Today on the Muster Room Podcast we welcome Jessica DuLong, the former chief engineer of the retired 1931 New York City fireboat, John J. Harvey. After the boat was sold into private hands in 1999 for preservation, DuLong joined the crew in February of 2001. As the events of September 11, 2001, were unfolding, the John J. Harvey was again pressed back into service to help rescue people trapped in the largest sea-born rescue in history before being called on to help fight the fires that ragged at the World Trade Center site. On September 12th DuLong arrived at the Harvey and operated the engine room and kept the historic fireboat pumping water for nearly 80 hours. In this episode of the Muster Room, we discuss the Harvey's role on 9/11 and how the aftermath of the tragedy impacted DuLong. If you want to learn more about Jessica DuLong she has two excellent books out now. Her 2009 book, MY RIVER CHRONICLES: Rediscovering the Work that Built America, won an American Society of Journalists and Authors Outstanding Book Award for Memoir. This episode is the first of a series we'll be putting out with stories from 9/11, told by the heroes that lived them.

When terrorists struck the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001 a small fleet of boats on a rescue mission converged on lower Manhattan. In one of the less told stories of 9/11, on those vessels—which ranged from ferries to tug boats to boats that host dinner cruises—mariners carried to safety almost half a million people. Saved at the Seawall: Stories From the September 11 Boat Lift (Cornell UP, 2021) by Jessica DuLong with a foreword by Mitchell Zukoff, tells their story. DuLong brings to this book her own skills as a journalist and her experiences as the chief engineer on the 1931 New York City fireboat John J. Harvey, a historic preservation project that was called back into service on September 11 to fight the fires around the World Trade Center. Saved at the Seawall is more than a book about September 11. It is a story of work, New York Harbor, and how the skills and mindsets that mariners developed over many years were summoned up on a terrible morning. Together, they pulled off the largest waterborne evacuation in history—larger than the evacuation at Dunkirk in World War II. Drawing on her own experiences, her reporting and the writing of Rebecca Solnit, DuLong argues that the story of the maritime rescue operations on September 11 is not one of heroes or superhuman powers, but of “pragmatism, resourcefulness and simple human decency.” The mariners who stepped up in the middle of the catastrophe, she concludes, embodied the best of our individual and collective possibilities. Robert W. Snyder, Manhattan Borough Historian and professor emeritus of American Studies and Journalism at Rutgers University-Newark, is the author of Crossing Broadway: Washington Heights and the Promise of New York (Cornell) and co-author of All the Nations Under Heaven: Immigrants, Migrants and the Making of New York (Columbia.) Jessica DuLong, the former chief engineer on NYC fireboat John J. Harvey, talks about the rescue of nearly 500,000 people, by boat, off the island of Manhattan following the 9/11 attacks. It was the largest maritime evacuation in history. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
The most famous large-scale sea rescue in history is the Dunkirk evacuation. Here nearly 400,000 Allied soldiers were surrounded by the German army in 1940, and Winston Churchill said, "the whole root and core and brain of the British Army" had been stranded at Dunkirk and seemed about to perish or be captured. But they were rescued off the coast of France between 26 May and 4 June in an improvised fleet. But few know there was actually a larger evacuation that happened in America, and it happened immediately after September 11th.At 10:45 AM EST on Tuesday, September 11, 2001, the United States Coast Guard issued the call for “all available boats” to assist the evacuation of Lower Manhattan. But hours before the official call went out, tugs, ferries, dinner boats, and other vessels had already raced to the rescue from points all across the Port of New York and New Jersey. In less than nine hours, approximately 800 mariners aboard 150 vessels transported nearly half a million people from Manhattan. This was the largest maritime evacuation in history—larger even than boat lift at Dunkirk—but the story of this effort has never fully been told. Todays guest, Jessica DuLong, author of the book SAVED AT THE SEAWALL: Stories from the September 11 Boat Lift, tells this story on the 20th anniversary of 9/11. She discusses how the New York Harbor maritime community delivered stranded commuters, residents, and visitors out of harm's way after the 9/11 World Trade Center attacks. A journalist and historian, DuLong is herself chief engineer, emerita of the retired 1931 New York City fireboat, John J. Harvey. She served at Ground Zero, spending four days supplying Hudson River water to fight the fires at the World Trade Center. To tell the story of this marine rescue, DuLong drew on her own experiences as well as eyewitness accounts to weave together the personal stories of people rescued that day with those of the mariners who saved them.As DuLong explains, “Still today few people recognize the significance of the evacuation effort that unfolded on that landmark day. This book addresses that omission. The stories that follow are the culmination of nearly a decade of reporting to discover how and why this remarkable rescue came to pass—what made the boat lift necessary, what made it possible, and why it was successful.
At 8:46 am on 11 September 2001 the first plane hit the North Tower of the World Trade Centre in Lower Manhattan. Over the next 9 hours, almost half a million people were evacuated from that island by boat, many other options being made impossible. Here to share the story of this maritime evacuation is Jessica DuLong. Jessica is a journalist and historian, as well as chief engineer emerita of the retired 1931 New York City fireboat, John J. Harvey. She tells us about the boats involved, the obstacles they faced, and about her own experience of ground zero. Her book on this topic is called ‘Saved at the Seawall: Stories from the September 11 Boat Lift'. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Kathryn interviews Author, Journalist, Historian, Marine Engineer Jessica DuLong. At 10:45 AM EST on Tuesday, September 11, 2001, the United States Coast Guard issued the call for “all available boats” to assist the evacuation of Lower Manhattan. But hours before the official call went out, tugs, ferries, dinner boats, and other vessels had already raced to the rescue from points all across the Port of New York and New Jersey. In less than nine hours, approximately 800 mariners aboard 150 vessels transported nearly half a million people from Manhattan. This was the largest maritime evacuation in history and yet the story of this heroic effort has never fully been told. A journalist and historian, Jessica DuLong is herself chief engineer, emerita of the retired 1931 New York City fireboat, John J. Harvey. She served at Ground Zero, spending four days supplying Hudson River water to fight the fires at the World Trade Center. To tell the story of this marine rescue, DuLong drew on her own experiences as well as eyewitness accounts to weave together the personal stories of people rescued that day with those of the mariners who saved them.Kathryn also interviewsAuthor Mary Joye LMHC.Codependency is often misunderstood — and under addressed. Unhealthy, codependent habits are difficult to break, and can significantly impair our ability to live authentic lives. But with the right tools, freedom from codependency is within reach. Mary Joye LMHC, who is a licensed mental health counselor and regular contributor to DailyOM.com, provides practical tools to help you get your life back. With meditations, affirmations, a quick-fix chapter and easy two-column Life Lists that offer opportunities for self-reflection, the book provides an invaluable self-help experience for readers. What makes this book unique is that the reader will explore the psychological roots of codependency along with the neuroscience, spiritual and financial facets of their codependency. More importantly, the book shows readers how to apply this knowledge to recover.

We start with Giles Alderson and Andrew Rodger having a chat with 'Mank' Cinematographer Erik Messerschmidt about going from Gaffer on Fincher’s Gone Girl to DoP on Mank and how he made the transition to make his debut feature film. He talks pre production, how he works with Fincher especially during the repeated takes, what the process was to shooting in black and white and the camera they used. Co host Phil Hawkins then joins Giles to chat to Make Up designer Gigi Williams about her process, the difference between shooting on digital vs. film. What she works on first how she collaborates with the HOD team and gives some brilliant Make Up tips. We then chat to Production Designer and Art Director Donald Graham Burt AKA Don Burt about designing the film from preparation through the shooting. He explains why listening is so important in film-making, how he researches a project and how he created the 1930/s & 1940 style and look. And how you don’t have to appease to get ahead. Finally we chat to Costume Designer Trish Summerville about how she created the look and feel of Mank through her costumes. She talks about working in teams, how to collaborate with actors to help create the characters and how to use colours and patterns to portray certain emotions! We are delighted to have legendary director Christopher Smith on this weeks episode. He has been a firm favorite of host Giles Alderson who has wanted him as guest since the start and finally he is here to talk about his latest gripping film The Banishing. Joining Giles as co host is fellow director Christian James as they discuss Chris’ journey to becoming a filmmaker. His first brilliant film Creep and how he met producer Jason Newmark who has since been a team with him pretty much all his journey as a filmmaker. We also chat about pitching and personality, what he has learned as a director and agents and managers. We discuss working on set, why it is important to create a great vibe for actors and crew and why sometimes you have to lay down the law! In 2004 Christopher Smith wrote and directed the nasty shocker CREEP, putting Franka Potente (Run Lola Run) front and centre as a woman stuck in the tunnels of the London Underground, pursued by something you really wouldn’t want to meet in the dark. Run Franka, run! Smith hit the ground running with his 2006 pitch-black horror comedy SEVERANCE, about a team-building excursion that goes horribly, dreadfully wrong. Featuring a talking decapitated head, Danny Dyer on superb wideboy form, women blasting machine guns and one of the cheekiest pay-off lines in cinema history, this was a brilliant mix of the horrifying and hilarious that had audiences howling in delight. In 2009 Smith went out to sea for the thrilling TRIANGLE, with Melissa George (The Slap) trapped in a hellish time loop on an abandoned boat, pursued by a hooded figure with a bloody axe. Nightmarish, gripping and intense, TRIANGLE showed Smith exploring uncharted waters with a genre film that engaged the mind, as well as bending it to breaking point. Smith’s hugely enjoyable BLACK DEATH (2010), set in 17th-century plague-ridden England, had a terrific lead performance from the ever-reliable Sean Bean (Possessor), and an early role for future Oscar-winner Eddie Redmayne (The Theory of Everything). It also featured a striking turn from Carice van Houten, that predated her similar forthcoming role in Game of Thrones. After forays into family comedies (Get Santa) and TV series (Alex Rider), Smith comes back to the horror genre this year, with THE BANISHING, a spine-chiller set in Britain’s most haunted house, Borley Rectory, during World War Two. Downton Abbey’s Jessica Brown Findlay is a young woman uncovering dark secrets in her new home, while Sean Harris (Mission: Impossible) is ghost hunter Harry Price, and John Lynch (Isolation) a sinister ‘man of God’. Smith expertly handles this handsomely mounted period mystery, twanging the nerves along the way, with creepy dolls, shadowy figures, religious mania and a couple of proper jolting shocks. THE BANISHING is released on digital platforms from 26th March and will stream on Shudder beginning 15th April. This week we welcome back previous guest of the show writer, director and actor James Kermack to do a deep dive masterclass on how he made his 2nd feature Knuckledust. James was last with us on Episode 21 of the Filmmakers Podcast, talking about his debut feature Hi-Lo Joe, he returns now having moved up significantly in budget to chat to Giles and Robbie about Knuckledust, an action thriller/caper with nods to Guy Ritchie, Quentin Tarantino and Nicolas Winding Refn. We cover everything in this episode from sourcing finance and actors to world-building through script and storyboards. James also appears in the film in a supporting role, so offers some candid advice on how to direct yourself as an actor/director. Knuckledust is an incredibly ambitious film for its budget level, and excels in its visual style. We examine just how James managed to pull it off from script to shoot to edit. Listen to our full talk at the American Film Market for earlier this month with regular hosts Giles Alderson and Ian Sharp joined by writer, director and producer Dan Mazer to discuss filmmaking on both an indie and studio level. Dan talks about his start in the world of film through his writing for television with Sacha Baron Cohen on Da Ali G Show, how from there he got involved with writing and producing the features Ali G Indahouse, Borat and Bruno. Whilst continuing to write further features Bridget Jones’s Baby and Borat Subsequent Moviefilm, Dan has also directed I Give It a Year, Dirty Grandpa and the upcoming Home Alone - the latter of which was filmed during the current pandemic. Ian and Giles compare their experience on the indie side with Dan’s studio work, discussing how they’ve each managed to get their respective projects off the ground, dealing with financiers and maintaining good relationships with studios, as well as fellow producers and directors. Finally, Dan discusses the strategy of releasing Borat Subsequent Moviefilm on Amazon for on-demand viewing, why the decision was taken and how they used the timing of the global pandemic and the US election to their advantage. Giles is joined by regular co-host Lucinda Rhodes Thakrar as they sit down and chat with cult actor Dominic Monaghan to discuss the psychological thriller Pet, a bold, unsettling chamber piece starring Dominic in the lead role of Seth. Dom shares stories of his humble beginnings as an actor in the Manchester youth performance scene, why he got into acting and how he moved from regional theatre to acting on the stage in London to being cast in one of the biggest movie franchises of a generation - but what is the secret to giving off the ‘perfect hobbit vibe’ at a casting call? We hear what it’s like to see Peter Jackson directing, along with the importance of building relationships with your fellow actors on set during a long haul shoot spanning almost 3 years. Finally - do actors need to ‘purge’ past characters they’ve played that are bad for them? And how does one do this? Intro Hi everyone and welcome to Books Between - a podcast for teachers, parents, librarians, and anyone who wants to help connect kids between 8-12 to books they’ll love. I am Corrina Allen - a 5th grade teacher, a mom of two, and spending some rainy summer days with my gals playing Blokus and Canasta and Mario Kart and dreaming of the beach…. This is Episode #30 and today I am sharing with you a conversation with Jillian Heise about Classroom Book A Day. We chat about all the wonderful things that can happen when you read one picture book a day to your class. And yes - even upper elementary AND middle school kids! I had considered holding on to this episode a little longer, but realized that lots of you start school in August and would want to start planning things. If you’re like me, you need some time to mull things over and see how everything’s going to fit together. So before we get started, I want to let you know a couple things up front. First, at the end of the conversation we mention some resources where you can find out lots more information about #ClassroomBookADay - especially Jillian’s main post about it from her website where she so generously shares her slideshows. And the #ClassroomBookADay Facebook Group. I joined that last month and the community there has been extraordinarily helpful. So - if you are interested, I’ll see you there. And I’ll post links to those right in our show notes and on the All the Wonders site. Second - Jillian talks about A LOT of incredible books today and I know that, like me, you’re going to get excited about them and want to jot down all the titles! But - I’ve got your back. Every single title mentioned is posted and linked right in the show notes. Okay - let’s dive in! Main Topic - Interview with Jillian Heise Tell us a little bit about yourself and how you got inspired to start the #ClassroomBookaDay. #ClassroomBookaDay is about making time each day in your classroom to read a picture book. What do you see as the benefit of focusing more on picture books? I’ve seen these incredible displays of teachers’ #ClassroomBookaDay reading where they post a cover of each book on grid on a bulletin board. How do you display the #ClassroomBookADay in your school? How do you see the display of the books as an important of aspect of #ClassroomBookADay? How do you make time to read one picture book every day? What is your routine like for reading the books with your students? What about folks who don’t have their own classroom - librarians, literacy coaches, administrators? 180+ days is a lot to fill! How do you choose titles? What are some of your favorite books for the first week or so of school? Where can people go to get more information? Aside from picture books, what have you been reading lately that you’ve liked? Closing Alright - that wraps up our show this week. If you have a question or an idea about a topic we should cover, I would love to hear from you. You can email me at booksbetween@gmail.com or connect on Twitter/Instagram at the handle @Books_Between. Thank you so much for joining me this week. You can find an outline of interviews and a full transcript of all the other parts of our show along with all of our previous episodes at AlltheWonders.com. And, if you like what you hear and value the podcast, please leave a quick review or rating on iTunes or Stitcher. Thanks again and see you soon! Bye! Welcome to the launch special of the Nerdy Bookcast. Today, on the 15th anniversary of September 11, 2001, we have a generation of students who have no living memory of the events that happened that day. And we have a generation of teachers who do. We are calling it “Books Help Teach Us How to Live.” Thank you for very much for listening to Part 2: “Community and Empathy.” Show notes The Posts It s a Wide World, by Donalyn Miller Before and After 9/11, by Nora Raleigh Baskin The Memory of Things: On a Stark Anniversary, Connecting Students to their History through Story, by Gae Polisner The posts you hear on The Nerdy Bookcast originally appeared on The Nerdy Bookclub.
