Karan Casey  Does Singing Songs Make a Difference? This episode is a recording of Karan Casey's keynote presentation at the close of the conference of the European Music Therapy Confederation in Edinburgh, 8-12 June 2022. Karan talked about songs and social justice, arts practice research, and about her own life and experiences as a performer and campaigner on social issues. She performed a number of songs as part of the presentation, and then had a conversation with Luke Annesley to explore these issues further. It was an inspiring ending to a varied and exciting conference. About Karan: Singing songs charged with a sense of social responsibility in a career spanning over 25 years Karan Casey has released eleven albums as well as contributing to numerous other artists' projects – appearing on more than 50 albums in total. She has toured extensively throughout North America, Europe and Japan, performing with her own band as well as collaborating with such diverse musicians as Maura O'Connell, James Taylor, Bela Fleck, Boston Pops Orchestra, Kate Ellis, Niall Vallely, Pauline Scanlon, The Chieftains, The Dubliners, Peggy Seeger, Karen Matheson, Mick Flannery, Mícheál Ó Súilleabháin, Tim O'Brien, Solas and Lúnasa.  In 2018 Karan helped found FairPlé which is an organization aimed at achieving fairness and gender balance for female performers in Irish traditional and folk musics. Karan tours with her band Niamh Dunne, Sean Óg Graham and Niall Vallely. Karan's most recent album Hieroglyphs That Tell the Tale was released on the Vertical Records Label. Her song “Down in the Glen” was nominated for Best Original Folk Song at the RTE Folk Awards 2019 and she completed a PhD in music in 2019. Karan has recently performed her new show with Director Sophie Motley called I Walked into My Head which was premiered at the Kilkenny Arts Festival 2021. Karan is currently working on a new stage show to be produced at the Everyman Theatre in Cork in early 2023 as well as an album of new songs about women in the Irish revolutionary period. Please note: As we are awaiting permission to include the performance of 'The King's Shilling' in this episode, here is a YouTube link to Karan's studio version of the song. Reviews of Karan's music: "Karan Casey's latest album is revelatory. She's always been a singer of songs that tell a story and show their muscle…This is a strikingly three-dimensional work that stands the test of intensive and repeated listening with ease. A vivid and dazzling snapshot of Casey invincible, at the height of her powers.” Siobhán Long, Irish Times   “Casey's voice is among the loveliest in folk music and she's a wonderful interpreter of both contemporary and traditional material.” BOSTON GLOBE   “Karan Casey's latest solo venture is a thing of rare beauty.” SING OUT   "The most soulful singer to emerge in Irish traditional music in the past decade." THE GLASGOW HERALD   “If ever any doubt existed about who's the best Irish traditional woman singer today, "Exiles Return" sweeps aside all pretenders…Karan Casey has no vocal peer.” IRISH ECHO   Songs Siúil a Rúin (trad.) Don't hire with any master till you know what your work will be You will rise up early from the clear day light till the dawn and you never will be able for to plough the Rocks of Bawn.   Rise up, gallant Sweeney, and give your horse some hay And give them a good feed of oats before they stray away Don't feed them on soft turnip put them out on your green lawn Or they never will be able for to plough the Rocks of Bawn.   My curse upon you, Sweeney boy, you have me nearly robbed You're sitting by the fireside with your dúidín in your gob You're sitting by the fireside now from clear daylight till the dawn And you never will be able for to plough the Rocks of Bawn   My shoes they are worn and my stockings they are thin My heart is always trembling for fear they might give in My heart is always trembling from the clear daylight till the dawn And I never will be able for to plough the Rocks of Bawn.   I wish the Queen of England she would call for me in time And place me in some regiment all in my youth and prime I'd fight for Ireland's glory from the clear daylight till dawn And I never would return again to plough the Rocks of Bawn.     Ballad of Accounting   In the morning we built the city In the afternoon walked through its streets Evening saw us leaving We wandered through our days as if they would never e All of us imagined we had endless time to spend We hardly saw the crossroads And small attention gave To landmarks on the journey from the cradle to the grave, cradle to the grave, cradle to the grave   Did you learn to dream in the morning? Abandon dreams in the afternoon? Wait without hope in the evening? Did you stand there in the traces and let them feed you lies? Did you trail along behind them wearing blinkers on your eyes? Did you kiss the foot that kicked you? Did you thank them for their scorn? Did you ask for their forgiveness for the act of being born, act of being born, act of being born?   Did you alter the face of the city? Did you make any change in the world you found? Or did you observe all the warnings? Did you read the trespass notices did you keep off the grass? Did you shuffle off the pavement just to let your betters pass? Did you learn to keep your mouth shut, Were you seen and never heard? Did you learn to be obedient and jump to at a word, jump to at a word, jump to at a word?   Did you ever demand any answers? The who, the what or the reason why? Did you ever question the setup? Did you stand aside and let them choose while you took second best? Did you let them skim the cream off and then give to you the rest? Did you settle for the shoddy? Did you think it right To let them rob you right and left and never make a fight, never make a fight, never make a fight?   What did you learn in the morning? How much did you know in the afternoon? Were you content in the evening? Did they teach you how to question when you were at the school? Did the factory help you grow, were you the maker or the tool? Did the place where you were living Enrich your life and then Did you reach some understanding of all your fellow men, all your fellow men, all your fellow men?     I'm Still Standing Here   See these lines upon my face They're a map of where I've been In the deep they are traced a deeper life has settled in How do we survive living out our lives   I wouldn't trade a line make it smooth or fine Or pretend that time stands still I want to rest my soul here where it can grow without fear Another line another year I'm still standing here   See these marks upon my skin They're the lyric of my life Every story that begins Means another ends in sight Only lover's understand Skin just covers who I am   I wouldn't trade a line make it smooth or fine Or pretend that time stands still I want to rest my soul here where it can grow without fear Another line another year I'm still standing here   See these bruises see these scars Hieroglyphs that tell the tale You can read them in the dark Through your fingertips like braille   I wouldn't trade a line make it smooth or fine Or pretend that time stands still I want to rest my soul here where it can grow without fear Another line another year I'm still standing here

Selcouth means, “when everything is strange and different, yet you find it marvelous anyway.” The album is not completely Celtic and it's not just science fiction and fantasy. Thank you for all you do for Celtic music.Just letting you know Highlander  -  Celtic Rock Band Australia have just released a new album called “Start The Fire” I believe it is able to be heard on both Spotify and also on Youtube." Rey Glunt emailed: "Hey Marc!! Just want to let you know first of all that I love the show!! I walk our dog a lot and it's about all I listen to on our strolls. My dads side of the family is predominantly Scottish and my moms side is all Irish so the Celtic blood runs deep in me. I love so much variety it's hard to mail it down to five favorites but I'll do my best and in no particular order. Cherish The Ladies, Across The Pond, The Pogues, The Cheiftains, and The Dubliners. I also help a friend of mine with his entertainment company, Shenanigator Entertainment. It gives me a chance to be behind the scenes to promote Celtic music and help out at festivals and concerts."

Karen Matheson is a Master & Certified Hypnotherapist, Regression Therapist and a Psychosomatic Therapist,  having had three death experience this gives her an interesting prospective on why we are here and what this journey is all about. So what are you doing in the “Name of Love”? Your actions towards others are is sure sign of where your heart is. What is it that you believe about Love? Historically we have seen much violence, abuse and hatred being spread in the name of love of a cause or of our belief systems and even what should be sacred love. So what do you do in the name of love? How do you express love in the world? What do you do when faced with the harshness of what is happening around you? We witness every day the conflict stirring in the world where our actions are not coming from a place of love. So how do we shift that experience? What would it take to let go of those emotions that pull you away from an open heart? With the obvious outbursts of a few, does it give us an opportunity to heal and send love out to the world! Is that the “for the greater good” concept in action? If you could do anything in the ‘Name of Love' what would it be!? uwriteme@soletosoul.ca www.soletosoul.ca https://www.facebook.com/SoletoSoulWellness

Is there such a thing as living a balanced life? What does Living in Balance look like? Work, Family and Life telling us that we need to give more but rarely do hear take time to recharge, let me get that for you….until it is too late. I have come to realize that people are raised to be givers or takers, rarely is there a balance. So how do we reprogram ourselves to be balanced before we crash and burn out. Guilt, shame and blame are powerful tools used to manipulate someone into giving when truthfully they are already out of balance. How do we support each other in recovery!? Karen will discuss the how to work through steps to reclaim your life and to let your experience be self-fulfilling. Perhaps the questions of self preservation is: “How have I served myself today” Is it time to fill up your tank so that you can master your experience? As Karen works with her client healing from abuse trauma, the steps for rebuilding a healthy balance of Love, Sex and Spirituality has been an incredible journey of self-discovery and healing for her clients as they look at beliefs, and falsehoods. Love, Sex and Spirituality can we have one without the others and if so are we cheating ourselves out of the wholeness of the experience? Love is a state of being, Sex the Physical act and Spirituality is the glue that holds it all together. What have you told yourself that you have to do to be loved, how do you compromise yourself for the get the Love Cookie. The Truth is nothing – that is if what you are looking for is Unconditional Love. Sex is sometimes confused with Love. If you perform the deed that is equals being loved for some people and in that confusion many people get hurt. If you add the Spirituality into the mix you bring, your moral and ethical code into which if you are coming from a health state of being would include respect, honor and trust. Each and every person will have a day that they awaken into their Spiritual truth…..the question will then be; are you willing to stand up for the truth even if it meant going against everything you knew to be true up to that point. There are many teaching in the world about Moral and ethical codes what does that mean? Image the shock that Karen had when she was shown the “things” she had agreed to do while in this life. And then the relief that came with knowing that some of the most traumatic things were part of the plan for Spiritual growth. In the resent weeks there has been a flood of people questioning their existence and more importantly the last day and what that would look like. Karen's experience of the other-side will allow for some interesting discussion. How does Karma play out; the theme of what you give is what you get. Is Karma obsolete? No longer waiting life times for Karma to come around, are we witnessing it coming back in real time. Perhaps the one with the most toys at the end of this life journey does not WIN after all. Have we confused the teaching? What if you woke up tomorrow and you found out that what you have been told about religion was “incorrect” lost in translation if you will. In discussion there has been a lot of fear expressed in what happens when you review your life, especially if your life choices have been less than admirable. Fear of judgment day if you will. The First question that came to mind; if you believed that there would be a ‘Judgment day' then why have you lived your life the way you did. If you can tap into those emotions and ask consciously as to what triggered your emotional response and why you are sensitive to the experience it is the first steps to healing. What would it look like if you lived your life in Neutral? Karen is not suggesting you become emotionless but rather be in control of the situations instead. So what would that look like? Well, if there are any listeners that cannot move past a trigger call in and Karen will show you how it works. Moving through the emotion is not enough it is what the experience triggered in your belief system that is important – it is like the root to the weed if you will. If RANTING is happening than you are looking for validation to your experience. Looking within yourself is something that most people have a hard time doing. Understanding that the steps of Grounding, Clearing and Protecting yourself will be one of the most powerful tools as you step forward into 2013. Karen will talk about the Why's & How's to these steps. You may have already felt the increased energy around you over the past few weeks, perhaps being overwhelmed with emotions that are not even yours. Watching for the signs of being overwhelmed or overloaded is imperative to keeping yourself balanced and healthy. The three steps are important individually but more importantly they must each be done consciously. The three steps provide a layered effect to your experience. Who needs to do these step you might be thinking, the answer is everyone but especially those who are of service- the front liners in healing work both Holistic and Allopathic Practioners, alike. Teaching Children to do these steps will help them through the shift. Hyperactive people will need to practice this technique to stay functional. Let us not forget, the power of being out in Mother Nature, when adding these three techniques while out or on your walk will potentially increase the effectiveness by almost double. Safety is always important, ensuring if you are walking ensure it is in a place where you are not subject to harm such as busy streets, roadways, steep embankments or operating a vehicle, just sitting is perhaps best when you first start this as this can be very hypnotic for some people. uwriteme@soletosoul.ca www.soletosoul.ca https://www.facebook.com/SoletoSoulWellness

Karen will be recapping some of the 12-12-12 conversation from last week, as we reflect on what has happened in the world. How Judgement and fear are being Hightened, emotions are running high. Is this any different from what has been happening prior or are we just becoming more hightened to the experiences? Have Our actions changed or has the resistance to the actions changed? If we were once numb are we now just reconnecting to it, IS that the Awakening of Consciousness that was spoken of? What have you noticed in your life, what action or behavior have you become aware of? What Changes have you had or are you unsure of what that looks like? Are you more compassionate, loving, Tolerant or are you perhaps more angry, judgemental or fearful? What do you relationships look like? Are they supportive or destructive? What Values are you struggling with, which ones are Supporting your choices? Asking Yourself: Who are you IN this experience will define the outcome. uwriteme@soletosoul.ca www.soletosoul.ca https://www.facebook.com/SoletoSoulWellness

As we move into the Conscious REMEMBERANCE of why we are here 12.12.12, it still amazes me as to how people still are so afraid of their Power. The Connection to the Christ Consciousness will to being all that we are meant to be. So Why now? Like any good parent are we being asked to REFOCUS? What will happen when the truth is revived as to WHY we have come into this experience? The effects of resistance will carry a toll, health issues, and mental strain to mention a few. What happens to those who have not done their spiritual work? Will the reality of your purpose be too much for those to handle. Imagine, incredible serge of energy flowing through a faulty wiring system what will blow? With the impact be so great that many will not be able to handle it? What fears sit between you and your greatness? If you had two choices – shift or be shifted which would you choose? This is not be create fear it is to instill Awareness – you are not a victim to the experience. What have you left unresolved? What Secrets are you protecting? If every negative thing – every Low Vibrational Experience that has gone unfinished was placed in front of you right now and we give a choice to heal it or accept responsibility what would you do? The Spiritual Growth experience IS part of your reason for being here. Accountability for your actions – have you evolved as a SOUL CONSCIOUSNESS?! The “question” that each of us will be asked is: WHO WHERE YOU IN IT?! That is the only truth that will matter. uwriteme@soletosoul.ca www.soletosoul.ca https://www.facebook.com/SoletoSoulWellness

Feeling Separate from the Experience, Feeling Left Behind, Reconnect to YOU and the Rest will follow! There has been much discussion over that past few weeks about people feeling separate. My initial response is what is it that you feel separate from? A disconnect of many from where they belong, relationships are shifting their need to be subjects to toxic connections has driven people to the solitude of their inner selves. What is it that you are feeling, experiencing and doing that is putting you into seclusion? How do you want to define yourself? Many are concerned about the Mayan experience around December 21, 2012. Are you concerned, afraid or confused? Let's explore the experience: What I have received as a knowing about this, the illusion of time will end, there will no longer “I will do it later” we are moving into the NOW! Everything you chose to do will take you to the next step, failing to take action is what will limit you. The reconnection to the “Creator” energy will be reestablished. What does that mean? When you receive this insight you will have to make changes and step back into your powerful self. What would happen if the veil of deceit was ripped from our experience and you stepped fully into consciousness! What if I told you that you could have or create whatever you want….are you willing to take on that much power and accountability for your experience? What that means and how Businesses will benefit from this shift.? Benefits of Integrating the New Way of Working….the new way of thinking to bring all of you to work would allow for staffers to be creative, to have a voice which adds value to their experience, to bring in new concepts and prospective twenty minds are more powerful than one. Bringing in the Four Concepts of Self to create Success: PEMS Factor Physical: The concept of Physically showing up for your Job is done by creating a want and need to be there. Emotional (passion): To Bring in your Passion and Experiences to the job makes it exciting and there is ownership. Mental (Ideas): Imagine the knowledge that is sitting in just one office now multiply that by the number of people in the office – How much information leaves each day untapped. Spiritual (Morals and Ethics) Selves: Would you purchase from a company that is immoral, Unethical or treats its staff shamefully?  Selling your company concept will be easy when people are engaged spiritually because they are supporting the moral and ethics which create safety. A lot of companies shout ‘TEAM' and then run the office has a hierarchy, the pyramid concept. To shift the concept means you give value to your staff resulting in ownership and pride in their work. What would the management fear if these concepts were implemented? What if any power is take from them? Clearing the fear to strengthen the TEAM for success is easy or is it!? Working from Acceptance….Empower Your-Self to Be Amazing! Your life is exactly the way it is suppose to be – until “YOU” decide you want something “Different”! Each experience you have had makes you who you are! If you want to be someone different do something different! If all the negative things you have experienced have just been a teaching for your “Greatness” would it be easier to work from Acceptance? Would the blame game lose its power over you!? Would it eliminate the “Victim” program you are running your life on? Is it time to start manifesting what you “want”? Imagine if you took all that energy you focused on what you don't want into what you “DO” want. Are you ready for your Power to return? If so, stop attacking those who have honored and worked from their power – take some notes instead. See how those people work. Ask yourself – is their energy spent shaming, blaming or sabotaging others or is their energy spent on what to do next to get what they want? Where does your fear come when you go into sabotage? What is it that you hear in your head? Let's talk: If you are stuck – let's chat – I will be taking calls today and hopefully let you see outside of your block…… www.soletosoul.ca uwriteme@soletosoul.ca https://www.facebook.com/SoletoSoulWellness

Putting this God and Religion Conflict to Rest: A Message from the Masters! There are continued studies and experiments done to prove or disprove this subject the reality is YOU are here, get over it! Let us put it as simply as we can….Each of you has a purpose, each of you has a right to live and experience this life as you chose – which means “Your” opinion of how another chooses to live their live wasted energy! The Gift of being here has been wasted on worrying about what someone else is doing. How much of your day is wasted on worrying about someone else's choices or actions. If you believe in GOD that you should also believe in Divine Justice, leave the judgment and punishment to GOD. Yes, there is a moral code of justice – if someone is harming another there is an obligation of action. What that means is there social consciousness to your journey – perhaps even a Soul Contract. Soul contracts are agreements contracted prior to the Life Journey you have chosen. Before thinking your GOD is Bigger, Better or Stronger than someone else's God – ask yourself this question – if you had been born into a family or country other than the one you have now- would not your life be different? Would you pray to a God different to yours? Would the Name you called your God be different: Buddha, Alia, Krishna, God or something else? Then go back into the question and ask – “What” am I to learn from this experience? “Who” do I chose to be in it? That IS Your Purpose!   www.soletosoul.ca uwriteme@soletosoul.ca https://www.facebook.com/SoletoSoulWellness

Living life as an Intuitive I have to say was my Normal so telling you how it is different from the way you lived yours might be difficult. Let's start with the fact – I did not come back after my death experience with a Memo: “Karen, you are now an Intuitive.” Instead I gradually became aware that I could sense, feel, hear and see things. Because my first death experience was at Eight years old, truthfully my eight years prior perhaps were not lived at that level of consciousness. So what happened when you get information that is greater than your years of teaching? How do people respond to the knowledge? Religion Vs Intuitiveness. What does it feel like to be tapped into that Knowledge or Knowing? How do you Trust the information? How did things change when I got labeled as an Intuitive? Energy Healing, What Is It?

Energy Healing, What Is It? Remember in science class we were told everything is energy? Sounded simple, chemistry where we were taught that everything had a chemical makeup and that needed bonding of molecules & atoms to create a molecular substance. So are humans energy, do we have a specific molecular make up? What happens when that energy is messed with the foods we eat, air we breathe, water we drink and thoughts we think? Why does one person get sick and anther one does not? How does energy healing work to rebalance the body? When I had my death experience I experienced the difference of Physical Mass body and the Energy body. My physical body did not work without my energy body it could not communicate, move or breathe without the energy body presents. I as an energy body, I had thoughts, feelings and consciousness. I communicated with the energy body of my Grandfather but could not communicate with the physical beings, as I no longer communicated in a frequency that they could hear. I came back into the physical body, I remembered how to communicate to the energy body (spirit) and sense the energy bodies of others. I could sense when someone was out of balance. Unfortunately I did not get the manual as to how to master it instead I was guided to teachers in the physical that assisted me in understanding and working with the energy body as it lay within the physical body. I learn to sense, run and manipulate energy to allow the body to rebalance, when the energy body is balance it will heal the physical at least that is what I was told.  During my third death experience I was told upon returning I would help heal people emotionally through the physically body.My purpose was clear the question became was the world ready for this truth? www.soletosoul.ca uwriteme@soletosoul.ca
