This week, in Aspen, Colorado, when a woman discovers her friend's dead body, wrapped up like a mummy, the whole town freaks out. The victim was a friend to uncountable celebrities, even having her baby shower with Goldie Hawn. The evidence leads investigators to believe that more than one person must've done the killing, but one man says it was him, and him alone. But is he covering for his wife & the victim's friend? A twisted tale of lies & betrayal!! Along the way, we find out that millionaires can't afford to live in Aspen anymore, that when you hang out with Hunter S Thompson, you're probably familiar with drugs, and that just because a murderer says he murdered alone, it doesn't mean he's telling the truth!!Hosted by James Pietragallo and Jimmie WhismanNew episodes every Thursday!Donate at: patreon.com/crimeinsports or go to paypal.com and use our email: crimeinsports@gmail.comGo to shutupandgivememurder.com for all things Small Town Murder & Crime In Sports!Follow us on...twitter.com/@murdersmallfacebook.com/smalltownpodinstagram.com/smalltownmurderAlso, check out James & Jimmie's other show, Crime In Sports! Members of Veterans for Peace are once again not sitting idly by while the world devolves into calamity. Members Tarak Kauff, Ellen Davidson, and Anthony Donovan join us to talk about their peace walk which originated in Maine with a destination of Washington, D.C. on July 5, 2024. We caught up with them in Pennsylvania where they had just left Philadelphia on the way to Delaware and President Biden's home, Maryland past military polluters and war industry facilities to DC where they will take a stand for Peace. So far most of the walk has been inspiring with only enough problems to let them know that work has to be done and Peace is the goal. You can still join this walk, so listen to find out how. We then finish with a great version of Take Me Home Country Roads by Playing for Change.

Join A Cure in Sight to interview guest, Heather McMenamin, a patient originally from England, currently living in Houston, TX, and diagnosed with ocular melanoma in 2021. “I went for my annual eye exam 9-22-21, (because of COVID it was actually 18 months since my previous eye exam, normally done every year). I was asymptomatic and more concerned about what new frame I might pick out. The doctor was quite concerned about the large mass in my left eye and said I needed to see a retina specialist STAT. I was able to get an appointment for the next morning at which time the doctor dilated my eyes and very quickly said I needed to see an Ocular Oncologist - he did not give me a diagnosis but at this point I knew it was serious. I was referred to Dr. Amy Schefler and got an appointment 9-29-21. After hours of testing she diagnosed me with Uveal Melanoma. I had Brachytherapy 11-01-21, plaque was in for 7 days. That was an odd experience to look back on. I just had my 2nd year anniversary and so far no sign of METS, next scan 10-19-23 and I began eye injections last month as I have signs of retinopathy.” If you take anything from Heather's episode, we hope you glean that knowledge is so empowering as a patient, and that the knowledge you share with others to help spread awareness makes such a key difference. Neema Avashia was born and raised in the bedroom suburban community of Cross Lanes, West Virginia. She's an Appalachian through and through. She can sing Take Me Home Country Roads by heart. She knows the state's mountains and waterways by heart. In her new collection of essays, “Another Appalachia: Coming Up Queer and Indian in a Mountain Place,” she describes feeling more hillbilly than hindu. She wrestles with big questions about identity in her book. Could she really call herself Appalachian if her family didn't go back several generations like her neighbors? What are the ways in which the ethics of community and kinship interact with an ethics of survival and assimilation? What does it mean to grow up in a business environment like chemicals or coal that extracts so much from its places and people? And what does it mean to see the people you love posting vile, hateful things about immigrants and people of color on Facebook? Neema now lives in Boston as a teacher and advocate for her students and school. On this episode of the Reckon Interview, she describes her Appalachian upbringing and how it feels to love and support a place from afar – even on days when it doesn't feel like it gives you the love you deserve in return. Our Inside Appalachia team recently won several awards for our reporting. This week, we’re listening back to some of these stories, including one about the John Denver classic, “Take Me Home Country Roads,” which was first recorded 50 years ago in 1971. And we’ll learn how indie pro-wrestling in Southern West Virginia was able to keep going through the pandemic — with drive-in shows. We’ll also hear about two Welsh storytellers and their fascination with Appalachia.
Our Inside Appalachia team recently won several awards for our reporting. This week, we're listening back to some of these stories, including one about the John Denver classic, “Take Me Home Country Roads,” which was first recorded 50 years ago in 1971. “There was this overall mood of homesickness, not just for West Virginia but for our country. The song was born into that,” said Sarah Morris, an English professor at West Virginia University who is writing a book about “Country Roads.” And we'll learn how indie pro-wrestling in Southern West Virginia was able to keep going through the pandemic — with drive-in shows. We'll also hear about two Welsh storytellers and their fascination with Appalachia. We'll listen back to those stories, and more, in our special awards episode of Inside Appalachia.

Navigatable? Distillerer? This week’s podcast has ideal examples for why those should be real words, and we agree that “checking for ticks” and “getting a back rub” never end there. Plus, this week’s destination inspires us to break out in a spontaneous chorus of “Take Me Home Country Roads”.

John Denver's hit song "Take Me Home, Country Roads" is one of the most revered pieces of music in China, and millions of Chinese children learned English by singing the lyrics. Cimcie Nichols joins the show to talk about her father Roger, who was a legendary music producer and electronics pioneer, who traveled with Denver to both China and the USSR, and the impact both men made in the 1980s.

Episode Overview: 400 years ago this month, William Shakespeare shuffled off this mortal coil but the show must go on, so OverDrive's Professional Book Nerds are discussing the man behind the myth in our latest episode. We also talk about whether or not it really matters if William Shakespeare actually wrote all of the plays attributed to him. After all, what's in a name? That which we call a rose by any other name would smell as sweet. Regardless of reading choices, remember -- when the question is asked To Read Or Not To Read, the answer should always be to read! Along with doing some Shakespeare fangirling, we cover all of the books we've recently read, some of the upcoming books we are (not so) patiently waiting for, and also offer tips on getting through book ennui.
