He trained as a sound engineer, working at recording studios and entertainment agencies before starting his own firm, Hellman Production, Inc, in 2003 in Los Angeles.  Swire and his team successfully produced attractive, personalized DVD and CD cases and custom merchandise like T-shirts, earning a Score award in 2009, for small business success. His business eventually grew so popular, that he decided to sell Hellman Production in 2013 to focus exclusively on the promotional product industry. In our episode today, we're back in Hollywood, and on this visit, we're connecting with Mr. Swire Ho, otherwise known as # the promo guy. Today we are talking about leadership as usual, however, our focus is on Sales and as you might imagine selling in a promotional product industry (SWAG as it is often referred to) is very much commodity-based. How do you differentiate yourself in such a crowded marketplace? Swire highlights something that's very valuable for all of us and that is the need to be able to target the right clients – as he mentions those that are prepared to pay full price and offer repeat business. And in this regard, he applies the Pareto Principle or as you may know the 80/20 rule. Here is an extract from our conversation as we start to get into it… “...Because there are hundreds, if not thousands of companies that do what I do. And then it's easy for a prospect nowadays to do a Google search, and they could say, "Can you match this price?" Then my margin gets squeezed. But also, I found out that there are types of clients that will pay me full price, plus more, and they only want to work with me. I'm like, "Wow, I'm onto something.." Once you identify the target audience, right, so you know, you're right. Ask yourself as many questions as you can, if you, let's say, if you're a new business, where you're just starting out, you have no client dream of your best client that you're going to have. Who are they? What did they do? And with the information, then you're going to ask yourself, what kind of magazines do they read? Or what kind of websites do they normally hang out with?” “We don't spend any afterthought we don't follow up with the client. I wanted to quickly let you know about the release of the audio version of my book, The Entrepreneur Ethos, narrated by David A. Conatser. Links are also in the show notes.  Now on to my guest today, Swire Ho, cofounder of Garuda Promo and Branding Solutions, a promotional merchandise company.  With a name that many people don't remember, Swire calls himself “the promo guy.” He and his wife had another business they sold in order to open this one, which focuses on providing branded merchandise. When covid hit, Swire worried about what would happen. But he did as many others did: he pivoted.  First he started sourcing face masks and then started selling the idea of dropshipping kits for virtual events. The idea came from watching his kids in virtual school, where they were given breaks to do activities and play games.  As the director of sales and marketing, Swire credits his love of talking to others for his success. He has realized that connecting with the gatekeepers in companies, such as the secretaries and assistants, have been the secret to networking. He makes himself available, asks them what they need, and follows up to make sure they are happy with the service.  Now let's get better together. Actions to Try or Advice to Take The key to good networking is knowing your buyer. In Ho's case, he knows that while they may not be the actual decision-makers, the gatekeepers are the ones to connect with to offer his services.  Similarly, if you're ordering branded merchandise, consider the audience and what they might do with it. Ho tells the story of a company that offered bottles in exchange for people at a marathon event who succeeded at doing a number of pull-ups.
