Despite challenging conditions in financial markets the world over, ambitious entrepreneurs find a way. There are few sectors where that is more true than in agriculture, and despite the industry's reputation for convention and conservatism, challenging times call for creative measures, and farmers are nothing if not creative. To learn more about innovative farm business models and the cutting edge of farm financial strategies, we invited Quint Pottinger, Owner of Affinity Farms in Kentucky, USA. Quint is not only bringing in hedge fund investors, he's selling all his crops– corn, soybeans, wheat, and rye– into specialty markets and finding hefty premiums for doing so, all while improving his local community's sustainability and creating a transformed future food system where his farm will thrive. For more information and resources, visit our website. The information in this post is not investment advice or a recommendation to invest. If you find a message that is consistent over time, through times of ease and times of challenge, and at each challenge in the real world this message is validated, reinforced, and found to be correct — is that a message you need to pay attention to?Since the Houthi joined a second front with the Gazans against Israel by attacking international shipping in the Red Sea and its approaches, the US Navy has led the international response and has been engaged in continuous combat operations facing almost all anti-ship weapons that any navy would expect to face in 2024.The experience in the Red Sea is validating the consistent messages about fleet size and requirements voiced by our guest this week on Midrats — a consistent guest since 2010 — Bryan McGrath, Commander, USN (Ret.).SummaryIn this conversation, Sal, Mark, and Bryan McGrath discuss the ongoing attacks on international shipping in the Red Sea by the Houthis, who are clients of Iran. They also talk about the performance of the US Navy in protecting commercial shipping, the investments made in the Navy, and improvements and challenges in the US Navy. The conversation then shifts to the development of directed energy weapons and the challenges in integrating them into the fleet. They also discuss the importance of multi-mission platforms and the need for single-mission platforms in certain situations. The conversation concludes with a discussion on the presence and deterrence mission of submarines and the need for VLS reload capabilities on DDGs. McGrath highlighted the positive changes in the fleet's material condition and combat systems, as well as the increased investment in training and spare parts. However, he also expressed concerns about the extended deployments and the strain it puts on ships and crews. McGrath emphasized the need for a larger Navy, particularly in terms of aircraft carriers, to meet the demands of global operations. He also discussed the challenges in the shipbuilding industry and the importance of stability and additional shipyards.Sound Bites"It is time to bring systems to see that allow us to economically engage civilizations that can out-produce us""There's been three straight budgets now that have funded spare parts significantly higher than I have seen them since I was in command."Chapters00:00: Introduction02:04: Ongoing Attacks on International Shipping in the Red Sea04:07: Performance of the Fleet in the Red Sea07:10: The Potential of Directed Energy Weapons09:40: Challenges in Integrating New Technology12:14: The Need for More VLS Tubes and Single-Mission Platforms16:13: The Role of Submarines in Naval Power21:53: Deterrence in the South China Sea26:43: Presence and Deterrence with the USS Georgia30:20: Rearming DDGs and the Importance of VLS33:36: Improvements in Shipyards and Material Conditions41:18: The Need for More Aircraft Carriers48:00: The Impact of Extended Deployments54:35: The Importance of Spare Parts58:58: Challenges of the Constellation Class01:00:09: The Importance of Stability and Additional ShipyardsBryan is the founding Managing Director of The FerryBridge Group LLC (FBG), a niche consultancy specializing in naval and national security issues including national and military strategy, strategic planning, executive communications, strategic communications, and emerging technologies. ELECTORAL INFLUENCING OPERATIONS CONTINUE IN THE U.S. -----BEGIN TEARLINE------International Events-Red Sea/HOA: The USS BATAAN and USS CARTER HALL have transited north through the Suez Canal into the Mediterranean Sea, and will reform as a full ARG. As a reminder, these vessels were deployed for counter-piracy operations in the southern Red Sea and Gulf of Aden in direct response to Yemeni targeting. AC: These vessels, while technically not operating as a full ARG, were in effect acting as such over the past few weeks. As the ARG is one of the more flexible unit structures in the military, one of the main standard missions for U.S. Marines onboard these vessels is to provide onboard security teams for merchant vessels passing through high-risk areas, if the situation calls for it. This is a long-standing mission set, and one that even China has routinely employed themselves for over a decade as part of their enduring counter-piracy mission in the Gulf of Aden. The departure of the BATAAN rules this out as a COA for countering the threats in the region. The only security missions provided by the U.S. Navy during this crisis have involved missile defense.-Homefront-USA: Events regarding ballots continue as the Maine Secretary of State unilaterally removes Trump from their state's primary ballot. This follows Colorado re-admitting Trump to their state's primary ballot. Several conservative-led states have threatened to remove Biden from their state's primary ballots, though it is not yet clear as to how any of these moves will actually work out.Analyst Comments: At the risk of laying unnecessary criticism on the forces involved, the USS BATAAN leaving theatre at a high-risk juncture does not fit with the U.S. Navy's mission of power projection and deterrence, and provides a morale boost for Yemeni forces, who have already interpreted this move as both a victory, and as confirmation that the U.S. will not be conducting any amphibious operations within Yemen. Allowing credit where credit is due, the fleet of DDGs still O/S in the region continue to engage Yemeni drones and cruise missiles. In the U.S. electoral shenanigans will likely continue well into the new year, but at the moment it's not possible to determine how this situation will shake out. Until concrete actions are undertaken, the claims being made are just talk. Virtually no one is under the impression that legitimacy will be a factor in the 2024 election season, but the recent battles regarding primary ballots will likely be used as a jumping off point for more serious actions later in the year.-----END TEARLINE-----Analyst: S2AEND REPORTNNNN

DOMESTIC U.S. POLITICS REMAINS TUMULTUOUS. -----BEGIN TEARLINE------International Events-Red Sea/HOA: Tensions remain between the allies forming a maritime protection force in the Red Sea. Operation PROSPERITY GUARDIAN is the multi-national Task Force being led by the U.S. Navy to provide security for ships transiting the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden. France, having initially agreed to take part and commit forces, has broken from the Task Force reportedly due to poor leadership and lack of organization. France will only be providing maritime security for French-flagged ships ATT. AC: This crisis has not only highlighted leadership problems within the U.S. DoD, but also the enduring problems within the US Navy's Littoral Combat Ship (LCS) program. The LCS vessels produced in this program were designed from the keel up with this exact mission in mind, but following decades of scandal, very few of them are functional. So far, only traditional Aegis support (via DDGs and CGs) has provided protection for vessels in the Red Sea. However, as OPN PROSPERITY GUARDIAN has not really gotten underway yet, the level of support the US Navy can provide in the region is not clear. Commercial shipping companies, either unwilling to wait for the US Navy to coordinate defenses, or lacking faith in this operation altogether, have continued to re-route ships around the Cape of Good Hope.-Homefront-USA: The recent scandal surrounding the removal of candidates from primary ballots has widened. Following the removal of Donald Trump from Colorado's Republican primary ballot, several conservative-majority states have threatened to remove Joe Biden from their ballots. Several Democrat-run states have already removed Democrat candidates from their ballots, only allowing one candidate (Joe Biden) to run in their primary elections.New York: A propane truck crashed into a railroad bridge in Glenville, resulting in a large explosion and subsequent fire. The driver remains hospitalized for severe burns. Initial reporting indicates the truck may have been over height for the bridge it was passing under.-Analyst Comments-It is difficult to determine how the situation will shake out regarding ballots. Right now, there is a lot of talk, but few actual documents to examine to arrive at a definitive analysis. It is not uncommon for state-level party leadership to ban certain candidates from running under their own party, but this year the number of Democrat-run states that have only allowed Biden to run under their banner seems higher. Likewise, the removal (or blocking in some way) of Republican candidates from running due to eligibility being removed via a Supreme Court decision is unheard of. The potential for divisions between states (and more importantly, state agencies) could lead to more serious flashpoints than standard civil unrest.-----END TEARLINE-----Analyst: S2AEND REPORTNNNN

Broadly speaking, my research has been focused in the area of ‘gut health'; deciphering the interactions between nutrients, gut microbes, and immunity in swine. Currently (and since my last promotion), the major goals of my research program have been to: · Increase the knowledge base with respect to gut health in pigs using applied and basic techniques; · Continue to develop and refine a novel gnotobiotic human and porcine microbiota-associated pig model; · Determine how the effects of host-microbial interactions converge to shape gut health and nutrient metabolism in weanling pigs fed prebiotics; · Characterize the metabolic impact immune system activation and disease has on a growing pig's metabolism and growth. Dr. Nyachoti: Research Interests: · Digestive physiology of pigs · Feed ingredient evaluation for monogastrics. · Nutrition and gut health interactions. · Nutrition and the environment. Current Research Project: · Dietary manipulation and gut health and function in the piglet. · Improving dietary energy and nutrient utilization in non-ruminants using exogenous enzyme supplementation. While crop damage and crop loss are real and impactful, the recent storm that rolled over the Midwest, particularly parts of Iowa, took an even far greater toll. The real story is with the people in those cities and areas hard hit. Seeing it first-hand on recent trip through the area, Provimi senior market analyst, David Baur provides his perspective in leading off this week’s episode of Feedstuffs Precision Pork.In the hog world, Bauer believes sow herd reductions are going to reduce production in the last half of 2020. He notes there are signs of upside technical momentum on the charts. The September hogs and pigs survey is being conducted and wraps up by Sept. 1. Market discussions now speak directly to the sow herd, summer pig crops and June's estimate for reduced fall farrowing, says Bauer.Bauer believes this is all price positive. What's the word on forward profitability? He fills us in on that as well. Among other things, he says we are seeing more producers being able to reduce feed costs by bringing DDGs back into diets. These are uncertain times and it will pay dividends to be well-prepared.
