The destigmatization of men seeking mental health assitance

The Chinanna Show

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 2, 2023 7:55

In the past, men have been socialized to believe that seeking help is a sign of weakness. This has led to a culture where men are less likely to seek help for their mental health issues or personal problems. However, in recent years, there has been a growing movement to destigmatize seeking help among men. One reason for this shift is the recognition that mental health issues affect everyone regardless of gender. According to the National Institute of Mental Health, men are less likely than women to seek help for mental health issues, despite the fact that they are just as likely to experience these issues. This is due in part to the societal expectation that men should be strong and self-reliant. In this episode we cover ways in which we can start the process of destigmatization, talking points include: 1) Raise awareness about the importance of mental health and to provide resources for men who may be struggling. This includes providing access to therapy, support groups, and other mental health services that are tailored to men's needs. 2) Men may face unique challenges when seeking mental health support. For example, men may feel pressure to conform to traditional gender roles and may be hesitant to seek help for fear of being seen as weak or vulnerable. Mental health services that are tailored to men's needs and provide a safe and supportive environment can help address these concerns and encourage more men to seek help. 3) Another way to destigmatize seeking help among men is by providing accessible and affordable mental health services. Many men may be hesitant to seek help due to financial concerns or lack of access to resources. By making mental health services more accessible and affordable, more men may be willing to seek help when they need it. In conclusion, while progress has been made in destigmatizing men seeking help, there is still more work to be done. By continuing to raise awareness, providing accessible and affordable mental health services, and addressing the unique challenges that men may face, we can encourage more men to seek the assistance they need to live healthy and fulfilling lives. Today we have an amazing guest, Leeor Gal, better known as “The Therapy Gal.” I've recently become acquainted with Leeor through social media and listening to her podcast  “Therapists Out of Office.” They had a conversation recently called “Therapy 101,” which I related to heavily.    I've been open about my mental health journey, and I've really had to get back to a lot of the foundational work. Listening to their podcast caused me to reflect on my journey, how it started, and how far I have come. A lot of what I'm working on is rooted in starting over again and examining where I misstepped and where I need to improve for the future.   Another inspiration came in the form of someone reaching out to me after meeting in person to discuss how difficult it is for them to talk to others about their mental health challenges. They wanted to be able to have more conversations about the challenges they're working through, including how to approach starting therapy. To me, this was the universe saying “your on a similar path, you should discuss this with Leeor.”   Leeor is a marriage and family therapist, and I brought her on to discuss where and how to start your own mental health journey. I also appreciate that Leeor is great at making therapy humorous and bringing her comedic personality into her therapy and mental health-related content. There are a few videos of hers that I have actually laughed out loud at, which I think is a great way to destigmatize this difficult topic. Making mental health relatable and funny helps open up conversations that might not happen otherwise.   Please welcome Leeor Gal to the show!Find Leeor Gal here:   Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/the_therapy_gal/    TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@thetherapygal?lang=en    Website: https://thetherapygal.com/ Find Nick Thompson here:   Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/nthompson513/   YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCXipWcR8Pit6vYHd1ZcKgKg

Destigmatization with Dr. Jessica Lubahn of ONDRwear In this week's episode I chat with Dr. Jessica Lubahn, a urologist and founder of the company ONDRwear. Hear how she decided to embark on this journey and what made her decide to start this company. She says that she witnessed not only the daily frustrations and embarrassment that arose from urinary leakage (urinary incontinence) in both men and women, but also the limitations and potential side effects of more invasive treatment. The word that she chose was "destigmatization" because she wants to bring awareness about just how common this issue is with the hopes of having open conversations without the shame or stigma that sometimes comes with living with incontinence. Sarah Sofka, MD, FACP, is an Associate Professor and Program Director of the Internal Medicine Residency Program at West Virginia University. She completed her medical school and residency from West Virginia University. Dr. Sofka has a career devoted to mentorship from her role as Chief Resident during residency, to Associate Program Director, and now as Program Director. Dr. Sofka also chairs the GME Wellness Committee which focuses on preventing resident burnout and promoting wellness. She has received numerous awards for excellence in medicine throughout her career. When deciding between residency programs, consider the following: Does it seem like a supportive program? Is it flexible? Could you take vacation when you need it? Today, Dr. Sarah Sofka stresses the importance of self-care. She teaches us about creating an environment that is conducive to our success—and our well-being. It is important to make decisions on where you feel at home, and where you are able to look after yourself. Because although it is better to give than to receive, we cannot adequately care for our patients if we are not looking after ourselves. Pearls of Wisdom: 1. When choosing a career path, find what you like most, and where you feel at home. 2. Be humble: Don't be afraid to admit when you're wrong even as you reach an advanced stage in your career. 3. What defines a successful leader is knowing what your shortcomings are and being able to reflect on those and eventually improve. 4. You have to be open to constructive feedback as a way of making you better, and ultimately contributing to your success.

The team concluded that it “It supports and confirms research done in the last 60 years that people who conform to masculinity have poor mental health.” The truth behind this research is teaching our children to “man up” is tearing people down and we have incorporated this as healthy practice. The traits that were most prevalent for an unhealthy mental state were “Winning, emotional control, risk-taking, violence, dominance, playboy, self-reliance, power over women, and disdain for homosexuals.” The top three that stood out more than the rest were in regards to frail mental health were “Sexual promiscuity, self-reliance and power of women.” This study also showed that in men, mental illness is more easily masked. It’s been shown for decades that women are more apt to recognize illness of any sort and get help. The studies concluded that women aren’t any healthier but that some men just repress it. And here's the word of the day everyone: Destigmatization. So what does that mean?!? For Meg Worden, it's understanding and dealing with addiction without judgement and having to find fault. Addiction put her behind bars as a single mother, addiction that was an attempt to fill the voids in her life. But after doing her time, she put herself back in the driver's seat of her life and has taken her experience and packaged it. She now mentors incarcerated women to take their “anti-establishment” attitude and use it not to be put behind bars, but to become incredible entrepreneurs who have the ability to see what others do not.
