In This EpisodeIt's 1:00 PM May 5th, 1864 -- Brigadier General Lysander Cutler's famed Iron Brigade advanced in tandem with Bartlett through woods immediately south of Saunders Field. Although Bartlett is able to break through, Cutler meets fierce resistance as his men struggle to fight half in the openness of Saunders Field, and half in the dense thickets of The Wilderness. As the battle rages, the Iron Brigade soon discovers the dangers of fighting an invisible enemy.Notable Quotes"An elderly gentleman, spare of frame, with silvery hair, a beard nearly white, and beneath heavy eyebrows of an iron-gray color, are keen, penetrating dark eyes. His step is somewhat uneven, owing to a severe wound received at Gainesville. From behind a somewhat grave and severe aspect, shines out a kindly, even genial manner that wins you at once." -- Rufus Dawes' Memoir (about General Lysander Cutler)"All semblance of line of battle was gone and there were gaps everywhere between regiments and brigades."-- General Warren's Aide"Look to your right!"-- Officer, 6th Wisconsin"At Chickamauga there was at least a rear, but here there ain't neither front nor rear. It's all a [...] mess! And our two armies ain't nothin but howlin' mobs!” -- A Confederate prisoner to his captors"Where is my second line? Bring up my second line!" -- Wadsworth riding back and forth, trying to reform his Federal lines"It met with the greatest loss of any regiment in the battles of the Wilderness.” -- 7th, Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry Regiment HistorySupport the War Yankee PodcastEvery episode is a work of passion that requires a lot of coffee. Send us a Positive Review! In this episode, Valerie shares an inspiring journey of self-discovery and spiritual growth with The Wholeness Network. The theme was Brene Brown's exploration of the concept of "Braving the Wilderness" and on the heels of three years of learning to live & love one's truth at a potentially high social cost, Val felt that she had a couple of things to say about this. This episode is a sharing of history, emotion on both ends of the spectrum and ultimately, a tale of courage, compassion, and finding one's true place in the world. 00:00 Finding My Path: Early Struggles and Discoveries00:40 A Surprising Call to Ministry01:06 Discovering a Passion for Therapy02:38 The Journey to Graduate School03:18 Embracing Complexity in Faith and Life04:40 Launching a Podcast: Unexpected Success07:40 Understanding the Faith Journey08:11 Stages of Faith and Personal Growth10:25 Challenges and Courage in Faith Transitions15:40 The Role of Compassion and Empathy23:45 Trusting Oneself and Embracing the Divine Within27:49 The Price and Reward of Spiritual Journeys28:05 Experiences of Resonance and Support33:28 Navigating Faith and Personal Growth42:36 Understanding Patriarchy in Faith Communities50:58 The Impact of Enmeshed Family Systems58:22 Embracing Wholeness and Self-Integration Afterward: After their forced resignation from the LDS church in March of 2025, Val & Nathan were invited to share their stories on about a dozen podcasts. In this sacred and deeply personal follow-up to last week's episode, I share the story of Hagar—a woman in Scripture who walked through the wilderness not once, but twice. Discarded, unseen, and weary, she was met by the God who called her by name. And she became the first person in the Bible to give God a name in return: El Roi (pronounced El Roh-EE)—The God Who Sees Me.If you're in a season of feeling forgotten, this episode will remind you: God sees you. He hears you. And He has not abandoned you.✨ In this episode, I share:How Hagar's story in Genesis 16 and 21 mirrors our modern-day wilderness seasonsWhy being stripped of status and striving is often where true faith beginsWhat it means to be seen, sustained, and sent—even when you feel invisibleA reminder that provision may already be near—you just need God to open your eyes to see it

Escape to the edge of wilderness luxury in this eye-opening conversation with Rick Dolishny, who alongside partner Jenn Carr has created Ontario's most innovative glamping experience at Maynooth Station Lodge. Rick shares the fascinating journey of bringing North America's only double-paned glass panoramic geodesic dome to life near Algonquin Park. This isn't just camping with better amenities—it's a revolutionary approach to wilderness tourism where modern comforts meet forest immersion. The dome features air conditioning, gigabit internet, a private hot tub for stargazing, and yes, a proper flush toilet that even the most luxury-minded travelers appreciate. What makes this story particularly compelling is how quickly Maynooth Station Lodge found success. Despite regulatory hurdles with Ontario's building codes that weren't designed for round structures, Rick and Jenn persevered. Now, just weeks after opening, they're completely booked through October, attracting urban professionals from Toronto and international travelers from as far as Germany. Their contactless check-in model perfectly matches what younger travelers are actively seeking—privacy, independence, and seamless technology integration in a natural setting.Beyond the dome itself, Rick has woven together a network of local adventure experiences—from UTV tours to whitewater rafting—creating a comprehensive wilderness getaway that benefits the entire Maynooth community. Local businesses report dramatic increases in visitors, with travelers arriving in everything from family minivans to white Porsche convertibles.Whether you're dreaming of your own glamping getaway or considering entering the outdoor hospitality business yourself, this episode offers invaluable insights into the future of tourism.

What do we do when we’re walking through spiritual wilderness—those dry, difficult seasons that test our faith and strip us of comfort? In this moving devotional, Megan J. Conner invites us to consider what it means to build altars in the wilderness—not as monuments to our victories, but as places of sacrifice, surrender, and transformation. Drawing from Genesis 22 and the powerful story of Abraham and Isaac, this episode explores the sacred difference between memorials and altars, and how God uses wilderness moments to draw us deeper into trust, humility, and full dependence on Him. If you’re feeling lost, weary, or stretched beyond your limits, this is a tender reminder that God meets us in the wilderness, and often calls us to lay down what’s most precious so that new life can rise. Highlights (What You’ll Learn) The distinction between biblical monuments and altars, and why it matters for your faith What Abraham’s altar moment teaches us about deep surrender and costly obedience How spiritual “wilderness” seasons are often invitations to intimacy and transformation Why humility and sacrifice are central themes of the Christian journey Encouragement that what you lay down in obedience, God often raises up in new life
Summary:This week on Spirit of Truth Podcast we step into one of the most mysterious Torah portions—Chukat—where life and death collide in the wilderness. From the ashes of the Red Heifer to the death of Miriam, from Moses striking the rock to the bronze serpent lifted high, every moment points us to Yeshua the Messiah. In this episode, Melissa unpacks how God brings purity through death, blessing through surrender, and healing through facing what we fear most. What looks like paradox is actually prophecy—inviting us to stand, watch, and believe. Even in our own battles with loss, sickness, and uncertainty, the lesson is the same: don't look back, don't give in to fear—look up and live.
In this deeply personal episode, I open up about what it's looked like to step away from striving and surrender to a slower, more sacred pace of life. After years of building a new age business, working as a paralegal, navigating deep grief, and trying to make sense of it all, I've found myself in a wilderness season. And instead of resisting it, I'm learning to receive it.If you're burned out, soul-weary, or unsure of your place in this season—you're not alone. This episode is for the woman who's quietly unraveling, not because she's failed, but because she's being refined. In this episode, I share:What led me to step away from social media and release the pressure to performWhy the wilderness isn't punishment—it's preparationThe harm of spiritual bypassing and the healing that happens when we stop pretendingHow God is present in the quiet places where the world no longer applauds you

We're back with Season 16, with episode two of the Blue Liner's Bible. This one is all about finding the right water. We mean this in two different ways. First, you need to find a small stream that has public access (or you have private permission). But the stream also needs cold water and a good population of trout (hopefully they're wild trout). That's the first thing — find a good stream to fish. And honestly, that may not be as easy as it sounds. If you do start to explore new territory and get into the small stream game, you'll quickly understand what we mean, first hand, when we say that the exploration is part of the reward. The failure to find good water on one trip makes the next trip, where you find what becomes one of your favorite places in the world, even more specialSo we'll talk about that tonight — how to choose your next adventure. Identifying primary and secondary water, and kind of how to balance that risk vs reward.Meaning, you could fish the small stream that everyone talks about in Montana or Pennsylvania, because you can be sure that trout are present in good numbers. But would you rather take the chance on the stream that no one mentions? It has all the variables you're looking for in your research, and because it has no name, you can be sure no one else will be thereUnderstanding those variables and knowing good sources for research is part of our topic here tonight. And then, the other part of finding good water is from an on-stream perspective. Once you're there, what section should you choose? And even within that section, what water types should you target the most? Do you expect trout in the deep pools or the riffles, in the fast water, or the slow, shady, deep undercuts?A lot goes into these choices as well. Much of it is seasonal. Some of it is about matching your tactics and your fly choices, and another part is just experience and instinct. Again, all of this stuff is why we love small stream fishing.None of it is laid out for you. A good fly shop will not lead you to these places. And even a good friend, with the best intentions, may not have even half the intel that you really need for a good day of small stream fishing. Like we said last time, the small stream game is do-it-yourself in nature. So, that's what we have lined up. My friend, Austin Dando, joins me for a good look at finding the right small stream water.ResourcesREAD: Troutbitten | Category | Small Stream FishingREAD: Troutbitten | Tag | Small Stream FishingPODCAST: Troutbitten | What to Love About Small Stream Fishing - S7,Ep6VIDEO: Troutbitten | Home WatersVisitTroutbitten WebsiteTroutbitten InstagramTroutbitten YouTubeTroutbitten FacebookThanks to TroutRoutes:Use the code TROUTBITTEN for 20% off your membership athttps://maps.troutroutes.com Thanks to SkwalaUse the code, TROUTBITTEN10 for 10% off your order athttps://skwalafishing.com/
Description: What happens when the faith you were raised with no longer fits? Join us as we explore faith deconstruction and what it looks like to hold on to what matters while letting go of harmful narratives. Our guest, Mary Katherine Backstrom, knows this journey well. Once rooted in evangelical certainty, her world began to unravel—her marriage, career, and faith all shaken. In her raw and hilarious memoir, Not That Wheel Jesus, MK shares what it was like to question everything, wrestle with purity culture's impact, and walk through the grief of lost certainties. As she puts it: “I walked through the rubble, I danced in the fire pits with my friends, and I've emerged into this quiet post-apocalyptic space where I can hear my own voice.” Whether you're navigating your own faith shift or just curious, this conversation will resonate. And don't forget—you can leave us your thoughts at jenhatmaker.com/podcast! Thought-provoking Quotes: “Everybody I speak to that's been on a growth journey of any sort—spiritual, emotional, whatever—you get to a point where you realize that confidence comes from not knowing everything and being at peace with what you can't figure out.” – MK Backstrom “It felt like I was looking at my life and feeling like there's so much loss here, especially my sexuality. My church robbed me of joy. And that's the opposite of what was promised. Once I realized I participated in that behavior, I was able to make amends.” – MK Backstrom “When I walk into that [church] space, it feels like going into a home where a child experienced abuse. I don't know that that's going to leave my body for a very long time. And it doesn't mean that I'm never gonna go back, but I also listen to myself better now and I'm not going to go somewhere where my body feels like it's on fire.” – MK Backstrom “My body is still responding to everything it's experienced for 40 years in the church. And I'm finally getting to the place where I'm starting to understand what my baseline feels like.” – MK Backstrom “If there is a God worth worshiping and there's a life worth living, those things can stand up to your big questions. No God is so fragile that your human curiosity is going to break this to pieces. No problem is so big in your life that you're not gonna get up and keep moving. There's a lot of freedom after the fear. Trust the process, ask questions.” – MK Backstrom Resources Mentioned in This Episode: Holy Hot Mess: Finding God in the Details of this Weird and Wonderful Life by Mary Katherine Backstrom - https://amzn.to/3ZV5GAi Not That Wheel, Jesus!: Stories From a Faith That Went Off-Road in the Best (and Worst) Possible Ways by Mary Katherine Backstrom - https://amzn.to/45KbY9v Rachel Held Evans - https://rachelheldevans.com/ Searching for Sunday: Loving, Leaving, and Finding the Church by Rachel Held Evans - https://amzn.to/4lxKkRY Dallas Willard - https://dwillard.org/ Sarah Bessey - https://www.sarahbessey.com/ Sex MeCourse - https://shop.jenhatmaker.com/products/sex-101 Dr. Celeste Holbrook - https://www.drcelesteholbrook.com/ Guest's Links: Website - https://www.mkbackstrom.com/ Twitter - https://x.com/mkbackstrom Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/MKBackstrom TikTok - https://www.tiktok.com/@marykatherinebackstrom Substack - https://marykatherinebackstrom.substack.com/ Connect with Jen!Jen's Website - https://jenhatmaker.com/ Jen's Instagram - https://instagram.com/jenhatmakerJen's Twitter - https://twitter.com/jenHatmaker/ Jen's Facebook - https://facebook.com/jenhatmakerJen's YouTube - https://www.youtube.com/user/JenHatmaker The For the Love Podcast is presented by Audacy.
