In this episode of Inside Great Minds with Adam Outland, we have a special guest I have looked up to as a mentor and example. Dan Moore joins me and shares incredible nuggets of inspiration from his new book, Control, Influence, Accept (For Now) Coping with a Future No One Can Predict. Dan grew up in Los Alamos, New Mexico, and was an honors graduate of Harvard. He holds an MBA, with honors, from Vanderbilt's Owen Graduate School of Management, where he was named class speaker. He started in the business world the same way many of us have: as a college student running his own business -- in the Southwestern Advantage Summer Sales and Leadership Program. Southwestern Advantage is the oldest direct-selling company in America and the founding member of the Southwestern Family of Companies based in Nashville. Dan paid his tuition to Harvard by selling educational books door-to-door to families and building sales teams.  Dan was promoted to District Sales Manager with Southwestern Advantage upon graduation. He pioneered many roles within the company, eventually serving as Vice-President of Marketing for many years. He is credited with modernizing the company's sales school and mission statement, developing its highly-regarded product line, and helping to launch new businesses within the company.  In July of 2007, he was named President of Southwestern. From an 18-year-old summer intern to President, he never worked anywhere else. He served on the company's Board of Directors until his retirement in January 2023. He presently serves on the boards of the Direct Selling Association and the Direct Selling Education Foundation. He is also a Co-Founder of SBR Consulting and Southwestern Consulting, also members of the Southwestern Family of Companies. These firms are dedicated to elevating sales globally by transforming the culture of sales and sales leadership within their client companies. In total, he taught more than 100,000 people how to sell, how to lead, and how to get on the path toward achieving their goals in life.  Dan also served as an adjunct faculty member at Vanderbilt's Owen Graduate School of Business and speaks regularly to business and collegiate audiences. In his spare time, he enjoys playing the guitar and piano and is an avid runner. Since the age of 51, he has completed 24 half-marathons in four countries and also completed in the 2011 New York City Marathon finishing in the top half out of more than 46,000 runners. He is a past Master of Ceremonies for TEDx Nashville.  Dan met his wife, Maria, through selling books together when they were students. She is from Portugal. They have been married for 45 years and have three adult children and one grandchild.

So many in the sales and real estate industry rush to Social Media to tell everybody what we do, to ask for the referrals, to ask for business…when in reality you should be going about it a completely different way. Jeremy Miner, a chairman of Seventh Level, a global Sales Training company, joins Jeff on the show today to discuss strategies based on psychology that lead to consumer interest, engagement, sales, and incredible success. Closers Are Losers is Jeremy's Podcast and he has a new book, “Selling To An Unsellable Generation”. Jeremy majored in Behavioral Science and Psychology in college and the way that he saw people selling did not make any sense. How do you learn to get your prospects to pull you in rather than just push and push for sales? Jeff asks Jeremy what led him into studying Behavioral Science and Psychology? Jeremy shares that he actually dropped out his senior year, 13 credits shy of graduating and why. People are wired to do things consciously and subconsciously; Understanding those things makes selling easier as you can also pinpoint triggers in consumer behavior. How you are perceived by your prospects is what matters. Jeremy explains where he sees a lack of understanding in the motivation of consumers among the groups of professionals they train. Real estate agents specifically do not find out the important details enough. Can you come up with 2-3 generic problems that most people you associate with have and then have solutions? Education is great but it may not stick in people's brains, Jermey explains why. Why do people get frustrated when they are selling their house? How do you keep the explanation short of how what you do is helpful to other people? If it is too long it becomes a sales pitch again. Jeremy asks Jeff to identify top problems for buyers and sellers in the market currently that many could relate to. How do you automatically attract prospects  and differentiate yourself? Jermey explains how when you speak the same as all the other sales people your prospects have heard you trigger them to shut down. There are right questions to ask with the right tone. What is it like? Jeremy says that prospects pick up on social cues in 7-12 seconds. Social cues are so important, they have a very primitive root but they still apply today because people get tired of it and have built walls of resistance.  Jeremy educates about neuro emotional persuasion questions that disarm the guards of prospects. You have to learn to come across detached from the sales outcome. Why not prevent objections? Jeremy says you can point out objections right away and then make a connecting question. Jeff asks Jeremy how he would carry on an open house conversation with objection. You have to slow down your cadence to cause deeper thinking. How do you build the gap from where customers are to where they want to be? How would Jeremy apply his strategies going up against other agents at a listing? When you understand the emotional side of a buyer or seller they will view you as the expert.  How does this psychology apply to Social Media postings? Jeremy goes through some call scenarios and how to neutralize conversations. People buy based on who they think can get them the best result. If they like you that is great but they have to really know and trust you. While the world has gone into lockdown and economies have crashed, one type of business has been seeing double-digit growth – direct selling. Independent consultants for big names such as Body Shop at Home, Forever Living, Avon, Usborne Books at Home and Arbonne have been reporting huge increases in sales and recruitment in response to regular shops closing their doors. But while proponents of ‘multi-level marketing’ or ‘direct to consumer’ selling say it provides an opportunity for women to earn money on their own terms, critics say that the business model sits precariously close to being a pyramid scheme. So what do women need to know? Jenni talks to Susannah Schofield, the DG of the Direct Selling Association; Hannah Martin of the Talented Ladies Club; and Clare from Hertfordshire, who talks about her experience of working in the industry. Meg Learmonth was just 18 when she was appointed drummer for the Stormzy collaborator Mura Masa. You have probably heard of multi-level marketing also called MLM or network marketing. A multi-level marketing company is a company that recruits people to sell their products to their network including their friends and family. Network marketers typically buy inventory and then try to sell it. They can also recruit people underneath them and create a triangular shape in which they can collect commissions on the people underneath them who are also making sales. Casey Bond is a certified personal finance counselor and a lifestyle reporter for Huff Post covering money, home, and living. Her work has also appeared on Business Insider, Yahoo! Finance, MSN, The Motley Fool, U.S. News & World Report, Forbes, TheStreet, and more. Casey has been reporting on MLM’s for the past year.  The big question many people wonder is if multi-level marketing is a great business opportunity or an opportunity to lose thousands. On today’s episode, Casey shares her expertise to help you make the decision that is right for you and help you beware of possible red flags.  Show Notes: [01:13] - A multi-level marketing company is a company that recruits people to sell their products to their friends and family and their network. It is also called network marketing or direct selling.  [01:29] - They typically buy inventory and then try to sell it. They can also recruit people underneath them and create a triangular shape in which they can collect commissions on the people underneath them who are also making sales.  [02:14] - You will find a wide range of products offered including everything from kitchen knives to insurance products.  [02:23] - Most multi-level marketing companies sell products that are traditionally marketed towards women.  [04:06] - These days the gig economy is huge. One-third of adults are involved in the gig economy somehow.  [05:02] - It is often presented as a way to make a ton of money in your spare time, and be able to win vacations, cars, and extra products. That is usually the case for a small percentage of people involved in MLM’s who usually got in very early and built a huge downline.  [05:41] - The key for being successful in an MLM is not necessarily making a lot of sales, but instead recruiting a lot of people underneath you.  [06:37] - A big red flag is having to buy your inventory upfront.  [08:10] - Another big red flag is when the initial details of this opportunity are vague or coming from someone you don’t know very well.  [09:40] - MLM’s really play into the emotional side of people who would really like to have something of their own and who would really like to become more financially independent.  [10:39] - The FTC watches and keeps an eye on the MLM industry.  [12:14] - Illegal pyramids schemes do operate legally until they are caught.  [12:50] - The Direct Selling Association oversees all MLM and direct selling companies.  [13:48] - Casey is very hesitant to recommend multi-level marketing to anyone because it is so easy to get in a hole with debt or overspending when there are so many other ways to make extra income.  [14:28] - It’s best to go out and create something for yourself instead of relying on an MLM.  [14:52] - The FTC does have an option on their website to report companies that are operating questionably.  [15:46] - Working for an MLM can put strains on relationships and friendships.  Thanks for joining us on Easy Prey.
