Listen to this episode for ways to save money while supporting your values! Co-hosts Tania and Adriana share what companies they boycott and why, and which alternative companies have ethical practices they support. Many of the companies on our boycott lists have documented labor rights violations or support governments rooted in white supremacy and oppressive systems. Boycotting large corporations has opened new ways for us to reconnect with our local communities such as through mutual aid. It's also a great excuse to find new small family-owned businesses to support. Boycotting is a great technique that has worked for many movements in the past, and it's a great way to hold companies accountable for their practices.Remember: the companies you choose to support should hold your values for community care and equal rights.Resources:Boycott List by BDS MovementBoycott List by Ethical ConsumerAnti-DEI Boycott ListWhy to boycott Chiquita and DoleWhy to boycott NestleAlternative Brands by Ethical Consumer15 Ethical & Sustainable Brands by Sustainably ChicBuyNothingListen to our previous episode “Activism, But Make It Fashionable” for clothing brands we don't and do supportVictory! In this special episode, filmmaker and contemporary artist Alia Syed joins EMPIRE LINES live, to weave together their works in moving image, photography, and oral history, and reflect on personal experiences of migration in South Asian diasporic communities in 1960s–1970s Glasgow, through their ongoing film series, The Dhaba (2025).Drawing inspiration from the tale of St. Mungo - the patron saint and founder of Glasgow - Alia Syed's exhibition, The Ring in the Fish, is an intimate exploration of memory, cultural transmission, and identity in Scotland. In The Dhaba (2025), Alia gleans stories from a series of interviews she initiated with members of the South Asian community, exposing absences in official narratives and archives, and illuminating histories in the spaces between national identities, race, gender, and diaspora. With this new, experimental, 16mm film work, Alia explores the role of imagination in migration, and how images carried across multiple generations of migrants from India and Pakistan can create new landscapes and enable new ways of being.Alia details her relationships with ‘the second city of Empire', Swansea in Wales, and London, including her long-term creative relationship with Gilane Tawadros, her formative work, Fatima's Letter (1992), filmed at Whitechapel Underground Station, and shortlisting for the Film London Jarman Award (2018). From her current work with curator Shalmali Shetty, we discuss her many intergenerational collaborations, and relations to artist women including Jasleen Kaur, who shares Alia's experiences of ‘monocultures' in Glasgow. Alia shares the importance of audio, literature, language, and translation, in her work with film and moving image.Plus, we consider political solidarity through her life and practice, from her father's activism and connections to Yasser Arafat, to the present. Alia reflects on the CCA Glasgow as an institution – one that she recalls having occupied as a teenager, when it was known as the Third Eye Centre - including the Board's ambiguous statements around endorsing PACBI (The Palestinian Campaign for the Academic and Cultural Boycott of Israel) and BDS (Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions), and response to Art Workers for Palestine Scotland's programme to Reclaim the CCA in June 2025.This episode was recorded live as part of the public programme for Alia Syed: The Ring in the Fish, an exhibition at CCA Glasgow, in June 2025. The exhibition was originally scheduled to continue until 26 July 2025.
Host Gary J. Ross discusses BDS (Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions) and its relation to private equity and venture capital with Anat Alon-Beck, associate professor at Case Western Reserve University School of Law. Gary and Prof. Alon-Beck discuss the BDS movement and its goal of applying economic and political pressure on Israel and any company doing business with Israel. Prof. Alon-Beck highlights the reputational and financial risks to companies in all fields, including technology, defense, and academia, the latter evidenced in protests demanding universities withdraw funds from companies with business ties to Israel.

On this edition of Parallax Views, Israel has commenced its operation in Rafah. As this was happening I was interviewing Khalil Sayegh, a D.C.-based Palestinian Christian who was born and raised in the Gaza Strip. Khalil is also the co-founder and President of the Agora Initiative, a non-profit that works to promote democracy in the Middle East. Khalil gives a crash course in the Palestinian perspective on Israle/Palestine in the course of our conversation starting with a discussion of his own background and experiences as a Palestinian who grew up in Gaza. We also end up discussing issues related to how the Palestinian cause, the quest for Palestinian self-determination, can advance forward in these turbulent, uncertain, and grim time of war and bombardment. Among the topics covered are: the need for external pressure to be put on Israel, Israeli obstinance on a two-state solution, Hamas, the Palestinian Authority, Marwan Barghouti, Zionism and anti-Zionism, diplomacy, the Occupation, the West Bank, the shrinking Israeli left, Benjamin Netanyahu, the problem with thinking that a figure succeeding Netanyahu such as Yair Lapid or Benny Gantz will immediately lead to optimal outcomes, the BDS (Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions) movement, the Nakba and Palestinian displacement, Israeli maximalism, and much, much more!
Last fall, the Contemporary Jewish Museum in San Francisco put out an open call for artists to apply for the California Jewish Open. Some of the artists that were accepted into the show identified themselves openly in the application as anti-Zionist, and submitted work that contained content that straightforwardly advocated for Palestinian liberation. But in April, seven of the artists withdrew from the show. A statement released by a group calling themselves California Artists for Palestine cited an “inability to meet artists' demands, including transparency around funding and a commitment to BDS [Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions].” The artists demanded to be able to have final say on wall text about the works, and to be able to pull or alter their works at any time. They were also concerned about potential “curatorial both-sidesism,” referring to an email they received on March 22nd which asked artists to sign off on the fact that their work would be “presented in proximity to artwork(s) by other Jewish artists which may convey views and beliefs that conflict with [their] own.” The museum has decided to leave blank the wall space designated for this work, “to honor the perspective that would have been shared through these works, and to authentically reflect the struggle for dialogue that is illustrated by the artists' decisions to withdraw.”This week, Jewish Currents editor-in-chief Arielle Angel speaks to two anti-Zionist multidisciplinary artists who made divergent decisions about whether to stay in the group show: Amy Trachtenberg, who opted to remain, and Liat Berdugo, who has pulled out. The trio discuss the perils and possibility of Jewish institutional life—in the art world and beyond—at this moment, the applicability of BDS in this case, and the uses and limitations of “dialogue.”Thanks to Jesse Brenneman for producing and to Nathan Salsburg for the use of his song “VIII (All That Were Calculated Have Passed).” ARTICLES MENTIONED AND FURTHER READING: “Jewish Anti-Zionist Artists Withdraw From Contemporary Jewish Museum Show,” Matt Stromberg, Hyperallergic“Anti-Zionist Jewish artists pull out of CJM exhibit when demands are not met,” Andrew Esensten, J Weekly“CJM visitors wonder: Does the Palestinian flag belong on the museum's walls?,” Andrew Esensten, J WeeklyPalestinian Campaign for the Academic and Cultural Boycott of Israel (PACBI) guidelines“Campus Politics Takes the Stage in The Ally,” On the Nose, Jewish CurrentsJewish Voice for Peace/IfNotNow Passover Campaign“Biting the Hand,” The Editors, e-flux“

Ahmed came on the show to talk about UniMelb 4 Palestine and recent solidarity actions on campus.// From our 12 October 2023 show: We hear the first instalment of a three part conversation between Spike and "James" an activist from Blockade Australia. Blockade Australia is an organising network established in response to the destruction of the ecosystems that support all human and non-human life. On this edition of Parallax Views, Shaul Magid, author of Meir Kahane: The Public Life and Political Thought of an American Jewish Radical, returns to discuss his latest book, The Necessity of Exile: Essays from a Distance. In said series of essays Shaul explores Jewish identity, Israel, Zionism, anti-Zionism, Jewish intellectual history, and more from a provocative but thought-provoking manner that even manages to delve into his own intellectual evolution going back to his youthful involvement in Israeli counterculture. At much of the core of the book are the questions: "Has Zionism exhausted itself?" and what exactly is the importance of Exile in Jewish culture and thought. We'll also delve into the BDS (Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions) movements and the Jewish community's response to it, Shaul's critique of liberal Zionism, the idea of "counter-Zionism", the Gaza war and the October 7th Hamas attack, settler-colonialism and Shaul's critique of pro-Israel voices using the rhetoric of "freeing Palestinians from Hamas" since the war began, and much, much more.

This is an intensification of the long-standing israeli siege of the area amidst over 75 years of colonial occupation. This has effectively cut Gaza off from the rest of the world, and is a further example of the lengths that the colonial power will go to ensure that Palestinians cannot communicate with each other. Why would United States Senators sign into law, a bill that combats the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanction (BDS) movement this past May 2023? Probably because BDS works. What is it and why does it matter so much to our lawmakers and to all Americans? While we find out, let's ask ourselves, “Why do we consider Rosa Parks a momshero?”States led the way in passing anti BDS laws, and have been doing so for years. Returning to the podcast is Bahia Amawi, a mom who was scheduled WAY BEFORE October to speak with us. This episode was recorded just after October 7th and since then, the world is witnessing what's happened.Bahia Amawi lost her job overnight when she refused to sign an employment contract with a school district that stipulated she would maintain an anti BDS stance. Today, Dr. Bob Welcomes Former Israeli Defense Force (IDF) Combat Officer, and the Founder and CEO of Ad Kan, Gilad Ach. Gilad served 6 years in the IDF and led several special forces operations. He now runs the whistleblower organization Ad Kan, which helps combat dangerous misinformation campaigns against Israel and the IDF. The name “Ad Kan”, or “It Stops Now” is used to refer to the activities by anti-Zionist groups against the State of Israel, that they must “stop now”. Ad Kan utilizes their espionage, research, and law divisions, as well as the media to deter these anti-Zionist and pro BDS (Boycott, Divest and Sanction of Israel) groups. The organization has been successful in executing hundreds of spy missions against these organizations and other groups in order to uncover their harmful and illicit activities.

Do you know what the word dox means—d-o-x? I had never heard of the word before this week. I learned its meaning as our community has encountered something you might have heard of, a website called The Mapping Project of BDS (Boycott, Divestment, Sanction) Boston. The dictionary definition of dox is to publish private or identifying information about a person or organization on the internet with malicious intent. BDS Boston engages in a massive doxing of both Jewish institutions and individuals, including many who are members of our own community. It lists names and addresses of institutions and individuals, while the people responsible for this website refuse to identify themselves. BDS Boston is ostensibly about Israel and Palestinians. But in fact it does not discuss Israel. Does not discuss Palestinians. BDS Boston is about us, the Jews of Boston. They are not after Israel. They are after us. Cloaking themselves in anonymity, they pursue a double agenda.
While over the decades, the Israeli-Palestinian conflict has periodically been front page news in America, for the most part, the issue has not taken center stage in U.S. politics. But what if it turned out that, unbeknownst to the vast majority of Americans, state legislatures throughout the country have been approving bills that not only took a stand on the conflict, but actually penalized some Americans for expressing an opinion on the issue? In her revelatory and thoroughly gripping documentary “Boycott”, director Julia Bacha has uncovered a widespread and deeply disturbing effort over the last several years to punish individuals or companies that support the BDS (Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions) Movement against Israel — or even refuse to sign an oath stating that they have not participated in any such boycotts. Ken sat down with Julia to find out more about this vastly under-reported and troubling story and to hear about the creative challenges involved in reaching audiences that may not have heard much — or anything — about the issue. What drew her to the three central characters in the film and their uphill legal challenges to the law? How did she react, when, suddenly, out of the blue, she ran into an Arkansas state senator who had some surprising revelations to share about his vote on the state's anti-BDS measure? How did Julia connect the dots between the Israeli government, the U.S. Christian fundamentalist movement and the Democratic and Republican Parties? As the facts pile up and the revelations keep coming, it becomes clear that the issues raised by “Boycott” are sure to make us stand up and pay attention. Nothing less than the First Amendment is at stake. Our Top Docs conversation with Julia Bacha is part of our partnership with the Minneapolis St. Paul International Film Festival (May 5 – 19, 2022) to spotlight the more than 40 documentary feature films screening at this year's festival. Information about the “Boycott” screenings at the Minneapolis St. Paul International Film Festival: “Boycott” screens in-person at The MSP Film at The Main Theatre in Minneapolis: Wednesday, May 18, 6:30 PM CT, The Main 2 Thursday, May 19, 12:30 PM CT, The Main 2 Julia Bacha will be attending both screenings. For residents of Minnesota only, the film also can be screened virtually during the Festival. More information about the screenings can be found here. Hidden Gem: Elena
Mayor Gabriel Groisman of Bal Harbour, Florida, is Partner at LSN Partners, and a tireless advocate for strengthening the US-Israel partnership and expanding the Abraham Accords. Mayor Groisman joins America's Roundtable Radio co-hosts Natasha Srdoc and Joel Anand Samy for a conversation about principled pro-growth policies advanced by Florida's elected officials, business leaders and engaged stakeholders, and the state's unique approach in addressing the Covid pandemic which have become a model for America. The discussion with Mayor Gabriel Groisman also focuses on the growing concerns of the Biden administration's insistence on closing a deal with Iran, a state sponsor of terrorism, thus handing over to the Iranian regime access to $90 billion dollars in foreign currency reserves and sanctions relief. The program also brings to the forefront urgency to expand the Abraham Accords, a principled policy initiative which is bringing together countries in the Middle East to promote trade and investments, and advancing pro-growth policies for the region. The discussion will also address the rise of anti-Semitism in America and around the world, as well as the BDS (Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions) movement targeting the sovereign state of Israel — which adversely impacts both Arabs and Jews. The Economist, April 2, 2022: What America can learn from Florida's boom "In fact, Florida has become emblematic of much of America and central to all of it. The state is on the rise, as our special report this week explains. Between 2010 and 2020 its population grew at double the national rate. Florida has overtaken New York to become America's third-most-populous state after California and Texas, with a dynamic and diverse demography, including fast-rising numbers of Hispanics. It is now the number-one destination for American and foreign movers." — The Economist Mayor Groisman will also share his insights on Passover, commemorating one of the high-holidays in the Jewish calendar commencing next week. He will invite us to learn more about the timeless principles from the historic events that led to the Israelites gaining their freedom from slavery in ancient Egypt, and their extraordinary journey to the Promised Land — today's Jewish State of Israel. Mayor Gabriel Groisman's Brief Bio Mayor Gabriel Groisman has been serving his community since November 2014, first being elected as a Councilman, and then in November 2016 was elected as the Mayor of Bal Harbour, Florida. He wrote and passed the nation's first municipal anti-BDS ordinance in December 2015 and was the first in the nation to codify a uniform definition of anti-Semitism in December 2017. Groisman's subsequent dealings with a local church who had previously boycotted and divested from Israel is the first documented success story of anti-BDS legislation. He is a sought after public speaker, regularly speaking to groups about fighting anti-semitism and the BDS movement, and related topics. Mayor Groisman has presented on two occasions at the United Nations in New York as a legal scholar on combating unjust and illegal commercial and academic boycotts of Israel, and has also presented at conferences held at the Italian Parliament in Rome, the Israeli Knesset and across the country. Still, Mayor Groisman prides himself in speaking to high school and college-aged students, who are the most directly impacted by the rise of anti-Semitism, always delivering a much needed sense of pride and strength. In his private life, Groisman is also a practicing attorney and government affairs consultant. He is a partner at the prestigious firm of LSN Partners where he focuses on government relations in correlation with the firm's state and national practice. At LSN Gabriel established an International Tech practice, working primarily with Israeli tech companies in various sectors, helping them navigate the world of government procurement and regulatory affairs in the United States. He also often advises on cases around the world related to protecting the Jewish community from discriminatory conduct by governments and private individuals alike. In 2017, Groisman was named as a member of Advisory Council for Israel and Middle East Issues by then-Congressman Ron DeSantis, Chairman of National Security Subcommittee. In 2018, Mayor Groisman was awarded the Pursuit of Justice Award by the prestigious American Association of Jewish Lawyers and Jurists. https://ileaderssummit.org/services/americas-roundtable-radio/ https://ileaderssummit.org/ | https://jerusalemleaderssummit.com/ America's Roundtable on Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/americas-roundtable/id1518878472 Twitter: @GabeGroisman @ileaderssummit @NatashaSrdoc @JoelAnandUSA @supertalk America's Roundtable is co-hosted by Natasha Srdoc and Joel Anand Samy, co-founders of International Leaders Summit and the Jerusalem Leaders Summit. More than 20 acts have boycotted this year's Sydney Festival because of the board's decision to accept a $20,000 donation from the Israeli embassy to stage a dance performance. Liberal MP Dave Sharma says the acts boycotting the Sydney Festival have found themselves in “odd company” after Hamas released a statement in support of the boycott. More than 30 acts have distanced themselves from Sydney Festival in response to an organised boycott campaign, protesting the festival's decision to accept $20,000 in funding from Israel's Australian embassy to support Sydney Dance Company's production of Decadance, by Israeli choreographer Ohad Naharin. Welcome to The Times of Israel's Daily Briefing, your 15-minute audio update on what's happening in Israel, the Middle East, and the Jewish world, from Sunday through Thursday. Today's panel comprises political correspondent Tal Schneider and United States correspondent Jacob Magid, along with host Amanda Borschel-Dan. We again dip into the media meltdown over the recent Ben & Jerry's announcement that it will no longer distribute its politically flavored ice cream in the West Bank after the current Israeli franchise contract is up. Israeli Ambassador to the US Gilad Erdan has tapped over 30 US governors to apply their states' anti-BDS (Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions) legislation and pull state employees' pension funds from Unilever investments. Next, Schneider brings us the last chapter in a curious court case involving the son of former prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Yair. The social media butterfly was accused of slander for statements he posted on his robust Twitter account accusing Wexner fellowship alumni of being part of an alleged Jeffrey Epstein-led "pedophile cult." And finally, we take a deeper look at a disturbing poll that came out of the US last week, which saw a quarter of US Jews believing that Israel is an "apartheid state." Discussed articles include: US states' fully baked anti-BDS laws could put the freeze on Ben & Jerry's Israeli envoy urges 35 US states to activate anti-BDS laws against Ben & Jerry's Yair Netanyahu apologizes to Wexner fellowship alumni for ‘pedophile cult' claim Poll finds a quarter of US Jews think Israel is ‘apartheid state' Subscribe to The Times of Israel Daily Briefing on iTunes, Spotify, PlayerFM, Google Play, or wherever you get your podcasts. anarchy .(2)........ jesus CW: Discussion about sex Spoke with long time activist and friend Daniel about 3 distinct subjects. The first 30 minutes is about being asexual, the importance of having ace (asexual) community and spaces, the A in LGBTQIA doesn't mean "ally", a lack of sexuality is a sexual orientation, breaking out of invisibility, formative adolescent years, oppression olympics, sex in popular culture, "sex-repulsed" identity and the asexuality spectrum, AVEN (Asexuality Visibility and Education Network), overt sexuality in radical spaces and respecting comfort zones, and not being seen as a "real" queer. At 30 minutes in we started talking about his new project Decolonizing Judaism, being atheist but culturally Jewish, separating Jewish identity from the state of Israel as well as protestant colonization, conflating being anti-occupation with antisemitism, Hillel Center campus Zionism, the BDS (Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions) movement, Israeli trauma, the dangerous nature of fear, Palestinian violence, alt-right working with Zionists, and leftist antisemitism. At the hour mark we spoke about anti-statist communism, having the necessary skill sets for revolution, a temporary transitional socialist state, how a communist revolution seems like an anarchist revolution with extra steps, dual power organizing, the threat from external states to a revolution, and how the revolution is training workshops.
