place for work. Civil and political unrest in Africa eventually led her family back to the U.S. Two years ago, Linda decided to honor her African heritage by starting The BANTU Collection, an online boutique featuring custom-designed and handmade clothing, home décor, and accessories imported from Africa. With financial support from a co-worker and a small Kiva loan, Linda was able to bring her dream to life. Anyone who has ever started a business knows how incredibly difficult it can be. Not only has she managed to launch a business, but she has done so in spite of cultural, language, and distance barriers that would intimidate even the most determined of entrepreneurs. Linda has thoughtfully curated a line of unique, unexpected, and skillfully made products through the relationships she has built with villages and artisans from her native homeland. The bespoke design and production process results in items that are truly one-of-a-kind. Today, Linda is realizing her vision of bringing the beautiful fashion designs and wide range of African styles to the American market. If you have any questions or if you’d like to chat, you can reach me at my contact info below. Subscribe & Download Listen on Apple Podcasts Listen on Google Play Follow us onSoundCloud Listen on Spotify Guest: Becky Beach https://youtu.be/XPXcXJe6uWw Episode Transcript 00:03 Ramesh: Hello everyone. Welcome to one more episode of the agile entrepreneur podcast. This is your host Ramesh Dontha. Today we'll be talking to an entrepreneur who has weathered through tough times before she made a very successful business by herself. Her name is Becky Beach, and by the way, I love the name Becky Beach, Becky Beach is a mompreneur who was in debt up to $150,000 before she started her online boutique. She was actually living from month to month and was barely making ends meet before her business. After the online boutique though she was debt free. So Becky nowadays helps other moms start their own businesses, save money, and live from home through her blog www.mombeach.com That's another interesting name there. So Becky, welcome. 00:59 Becky: Oh, thank you. I'm really excited to be here. 01:03 Ramesh: Fantastic. So Becky, so let's get straight to it. What were you, what was the work that you were doing when you were in that much of a debt around $150,000 if you could explain how you, not necessarily how you got into it, but essentially what were you doing? And what was the transformation? 01:23 Becky: Well, I was working for a small pain and injury clinic as a web developer. Like that's what I was doing, and they weren't paying very much. Like I was probably making like $20 an hour or less, you know, those weren't paying that much, you know, so I was like scraping by and I'll work like 60-hour week. Sometimes it was just a lot of stress. Then I got pregnant with my little child, you know, when I just couldn't, it just was really so much stress, you know, and hard to deal with, you know. They just weren't paying very much at all, you know. 01:51 Ramesh: So then what happens? You are in debt and then the work, you're not enjoying it. It's stressful. Then how did that switch come on that Hey, no, I need to start something else. I need to do something else. 02:04 Becky: Well, I got pregnant with like, we had a child, my husband, and I just said, I just can't go back to work. I don't think I could work 60-hour days you know in this condition, you know, when I was, I had a little child that I was taking a daycare. It was after three months he has already gone to daycare, you know, that's just too short, you know, and I was just worried about him all day. I couldn't focus on my work, you know, because I just had a little baby that I wanted to be with. So I said, cause I got to do something. Today in the guest chair we have self described accidental entrepreneurs Chioma and Uchenna, the Founders of Cee Cee's Closet NYC. What started with selling cute clutches that were brought back from Nigeria has expanded into a full fledged business incorporating products like headwraps, backpacks, and leather goods. Being a black-women-owned business to them meant having an opportunity to create highly functional products that tap into their Nigerian cultural heritage and specific needs. This is especially true when you think about their silk-lined headwraps. As two naturalistas, they wanted to remove the step of having to wear a bonnet or silk scarf underneath our headwraps to protect their hair. Therefore, they created a product that addressed that particular need. Most importantly, Chioma and Uchenna view Cee Cee's Closet NYC as an opportunity to have a positive economic impact on Nigeria. All of their products are made locally in Nigeria. They are making an impact and building a legacy at the same time. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It's not just in some of us; it's in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same.
