Rosebud with Gyles Brandreth

Sir Tim Rice, lyricist extraordinaire, is Gyles's guest today. Tim is one of the few people in the entertainment world to have won an Emmy, a Grammy, an Oscar and a Tony Award, and his songs for shows like Joseph, Evita, Jesus Christ Superstar, Chess and the Lion King are known and loved all around the world. And yet Sir Tim remains modest and charming, as you'll hear in this conversation - perhaps thanks to the good manners he inherited from his father. Tim tells Gyles about his childhood, his schooldays at Lancing College and how, despite his lack of ambition, he moved to London and got a job with EMI. Much of this conversation, not surprisingly, is about music: the records Tim listened to as a teenager, the band he played with at school, and the first songs he wrote and which helped him to get noticed. We find out how he met Andrew Lloyd Webber and started to make musical history. Thank you Sir Tim Rice for your warmth, wit and wonderful stories. Tim Rice is on a nationwide tour telling his brilliant stories and featuring some of his best-known songs until the end of May, tickets available here Learn more about your ad choices. In this episode of the podcast, we are joined by David Cameron and Mick Waters to discuss the legacy of Sir Tim Brighouse, a significant figure in UK education. They explore Tim's influence, personal stories, and the concept of 'unfinished business' in education, emphasising the importance of continuous improvement and community engagement. The conversation highlights the need for actionable steps in education and the lasting impact of Tim's work. The conversation reflects on the legacy of people like Sir Tim and others like Sir Ken Robinson and David Price, focusing on the importance of teacher empowerment, the challenges of compliance in education, and the need for a more human-centred approach to teaching. We discuss the impact of politics on education, the necessity of autonomy for teachers, and the significance of inclusion and accessibility in the educational landscape. They advocate for a shift in metrics and accountability, focusing on strengths rather than compliance, and highlight the call to action for educators to retain joy and purpose in their profession. In this episode I'm speaking with Mick Waters and David Cameron, two of the editors of a wonderful new book Unfinished Business: The life and legacy of Sir Tim Brighouse - a tribute and a call to action. It's a long title and rightly so - there's a lot to say about Tim and about the ideas he pursued throughout his remarkable career. Mick Waters is a former head teacher who works closely with teachers and leaders in schools, MATs and local authorities to support the development of teaching approaches and curriculum to ensure the best learning outcomes for children. For some years he was Director of Curriculum for England, based at the Qualification and Curriculum Authority (QCA), and before that held the post of Chief Education Officer for the City of Manchester. He is also invited to work at a policy level with government in different parts of the world. David Cameron has been a teacher, a senior manager in schools and in local authorities, most recently as Director of Children's Services for Stirling Council. He was President of the Association of Directors of Education Scotland and has been centrally involved in virtually every major development in Scottish education over the last 40 years. More recently he has been an independent speaker and consultant working across the UK and internationally. There will be a British general election on July 4. “The most consequential of our generation” no doubt many politicians will remind the voters. But almost exactly 45 years ago, there really was a profoundly consequential British election. Back in May 1979, Mrs Margaret Thatcher's Conservative party won power in an election that ultimately changed everything about Britain. In 1979, (Sir) Tim Lankester was the first economic private secretary to Margaret Thatcher and, in his new book, INSIDE THATCHER'S MONETARISM EXPERIMENT, he writes about the promise, failure and legacy of this radical economic gamble. Yet in spite of the economic failure of Thatcher's monetarist experiment, Sir Tim appears not a little nostalgic for a politician with the vision and will of the Iron Lady. “Mrs Thatcher never lied”, he reminded me about a politician whose success at the polls was rooted in the trust she established with the electorate. And it's this trust that seems most scarce now, not just in the UK, but also in the US and other late-stage western democracies. Sir Tim Lankester has led a distinguished career in economics and public service and is an ardent supporter of charity and the arts. After studying at St John's College, Cambridge, and Yale University, Tim went on to enjoy an career with World Bank and then in the English Civil Service, including; at the British Embassy in Washington D.C., as Private Secretary to James Callaghan and Margaret Thatcher, as Permanent Secretary at the Overseas Development Administration (now the DFID), and at the Department of Education. He retired from public service in 1994, for which he was knighted. He went on to serve as Director of the School of Oriental and African Studies (1996 – 2000), President of Corpus Christi College, Oxford (2001 - 2009), and Chair of the Council of the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (2008 – 2014). From 2007 to 2015, Tim was Chair of The Place and formerly a board member of the Conservatoire for Dance and Drama and Governor of the Royal College of Music. Currently, Tim sits on the boards for many charities, including; Wells Maltings Trust, Norfolk; International Foundation for Arts and Culture; MBI AL Jaber Foundation; and Karachi Education Initiative UK. Tim also sits on the Board for the Sainsbury Institute for the Study of Japanese Art and Culture, University of East Anglia, and is and Honorary Fellow of both SOAS and St John's College, Oxford.Named as one of the "100 most connected men" by GQ magazine, Andrew Keen is amongst the world's best known broadcasters and commentators. Aviator and deer industry pioneer Sir Tim Wallis has died at age 85. From Greymouth, Sir Tim built a career which began with his family's timber business, while he enjoyed spending much of his free time hunting deer and developing live capture methods now used across the globe. He became one of New Zealand's wealthiest businessmen through deer farming - and as his wealth accumulated, he began to buy and restore old World War 2 planes. What began as a hobby grew into the New Zealand Fighter Pilots' Museum in Wānaka and the Warbirds Over Wānaka air show which Sir Wallis founded in 1988 as a way to share his collection. Airshow pilot John Lamont met Sir Tim at the first Warbirds Over Wānaka event in '88, and has flown at every show to date. He says his friend Tim came up with ideas nobody had ever dreamed of, including iconic mock-warplane attacks at event finales. Lamont spoke to Ingrid Hipkiss.

Support ClimateGenn on Patreon: https://patreon.com/genncc and visit our website at https://genn.cc Minnie's work looks at how the dynamics between civic groups and governing bodies can determine very different outcomes. Distrust of government by those most impacted communities meant they worked hard and fast to repair the damage to the same standards experienced before Katrina hit. A better-informed approach would have looked at what was necessary to protect them against future impacts that the science tells us are increasing in power and frequency. Minnie's work gives us insight into how civic groups and communities are likely to become more resilient based on the characteristics and efficacy of regional government. In this episode we talk about the chilling gothic elements in this story, and how the ratcheting tension is cut through with the refreshingly straight-talking Nidd family, and the absolutely charming love story (with a real cracker of a proposal scene). Everyone falls under the spell of Kate Malvern of course. She's an intrepid heroine who grew up following the drum, isn't above working to support herself, and is quite capable of slapping her employer's lecherous relative. And Philip, with his loyalty and kindness, proves himself worthy of her. Minerva, Torquil and Sir Tim on the other hand are much more dubious figures (unless you've got more sympathy for Sir Timothy than we have). Machiavellian machinations and murder galore in that unhappy little triumvirate. We end up discussing whether Sir Tim had a happier ending than he deserved, and how Heyer forces us to feel sympathy for Torquil. And then there's Minerva - you know we love dissecting a good baddie, and she certainly gives us plenty to get our teeth into. “He addressed himself to Kate, saying, in his stateliest manner: ‘I beg your pardon, miss, but since her ladyship is unwell I feel it my duty to inform you that Mrs Thorne has seen fit to Prophesy!'” Instagram: @georgetteheyerpodcast Twitter: @heyerpodcast

"I am completely turned on by being a frog kisser." Sir Tim Smit KBE is one of the most recognisable and respected characters in the field of environment and sustainability.  He is probably best known for his achievements in Cornwall where he ‘discovered' and then restored The Lost Gardens of Heligan with John Nelson, which is now one of the UK's best-loved gardens. Tim is Executive Vice-Chair and Co-founder of the multi-award-winning Eden Project in Cornwall. Since its opening in 2001, over 22 million people have come to see a once sterile pit, turned into a cradle of life containing world-class horticulture and startling architecture symbolic of human endeavour.  Tim is also Executive Co-Chair for Eden Project International which aims to have an Eden Project on every inhabited continent by 2025. In this warm and engaging episode of Wanderful, David gets to have a meandering talk with one of his heroes exploring the inspiration behind Tim's projects and what makes them magnetic to the thousands of people who keep them vibrant and alive. Tim touches upon the problem of male vanity & ego at a time when there is a need for more collaboration and ensemble-working as we turn our attention to the challenges of climate change. The conversation ends with a gentle analysis of the word ‘community' and the importance of gifting and relationship building. Plans are being laid by a citizens coalition in Invercargill to topple Sir Tim Shadbolt as Mayor, come next year's local body elections. The city is already on course for its fourth deputy mayor in as many years as the man currently holding the job - Nobby Clark - has no intention of standing again. An independent review last year found most of the council's tensions stemmed from a leadership void, with Sir Tim increasingly unable to carry out duties. Our Otago-Southland reporter, Timothy Brown, has more.

Now to Invercargill, where Mayor Sir Tim Shadbolt's driver's licence has created the latest flashpoint for ructions around the council table. Sir Tim's licence has been suspended - that's been established. What isn't known is why. Deputy mayor Nobby Clark has told Sir Tim to tell the public what's going on, so the matter can be put to bed. Instead, Sir Tim referred Clark to his lawyer and on the Mayor's Facebook page he posted a news story about the matter, suggesting it was his - quote - most current "Et tu Brute" moment. Nobby Clark is the third deputy mayor of the city in as many years, after his predecessor, Toni Biddle, stepped down in October citing the toxic culture around the council table. Her predecessor, Rebecca Amundsen, wasn't chosen for the role following 2019's elections after she stood against him for mayor. An independent review, released last year, found most of the council's tensions stemmed from a leadership void, with Sir Tim increasingly unable to carry out duties, which the mayor dismissed immediately - saying he was a scapegoat. Clark told Otago-Southland reporter Timothy Brown he's finished with the role after next year's election.

There is an editorial in the newspapers today calling on Sir Tim Shadbolt to explain to his ratepayers why he's had his driver's licence suspended.I agree with the editorial that he needs to do this. This story has been doing the rounds for a week now. The whole way through Sir Tim has insisted he doesn't want to talk about it, saying it's a confidential matter. But it has now been confirmed by NZTA that he has had his licence suspended. I feel for terrible for Sir Tim that it is playing out in public, but it does unfortunately come with the territory of being accountable to ratepayers. And because there is no explanation for why the licence is suspended, that vacuum is being fill with speculation, and that centres on concern about whether this is related to Sir Tim's alleged increasing inability to do his job. Sir Tim's ability is under serious question now. An independent review late last year found he's increasingly unable to fulfil his duties. His councillors say he struggles to follow what's happening in meetings. His deputy mayor quit last year saying she had been doing his job for him. Three southern mayors have raised concerns about Sir Tim  Ratepayers deserve to know what's happened, at the very least so they can take that into account at next year's council elections. If that's not the case, then it's in Sir Tim's best interests to clear that up, so the speculation stops.  As I've said, my sympathies are with Sir Tim, the speculation and the attention are awful I'm sure. But, there are 57,000 people paying his salary, and they deserve to know what is going on here.

An independent review has found the country's longest-serving mayor, Sir Tim Shadbolt is struggling to do his job. The review into Invercargill City Council was prompted by the Department of Internal Affairs, which had flagged concern in how the council was operating. The council unanimously accepted the report less than a fortnight ago. Today, with its public release, the mayor struck a far different tone. Our Otago-Southland reporter, Timothy Brown, has this report, from Invercargill.

Faced with an independent report that said he was struggling to do significant aspects of his job, Invercargill Mayor Sir Tim Shadbolt tried to deflect the unflattering attention. He pointed the finger at Invercargill councillors, said he was not given enough administrative support and described himself as the victim of a vendetta."The actual content of the report, I am not willing to wear," he said."I refuse to take the mantle of convenient scapegoat."Sir Tim (73) said the report, prepared by independent evaluator Richard Thomson, was flawed and he suggested too much of it was aimed at his shortcomings and those of deputy mayor Nobby Clark."Anyone who has faith in this report, with its glowing praises and singularly directed criticisms, is also likely to believe that we shall soon see Auckland Island pigs flying over Queens Park."Mr Thomson’s report, released yesterday, said there was a clear consensus the mayor was struggling to fulfil significant aspects of his role. The result of this was a leadership void. There was also no working relationship between the mayor and chief executive Clare Hadley. The dysfunctional dynamics extended to new deputy mayor Cr Clark, who many interviewees said was aggressive and rude.Cr Clark said the report was challenging, but he was willing to take its findings on the chin.Sir Tim had previously accepted the findings of the report, but was not so accepting yesterday. He did, however, believe the planned intervention of two external observers could be positive.Concerns were raised before last year’s election about Sir Tim’s ability to follow what was happening at meetings, but he was still re-elected.Yesterday, he said there was a culture of one-upmanship among councillors and he delivered a withering review of their conduct.Several councillors were startled by the mayor’s comments.Cr Darren Ludlow said the council unanimously received the report and accepted its findings.Southland Chamber of Commerce chief executive Sheree Carey said the chamber supported the report’s findings."I’m just really confused about Sir Tim’s reaction to it."If you have an independent review coming out saying he is the major problem, then he needs to take responsibility and not continue to blame other people."

Join Head of Purpose Mark Longbottom interviewing the inspirational Sir Tim Smit. Tim dreamt about a gigantic ‘tree museum' that would go on to become one of the largest and most popular tourist attractions in the world. He turned that dream into a reality around the time of the new millennium. The project centred on the build of these giant biomes that take people on a journey of discovery through the undergrowth of Africa, Asia, Australasia, the Mediterranean all while using green technologies. Sir Tim and his team raised £80 million as start-up and build capital, transforming a disused China Clay Pit in Cornwall to social enterprise that has brought over £1 billion to the once failing Cornish economy. He describes it as ‘kissing a frog to make a prince' . The museum became so much more and had educated hundreds and thousands and promises to spread its magic across the Globe including China and New Zealand. Hear about Edens challenge with the effects of COVID-19, Tim's founder story including the early years as a successful music writer and producer in Soho, his frustration with his beloved Nottingham Forest and so much more. It really is a great listen. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/mark-longbottom2/message

He considers the evolution of diplomatic tradecraft, and the different cultures of diplomacy around the world. Sir Tim argues that the biggest challenge this century, will be between rules-based international relations and power-based. However, he goes on to explain that for rules-based diplomacy to survive, the rules themselves need to evolve to reflect changing realities, and that arguing for the status quo is a dead end.

Sir Tim Waterstone is the founder of the bookshop chain that bears his name. Born in May 1939, he was the youngest of three children. His father, who worked for a tea company all his life, served in the Royal Army Service Corps during the war, and so was absent when Tim was very young. Their relationship was difficult throughout his childhood. Tim was educated at boarding schools from the age of six, when his parents went to India for two and a half years. After studying English at Cambridge and a stint working in India, he joined Allied Breweries, moving to WH Smith in 1973. Eight years later he was fired and at this point he decided to open his own bookshop. The first Waterstone’s opened its doors in 1982 when Tim was 43. A further 86 bookshops opened within a decade. In 1993, he sold the company to his former employer, WH Smith. Five years later, he bought it back again as part of a newly formed group, HMV Media, but just three years after that, in 2001, he resigned as chairman. Since then he’s made several unsuccessful attempts to buy back the company which changed hands most recently in 2018. He recently celebrated his 80th birthday and lives in London with his third wife, the television director Rosie Alison. The second Wolfson College Lecture in Diplomacy for the 21st Century was presented by Yamina Karitanyi, the current High Commissioner for the Republic of Rwanda to the United Kingdom . The lecture was introduced by College President, Sir Tim Hitchens. In the second lecture of the Diplomacy for the 21st Century Series, Karitanyi takes the ending of Rwanda's Presidency of the African Union as the starting point for a consideration of how Africa's perspectives will change global diplomacy in the twenty-first century. She will offer thoughts on the way in which regional and continental integration across Africa may change the way in which the continent is seen globally, and the role it can play. Sir Tim commented, "in our focus on China and India, we sometimes forget that Africa is also one of this century’s emerging giants. Rwanda shows how dramatic transformation is possible - but how do you balance development and democracy? This lecture will help answer those questions.". Yamina Karitanyi is currently the High Commissioner for the Republic of Rwanda to the United Kingdom, and non-resident Ambassador to Ireland since September 2015. Having held various senior positions over ten years at GoodWorks International, a strategic consulting and advisory firm that services multinational corporations and governments, in the USA and East Africa, Karitanyi has a proven track record in international business, operations management, business negotiations, and Diplomacy.

London's Science Museum has a new exhibit which takes visitors on a voyage of discovery through two-hundred years of communication and technological evolution. CRI's Li Peichun has the story. Among the exhibits, visitors can find a wooden contraption which is an aerial tuning inductor. It was once the height of technological innovation. There are also some enormous coils which were part of Rugby Radio Station's powerful transmitter used in the 1940s, allowing them to send signals to the British Empire. Tilly Blyth, the exhibition's lead curator says this exhibition looks at the last two-hundred years of information and communication technology. "So, for us it was really important to invite our visitors to think beyond the devices that they're so familiar with - their TVs, their mobile phones, their computers - and actually think; 'Well, how did we get here? What are all the different transformations that have happened and what's the infrastructure that makes all of this possible?" Among the 800 or more objects on show are six distinct sections which deal with areas such as broadcasting, the internet and telephone communication. The exhibition begins with the first transatlantic cable laid by the Victorians in 1858 that connected Europe and North America. From that point on, inventors created a range of technology which allowed mankind to communicate in different ways. On show, there's this original Marconi radio transmitter used by the BBC to make the first public broadcast in 1922. There's also a section of a manual telephone exchange switchboard used in 1925 in north London. Fast-forwarding over 70 years, visitors will find the computer used by British computer scientist Tim Berners-Lee. Blyth explains: "This is an NeXT computer, it was at CERN in 1990 and Sir Tim actually sat there and designed the World Wide Web and launched the first web page from this computer." It was Berners-Lee's innovation that set the human race onto another stage of communication development. The exhibition also features a collection of modern smart phone designs and a Google Street View tricycle. Tilly Blyth says: "We've come an incredible way in just 200 years, but I think it also shows we're living through this moment of innovation now, we're constantly told this is an incredible period of change but actually these transformations have been happening over a whole 200 year-period." 'Information Age: Six Networks That Changed Our World' opens at the Science Museum in London on 25 October 2014. For CRI,I'm Li Peichun.
