Why Eating Local Isn't a Climate Solution Among the most popular bits of advice for those seeking to reduce their carbon footprint is to “eat local.” But unfortunately, eating local is not a climate solution that packs much of a punch. When it comes to lessening food's climate impact, it's almost entirely about eating less meat and more plants — not where those plants and meat come from. Together, we reflected on building deeper connections in a digital age.David Crowley founded Social Capital Inc. (SCI) over 20 years ago in his hometown of Woburn, Massachusetts. Under his leadership, SCI has grown to serve communities across the region while continuing to make a difference in Woburn. There are a lot of regulations that cover farm products, and running afoul of them can be costly or even put you out of business. Alexia Kulwiec, Executive Director of the Farm-To-Consumer Legal Defense Fund (FTCLDF) is on the podcast this week to talk about how her organization protects the rights of farmers to sell directly to the public. This is especially important since, with a patchwork of state and federal regulations, sometimes the wrong regulations have been applied to farmers, or been applied improperly. The FTCLDF is helping farmers proactively, by working to influence state and local policy to ease the regulatory burden placed on farmers, and they also help farmers who are facing inspection and other regulatory issues. In this interview with host April Parms Jones, hear what the legal issues are that farmers have been facing, how FTCLDF is helping, and why this can help decentralize of our food system. Welcome back to the Eat Local New York Podcast. This week my guests are Kevin and Corey from Bickering Twins in Ithaca Here is a little about them from their website. "Corey + Kevin Adelman are identical twin brothers originally from northern New Jersey. Kevin attended Ithaca College in 2010 and studied in Bolivia as part of his schooling. After living on and off in Bolivia for two years, Kevin became enamored by Latin culture and Latin food. Corey joined Kevin in Ithaca in 2015 and they began creating the concept for Bickering Twins as a "pop-up" restaurant while continuing to train in a handful of local restaurant kitchens. After testing the concept for 2 years at local restaurants Lincoln Street Diner and Carriage House Cafe, they decided to open their own restaurant together. Bickering Twins reflects their love of food and cooking and their desire to bring the flavors and ingredients of Latin America to Ithaca." Special thanks to our sponsors this week. Welcome to Chit & Chat; today my guest is Sassy is an English Country rock pop artist now living in Nashville, Tennessee. During her childhood, Sassy's love for music was initially inspired by the extraordinary female vocalists Olivia Newton-John and Shania Twain, who both inspired her and helped her to become the singer songwriter she is today. Formerly a county squad gymnast and dancer, Sassy qualified as a fitness instructor, honing her performance skills which took her into modelling. A chance moment seeing Shania Twain singing ‘That Don't Impress Me Much' created the germ of an idea to become a Shania lookalike. She won a talent contest performing as Shania was the platform Sassy needed to become a tribute performing artist when she realized she was destined for more as a writer and singer. She has toured England in several tribute bands which helped developed her confidence to become a solo artist in bars & clubs singing all genres of music, alongside honing her Shania Twain performance act which she took on European tour. She has some great music and is working on some more upcoming projects, you can find her on Facebook. Please check out her music on Spotify & Youtube. I am sharing 2 of her songs. Today on Chit & Chat I have the opportunity to talk with Sarah Ashley is an independent singer songwriter based in Nashville Tennessee, we talked about food for a little bit and who doesn't love food? She shared about early years in which her musical journey begin by banging on pots and pans through out the house. He musical style is modern country rock, which came from multiple influences during her childhood listening to: The Mamas and the Papas, The Beach Boys, Patsy Cline, and various classic 1940's country artists. Sarah's parents always had some music playing in the background at home while she was growing up, in fact her father wired the entire house with speakers inside and out. Sarah remembers getting in trouble when she was at her grandparents house (on her father's side of the family.) Her punishment would be to sit on the organ bench. Little did she know that her "timeouts" would turn into Sarah and her grandfather playing a duet! Sarah's grandfather on clarinet and she on the family's organ. Sarah now thinks it paid off being the only girl with so many rowdy boys in her family! She came to realize looking back that what she had thought was a punishment would turn out to be one of her most precious memories and may have lead to her pursuits in music. For years, she have been told, ‘stop dreaming, get back to earth and learn how to become successful with a 9-5 career.' she would listen to these pieces of advice whilst continuing to write songs when everyone else slept. As the years went by, the voice in my head said my purpose in life is connected to music. It told me not to give up, however my fear and insecurities held me back until the 2020 pandemic. It was this time that made me realise how priceless time really is. During lockdown, Ewelina went for long walk along the coast line as she was walking, she came across a stone in the shape of a heart. She believes this was a sign from God to carry on with what I love doing - music. She began working harder and harder more that ever before so I could improve. She has learned to believe in herself, no matter what others said. Ewelina has learned to love herself and embrace her progress, her voice is no unique. I hope you enjoy our time together. Our podcast spotlight interview comes from a while back from episode #56. Sarah Nations, joined me and we had a great conversation. She has face many trails and tribulations along the way, and she is the author of a book called, "Trauma Queen." Please go back and check out the entire episode when you have a moment. She has an incredible story of challenges she has faced and overcame. I got some great tunes that I am playing today, Not only I am I playing of one Ewelina song's called, " Someone Else," But I also have song by Aaron English, called "For All Your Love," and Garnzeal, Tear Me A Part, We are also sharing day from the National Day Calendar from Feb 8th to the 14th.
