Growing Older with Gusto
The Beauty Of Pilates With Shane K. Rhoads

Growing Older with Gusto

Pilates is the path forward for many people who have been active and are experiencing back and shoulder issues. Shane Rhoads of Movement Med talks to us about his journey and how he became interested in the field of Pilates. This interest fueled his desire to start a business encompassing Pilates and other forms of self-care that help people to "grow older with gusto!" Tune in as he also explores the importance of finding qualified instructors to maximize the benefits of Pilates, especially if you are already a senior. --- Watch the episode here   Listen to the podcast here   The Beauty Of Pilates With Shane K. Rhoads Welcome to Growing Older with Gusto. We have another exciting guest who's growing older with Gusto and helping others to do that too. My personal experience as I'm growing older is the need for Pilates to keep my back in tip-top shape so I can enjoy doing some of the activities I love, like biking, swimming, and playing golf. Our guest is Shane Keith Rhoads. He's a professional trainer who turned his background in education into a Pilates, rehab, and medical exercise studio and a business, which he calls Med Movement. The business that he started in 2017 is unique in that he has created an environment for people to experience Pilates and other types of rehab exercises. He has a lot to share about his evolution, so let's bring him on. Welcome to the show, Shane. Thanks for having me. Getting Into Pilates My pleasure. In talking to you, I know you started in a way that is probably a little bit more unconventional than somebody starting a Pilates studio. Could you talk about how you got into the business of integrating body and mind? I'll go backward to tell you where the first light-up moment is. I've been in fitness for probably over 30 years. I started when I was a sophomore in college at Goodyear Fitness Center and Corporate Fitness. My major was Exercise Physiology and then Sports Medicine, working with athletes. I was an athlete at the time, so I was enamored with working with athletes. In grad school, I was a strength and conditioning coach for college sports teams and an athletic trainer, the guys who take care of injuries and tape ankles.     I had to put a lot of hours in and I had very limited time. I asked them, “Can I count my weight room strength coach hours as sports medicine hours?” They're like, “No, but if you become the last-phase rehab guy in the weight room, we'll count those hours.” I fell in love with working with people in that last transition from injury to full health again. That kept me still in sports. I went into professional baseball after that and had a private business after that. I also did some other things. At some point, I remember reading an article about Pilates. What year was that, would you say? 1989, I was in school. The reason I asked is that I'm hooked on Pilates. I know from talking to people that Pilates has evolved from when Joseph Pilates introduced it to the world, from being classical and helping dancers to being part of a rehab program. I was curious. 1996, 1997, I was looking for some new avenue and I came across an article. As I was saying, Pilates was starting to be in the public eye, but more from celebrities doing it, and it was on TV. I saw this article on rehabilitation in the Pilates setting, Brent Anderson and Polestar Pilates. It clicked. It's like this system and equipment can allow me to do almost everything with someone. It's a long-term longevity-type exercise routine. It's non-impactful. It works on all the mobility and stability you need, and there's a lot of variety. It's something you can do for a lifetime. That appealed to me because I can help rehab people, or help them with their medical conditions and get fit. I can keep doing it until they're 100 years old. We have a client here who's 96. When did that client start doing Pilates? I never asked her. She works with one of the other instructors. It appealed to me in that way.

Inspiring Stories of Older Athletes North of Forty

Every once in a while inspiring stories come across my desk and I'm so excited to share this episode. Author, Lauren Hurst - who calls herself not an author - wrote a book about older athletes sharing their path and performance.. Some of which will blow you away.  I'll link in this episode to a previous episode with the hosts of the Huntington World Games in St George Utah. We've had some amazing examples of athleticism in our lifetime. Yet, too little. We hear of 103 year old runners because there are so few. Yet, we don't think we'll be doing that at 103. Many 52 year olds think they are too old to run any more. It's not necessarily age. And maybe running isn't or wasn't even your sport. But something might be.  This episode is for anyone who needs to hear it's never too late.  Lauren Hurst is the author of North of Forty: Inspiring Stories of Older Athletes. Lauren is a lifelong competitive athlete and independent personal trainer. She has trained clients of all shapes and ability levels from ages 7 to 96, and currently specializes in clients over 60. She holds a BS in Corporate Fitness from Central Connecticut State University. Throughout her athletic career, Lauren has been a competitive tennis player, swimmer, bodybuilder, martial artist, runner, duathlete and triathlete. Questions We Answer in This Episode: You describe yourself as “not an author”, what made you decide to take on this kind of project? Can you share a few of your favorite stories from the book? Having spoken with so many incredible athletes and hearing about their struggles and how they have adapted as they've grown older, has this experience changed the way you think about your own competitive and athletic goals? What did you learn that surprised you? What advice would you give someone reading the book (maybe someone who is older and doesn't think of themselves as athletic!) who's inspired to get more fit? How can they make that happen for themselves? HALO Talks

HALO Talks, on behalf of Integrity Square, is pleased to share this podcast with our new client, HealthFitness Corporation. HealthFitness is committed to further expansion into facilities-based fitness management and has engaged Integrity Square to assist in outreach with prospective owners who are seeking a great home for their company and employees. If you are interested in exploring opportunities after hearing this podcast, please reach out to Rosa Alaimo-Quinn, our Chief of Staff, to arrange an introductory call with our team. (rosa@integritysq.com) Sean McManamy is a key figure in the fitness industry, with a focus on creating communities and a sense of belonging through the management of fitness programs and on-site facilities. He has been with Trustmark, HealthFitness' parent company, since before their acquisition of HealthFitness in 2010. Trustmark is a benefits company that has supported employers and their teams for more than 100 years. Over the past decade, Sean has been instrumental in driving the success of HealthFitness, which now employs over 2,000 associates across the United States. They manage more than 400 sites for approximately 140 clients, primarily in the corporate sector but also serving hospitals, colleges, and municipalities. Despite the challenges faced, including the recent pandemic, Sean's leadership has enabled HealthFitness to thrive in this constantly evolving industry. “The foundation of our business has always been managing onsite fitness programs, and that's still our bread and butter today through a lot of twists and turns, through a little something called a pandemic!” states McManamy. “We love this space, and we're ready to grow and ready to invest to grow.”  Some key moments:  History of location management from staffing to building relationships. April of 2021 HealthFitness acquired Midtown Health, a fitness management provider and subsidiary of Chicago-based Tennis Corporation of America (TCA) leading to a successful onboarding of 400 employees and 100% client retention. Expanded product portfolio, including virtual fitness, gym network and assisted stretching program. Increased communication and employee engagement during COVID. Family businesses prioritize employees and clients. Strong connection between employees and clients. Proud of support provided through benefits, education, and networking. Thinking strategically about build/buy/partner decisions to address emerging client needs  A few key takeaways:  Employers are recognizing the value of direct employee communication. Coordinated and smart communication is essential to compete with other benefits and employer programs. While the corporate fitness and wellness market has not recovered to pre-COVID levels, our clients are increasingly looking to create positive return-to-office experiences with key amenities like the fitness center. One-on-one interactions and building relationships with on-site employees are crucial for engagement. Sitting down and talking directly with employees is the most effective way to do that! Membership at corporate fitness centers has been down from pre-COVID levels, but membership at health system wellness centers has recovered to 100% or higher. Fostering community within companies is a priority for clients. Companies are looking to the fitness center to help them strengthen and foster this sense of community, particularly as employees work on-site, in a hybrid model, or fully virtually. There is a growing demand for better amenities and experiences. Companies are investing more in their office spaces, including larger and better-equipped facilities, and there is competition to attract and retain talent. Companies are seeking more programming and better services in corporate spaces to create a great workplace environment. A company may be well organized, productive, and efficient—and yet, just how it delivers results may remain mysterious, even to those closely involved. How do the kinks get resolved? Where does the information flow? When are employers at their best, and when are they falling short—and why are they falling short? These are the questions Bradley Killinger wished to answer with his startup, Sapience. He calls it “the Fitbit for the knowledge worker.” With an emphasis on ethics and privacy, Sapience monitors thousands of data points on employee workstations and uses AI and machine learning to generate transparent reports, giving management deep insights into where improvements are needed. On this edition of UpTech Report, Bradley talks about his inspiration for Sapience and how he's developed the product in a way that benefits the entire organization.

Powered by WODify, listeners can check out Webb's new platform once live by clicking the link below: Turf.wodify.com Webb worked his way into the fitness world twelve years ago after undergoing his own transformation and losing over 100 lbs in a year. What started as a hobby, became a college job, evolved into a second college degree, and eventually his career. He's trained celebrities, college team players, professional athletes, elite executives, and everyday people. In addition to launching Turf Online Training, Webb, who is committed to lifelong learning, is currently enrolled in a Masters program in Exercise Science and Kinesiology. He also holds two undergraduate degrees, BA in Marketing & Design, a BS in Exercise Science and a Masters Degree in Business Administration, both of which skill sets have allowed Webb to make waves in the 1:1, group fitness, and online training spaces. In fact, when Webb first graduated college, he took a position at Equinox with the thought that it would help him establish a network of professionals needed to pursue a career in Advertising. Clearly, that pivot never occurred. Prior to taking the leap into online training and truly embracing the idea of being his own boss, Webb's fitness career flourished in the corporate world at Equinox. Webb was recognized as an elite trainer in Equinox's top 1% for all 8 years he was employed there, earning back-to-back Fusion Awards in 2013 and 2014. He continuously generated top productivity in both the personal training and group fitness departments, becoming co-creator of 3 signature group fitness classes. He was a 2016 Group Fitness Instructor of the Year Nominee and contributed his knowledge and talent as a Business Educator of Trainers and a Group Fitness Mentor to new instructors. Webb continues to mentor coaches today, and in this episode, you will learn some of Webb's top tips for coaches who are looking to make the leap.
