Glow-worms are beetles that live in gardens, hedgerows, and heathlands. Emitting a bright green light at night, the females climb up plant stems and glow in order to attract males, who have large eyes sensitive to that type of light. Zoologists, though, say the glare of white, artificial lights is putting the females in the comparative shade. In order to verify their suspicions, the researchers did a little test – placing male glow-worms in an LED-lit, Y-shaped maze, they gradually made the lights there brighter until the males could no longer find a decoy female. The glow-worms, they believe, were unable to move towards the decoy because they were dazzled. The spread of bright lights, then, could have devastating consequences for glow-worm populations around the world. And some studies suggest they're disappearing altogether. And a widespread decline in insects could have serious consequences for agriculture and the ecosystems that depend upon those insects.
COVID-19 cases are on the rise in New York City and officials are asking people to consider masking back up in crowded settings. Also, WNYC's Matt Katz reports on whether the federal government will indeed take over the beleaguered Rikers Island jail. And, if you've noticed more fireflies this season, you're not alone. Zoologists have noticed too and they're trying to figure out if there's an increase in local population. Lastly, WNYC's Jessica Gould and Sean Carlson discuss what New York City's summer camps are doing to keep kids cool during yet another heat wave.
There was a time when we didn't have any digital skills. But today, our digital businesses gives us the time freedom and financial independence we want. How did we do that for ourselves, even though we started as Zoologists and knew nothing about technology or business?More importantly, how did we achieve financial independence without sacrificing our health, our marriage or our kids? That's what we want to share with you today so you can do the same.Tune in to hear:Why we transitioned from being studying animals to studying businesses. How we actually met and the first business we started together. What Matt's granddad gave him that led to his first business venture. The power of this 9-letter word and how we use it to design & achieve our dream life. How we balance life, marriage and business as a couple for 30 years, even though we are together 24/7.The 2 things Matt learned about becoming rich that you can start doing today. For more information, register for our upcoming free masterclass to learn how to buy websites for income and assets or visit: https://www.ebusinessinstitute.com.au/dip
2023 was the hottest year on record, at 1.48 degrees Celsius above preindustrial levels. That's just below the 1.5 C increase that the UN says is the limit to avoid the worst impacts of climate change. As the summer of 2024 approaches in the Northern Hemisphere, climate scientists are raising the alarm on dangerous impacts of ongoing heat waves. Also Shell's flagship carbon capture and storage project in Canada generated millions of dollars in carbon credits based on greenhouse gas emission reductions that never took place. According to a study by Greenpeace Canada, the scheme was part of Shell's billion-dollar Quest carbon capture project. While these phantom credits were legal from 2015 to 2021 under approved carbon tax rules, Shell's actions raise questions about carbon capture practices in Canada's lucrative fossil fuel industry. And a paper published in the journal Scientific Reports describes the case study of an orangutan who treated and healed his own wound. Zoologists have long seen behaviors of self-medicating in the animal kingdom, but until now it has rarely if ever been documented in scientific literature. — We rely on support from listeners like you to keep our journalism strong. https://www.youtube.com/@grizzlyisonthehunt/streams Thursday at 2:00 PM EST! Grizzly and Derry from the well known band EMF Founder brings you their next episode from 'Unbelievable' From The UK and Beyond! Derry explains their encounters and their history in the UK and Beyond Regarding Mystical Creatures and Cryptids that lurk within their Countryside. Come in and watch this show! We will see you there! Anyone with an interest in cryptozoology - the investigation and study of mystery animals - will find more than enough to interest them wherever they travel in Britain. Dr. Karl Shuker is a zoologist who is internationally recognized as a world expert in cryptozoology (the scientific investigation of mystery animals whose existence or identity has yet to be formally ascertained), as well as in animal mythology and allied subjects relating to wildlife anomalies. For decades, sightings of big black panther-like or brown puma-like cats have been filed all over Britain, but the most famous is the Beast of Exmoor. Reported since the early 1980s in the huge moorland overlapping Devon and Somerset, it has been blamed for many sheep kills. Similar West Country-based reports also have been filed from Dartmoor and Bodmin, but if there are big cats that escaped or were released from captivity, they continue to elude capture. These wild and beautiful locations are well worth a visit. Since the 1970s, the woods surrounding the old church in the Cornish village of Mawnan have been the scene of several alleged sightings of a bizarre feathered flying entity nicknamed the Owlman. Although it resembles an owl, it is as tall as a man and stands upright. Zoologists speculate that it may be an escaped European eagle-owl, but eyewitnesses have discounted this. It is a dark, mysterious, and eerie place. Ground squirrels live in numerous colonies in Slovakia. They are most widespread around the Bratislava airport. However, their numbers have been declining rapidly over the years. Gophers are now considered to be an endangered species. Zoologists have to set up rescue operations. The mown grass areas near the commercial buildings provide a good habitat for these animals. An estimated 700-900 ground squirrels live in one area near Bratislava Airport. This is the site where construction is to take place in winter. New tips for your trips around Slovakia also in today's show

In this very belated episode, we are talking about jellyfish that can live forever (in theory), lobsters that can only survive until the crushing pressure of existence finally gets to them. We also discuss getting your favourite brogues resoled in the cobbler factory to stop your DNA breaking down and how 5000-year-old trees could potentially be considered youthful. Dr. Michael Dickinson is the Esther M. and Abe M. Zarem Professor of Bioengineering at the California Institute of Technology. His work focuses on the biomechanics and the biophysics of life with a particular focus on how animals fly. He looks at these questions through a neuroscientific lens, trying to understand behavior and flight control. In addition to being an excellent scientist, Michael is quite the enthusiastic musician. He played guitar for many years, and has been strumming on the ukulele for about 10 years as well. Much of his free time is spent gardening native plants and enjoying the company of his family. He received his PhD in Zoology from the University of Washington and afterwards worked briefly at the Max Planck Institute for Biological Cybernetics in Tübingen, Germany. Michael has received numerous awards and honors during his career, including the Larry Sandler Award from the Genetics Society of America, the Bartholemew Award for Comparative Physiology from the American Society of Zoologists, a Packard Foundation Fellowship in Science and Engineering, a MacArthur Foundation Fellowship, and the Quantrell award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching from the University of Chicago. He is also a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. Michael shares more about his journey through life and science in this interview.

Hi! Nate from Give Bats A Break here. When you accidentally go viral for @-ing the Pope on Twitter to correct his bad take on bats and are subsequently adopted into the global bat community, you start a podcast. At least that's what I'm doing. Ecologists. Zoologists. Biologists. Conservationists. Rehabilitators. Carers. Advocates. Bat people are probably seen less than bats, so I'm changing that by talking to them about what they do and why they do it! Give Bats A Podcast launches on October 1, 2021 on YouTube and on Anchor.fm, Spotify, Apple iTunes, and more! You can find me on Twitter: https://twitter.com/givebatsabreak
There's a lot of what we know from Earth that can teach us what to expect from extraterrestrials in the future. In this week's episode, Zoologist, Dr Arik Kershenbaum joins comedian Will Preston to discuss insights from Arik's book 'A Zoologists Guide to The Galaxy: What Animals on Earth Reveal about Aliens' which has won praise from high places, including Richard Dawkins. In this episode we cover common expectations, what alien mating might be like, what drives human evolution and the best and worst depictions of aliens in popular culture. Expert guest: Dr Arik Kershenbaum is a zoologist, College Lecturer, and Fellow at Girton College, University of Cambridge. He has researched animal vocal communication for the past ten years in Europe, Israel and the United States and has published more than twenty academic publications on the topic. Here's some data, courtesy of the Secretum Secretorum Substack:
Zoologists have deeply studied numerous ape societies to draw parallels between their behavior in comparison to humans'. We'll be interested in the following ape societies: chimpanzees and bonobos. The first are patriarchal, while the second are female dominated. While there is nothing wrong with any of those models, it is important to point out the contrasting factors of both when compared. The amount of resources, free time and specific interests of each tribe will dictate their behavior, and all of these are closely connected to our own behaviors as humans. Are female-driven human tribes able to persist and survive over time? The answer is “no.” Eventually, a group of strong men will invade and dominate them. As long as men exist, there will be war, and today, war is much needed to bring the strong men back. We are on the verge of bouncing back to hard times, as history dictates the closure of yet another cycle. We are about to witness a violent war between strong men, and we must stay on the victorious side.
Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for May 19, 2021 is: rictus RIK-tus noun 1 : the gape of a bird's mouth 2 a : the mouth orifice b : a gaping grin or grimace Examples: "You could make a strong case that the current face of the Mariners' franchise, generically speaking, is frozen in a rictus of frustration.… Perhaps one day soon a savior will emerge and lead the Mariners to unachieved heights." — Larry Stone, The Seattle Times, 31 Mar. 2021 "To [Jim Carrey] fans, it's fun to watch him return to sketch comedy—the medium that offered his big break back in the early ’90s—turn that rubber face into a rictus, and wiggle his glued-on eyebrows." — Alison Herman, The Ringer, 9 Oct. 2020 Did you know? Rictus began its English career in the late 17th century as a technical term for the mouth of an animal, the new science of zoology clearly calling for some Latin to set its lingo apart from the language of farmers. In Latin, rictus means "an open mouth"; it comes from the verb ringi, meaning "to open the mouth." Zoologists couldn't keep the word to themselves, though. English speakers liked its sound too much, and they thought it would be good for referring to a gaping grin or grimace. James Joyce used the word in both Ulysses (1922) and A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man (1916), writing in the latter, "Creatures were in the field…. Goatish creatures with human faces…. A rictus of cruel malignity lit up greyly their old bony faces."
Are you an animal lover? Have a soft spot for the furry creatures of the forest or the brilliant feathered friends above? Today, Animals, Family, and Photos with Award-Winning Wild Life Photographer and Artist, Holly Cannon.Do you know the three basic distinctions which make up the foundation for any worldview which is considered Christian? They are all found in the first chapter of the first book in the Bible: Genesis one. #1 There is a distinction between God and creation. There is a fundamental difference between the two and if you get that confused, everything else turns into a mess. In the beginning God. Not in the beginning God and. God didn’t check in with me, or you, when He decided to start this world as much as we might like to believe otherwise.#2 There is a distinction between human beings and all other creatures. Being in the image of God is something uniquely reserved for mankind. God gives man the special responsibility to rule over all the creatures of this world. Its part of the job description we have as humans. Interesting, huh? #3. Man is distinct from woman. God made man; male and female he created them. It doesn’t matter how confusing the use of language or pronouns are, a man isn’t a woman and vice versa no matter how confusing we might try to make that.Three fundamental distinctions are worthy to consult when things get confusing in this life. Today we are going to talk a bit more about one of them which all too often gets overlooked. What about all those other creatures which God put on this earth the do their thing? If God put them there, I bet they can teach us something about Him, even if they aren’t in His image like us humans are. How are we to rule over them if we don’t know them, study them, and enjoy God’s creation?Ever consider that the first job God gave man? It is common to say prostitution is the oldest profession. So, it's something we've all wondered at some point or another; what are animals thinking, and can they talk to each other, or more importantly can our pets understand us? In this episode we are talking about language and how humans came to have such complicated ways of communicating. Are we the only ones who are able to talk to each other and pass information between individuals without having to physically demonstrate everything? You'll have to listen on to find out. As usual our tangents have also reached new heights probably getting to their most… interesting in this episode with the standard unit for deer height being set as bananas of all things. We're back with another episode this time with our first listener question; why don't electric eels electrocute themselves? We go back to the basics of how animals use electricity and how the electric eels crazy powerful shock is generated and then talk about an interesting case study with Sparky the eel who we all agree was very aptly named. You'll have to listen in to find out more and maybe even hear why electric eels just might be aquatic Jedi. The preview episode of the new podcast series 3 Zoologists and a Microphone takes on an incredibly important question that we know you've all been waiting to hear the answer too. Are Zebras white with black stripes or black with white stripes? Taking on this question we cover some other interesting topics like, should humans have stripy legs too and take their fashion ideas from Zebras and Okapis, as well as how night-time on the Serengeti can leave you within feet of a zebra without you even knowing it. Frogs have hopped around this planet for 200 million years. In comparison, anatomically modern humans have only been around for 200 thousand years. But the last half century has seen a tragic loss in amphibian biodiversity around the world. It seems especially striking that a group of animals that predate the dinosaurs have been devastated by modern human activities. With us today to discuss the history of discoveries in the area of amphibian declines is David Wake. David graduated from Pacific Lutheran College in 1958, and received M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Southern California in 1960 and 1964. He then taught at the University of Chicago before joining the faculty at the University of California, Berkeley in 1969. At Berkeley, David served as curator of herpetology and Director of the Museum of Vertebrate Zoology. He also served as President of the Society for the Study of Evolution, the American Society of Naturalists, and the American Society of Zoologists. In 1998, David was elected into the National Academy of Sciences.

«How stupid not to have thought about that!» skal angivelig Darwins venn Thomas Huxley (1825-1895) ha sagt når han hadde lest On the Origin of the Species fra 1859. «I feel not a shade of surprise at your entirely rejecting my views: my surprise is that I have been successful in converting some few eminent Botanists, Zoologists, & Geologists. In several cases the conversion has been very slow & that is the only sort of conversion which I respect.» Dr Fergus Keeling and Dr John Ruthven are Zoologists and lifelong friends since they worked together at the BBC's Natural History Unit nearly 30 years ago. In this - the first podcast of a new series - Fergus and John discuss how and when dogs became our friends, how a sheepdog called 'Chaser' can remember over a thousand objects, and how to get in to the minds of dogs (and possibly their owners). Fergus also remembers his beloved labrador 'Peanut' and how she came to have a BBC staff pass!
Adam Rutherford talks to astronomer Tabetha Boyajian at Louisiana State University about the wierd star that's perplexed astronomers since its discovery two years ago. KIC 8462852 has the unique habit of intermittently and sometimes dramatically dimming and then brightening. Some scientists even suggested vast alien megastructures around the star might be the explanation. After twenty months of almost continuous observation, Professor Boyajian has much more information about what the star is doing. But the big mystery hasn't gone away. BBC News science correspondent Jonathan Amos joins Adam to share some highlights in space exploration for the coming 12 months. Zoologists and engineers at the University of Oxford are developing an app that identifies one species of mosquito from another by analysing the sounds their rapid wing beats make. Graihagh Jackson visits Marianne Sinka at the Zoology Department to listen to her collection of mosquito songs. Did the widespread introduction of the food additive trehalose fuel the emergence of epidemics of virulent Clostridium difficile in hospitals from the early 2000s? Microbiologist Robert Britton tells Adam about the evidence his team has gathered and published this week in the journal 'Nature'.
