ENGLAND SECURES SURPRISE VICTORY AMIDST ASHES CONTROVERSY Colleague Jeremy Zakis. Zakisreports that England unexpectedly won the fourth Ashes test despite playing poorly earlier in the series. The match ended quickly, causing controversy regarding the Melbourne pitch and accusations of poor play on both sides. Commentators blame England's aggressive "Bazball" style and lack of technical skill for previous losses. Conversely, Australianbowlers are praised for successfully mixing brute force with technical precision to dismantle English batting throughout the contest. 1862 ASHES AT MELBOURNE

In "Via Francigena: Slow Travel, History, and Self-Discovery on Foot," host Annie Sargent chats with Olivier Andrieu about his incredible 100-day journey along the Via Francigena. Olivier, a former corporate sales director, decided to quit his job and walk from Canterbury, England, to Rome, Italy. He wanted a fresh start and a challenge, and the Via Francigena provided both. Listen to this episode ad-free Olivier shares the highs and lows of his adventure. He walked an average of 25 kilometers per day, staying in convents, monasteries, and Airbnbs along the way. He met people from all over the world, discovered hidden historical gems, and immersed himself in the beauty of slow travel. Olivier's journey took him through England, France, Switzerland, and Italy, offering a rich tapestry of landscapes and cultures. One of the highlights of Olivier's journey was the historical discoveries he made. He learned about a young World War I soldier whose name was engraved in a church near his home. He visited the statue of Rodin in Calais and discovered convents just an hour's drive from his home that he had never seen before. These discoveries added depth and meaning to his journey, connecting him to the history and culture of the places he visited. Annie and Olivier also discuss practical tips for anyone considering a similar journey. Olivier recommends a 35-liter backpack and high-quality gear. He used Akileine Nok cream to prevent blisters and had minimal injuries throughout his journey. His packing tips and advice on finding accommodations are invaluable for anyone planning a long-distance walk. In the magazine segment, Annie critiques The New York Times' "36 Hours in Toulouse" article, emphasizing the importance of experiencing the city beyond a quick checklist. She also dives into the intricate work behind Paris's Christmas windows and updates listeners on the success of free-flow tolling on the A13 motorway. If you love travel stories, historical adventures, or are dreaming of exploring France on foot, this episode is for you. But are Arsenal beginning to feel the pressure? The focus then shifts to The Ashes, where England finally claimed a Test win in Australia—but John believes it was a hollow victory played out on a dreadful pitch.Next up is Aston Villa's superb run of eleven consecutive wins. A 2–1 victory at Stamford Bridge has moved them to within three points of league leaders Arsenal—but with Unai Emery's side consistently outperforming their xG, can they keep this run going? Finally, we turn to Liverpool's 2–1 victory over bottom-of-the-table Wolves. Today we talk about the play Hamlet written by William Shakespeare. We compare more traditional takes on the themes of the play to a more modern, philosophical analysis of the play done by Simon Critchley and Jamieson Webster. We talk about Hamlet and his inability to take action. Surveillance in 16th century England. Ophelia as the tragic hero of the play. How ultimately Hamlet may best be described as a play about "nothing". For the first Lang Fairy Tales episode of this 'between series break' we have an absolute classic - The Goose Girl.If you like talking decapitated horse heads, cheeky goose boys and a good ol' fashioned tale of comeuppance, this one's definitely for you.If you are unfamiliar with the Lang Fairy Tales, these seminal collections were assembled between 1889 and 1913 by a married couple, folklorists and translators Nora and Andrew Lang, with most of the work done to compile them completed by Nora, also known as Leonora Blanche Alleyne.Assembled and published in 12 colour-coded "Fairy Books," the corpus the Langs put together included 798 fairy tales from across cultures, many of which had never before been translated into English. They were amongst the most influential books of their time, changing the course of children's literature - although they're hardly just for children, and often deal with quite challenging concepts.Today, purchasing a complete set of the Lang Fairy Books in good condition costs over £4,000 ($5,000+).Thankfully, the collections are all out of copyright, meaning that we can now tell these stories, in podcast form, many for the first time, and share them with a global audience, for free. Our plan is to release the stories between main series of Three Ravens, performing them straight (though with plenty of silly voices) letting the tales speak for themselves in all their madcap, sharp-edged, often quite bizarre glory. The only edits we have made are to amend some culturally-insensitive epithets, which typically pertain to ethnicity, with any such edits made by Eleanor Conlon.Three Ravens is an English Myth and Folklore podcast hosted by award-winning writers Martin Vaux and Eleanor Conlon.Released on Mondays, each weekly episode focuses on one of England's 39 historic counties, exploring the history, folklore and traditions of the area, from ghosts and mermaids to mythical monsters, half-forgotten heroes, bloody legends, and much, much more. Then, and most importantly, the pair take turns to tell a new version of an ancient story from that county - all before discussing what that tale might mean, where it might have come from, and the truths it reveals about England's hidden past...Bonus Episodes are released on Thursdays plus Local Legends episodes on Saturdays - interviews with acclaimed authors, folklorists, podcasters and historians with unique perspectives on that week's county. With a range of exclusive content on Patreon, too, including audio ghost tours, the Three Ravens Newsletter, and monthly Three Ravens Film Club episodes about folk horror films from across the decades, why not join us around the campfire and listen in?Learn more at www.threeravenspodcast.com, join our Patreon at www.patreon.com/threeravenspodcast, and find links to our social media channels here: https://linktr.ee/threeravenspodcastREGISTER FOR THE TALES OF SOUTHERN ENGLAND TOURProud members of the Dark Cast Network.Visit our website Join our Patreon Social media channels and sponsors Hosted on Acast. Simon Hughes and Simon Mann reflect on England's first Test victory in Australia since January 7th 2011. This was a remarkable and rather unsatisfactory Test which lasted barely a day and a half on an MCG pitch which had a bit too much help for the seam bowlers but on which no batter was prepared to be patient. An impressive opening stand between Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett showed up some rather hapless Australian batting, and the youngster Jacob Bethell made a crucial 40 in a tricky runchase. At last 10,000 English fans have an England victory to celebrate though Cricket Australia will bemoan major revenue losses. Robb Kelly, PhD – The Recovery Expert – was born in Manchester, England. He grew up in a family of musicians and developed a deep love for music at an early age. He was performing on stage by the age of nine. During his early twenties, he worked at the prestigious Abbey Road Studios as a session musician in London.Addiction was always close to his heart, as Dr. Kelly was born into a family with a history of alcoholism. He began drinking and using drugs at a young age, but he managed to stay on a path of success, moving to Oxford in the early 1980s to pursue a PhD in Psychology at the esteemed University of Oxford. He continued to drink heavily during his time in Oxford—yet still managed to complete his doctoral studies, earning a PhD in psychology in 1984.Even though he was a heavy drinker, no one would have predicted that he would end up living on the streets of Manchester, homeless and alone. He recalls a night when he had a staggering realization about his own alcoholism. It would later inspire two of his most popular catchphrases: “The Problem is not our Drinking, it is our Thinking” and “Step out of the Disease, and into the Solution.”Dr. Kelly was standing on a street corner one night in Manchester, body trembling from alcohol withdrawal. He stood in front of a liquor store, shaking and desperately waiting for it to open. He knew that as soon as he took that first sip of alcohol, he would feel relief. As soon as the store opened, he rushed inside. The clerk grabbed a bottle of vodka from the shelf and placed it in a brown paper bag before him. As he lifted the bag, his trembling stopped. His body ceased shaking, and his mind found peace. He hadn't even taken the first sip; it was just the promise of alcohol that stopped his shaking and eased his restlessness.Dr Robb Kelly Official Website: https://robbkelly.com/Unlocking Humanity with Ancient Knowledge | Host John Edmonds Kozma Hosted on Acast. England finally broke their drought in Australia at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, but the speed of the win caught everyone off guard. Corbin and Ed unpack a Boxing Day Test that raced from first ball to result in just two days, with Ed capturing the feeling around the ground simply: “It felt deflating.”England's win was shaped by standout individual performances. Josh Tongue earned Player of the Match after spearheading Australia's first-innings collapse, with Brydon Carse and Gus Atkinson providing key support. In the chase, Jacob Bethell steadied the innings before Harry Brook closed out the win. For Australia, Scott Boland again impressed, while Travis Head and Alex Carey offered resistance with the bat.Despite the constant action, Ed reckoned that “some things in life are best enjoyed slowly,” and this match “didn't get time to breathe,” with Corbin describing it as a contest where “the result arrived before the story.” England took the points. Corbin and Ed look ahead to what comes next.ABC Grandstand cricket commentator Corbin Middlemas is joined by Ed Cowan to bring you all the highlights and match analysis to keep you up to speed. Follow James Bannerman throughout history as he seeks to answer those driving questions: “Why are we here?” and “What is our purpose?” If a family can respect its heritage and forefathers, any member can rise to greatness. But the evils of human nature and temptations of life must first be overcome. In The Rise to Power, the first book in The Legacy Series, Cartius, who lives in the previous age of Atlantis, faces a dire choice. He can go with his father to a different star system and continue his way of life at an even higher level of dimension—or he can choose to die, reincarnate, and save his planet. James Bannerman, Tenth Earl of Penbroke, England, is Cartius. Before his death, Cartius makes the fateful decision to remain on Earth. He also leaves his teleportation chair to a faithful servant, and the chair makes its way, under lock and key, to its place as a regal throne in the East Wing of Bannerman's estate. The decisions Bannerman must face—in a world intertwined with marriage, love affairs, human intrigue, and deception—will define his future. And that of many. A family can become a small nation, then a large nation, and then a great nation with a great legacy. But first it must uncover its true spiritual knowledge. James Bannerman will find the key to that lies in the throne. Along with determining their legacy, Bannerman and his family—whose roots go back to 1704—will also unlock the question man has wrestled with since his earliest beginnings: Why are we here?

To celebrate Melvyn Bragg's 27 years presenting In Our Time, five well-known fans of the programme have chosen their favourite episodes. Author and columnist Caitlin Moran has picked the episode on the English medieval mystic Margery Kempe and recorded an introduction to it. Margery Kempe (1373-1438) produced an account of her extraordinary life in a book she dictated, "The Book of Margery Kempe." She went on pilgrimage to Jerusalem, to Rome and Santiago de Compostela, purchasing indulgences on her way, met with the anchoress Julian of Norwich and is honoured by the Church of England each 9th November. She sometimes doubted the authenticity of her mystical conversations with God, as did the authorities who saw her devotional sobbing, wailing and convulsions as a sign of insanity and dissoluteness. Her Book was lost for centuries, before emerging in a private library in 1934.This In Our Time episode was first broadcast in June 2016. The image (above), of an unknown woman, comes from a pew at Margery Kempe's parish church, St Margaret's, Kings Lynn and dates from c1375.WithMiri Rubin Professor of Medieval and Early Modern History at Queen Mary, University of LondonKatherine Lewis Senior Lecturer in History at the University of HuddersfieldAndAnthony Bale Professor of Medieval Studies at Birkbeck University of LondonProducer: Simon TillotsonReading list:John H.
