On today's episode, I talk to musician David Longstreth. Originally from Southbury, CT, David recorded his first album The Graceful Fallen Mango after dropping out of college. After returning to finish his degree, he began recording under the name Dirty Projectors, and in 2003, Western Vinyl released their first album The Glad Fact. They continued to record albums and slowly built a name for themselves in the thrumming Brooklyn music scene of the aughts. In 2009, Domino released their album Bitte Orca to a great deal of acclaim, and in all, the band has released 20 albums and EPs; their latest, Song of the Earth, is a collaboration with the German orchestral group s t a r g a z e, and it's fantastic! Episode 133 Sonic Adventures in Electronic Composition—The Ashley, Smith, and Hamilton Mix Playlist Time Track Time Start Introduction –Thom Holmes 05:35 00:00 1. Tom Hamilton, “London Fix 2” from London Fix (2003 Muse Eek). Composed and produced by Tom Hamilton; Programmed by Michael J. Schumacher. Tom Hamilton first made his living in audio production then gradually shifted all of that work to new music. Tom worked on almost all of the late Robert Ashley CDs and tours since 1990. This disc is subtitled "Music Changing with the price of Gold. An environment of continuous electronic music created through a programming residency at Engine 27, New York City. Please play softly.” 08:13 05:42 2. Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith, “Who I Am & Why I Am Where I Am” from The Kid (2017 Western Vinyl). Composed, produced, and performed by Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith. Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith is an American composer raised on Orcas Island in northwest Washington state. She attended the Berklee College of Music in order to study composition and sound engineering. Smith is a vocalist, classical guitarist, and electronic musician using a variety of modular setups. 05:20 13:56 3. Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith, “I Am Curious, I Care” from The Kid (2017 Western Vinyl). Composed, produced, and performed by Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith. 03:44 19:22 4. Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith, “I Will Make Room For You” from The Kid (2017 Western Vinyl). Composed, produced, and performed by Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith. 04:58 23:08 5. Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith, “To Feel Your Best” from The Kid (2017 Western Vinyl). Composed, produced, and performed by Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith. 06:20 28:07 6. Robert Ashley, “Superior Seven” from Superior Seven / Tract (1995 New World Records). Flute and computer programming, Barbara Held; Computer Programming, processing, and mixed by Tom Hamilton; synthesizer voices designed by Robert Ashley and Tom Hamilton; composed by Robert Ashely. Ashley was mostly known for his modern operas composed of dialog and new music. As a result, this instrumental work may not be what you expect from him. Superior Seven dates from 1988, just after the introduction of MIDI. Ashley fully explored MIDI for this work, writing a solo flute part with piano and a MIDI orchestra. Music was written for a flute player and pianist and audible cues triggered the engagement of MIDI instrumental parts controlled by a participating electronic musician (Hamilton). I saw this performed live and the results were startling. 30:15 34:16 Opening background music: Tom Hamilton, “Region 6” (excerpt) from Sebastian's Shadow (1997 Monroe Street Music). Electronics and composed by Tom Hamilton. Sebastian's Shadow follow the harmonic order found in J. S. Bach's Fantasia And Fugue No. 4 (BWV 542) (15:23). Additional opening, closing, and other incidental music by Thom Holmes. My Books/eBooks: Electronic and Experimental Music, sixth edition, Routledge 2020. Also, Sound Art: Concepts and Practices, first edition, Routledge 2022. See my companion blog that I write for the Bob Moog Foundation. For a transcript, please see my blog, Noise and Notations. Original music by Thom Holmes can be found on iTunes and Bandcamp.
I am fortunate enough to occasionally have labels or artists connect with me about new music they have coming out. Sometimes those discussions result in a guest mix. Which brings us to this latest mix. Daniel Field, owner/founder of Imaginary North, reached out about some new music coming out on his excellent ambient label. He has a new album out under his Kilometre Club moniker so we figured it would be a great time for a guest mix. Here's what Daniel has to say about this collection: "I am so excited to share my new triple album, An Alphabet of Distance, and wanted to create a mix that reflects the idea of closeness. As a result, I looked to music being made in and around my hometown Toronto, thinking about some of our growing ambient community, as well as reflecting on the past. While putting this together, I quickly began to notice themes and trends that have permeated local ambient, electronic, and experimental music from this vast and vibrant city. More than anything, the vast array of instruments used across this mix feels like a connect-the-dots of the diverse, complex, and cosmopolitan nature of the city. In 100 minutes, on top of the usual guitars and synthesizers, you'll hear harp, bass clarinet, saxophone, kulintang gongs, kalimbas, horns, a bridge, and so many more components that come together beautifully. The title of the mix is named after Toronto's most annoying and traffic-filled major thoroughfare, one that has recently undergone partial demolition and multiple lane closures, but is still such a pivotal artery of the city. An Alphabet of Distance is out now as a digital download or double CD from Imaginary North." John Mark Lapham is a composer, producer and animator from Abilene Texas. His newest effort Voids, under the moniker Old Fire, is a collaborative audio collage that illustrates the isolation and the cinematic landscape of his West Texas upbringing. In this episode Joe and John Mark discuss the dark inspiration behind the record, why his music tends to celebrate the visual, and why he worked with multiple vocalists (Bill Callahan, Emily Cross, Adam Torres, and Julia Holter) . On today's episode, I talk to musician Emilie Rex and musician/filmmaker Rick Alverson AKA Lean Year. As a musical duo, Emilie and Rick have been making music together for a number of years, and their first self-titled album was released in 2017 to acclaim from publications like Pitchfork and NPR Music. In addition to their musical work, Rick is also a lauded indie film director, whose movies include The Comedy starring Tim Heidecker and The Mountain starring Jeff Goldblum. Lean Year's latest album Sides was just released on Western Vinyl, and it's great! This is the website for Beginnings, subscribe on Apple Podcasts, follow me on Twitter.
I don't do these year-end jazz mixes every year. Most of the time I'm just too lazy. I don't keep close track of what came out and what I liked. At some point this year I started tossing individual tracks into a playlist and that helped me remember what I enjoyed in 2021. So here's my Jazz 2021 mix. It is by no means a "Best of" mix. It's merely a collection of jazz-ish tracks from albums I liked this year. And of course some of the tunes lean a bit toward ambient. Cheers! "Dirty Projectors" started out as a solo project from founding member David Longstreth, who wrote, recorded and self-released the first two albums while he was studying music at Yale University. During his summer breaks he would go on tours throughout the USA, playing mostly in small rock clubs organized by DIY promoters who he had connected with via Myspace. It was during these early years that David would also connect with other musicians, in order to create a band and bring his albums to life on stage. The line-up has morphed drastically over the years, encompassing over 20 different individuals, but it was the experience of putting together the live band that inspired David and his co-musicians to continue the collaborations in the studio, and since then "Dirty Projectors" have very much put together music in a collaborative sense.Fast forward almost 20 years to 2020, and we see yet another line-up change. This time 5 full time members who were introduced to listeners by 5 separate EPs that dropped throughout 2020, together with cover artwork provided by David's brother Jake Longstreth. For the full story and our music picks, tune in to this week's installment of "Roots to Grooves"!To listen to the full episode, including the featured music, visit... signlradio.com"Roots to Grooves" is a production of SIGNL.https://www.signlradio.comhttps://www.instagram.com/signlradiohttps://www.twitter.com/signlradiohttps://www.facebook.com/signlradiohttps://www.mixcloud.com/signlhttps://open.spotify.com/user/96mhz6qfjoztxbl2dpm0uj903?si=aAZpsoEnRAKdx85kr1QWhg

Ambient Meditations Vol 40 - Mint Julep This week we tap indie poptronic duo Mint Julep to wind us down with a unique blend of uplifting swirls and a dash of melancholy. Their new album In a Deep & Dreamless Sleep is out now on Western Vinyl and is the perfect record to put you in a state of reflection after this insane and wild year of lockdowns and social distancing. With dabbles of synths, lofi noise, and soothing echoes, it's one you will probably put on repeat. Their mix is almost the perfect, slightly more chilled companion for their album, so stacking them together is a great way to wind down your weekend. It's not quite derby time yet, but grab yourself a copper mug and some good bourbon and whip up a Julep for this audio adventure, you'll probably need two. Ambient Meditations Mix By Mint Julep: 1. Recently John and I had the chance to catch up and and do a breakdown of our debut collaboration, 'Du Nord', out now on Western Vinyl. This was a bit of a trip down memory lane for us as this album is a culmination of close to two years of work. We won't spoil too much in the description but dive on in and open the hood on 'Du Nord.' We had a great time making this album and appreciate you taking a listen.
"Photo Ops is the LA-based project of Terry Price. Following a move from Nashville, his songwriting shifted towards a more personal, folk-tinged sort of pop. What remains is his super-attuned sense of melody, in what he refers to as “adult lullabies.” We caught up with him and get into some of the inspiration behind his latest work, and he shares an exclusive, intimate acoustic performance, recorded at his home studio. On today's episode I talk to musician Cara Beth Satalino of the band Outer Spaces. Originally from the small rural town Pittstown, NY, Cara has been playing music since she was young. She moved to Athens, GA after college and formed the band Witches, a fantastic punk trio which put out two 7”s and a full-length record, Forever, and a few years later formed the band Outer Spaces. As Outer Spaces, Cara's written a number of EPs as well as two LPs, 2016's A Shedding Snake, and her latest Gazing Globe, which was released earlier in the summer on Western Vinyl. Raised on Orcas Island off the coast of Washington state, Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith's compositions are surreal yet rooted in nature. Combining the organic elements of her upbringing with the technological prowess gained from her studies at Berklee College of Music, Kaitlyn's impact on modern music is distinct and significant. Informed by her experimentation and the unique sounds of the Buchla 100 synthesizer, Kaitlyn's music has put her on the path to global recognition. This upward trajectory was later cemented with the release of her 2015 full-length, Euclid, on Western Vinyl. The following year saw the launch of her celebrated 2016 album, EARS, as well as a collaboration with new age pioneer Suzanne Ciani. Both EARS and Kaitlyn's subsequent full length album The Kid have earned numerous best-of nods from the likes of Pitchfork, NPR, Rolling Stone and SPIN. Additionally, Kaitlyn has been regularly scoring film, TV shows and spots for brands. Her collaborations include projects with Google, Reggie Watts and Ben Dickinson’s short film Brasilia, as well as the 2018 Duplass brothers film Duck Butter. Kaitlyn's participation in the 2018 Telekinesis event saw her performing with the BBC Orchestra, and later that year she headlined alongside Grizzly Bear and TV On The Radio at the Hollywood Bowl. https://www.instagram.com/kaitlynaurelia/http://eastforest.org/podcast
Originating from Pennsylvania, Goldmund is the alias of Keith Kenniff, a producer whom has received critical acclaim for his contemporary take on modern electronic music and neo classical. He has been recognised alongside the likes of Hauschka, Dustin O'Hallora and many more and has been enterprisingly busy to boot. This month marks the release of a new album on Western Vinyl, titled "Occasus" the album draws upon few elements and blends carefully timed instrumentation to create an effect which is far bigger than anticipated. We invited him to deliver a mix, whilst not strictly a disc jockey he goes deep through influential elements of his musical progression and takes us on a wild existential journey.
Pamela Stein Lynde is a busy person. She is a singer, composer, producer, and music educator. She began her career as a classically trained singer but as the years went on she realized that her abilities were applicable in other areas. We go into detail about the journey of her career and how she was able to create two non-profits that help musicians, composers, and singers. MEET PAMELA STEIN LYNDE Praised for her “rich dramatics” (The Boston Globe), Pamela Stein Lynde is a versatile soprano, composer, contemporary music performer, music educator, and producer, known for inspiration, introspection, and passion in all aspects of her work. Recent performances have included premiering Lesley Flanigan’s haunting sound sculpture VOICES for four singers and loop pedals at Roulette; premiering New York-based composer Eric Lemmon’s The Impossible Will Take a Little While with the Highline Chamber Ensemble at the DiMenna Center for Classical Music; and performing a concert of chamber music by contemporary female composers, including a premier by Philadelphia-based composer Jenny Beck, at the National Opera Center. The 2015 launch of her company Stone Mason Projects has brought exciting performances of contemporary vocal chamber music to the National Opera Center, Arts on Site, Wilmer Jennings Gallery, and multiple other venues across the ti-state area, about which reviews have said, “The singing was stellar, on par with anything I’ve heard recently at higher profile venues such as Zankel Hall or National Sawdust. These concerts deserve a wider audience.” In the fall of 2016, Stone Mason Projects released its first music video, From the Mountain, a co-production with Contemporary Undercurrent of Song Project. Stone Mason’s upcoming endeavors include the commissioning and producing of a new chamber opera and the launch of the inaugural New Hope Sound(e)scape Festival in New Hope, PA in June of 2017. Stone Mason Projects has appeared on a panel discussing contemporary opera creation with will New York Opera Alliance during New York Opera Festival and will be presenting this May at the third annual New Music Gathering conference at Bowling Green State University in Ohio. Pamela has appeared as a singer in prior seasons with Helix New Music Ensemble, The Nouveau Classical Project, American Opera Projects, Beth Morrison Projects, Rhymes With Opera, Saratoga Fine Arts Festival, Yamaha Concert Artist Series, Yale’s New Music, New Haven series, and many others. She has worked with award-winning composers including David Lang, Tristan Perich, Jacob Cooper, Trevor Weston, Daniel Felsenfeld, Lisa Bielawa, Jenny Beck, and many others. She appears as a vocalist on minimalist composer Alexander Turnquist’s album Flying Fantasy, released on the Western Vinyl label. She was a featured guest composer at Phoenix’s OME New Music Marathon concert in 2015 and has had her compositions premiered by Patchwork American Song Project in both New York and Chicago, Guided Imagery Opera, Princeton-based group CUSP, and many other ensembles across the country. Pamela has taught voice, composition, music theory, vocal pedagogy, music history, performance practice and chamber music at the College of Saint Elizabeth, Rutgers University’s Mason Gross School of the Arts, and City College of New York. Pamela teaches masterclasses and workshops and gives lectures on creating new music for voice at colleges, universities, and conservatories around the country. She was invited to speak about teaching new music in higher education at the inaugural New Music Gathering conference at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. Her organization Your Music Bus, co-founded with superstar composers Lisa Bielawa and Aaron Jay Kernis, has been serving the needs of the university and conservatory composition students and departments across the country since 2014. "Я очень хорошо помню это жуткое чувство: та маленькая голубая горошина - это Земля. Чёрт. Я поднял большой палец и зажмурил один глаз. Земля целиком исчезла за моим пальцем. Наверное, можно подумать, что я чувствовал себя как гигант. Нет, я чувствовал себя маленьким-маленьким-маленьким." Нил Армстронг Треклист 1. Makyo - Suzhou River (Underwater Dub Mix) 2.
