Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for May 30, 2025 is: gust GUST noun Gust refers to a sudden strong wind. It is also used figuratively for a sudden outburst of something, such as a feeling. // Today's weather will be windy, with gusts of up to 40 miles per hour. See the entry > Examples: “This subversive comedy is now a posh panto, directed by Max Webster. It gets gusts of laughter but can feel rather forced, and the joyous language is left to fend for itself.” — Robert Gore-Langton, The Mail on Sunday (London), 8 Dec. 2024 Did you know? You're no doubt familiar with the breezy gust meaning “a brief burst of wind.” But about a century and a half before that word first appeared in print in the late 16th century, a different gust blew onto the scene. The windy gust likely comes from a synonymous Old Norse word, gustr, whereas the older gust, which refers to the sensation of taste as well as to a feeling of enthusiastic delight, comes ultimately from gustus, the Latin word for “taste.” English speakers eventually mostly dropped that older gust, replacing it in the early 17th century with a similar gustus word borrowed from Italian: gusto is now the go-to word when you want to refer to enthusiastic and vigorous enjoyment or appreciation. You can use it with gusto.
This weekend, you can catch a recording of the Donmar Warehouse production of Macbeth starring David Tennant and Cush Jumbo, directed by Max Webster. In this episode of the podcast, Alex discusses why this production is a must-see and why you should make time for it now and for recorded Shakespeare more generally. The best time to watch Shakespeare is when it's fresh. You learn something new from every Shakespeare production you see. Watching a bunch of productions of a Shakespeare play is one of the best ways to learn about directing. Watching a bunch of productions of a Shakespeare play is one of the best ways to learn about editing. Recorded theatre can be pretty ephemeral, so watch it while you can. ***Want to stay updated on future opportunities to see this Macbeth or other great recorded theatre production? Episode 090: The Importance of Being Earnest by Oscar Wilde Host: Douglas Schatz Guest: Max Webster Welcome to The Play Podcast where we explore the greatest new and classic plays. Each episode we choose a single play to talk about in depth with our expert guest. We'll discuss the play's origins, its themes, characters, structure and impact. For us the play is the thing. Oscar Wilde's The Importance of Being Earnest is arguably the most famous romantic comedy in theatrical history. The play is renowned for its effervescent portrait of aristocratic romance, and its impossibly clever wit, including some of the most quotable lines in dramatic literature. But it is also an anarchic parody of social custom and pretension – a serious statement of aesthetic principles and coded sexual politics. As we record this episode, a joyous new production of the play is running at the National Theatre in London, and I am delighted to talk about Wilde's classic with its acclaimed director, Max Webster.
In a fantastic additional episode, WhatsOnStage's intrepid deputy editor Tom Millward hopped to the National to meet three of the stars of The Importance of Being Earnest. The cast discuss Max Webster's take on the classic, finding the queer underpinnings in Wilde's work and bringing new audiences to the National – as well as working with Ncuti Gatwa. Hosted on Acast. From booking concerts at university to doing major label promo, to working for top concert promoter MICHAEL COHL doing marketing. Bob then became an A&R guru at WARNER Music where he signed acts such as HONEYMOON SUITE, BLUE RODEO and FROZEN GHOST. He also helped ALANNAH MYLES and RUSH get their US careers going. Before joining Warner, he spent time as tour manager of SUPERTRAMP who, then at the peak of their career, ended up playing Madison Square Garden. After leaving Warner, Bob jumped into management working closely with SHARON LOIS AND BRAM, where he brought them to another level before moving on to handle A&R/management for the SRO/ANTHEM company (home of RUSH, GOWAN, MAX WEBSTER & CONEY HATCH).Following that, Bob ran his own management company (GOWAN, MOLLY JOHNSON) and then taught at the HARRIS INSTITUTE for 30 years! Wanting to be closer to home, Bob spent a couple of years working at the PRECISION manufacturing company and he just recently retired.I truly loved this interview as I also had a chance to THANK Bob for taking a chance on me as Producer of the debut album for HONEYMOON SUITE.His faith in me and the massive success of the 4 Top 10 singles (and TRIPLE PLATINUM sales of the album) was a game changer for me and changed my life forever!! Jeff's special guest is as musical as it gets. And now a music author to boot. He learned to play, he learned to teach, and he landed the role as a guitarist in the “We Will Rock You” musical in Toronto, after winning the slot upon a successful audition with Brian May and Roger Taylor of QUEEN. Then he did some performances with Classic Albums Live, faithfully delivering the guitar parts of Jimmy Page for Zeppelin IV, and Alex Lifeson's guitar for the RUSH album 2112. He'd recreate records by other bands including Genesis, Beatles, YES, and Pink Floyd. Oh, and we talk KISS Cruise, because he's done that too. So, Bob Wegner knows how to play. He also knows how to compose. And now he's added author to his resume in coming out with Max Webster "High Class", the DEFINITIVE book about Max Webster, endorsed by Kim Mitchell and the other members of the Max machine, as it were. I hand Bob a guitar and he hands you a few performances including some deep tracks by Genesis and Paul McCartney, plus a precious gem by Max Webster. And we talk Beatles and Stones, and a reaction to Steve Lukather's recent rant about what the hell has become of (some) modern music and the way it's made. Here comes the intelligent, talented and perfectly talkative Bob Wegner in an episode rooted in Max Webster, with branches all over the place, because these two are geeking out with Kim Mitchell's band, and beyond the moon. Brian Gagnon has been a full time musician for most of his life. Having played in the popular bar band, Dillinger before forming the classic Canadian band, the Hunt. He put the Hunt together with former members of Dillinger & former Max Webster drummer Paul Kersey. "Tom Sawyer" Brad Mehldau: Jacob's Ladder (Nonesuch Records, 2022) Brad Mehldau, Chris Thile, Luca van den Bossche, Joel Frahm, Mark Guiliana, John Davis. This episode we're introducing a new series where we curate what we think are the best 40 minutes of music from an underrated band's career ... with headbangers and hard rockers in mind (ie. you won't be hearing many ballads!). Basically, it's what we'd put on a single vinyl release (being limited to 20 minutes per side) if we were asked to put a Best Of record together to convince the uninitiated long haired miscreant that this band is worth checking out. Our first episode is dedicated to those Canuckleheads in borrowed shoes ... Max Webster. No compromise, no deals! Side 1 Max Webster (1976) (0:00) Hangover (4:34) Only Your Nose Knows High Class In Borrowed Shoes (1977) (7:51) High Class In Borrowed Shoes (11:52) America's Veins Mutiny Up My Sleeve (1978) (16:17) Lip Service Side 2 A Million Vacations (1979) (20:22) Paradise Skies (23:48) Night Flights (26:53) Rascal Houdini Universal Juveniles (1980) (30:23) In The World of Giants (34:42) Check (37:19) Drive and Desire

With the release of Moving Pictures, Canadian power trio Rush moved to their highest level of commercial success. Bassist and lead singer Geddy Lee, guitarist Alex Lifeson, and percussionist extraordinaire Neil Peart were established at the top of the prog rock genre, and this eighth studio album would be their most successful studio release in their career, becoming so when it crossed the quadruple platinum level of sales. The band had originally planned to release a live album at the conclusion of their tour for "Permanent Waves," but Neil Peart encouraged them to change direction towards a new studio release based upon interesting material they were creating during sound checks on tour. The album itself was more accessible than some of their early work. While most songs would clock in at over 4 minutes (and "The Camera Eye" was over 10 minutes long), the pieces were still more radio-friendly than longer pieces like Hemispheres and 2112. The music and lyrics cover topics like travel, individualism, and fame. The album cover art consists of a group of movers transporting canvas art (moving pictures), onlookers who are crying at seeing the art (moving pictures), and a film crew recording the entire scene (making moving pictures). There is simply no bad track on this album, and Bruce found it difficult to determine which songs to feature. We encourage you to purchase or download Moving Pictures for your repertoire if you don't already have it. Red BarchettaAlthough not released as a single, this is a fan favorite, and one of their most accomplished lyric stories. Neil Peart's lyrics were inspired from a short story by Richard S. Foster called "A Nice Morning Drive," written in the November 1973 issue of Road and Track magazine. It is about a country drive during a time in the future when cars had been outlawed by "The Motor Law."LimelightThis piece reflects Peart's mixed feelings about fame, and is the second single from the album. Many times Lee and Lifeson would interact with the public while Peart would remain away from the crowds. Some of the lyrics reflect a line from Shakespeare's "As You Like It," as does the title of their first life album, "All the World's a Stage."Vital SignsThe last track on side 2 takes a more reggae feel, similar to The Police. It also has more in common with more synth-heavy pieces which would appear on subsequent Rush albums like Signals and Grace Under Pressure. The music is about individuality and conformity, a theme often recurring in Rush's catalogue. Tom SawyerUndoubtedly, this is the most famous Rush song. It was written by Rush in collaboration with lyricist Pye Dubois of the band Max Webster, and pays homage to the free-spirited individualist confidently striding through the world. Although the first single, the leading track to the album, and the most successful song, Tom Sawyer peaked on the Billboard Hot 100 at number 44. Most concerts late in their career would open with this song. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Main Theme from the television series Diff'rent StrokesThis comedy series addressed many social issues, and would take a more serious tone with a 2-part episode addressing pedophilia in this month. STAFF PICKS:Turn Me Loose by LoverboyBrian's staff pick stays with the Canadian bands, featuring the first breakout hit by Loverboy from their debut album. While the band appreciated the success, they were less pleased with the S&M community, who adopted it as a kind of "theme song" of their practitioners. Miss Sun by Boz ScaggsRob brings us a song first recorded in 1977 by a group of session musicians who would become Toto, and those musicians worked on the Scaggs version as well. The Toto musicians participated in Scaggs' ciritical and commercial hit album "Silk Degrees" in 1976. Miss Sun peaked at number 14 in February. It has a jazzy chord progression.People Who Died by The Jim Carroll BandWayne's staff pick features a punk-infused song from Jim Carroll, whose biography inspired the film "The Basketball Diaries." The movie deals with Carroll's heroin addiction. The song mentions the name of a number of Carroll's friends and acquaintances who had passed away. Jim Carroll himself died in 2009.I Ain't Gonna Stand for It by Stevie WonderBruce's staff pick highlights a country-oriented song by R&B legend Stevie Wonder. Wonder plays piano and drums on this song, and is joined by backing vocalists Charlie and Ronnie Wilson of The Gap Band. You may also be familiar with a cover of the song done by Eric Clapton in 2001. INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:YYZ by RushWe sneak in one more from Moving Pictures with this instrumental homage to the Toronto airport. The initial percussion is Morse code for the letters YYZ - the three-letter code for Toronto.
Paul and Jill are heading to Whoville in this week’s exploration of Dr. Seuss’ The Grinch Musical! This television adaption of the 2006 musical was directed by Max Webster (stage) and Julia Knowles (film) with music by Mel Marvin and starring Glee’s Matthew Morrison as the titular triple-decker toadstool and sauerkraut sandwich. Burning questions for this height of television history include: can we get Stephen Sondheim on the phone? Have we finally met a fart joke Paul didn’t like? And why? It's safe to say that Growing up Much is something millennials and Gen Xers have in common. Erica Ehm was one of the first batch of VJs to grace Canadian airwaves back when MuchMusic launched in 1984. Her broadcast journey actually began in Montreal in the late 70's when she entered her College into a contest on CHOM-FM to have Max Webster play in the Marianapolis Cafeteria. While her school did not win the contest, Erica did score a job in the CHOM-FM music library, and work and Broadway Live as a DJ where Suggs from Madness crashed on her family's sofa, she saw the GoGo's perform, and Bono told her to go into P.R.In this episode, we talk to Erica Ehm about her journey to MuchMusic, through MuchMusic, and all the creative projects that came after including television, stage productions and songwriting. Did you know Erica has won multiple Junos and Canadian Country Music Awards? Exactly! That's why you need to hear how Erica evolved. And guess what is next? Kim Mitchell, guitarist, singer, songwriter, broadcaster chats about his newest song "Wishes" “It’s like that classic car that’s been in the garage for a while – the one you’re going to strip down and restore ‘cause you know there’s something special there, but you just never seem to get around to it.” That’s how Kim Mitchell thought of The Big Fantasize, his latest studio album, before finally rolling up his sleeves with co-producer and close friend Greg Wells (Keith Urban, Adele, Taylor Swift, 21 Pilots) and getting their hands dirty. Turns out there was something pretty sweet hiding under the hood… The Big Fantasize marks the Canadian music icon’s eighth solo studio album (plus 5 as the leader of Max Webster) and first since 2007’s Ain’t Life Amazing. But where its predecessor was a fiery and fierce rock album anchored by big riffs and bigger swagger, The Big Fantasize is a more dynamic and musically expansive effort that perfectly encapsulates Mitchell’s prowess as a pure and compelling songwriter. In fact, he is soon to be inducted into the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame joining other inductee’s like Leonard Cohen, Gordon Lightfoot and Neil Young The sanguine lead track, “WISHES” is best described as an ethereal and enveloping soundtrack to a slow dance under the stars with a very timely message of having less and living more: of savouring lifes simplest pleasures. “After very randomly reading A.C. Child’s poem ‘Wishes,’ I knew immediately I wanted to turn it into a song,” Mitchell explains. “The challenge was coming up with a melody and music that would be harmonically satisfying for me, yet present itself as simple, pretty, and properly serving the lyric.” Musically, the verses came relatively quickly, though Mitchell soon realized that whereas the poem felt complete on its own, it didn’t seem that way in song – at least not yet. “I felt I needed something lyrically and musically to sum up the whole idea, and a deviation somewhere – a short musical passage that you could just float away with before coming back to the song’s final message,” he says. That took patience and plenty of trial-and-error – years’ worth, in fact. “I’d leave it for months, come back and work on it, leave it again then come back, until one peaceful morning while looking out my front window with an acoustic on my lap, the refrain just came to me. I wasn’t even searching for it but there it was! The bridge I thought it needed so badly came right after and a sigh of accomplishment washed over me with the song finally finished.” “I feel lucky to have been the conduit for this song to come to life. I hope I served it well cuz songwriters don’t always come up with the idea, most often the idea picks them and this lyric and song, through pure serendipity, now arrive as my first single at a particularly poignant and difficult time.” Follow Us: Instagram: www.instagram.com/crossborderpodcast/ Twitter: twitter.com/CrossBorderPod Facebook : www.facebook.com/CrossBorderInterviewPodcast/ Website: www.crossborderinterviews.ca/ Cross Border Interviews is owned by Miranda, Brown & Associates Inc.

On this Kim Mitchell Interview, Kim talks about how Max Webster came together, and why the band ultimately broke up… working with Joe Walsh “almost”... opening for Black Sabbath, why he never opened for Kiss, an emotional experience he had while watching Allan Holdsworth, hanging backstage with Eddie Van Halen… the backstory to his new record and some of the songs on it… moving through a low point in his life when he lost a parent, his marriage broke up, and he was at a musical low - and how he came back even stronger… making your bed, race cars, his guitars & amps, curiosity and more. AWESOME conversation, lots of energy and lots of laughs - a MUST! Kim Mitchell was the lead singer & guitarist for the band Max Webster (5 LPs) before going on to a solo career where he’s released 8 solo records, including a new LP called The Big Fantasize. Kim is a multi-platinum selling artist, a Juno Award Winner (CA Grammy), and is being inducted into the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame Support this Show: http://www.everyonelovesguitar.com/support Subscribe https://www.everyonelovesguitar.com/subscribe/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/EveryoneLovesGuitar/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/everyonelovesguitar/

The great Kim Mitchell joins me this week on No Sleep 'til Sudbury for an incredibly enjoyable chat about the songs that make his skin vibrate, and his new single 'Wishes'. Kim is easily one of Canada's most accomplished musicians, from his days leading Max Webster through an illustrious, hit-laden solo career. The coolest thing about Kim is that in talking with him, you'd never know it. He's humble, funny, insightful, and very engaging, and as you'll hear, he's got some great stories - the one involving Eddie Van Halen is my favourite. If you like NSTS, this will likely be one of your favourite episodes. Mitchell's playlist: Van Halen - Dreams Bonnie Raitt - I Can't Make You Love Me Kacey Musgraves - Slow Burn Arc Angels - Sent By Angels Don Henley - Boys of Summer

New to InObscuria? Typically what we do is exhume obscure Rock n' Punk n' Metal in one of 3 categories: the Lost, the Forgotten, or the Should Have Beens. In the case of this particular episode, we are leaning towards the FORGOTTEN. Although, a band that is fifth behind The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, KISS, and Aerosmith for the most consecutive gold or platinum studio albums by a rock band in the United States is hardly forgotten… In any case, we are paying tribute to one of the greatest drummers of all time! This week we deep dive with two musicians… from buying costumes in bulk from the Ice Capades to playing in a Greek show band, my guests today have done it all. Later Alice Cooper is on the line to have a look back at his storied career… and the difference between Alice Cooper and his creator… but first Kim Mitchell swings by the Pop Life bar. If you grew up in Canada you know the songs "Patio Lanterns", "Rock and Roll Duty", "Rockland Wonderland” and if you’re like me, his band Max Webster was the first big rock and roll show you ever saw live. I remember they opened for Rush, were the loudest thing I had ever heard to that date and played my favourite tunes from their albums, all of which I had memorized. The first time I interviewed Mitchell was more than thirty years ago just after he left Max Webster for a solo career. I mumbled my way through the interview, in awe of speaking to him. I did better this time.

This week: We’ve got a phenomenal in 1991 interview with REM, just as “Losing My Religion” was turning them into global superstars. Kim talks about his past hits, his radio career and his new project with Barenaked Ladies. And finally, we have a brief chat with Barry Manilow about the biggest hit of his career and his success... as a jingle writer!
The possibly despicable term “art rock” is where pop, prog & rock meet, with a generous layer of quirk embedded throughout. Art rock is pop without restraint, prog with good table manners, rock stretching its creative fibers beyond the norm. And yet, gray areas abound!...
Max Webster front man, and all around awesome guy (who happens to be Canadian!), Kim Mitchell joins me on this episode. We go back and hear about how Kim went from Sarnia, Ontario to the Greek Islands with a guitar in-hand. Gear talk does occur as well, but this episode is all about the love of music, guitar playing and crazy stories. Enjoy. http://kimmitchell.ca/ https://twitter.com/TheKimMitchell https://www.facebook.com/kimmitchellband/
