Shoot us a Text.Episode #1030: Today we're talking about the real hurdles to moving auto production stateside, catching up with Carlos Ghosn's new life as a leadership coach (and fugitive), and Amazon's surprising new experiment that lets shoppers stray beyond its walls.Show Notes with links:A quarter of U.S. automotive assembly capacity sat unused at the end of 2024, suggesting opportunity amid the backdrop of President Trump's tariffs. However, shifting production to underutilized plants is far more complicated than it sounds.Toyota, BMW, and Honda used over 80% of their U.S. production capacity, leaving little room for more output.Automakers like Stellantis, GM, Ford, and Nissan have more idle capacity but face logistical and investment hurdles.Stellantis' Warren Truck Plant has just 17% utilization but can't quickly absorb new models without major investment, despite being able to build related pickups and SUVs.Ford's Flat Rock Assembly Plant could theoretically take on new models like the Mustang Mach-E, but even the fastest transition would still take six months to a year to execute.Sam Fiorani of AutoForecast Solutions said: "The rhetoric that moving assembly of vehicles into open spaces is easy and quick is not accurate."Five years after his dramatic escape from Japan, former Nissan and Renault CEO Carlos Ghosn is living a quieter life in Lebanon — but remains an international fugitive still shadowed by legal battles.Ghosn lives in a disputed $20M mansion, running executive bootcamps for midlevel managers at a Lebanese university.Despite legal threats from France and Japan, Lebanon's refusal to extradite its citizens keeps him out of reach. He still denies all accusations, blaming Nissan insiders for orchestrating his downfall to block a deeper Renault-Nissan alliance.Ghosn remains bullish on globalization, calling recent tariff tensions “a joke” against broader interconnected trends. He criticized the post-split struggles of Nissan and Renault: “Nissan is begging for some financial help, and Renault is back to what it was before 1999 — a small European company.”In a surprising pivot from its traditional walled-garden strategy, Amazon is testing a program that lets customers shop directly from third-party brand websites — without leaving its app.Shoppers can either be redirected to brand sites or complete purchases through Amazon's “Buy for Me” checkout feature.Amazon handles payment transfer securely, while shipping, returns, and customer service stay with the brand. The move allows Amazon to collect deeper shopper data, enhancing ad targeting and product recommendations.Industry experts suggest Amazon is trading short-term sales for long-term insights and stronger ad business.Jason Goldberg of Publicis said: “The bigger share of a custoJoin Paul J Daly and Kyle Mountsier every morning for the Automotive State of the Union podcast as they connect the dots across car dealerships, retail trends, emerging tech like AI, and cultural shifts—bringing clarity, speed, and people-first insight to automotive leaders navigating a rapidly changing industry.Get the Daily Push Back email at https://www.asotu.com/ JOIN the conversation on LinkedIn at: https://www.linkedin.com/company/asotu/

One rite of spring is getting the sports model onto the road for a joyride. Another is the opening of Major League Baseball camps where the crack of bat on ball makes sweet music to so many. This week we were able to combine the two as we road tested the 2025 Honda Civic Si, one of our favorite performance sedans, in and around the Spring Training sites of several Major League Baseball teams near Phoenix.  Of course, as Host Jack Nerad rediscoveed, the Honda Civic Si offers a great deal for enthusiast drivers to like, starting with its 200-horsepower turbocharged four-cylinder engine and — even more to the point — its slick-shifting, rev-matching six-speed manual transmission. Nerad will offer a full report. Across the country, Co-Host Chris Teague and his family tested the mettle of the 2025 Hyundai Tucson compact crossover SUV. While Honda and Toyota have been the dominant players in this segmentfor decades, the recently revised Tucson gives those brands a strong run for their money. Both Teague and Nerad, who also tested the Tucson recently, will offer their views on this impressive player.  Our special guest this week is Sam Fiorani, vice president of global forecasting at Auto Forecast Solutions and a very knowledgeable industry observer.  With the car industry in a state of confusion based on tariff talk, changing regulations and the potential elimination of electric-vehicle subsidies, our interview with Fiorani will help bring what you need to know into sharp focus. In the new this week, we will attempt to answer a big question looming over the industry: will Stellantis get rid of Chrysler or Dodge? The global automaker has a new chairman, and reports are he is eyeing streamlining its operations, and that might put laggard brands into the dustbin of history. We'll have the details. Electric vehicle owners were more satisfied with their vehicles in 2024 than they were in 2023, but J.D. Power reports there are warning signs on the horizon. We'll have our comments on that along with more specifics. Another big question this week is can state DMVs take a page from the DOGE playbook to streamline and modernize their operations? Ending long lines and customer frustration seems like an impossible dream to most of us, but a new report suggests that is possible, and we'll tell you more.  And there is new controversy surrounding the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and Tesla. Chris and Jack will have their individual takes on that coming up.  Jack Nerad's newest book Jack is now offering his newest crime novel, Only One Thing Stays the Same, at a pre-publication price of just $4.99. We admit the Mercedes-AMG GLB 35 isn't quite as sleek and sexy-looking as its sibling, the GLA, but when you're at the controls of the compact sports utility, it immediately ceases to matter. The influx of 300+ horsepower is the biggest reason. Suddenly, you're not operating a mundane grocery-getter, but instead, you find yourself piloting an agile, goes-where-you-point-it sports sedan that just happens to be almost five and a half feet tall. The Motor Press Guild's annual Drive Day gave Host Jack Nerad the chance to reacquaint himself with the joys of the AMG GLB 35 4Matic+, which is the hot rod of the GLB lineup. At $59,050, it not only features an AMG-tuned version of a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder that delivers 302 horsepower, but also a well-tuned sport suspension that includes a multi-link rear. With giant brakes, 19-inch alloy wheels, and low-profile tires, the mashup proves irresistible. Nerad will tell you more in this episode. In this week's other road test, Co-host Chris Teague puts an all-new yet startlingly familiar vehicle to the test. The Mazda CX-70 is brand-spanking-new for the 2025 model year, and we'll bet you haven't seen one. But then it bears a remarkable resemblance to another vehicle that is significantly better known. Teague will describe the CX-70's lineage in much more detail and tell us how he enjoyed driving the plug-in hybrid version of Mazda's newest nameplate. This week our special guest is Sam Fiorani, Vice President of Global Vehicle Forecasting at AutoForecast Solutions. If you are thinking about buying a car this year, Sam can give you a great idea of what you can expect and how you can save some money. So we're sure you'll enjoy our discussion. In this week's news, both General Motors and Ford reasserted their faith in electric vehicles this past week. At the same time, both automakers have cut their current EV production plans as sales have slowed. We have to wonder whether they are crossing their fingers when they say that they have a firm belief in an electric-vehicle future. While EVs aren't selling as well as many had hoped, they are certainly using a lot of electricity. A new study shows how much and where. Of course, the expanded use of electricity has a lot of implications, and we'll explore them in this episode. In other news, Tesla hasn't been able to persuade California to call off its investigation into the way it has marketed its self-driving technology. And Toyota is doubling down on hydrogen despite the fact its Mirai hydrogen fuel cell vehicle has not garnered many sales. Both of those stories are worth exploring, too. Our two test vehicles this week couldn't be more different. The 2024 Honda Passport TrailSport is the brand's latest effort to cash in on the current off-road craze that continues to sweep the nation. With all-terrain tires, a trick torque-vectoring all-wheel-drive system and some appearance mods, the Passport TrailSport isn't just fun to say; it is also fun to drive. But will it do the job off-road? That is a question we raise in this episode of America on the Road. Co-Host Chris Teague had the opportunity to test the TrailSport in some of the wettest weather ever to hit the state of Maine. Was the Honda off-roader up to the challenge? He'll have the answer to that and more details as well. On the other side of the automotive coin is the 2024 Lexus LC 500 Convertible. It is hard to imagine a more on-road-oriented vehicle than this six-figure specialty car from Toyota's luxury brand. In its tech and driver assistance features, the LC 500 ragtop is as new as tomorrow, but under the hood, its 5.0-liter normally aspirated V8 engine is a definite throwback. Happily, we like throwbacks, especially when they offer more than 400 horsepower. The overall result is a car that is both fun to drive and fun to be seen in. We're power sliding into Monday as we talk about some record auto loan dept numbers. We also contrast that against the ongoing labor contract discussions. And did you know Rivian's are burning through rubber at an alarming rate?A record $1.5 trillion in auto loan debt looms over the U.S., with over 100 million Americans having some sort of auto loan. Continuing factors like residual pandemic effects on supply chains, the Fed's increasing rates and other economic shifts have escalated car ownership costs, leading to increased concerns about lending practices and growing consumer dissatisfaction. In 2023, the average monthly loan payment for new vehicles increased to $725…up from $650 in 2022. Used monthly payments are also up 2-3% YoY to $516 According to a CNN article, new auto loan delinquencies are rising and reached 7.3% in Q2 up from 6.9% in Q1. Additionally, Moody's warns that new credit card and auto loan delinquencies will both continue “rising materially,” peaking in 2024 at between 9% and 10%, compared with 7% pre-Covid.Stellantis' ambitious goal to produce a $25,000 EV is colliding with the United Auto Workers union's demands for better wages and benefits. As industry experts weigh in on the feasibility of such a price point, tensions rise over balancing affordability, profitability, and worker compensation in the evolving EV market.Stellantis' CEO Carlos Tavares emphasizes the importance of a $25,000 EV for job protection and absorbing additional costs, while UAW President Shawn Fain counters, stating, "Stellantis' business model is broken, and until they fix it, they'll never hit that $25,000 target."Industry experts, like Doug Betts of J.D. Power, suggest that achieving a $25,000 EV might require significant cost reductions and minimalistic designs, similar to Tesla's interiorsStephanie Brinley from S&P Global Mobility and Sam Fiorani from AutoForecast Solutions believe that producing a profitable EV at this price point is a long-term goal, possibly a decade away, and that immediate profitability for legacy automakers is unrealistic. The Rivian RT1 and R1S pickups that have progressive styling and a lot of power are receiving rising complaints on many Rivian driver's forums about the rate at which they are burning through tires with some owners having to replace tires rated by the manufacturer for 50k miles, as early as 6000 milesThe excessive front tire wear is linked to Rivian's “Conserve” drive mode, which switches the vehicle to front-wheel drive and lowers the ride height to maximize range. The lowered ride height in Conserve mode results in toe-in and increased negative camber, leading to accelerated and uneven tire wear.Recommendations include adjusting alignment and regular tire rotations to mitigate wear.Hosts: Paul J Daly and Kyle MountsierGet the Daily Push Back email at https://www.asotu.com/ JOIN the conversation on LinkedIn at: https://www.linkedin.com/company/asotu/ Read our most recent email at: https://www.asotu.com/media/push-back-email ASOTU Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/automotivestateoftheunion

Sitting in again for Jill is Paul Herrold of the Sons of Speed. Jill returns next week. Paul and Tom began the show correcting mistakes made last week. Both hosts were guilty of misstatements which have been begrudgingly corrected. Tom followed up on last week's podcast, which included an interview with Don Drucker of Chicago's famous Superdawg Drive-In. Having learned that the establishment's tamales are meat free—and he being vegetarian—Tom sampled the tamales. Listen to his review. Paul talked about paint-protection film (PPF), and why someone might want to consider having their car treated. Paul recently had his car protected, and is a believer in the process, though it can be pricey. Tom talked briefly about the 2023 Lexus LS 500h, which he recently reviewed. Though the car is not especially space efficient, and a little difficult to get in and out of, Tom is generally a fan of the large luxury sedan. Paul and Tom welcome Sam Fiorani of AutoForecast Solutions to the show in the second segment. Sam talked about his new podcast (find the link on Car Stuff Podcast Facebook page). Sam walked the hosts through a number of topics, including the realities of a Corvette crossover, automakers developing their own charging network, and why the new Volvo EX30 electric crossover is so affordable. Paul was then subjected to Tom's color quiz. Did Paul win? Listen in.

2023 Toyota Camry Hybrid Reminds Us Why We Love Cars

America on the Road

The 2023 Toyota Camry isn't a performance car. It doesn't offer sizzling acceleration or knife-edge handling. In fact, it is exactly what we used to describe as a family car. But as Co-Host Chris Teague found when he drove the Camry for a week in and around Washington, D.C., the current Camry reminds all of us why we enjoy driving. Admittedly, it doesn't offer the versatility of the ubiquitous crossover SUV, but it does offer a connection to the road that few crossovers can match. The Camry hybrid's 208 total horsepower certainly won't blow anyone away. There are scores of cars that offer more. But that doesn't factor in the almost instant torque available from its electric motor. Not only does it provide a quick boost of acceleration, but it also smooths out shifts so the Camry Hybrid provides a driving experience that nearly simulates an EV. While Chris Teague was testing the 2023 Toyota Camry, Host Jack Nerad and the entire Nerad family were spending their summer vacation testing the mettle of the 2023 Toyota Sienna minivan. Every Sienna is equipped with a hybrid powertrain offering 245 combined horsepower, and it has all the benefits just described in relation to the Camry hybrid. The Sienna proved itself to be a substantial vehicle that can transport as many as eight passengers, and the Nerads found it a perfect vehicle for their sojourn at a northeast Texas lake house. Whether traveling the potholed roads of rural Texas or the most pristine Interstate pavement, the Sienna offered excellent ride quality, more-than-acceptable acceleration, and surprisingly good handling. We'll tell you more about both Toyota “vacation cars” in this episode. In the news this week, just as the auto industry is recovering from COVID-19 and parts shortages, a big strike looms that could derail all the progress. And nearly 100 all-new electric vehicle models are set to come to market in the next three years. But there's only one problem, and we'll tell you what that is in this episode. We'll take a long look at the electric vehicle market and the government's plans going forward. Are the expectations realistic? Meanwhile, Tesla has rolled out a new incentive plan that could earn buyers some extra money. We'll have more info on that. Right now many folks want to know if this is a good time to buy a new or used car? Or should you wait? We have a great guest who has the answer to that question. Sam Fiorani is Vice President of Global Vehicle Forecasting at Auto Forecast Solutions. At the halfway point in the year, he and Host Jack Nerad are going to take a look at the industry to see if it's a propitious time to jump into the car market All that and more are coming up in this episode. A 12,000-pound WARN winch is optional. So you get the idea that this is a vehicle that is all-terrain ready. But how does a massive vehicle like this fare when confronted with the zero-degree temperatures and drifting snow of a Maine winter? That's just what America on the Road Co-Host Chris Teague found out this week, and he'll detail his experiences in this episode. In our other road test, Host Jack Nerad got up close to Honda's renewed love affair with hybrid power in the all-new 2023 Honda CR-V Hybrid. There was a time when Honda seemed completely uninterested in hybrid vehicles, but these days it has reconsidered that posture. The hybrid versions of the CR-V are not only the fuel economy leaders of the lineup, but they are also the most powerful and, importantly, most fun to drive. Honda expects to sell tens of thousands of them in the next several months, and Jack Nerad will offer his opinions about the 2023 CR-V Hybrid later in the show. If you're thinking about buying a car in the next year or so you'll want to hear this week's interview with Sam Fiorani, the VP of global forecasting for Auto Forecast Solutions. An expert on vehicle supply and demand, Fiorani has some incisive and surprising things to say about the current auto market. They're things you need to hear if you want to save money when you purchase your next car. In the news this week, Elon Musk and Tesla are in hot water again, this time about self-driving claims that have been made regarding some of its electric vehicles. Is there an issue or is the renewed investigation political retribution? We'll consider both alternatives coming up. And here's a question for you — does it cost more to refuel a conventional gasoline car or recharge an electric car? A recent study attempts to answer that question, and we'll tell you what the researchers found. Despite supply chain issues, rising interest rates in the United States, and competition from the Chinese, a major automaker has retained the title of the top-selling car manufacturer in the world. We'll tell you what that company is and fill you in on the details coming up in this episode of America on the Road.
