This week on Queer News with Anna DeShawn — we're talking legal wins and loses, representation on-screen, and unmatched excellence on the basketball court. A U.S. federal appeals court deals a blow to Trump's anti-trans military ban, affirming the right of our trans siblings to serve with pride. But across the pond, the UK Supreme Court drops a devastating ruling stripping trans people of legal recognition. In culture, we lift up the groundbreaking TLC show Jay & Pamela — a love story breaking barriers around disability, queerness, and visibility. We mourn the cancellation of Clean Slate, Laverne Cox's bold sitcom, and celebrate WNBA icon Candace Parker as the LA Sparks announce her jersey retirement this Pride Month. And to close, we honor Black lesbian poet Pat Parker for Lesbian Visibility Week with her searing classic, my lover is a woman. This episode is a ride through pain, pride, power — and the poetry that keeps us grounded. Let's get into it, family.

It's Lesbian Visibillity week, where we take a look at some of the most wonderful women who have shaped Feast of Fun over the course of 20 years. Just like no two people are alike, the relationships we develop in our lives will also be incredibly unique. Before open relationships became more acceptable in LGBTQ+ circles, sex-positive writer Tristan Taormino was helping pave the way for people to expand their minds to new kinds of relationships. We spoke to Tristan in 2008 about her new book “Opening Up: A Guide to Creating and Sustaining Open Relationships” where she said a big factor in fufilling relationships was for people to defnine monogamy on their own terms, and that the best relationships complement each other instead of trying to meet each other halfway in everything. Please enjoy this encore presentation of “Ménage à How Many?” with Tristan Taormino as part of our celebration of Lesbian Visibility Week and the design I made that became the modern lesbian pride flag. Get ready to dive deep into the history of lesbian love stories and explore what it meant to express queer female love before the word "lesbian" even existed. Amelia starts with the mythos behind Sappho, an ancient Greek poet who is known for her queer female love poetry! Then Amelia explores the history of queer women like Gloria Anzaldua, Virginia Woolf, and Mabel Hampton. She explains that encountering these stories helped her understand how these women were embracing a politics of care and love that existed outside of capitalism. Their stories reveal how capitalism has excluded queer bodies and queer stories since they exist outside of patriarchal systems of oppression. You'll learn a lot from Amelia about how these lesbian ancestors and even Walt Whitman's democratic spirit helped her envision what a caring and inclusive democracy actually looks like. And why did a few gay men on her swim team make her want to look underneath the surface of lesbian romance? To celebrate Lesbian Visibility Week, The Wisconsin LGBTQ History Project created a free lesbian history exhibit as well as hosting other events in the Milwaukee area.
To celebrate Lesbian Visibility Week 2024 (happening from 22-28 April), two of our Proud Changemakers - Paige Hughes (she/her) and Lucy Straker (she/they) are bringing to you an episode all about lesbians. So that's the word lesbian, how it came to be (looking at lesbian history from Sappho, to Anne Lister through to Ellen DeGeneres and beyond), what being gay/a lesbian means to us and what we've learnt and experienced along the way. We aim to be educational, spicy and humorous - plus throw in a few mic drop moments too. We do discuss our personal experiences, different types of lesbian pop culture and the tensions within the LGBTQIA+ community. Please note that Proud Changemakers is a trans inclusive organisation and always will be. Trigger warning - there are a couple of references to a gender based attack but no details are shared. "Lesbian identity is strong and activist orientated. At it's heart it's inclusive, radical and anti-patriarchy. I think it's pretty beautiful." Paige Hughes (she/her) Paige is a strategist and consultant for charities, placemakers and small businesses. She has 10+ years of experience in business development, marketing and communications. Paige has a degree in Politics from the University of Leeds, and an MSc in Place Management and Leadership, delivered by the Institute of Place Management at Manchester Metropolitan University, Until recently, Paige was the Head of Business Development and Engagement for national membership organisation, CharityComms and now works freelance with charities, place-makers and small business owners, balancing strategic consultancy, creative coaching and hands-on delivery. See her website here. Paige has had multiple volunteering roles, including a Trustee for a charity that supports people with Autism, mentorship and coaching for young professionals, a group lead at an LGBTQ charity, and has been a national EDI lead. "I have negative connotations with the word lesbian as it has regularly been used in a derogatory way towards me. So I have always had a stronger connection to the word gay so that's the one I use to describe myself." Lucy Straker (she/they) Lucy is the Campaigns Manager for Brake, the road safety charity. Here Lucy leads on the charity's national campaigns which can include calling for new legislation to support all road users, raising public awareness of road dangers or advocating for road crash victims. Lucy is also a public speaker and trainer on creating inclusive workplaces specifically regarding the LGBTQIA+ community. Lucy has co-founded and led a number of inclusion networks and activism groups across the voluntary sector during their 17 years of communications and campaigning work in the sector. What are your thoughts around the word lesbian, its culture, identity etc? Reach out, get in touch - and you could be on our next lesbian pod! https://linktr.ee/proudchangemakers Music was by Vitaliy Levkin from Pixabay
It's Lesbian Visibility week, where we take a look at some of the most wonderful women who have shaped Feast of Fun over the course of 20 years. One of my all time favorite musicians is blues singer Gaye Adegbalola. We first met Gaye back in 2005 at the Out Music Awards where she wowed the crowd with her audacious song “Big Ovaries” looking absolutely stunning wearing a white tuxedo with tails that complimented her silver shock of hair and dark skin.Gaye is not your ordinary blues musician, like us she has a sharp sense of humor and passion for restorative justice. An evening with Gaye Adegbalola always proves to be filled with exciting music and a whole lot of fun.Back in 2009 we had the pleasure of having Gaye in the home studio to perform several of her iconic songs, she was in Chicago for a concert at the Old Town School of Folk Music where she and her musical collaborators Ann Rabson and Andra Faye in Saffire performed together one last time. Please enjoy this encore presentation of “The Legendary Gaye Adegbalola” as part of our celebration of Lesbian Visibility Week and the design I made that became the modern lesbian pride flag. "You can't win a championship without gays!" - a quote uttered by Megan Rapinoe at the World Cup in France in 2019 that has already passed into women's football folklore. Two years later, the simple tweet "they're lesbians, Stacey" under a picture of Sam Kerr and Kristie Mewis at the Tokyo Olympics quickly took on legendary status, becoming a T-shirt slogan, catchphrase and much-loved meme. You might think therefore that Lesbian Visibility Week - held annually around Lesbian Visibility Day at the end of April - would be well supported by the women's game, as a chance to recognise inspirational LGBTQ+ role models on and off the field. But there has been barely any LVW messaging around the professional game, or from sponsors and influencers, or in the media, and not much mention on social media either, even though the awareness week is now well established. For this episode of the FvH Podcast, we explore the many reasons behind that. Sports reporter Beth Fisher and FvH campaign director Lou Englefield are the guests, joining regular host, Sports Media LGBT+'s Jon Holmes. Stereotypes, tensions, urban myths, lesbophobia, nervousness around language and the complexities of being visible… they're all factors that feature in a wide-ranging conversation. Show your support for FvH! Activate the campaign in your football space - just head to footballvhomophobia.com for info, downloads and resources, and how to contact the FvH team. It's Lesbian Visibility Week... Who is she, and why does she have a visibility problem? Monique Wittig warned us: "Beware of dispersal." Funny how much content has landed this week from lesbians saying they're "not like other" lesbians. Lily Cooney (@lilycooneywriter on Instagram) returns to the pod to tackle the age-old question: what's so invisible about lesbians? And, the rather newer question: why are we finding ever-more-creative excuses to disperse? Happy Lesbian Visibility Week! We're so happy to be back talking all things compulsory heterosexuality and realising you're a lesbian and we're joined by the most (!) guests we've ever had to hear about their experiences. We start the episode discussing Adrienne Rich's theory of compulsory heterosexuality, the lesbian masterdoc and how it can help you if you're wondering how to know if you're a lesbian, bisexual, pansexual or it's just compulsory heterosexuality. We tell our own experiences unpacking whether we really like men before welcoming Dani, Emily and Cassie to discuss their experiences realising they were into women. They tell us what it was like to come to terms with being gay in their own time, from their first ‘I think I'm a lesbian' to then coming out to friends and family and whether that was a difficult experience or not. They unpack how they feel about their sexuality now, whether people in their lives responded well and how they unlearned compulsory heterosexuality, plus the difficult distinction between being bisexual or suffering from the affliction of compulsory heterosexuality. We also discuss: learning you're lesbian through Orange is the New Black (a surprisingly common experience), not telling your dad you're gay (another common one), how to ‘look' lesbian (if there's really a way), the importance of representation and what they'd tell themselves as baby gays. Thank you so much to Dani, Emily and Cassie for joining us in probably the most chaotic episode to record and edit we've ever done.Apologies to you, our lovely listeners, if the sound is dodgy at times (we tried our best but guess what?! after three years we still don't know how to record!!) but, thanks to our guests, this episode is really an excellent one to listen to if you're at all questioning your sexuality. Have an amazing Lesbian Visibility Week 2023 and we will be back very soon with another episode. As always if you have anything you'd like to share with us or any questions, you can do so on our website, on TikTok, Instagram or Facebook @sextraspodcast or email us at sextraspodcast@gmail.com. For many LGBTQ+ people, finding a space where you can meet fellow members of the community can be incredibly liberating and powerful. Going to a place where you can socialise with those with shared life-experiences can be so fulfilling, especially when many LGBTQ+ people have to balance their authentic identity within a straight-leaning society. For Polly Shute and Peach Bond, this is the foundation of their work in providing safe spaces to lesbians, queer women and non-binary folk across the UK. As part of ITV's coverage of Lesbian Visibility Week 2023 (24th-30th April), Polly and Peach join ITV Pride Co-Chair, Jo Lewis, to discuss the need for more varied spaces for LGBTQ+ women and non-binary people and the importance of Lesbian Visibility Week itself. The annual event run by Diva and Stonewall recognises, celebrates and supports LGBTQ+ women and non-binary people, including those from other under-represented groups, such as black and ethnic minorities, those from a religious background, or those who have a disability or are neurodiverse. The term lesbian refers to a woman who has a romantic and/or sexual orientation towards women. Some non-binary people may also identify with this term. LVW celebrates all those that may identify in this way; such as lesbian, bisexual, pansexual, transgender, non-binary, queer, intersex and asexual individuals. On this episode of the ITV Pridecast Polly and Peach tell Jo about their personal journeys into the LGBTQ+ community and why they spend an incredible amount of their free time helping to create spaces for all marginalised groups within the LGBTQ+ community. They also chat about the importance of feeling visible both in and out of the workplace and what lesbian and queer women want to see more of when it comes to representation and safe, inclusive spaces.Polly's Out & About Community has an outreach of around 15,000 people across various digital channels, creating and curating day, evening and extended weekend events and experiences across the UK. Out & About covers a range of events, such as the monthly 200-person Southbank Surfing social, which takes place in London and Manchester. Another event being the Out & Wild Festival which is held in Wales and is the UK's only Wellness and Experience festival. Similarly, Peach's social group, Lesbian & Queer Women (LQW) spans the UK, covering London, Kent, The Midlands, Liverpool, Leeds, Manchester, Newcastle and Sunderland. LQW has attendees of all ages, some of which join online from overseas. With various digital platforms, Meet Up groups and a mailing list, LQW reaches over 13,000 lesbian, queer and non-binary individuals. LQW runs a whole host of meet ups and social events varying in size, including group weekend breaks to different cities, gallery trips, meals out, nights out, walks and summertime picnics.Links to the groups that Polly and Peach mention in this Pridecast episode:-Out and wild: https://outandwild.co.uk/-Southbank Surfing: https://www.facebook.com/groups/southbanksurfing/?locale=en_GB -Out and about community: https://www.facebook.com/groups/www.beoutandabout.co.uk/ -LQW: www.wearelqw.com-London Lesbians and Queer Womxn MeetUp group:https://www.meetup.com/wearelqw-london/ -Manchester, Liverpool and Leeds Lesbians & Queer Womxnhttps://www.meetup.com/mlllqwomxn/-The Midlands Lesbians and Queer Womxnhttps://www.meetup.com/tmlqwomxn/

We're capping off a fantastic Pride Month with the publisher of DIVA, the world's largest LGBTQIA+ magazine for female-identifying and non-binary people! DIVA has been around since 1994, but Linda Riley became the title's first ever lesbian owner in 2015. She shares the story of how she came out to her mother at fifteen and was offered the choice of "psychiatry" (aka electroshock therapy), or leaving home. Linda promptly left home and school, and what followed were years of her finding and building her queer community; not only in her native London, but also in San Francisco during the AIDS crisis. She describes how activism was intertwined with queer social life in the '80s, and how she ultimately ended up in the magazine industry. Plus, Linda talks trans allyship, founding Lesbian Visibility Week, and her Twitter beef with JK Rowling!Follow DIVA on Twitter and Instagram at @divamagazine, and follow Linda individually on Instagram at @diversityriley, and on Twitter at @lindariley8 (where you can help her fight any future Twitter battles!). Also, as Linda mentioned, DIVA will soon be changing over to a new URL, but for now, check them out and subscribe at https://divamag.co.uk/!
Ki Griffin is an actor, DJ and LGBTIQA+ activist. He made queerstory when he became the first intersex and non-binary actor to join the cast of Hollyoaks as Ripley Lennox.Talking to DIVA magazine's staff writer Nic Crosara, Ki discusses intersectionality, authentic casting and his work with Intersex Equality Rights UK."You can't be, what you don't see."This conversation took place shortly after this year's Lesbian Visibility Week and Ki opens up about finally being able to embrace his lesbian identity as a non-binary intersex person.Edited by Nic CrosaraProduced by Rachel Shelley, with love and support from #TeamDIVApodDIVA: Queers for your EarsWherever you are in the world.Get in touch: editorial@divamag.co.uk Our GDPR privacy policy was updated on August 8, 2022. Daring to be different in celebration of Pride month, I chat with Linda Riley, a journalist and LGBT+ rights advocate. She is the publisher of the Diva magazine and founder of the very successful Lesbian Visibility Week. She was joint publisher of the magazines g3 and Out in the City, founded the Global Diversity List, European Diversity Awards, and the Pride Power List, and a former board director of GLAAD. Welcome to the Sam Grierson interview series, chatting to change makers who have Dared to Be Different and stand up and speak out. We discuss social change that has occurred over the last 30 years, how language has evolved and is evolving and how we still have more work to do. I am interested to look at the role that the Arts play, to both inspire, provoke, educate and support social change. The InterPride podcast series, InterPod, is proud to launch our 15th Special episode, Lesbian Visibility Week: Pat Tietgens and Michelle Zhang. The LGBTQIA+ community has come a long way in the fight for acceptance. Our voices matter and will be heard. Many of our LGBTQIA+ community members have fought for decades for the right to be seen and heard. Pat Tietgens and Michelle Zhang share their love story as a lesbian Chinese American immigrant couple. Michelle Zhang was born and raised in China, where she practiced law for nearly ten years. Michelle met her American wife Pat at a lesbian bar in Southwest China in 2012. Pat Tietgens was born and raised in San Jose, California, and she worked for the University of Washington in China, where she lived for nearly seven years. Michelle and Pat share a passion for cross-border and cross-cultural LGBTQ advocacy and community work. Thanks to marriage equality in the US, they were legally married in San Francisco in 2016. Before leaving China, they held a uniquely open wedding ceremony to help raise awareness, and 150,000 people watched live across mainland China. This bold decision was the subject of multiple articles and a short film that reached over 5 million viewers in China. Michelle continues her passion for representation and belonging as the founder of a nonprofit called Society of Heart's Delight. Pat serves on the LGBTQ PAC Bay Area Municipal Elections Committee board. Michelle and Pat are small business owners who run an event/consulting business in the Bay Area. We have a very special guest for this episode of the pod - singer-songwriter-producer Shura drops in for a chat, as Lesbian Visibility Week 2022 draws to a close. Shura's fans will be very familiar with the role that football has played in her life and career to date. She was part of the Manchester City youth set-up as a teenager before she started recording music at the age of 16 and followed that path instead. She began to rise to fame in 2014 when her song ‘Touch' picked up industry buzz, with her debut album ‘Nothing's Real' following in 2016 - it went Top 20 in the UK album charts. Shura's second album ‘Forevher' followed three years later, further building her fanbase, and her songs have been streamed millions of times on Spotify and YouTube. At the moment, ‘What's it Gonna Be?' can be heard in Netflix smash Heartstopper and is picking up loads of plays and downloads! She started playing football with Goal Diggers FC in London a couple of years ago, and during the pandemic she got into Twitch and Discord streaming, creating her own Shutopia community online. Speaking to Sports Media LGBT+'s Jon Holmes, Shura discusses how she got her break in football as a young girl; the ups and downs of supporting Manchester United men and Arsenal Women; what she makes of Heartstopper; the importance of her Goal Diggers FC family; some of the good and not-so-good aspects of being an out lesbian in both music and football environments; the fun of Twitch streaming, particularly when she's doing cosplay; and what she's working on right now. Being seen and accepted for who we are is what makes us human. It's something that LGBTQI people have to continuously fight for and for Linda Riley it's been a life's work. She's been acutely aware of the need for visibility within the LGBTQI community and especially for LGBTQI women and non-binary people. Linda has spent a great deal of time raising the profile of members of the community through her work as the publisher of DIVA Magazine, as well as being the founder of Lesbian Visibility Week. The week, which this year is taking place between 25th April-1st May, aims to celebrate lesbians and create solidarity for all LGBTQI women and non binary people. Lesbian Visibility Day was first celebrated in 2008, but since 2020 a week of events and activities have taken place to mark the occasion. In this ITV Pridecast Liam is joined by Jo Lewis to co-host the episode. Jo works as a Production Manager for MultiStory Media and is also one of the Co-chairs of the ITV Pride Network. She was also interviewed in her own ITV Pridecast episode last year, called Finding your own people. In the episode with Linda they chat about why Lesbian Visibility Week is so important and why having a space for LGBTQI people to connect and learn about one another's experiences is essential. Linda also reflects on how her own experiences have helped shape her work at DIVA and why strides are still needed in the progress for LGBTQI rights. She also chats about being a mother to 15-year-old twins, who are entering a world that is much more accepting of same-sex parents than a decade or so ago.More information on...-Lesbian Visibility Week: https://www.lesbianvisibilityweek.com/-DIVA Magazine: https://divamag.co.uk/
