The Environmental Protection Agency unveiled ambitious new emissions rules this week. Now, Tesla Raj, who is in attendance at the Cyber Rodeo in Texas, is indicating a Model Y at the factory fits the description of the one added to the EPA's FuelEconomy website last month. - An online Tesla VIN Decoder shows the vehicle was manufactured at the new plant in Austin and is, in fact, a Standard Range version of the Model Y. Tesla battery supplier LG Energy Solutions announces $1.4B battery factory in Arizona - Tesla battery supplier LG Energy Solutions announced it would build a $1.4 billion battery production facility in Arizona as demand for electric vehicles throughout the United States skyrockets. - LG Energy Solutions said it would build the $1.4 billion plant to meet demand for “prominent startups” and other North American companies - The factory is expected to be operational by 2024, the company believes. - The Arizona plant will be LGES's first-ever U.S. factory to make cylindrical electric vehicle cells, which are typically used by automakers like Tesla and Lucid, which has an automotive production facility in Arizona. The recent PAS 2060 certification makes the plant the world's first zero-carbon factory in the new energy industry. - The certification marks a significant milestone for CATL towards its carbon neutrality goals. As the world's first zero-carbon battery plant, CATL's Sichuan plant sets an example of how battery production can be carbon neutral. - To become PAS 2060 certified, CATL-SC said it developed a "trailblazing smart plant management system", which enables the interconnection of data by automatically capturing the plant system data and equipment operation data. The system-wide facility management platform helps to ensure safe, reliable, high-efficiency and low-carbon operation of the facility. Even the forklifts used at the plant are electric. Employees are also encouraged to use electric vehicles and shared mobility to get to work, further reducing their carbon footprint. - CATL-SC's parent CATL is emerging as a leader in EV battery production on a global scale. In December, CATL began phase 1 production at its newest EV battery factory in China. Once completed, the plant will be the world's largest EV battery factory with an annual production of 120 GWh. Electrify America says the goal is to create “a more inviting transition to an electric vehicle lifestyle from traditional gas station.” - The most notable change for Electrify America's current design is the inclusion of solar panel awnings, which have the dual effect of sheltering customers from the sun and inclement weather while also supplying power for the station's operations. The company says it is currently in the process of adding solar awnings to 400-500 individual chargers at 100 charging stations across the country. Now for our feature story: Business is booming for area auto dealerships, a far cry from a year ago when many showrooms were still closed as a result of COVID-19 pandemic restrictions. The turnaround hasn't been without its challenges, however — local dealerships are finding themselves in the unique position of working to keep inventory in stock during a nationwide shortage of vehicles. Staff at both Valenti Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram and Brustolon Buick GMC Truck in Mystic said while they have been able to replenish stock, often daily, they have not been completely void of the impact of the national shortage. Said Brustolon owner, “Even with the nationwide shortage, this is a wonderful time to purchase a vehicle,” Casey said Wednesday. “We are staying positive and are happy to be here to help.” For dealerships like Brustolon, which is family owned and operated, the shutdown at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic presented a huge challenge. Travel was greatly restricted and people were ordered to stay home, showrooms were closed to the public and even when they reopened had to do so often by appointment only, and dealers across the country found themselves with plenty of cars and trucks. As the impact of the virus spread, automotive factories shut down for several months. The nationwide move to working at home led to far fewer cars on the road and high demand for laptops and monitors that caused a shift in semiconductor base production from automotive microchips to technologies for computer electronics. One year later, the entire landscape has changed — even if the root cause still stems from the initial pandemic shutdown that took place 15 months ago. The combination of economic stimulus payments, vaccination efforts and loosening of restrictions aided in a faster-than-expected rebound for the industry, and automobile makers were unable to ramp up production, in part due to the microchip shortage that has persisted since production slowed and demand shifted more than a year ago. Analysts foresee no return to normal before next year. “It's like toilet paper was a year ago,” said Michelle Krebs, executive analyst for Cox Automotive, in an interview with the Associated Press. “Everyone is rushing to buy a car.” For more about the coronavirus pandemic and the latest on all things in and around Westerly, head over to westerlysun.com. She was the daughter of the late Angela Delicato and granddaughter of the late Richard and Ann Delicato. Marrecca was the beloved niece of Ann Devlin, Helen Algier and Barbara Jackson. She will also be sadly missed by her cousins. Marrecca was a Senior Media Relations Specialist for UCLA Health. Nearly 50,000 UAW workers have gone on strike at General Motors, the first time the union has gone on strike in 12 years, after the last four-year agreement expired without an agreement over a new one. The strike also comes at a time that federal authorities are widening their investigation into embezzlement by top union leadership past and present, with nine people so far convicted of skimming member dues and money from automakers meant to support job-training programs. General Motors dropped a bomb on Monday, saying it will likely close three assembly plants including Detroit-Hamtramck in a pre-emptive move to cut costs and headcount ahead of an expected downturn. The moves mean the elimination of as many as 14,000 jobs — including 1,500 at Detroit-Hamtramck — and the elimination of slow-selling sedans like the Chevrolet Volt and Impala and the Buick LaCrosse. A transmission plant in Warren could also close. It's a particularly dubious cap to the saga of the Poletown plant, which rose during the 1980s after the two cities it straddles worked with GM to condemn and raze a working-class neighborhood of the same name. On today's episode, we speak with Hamtramck Mayor Karen Majewski, who tells us the closure leaves a city defined by the auto industry without any actual auto manufacturing. It also leaves Detroit without an open auto-assembly plant. In fact, here's Mayor Mike Duggan statement about it: "This morning I spoke to Mary Barra and she advised me for the first time of the situation at the Detroit-Hamtramck Assembly Plant. The news is troubling. I have spoken to UAW President Gary Jones and the city's economic development team. They are working together to come up with a solution that works for GM and the employees. We all know there is strong demand for manufacturing space in Detroit and we are willing to work with GM to fill all the available manufacturing space at Poletown with either GM-related entities or other companies." When GM product guru Bob Lutz retired, many automotive insiders wondered what would happen to the company’s revived product line and, more importantly, who would fill those big shoes. GM veteran Mary Barra was appointed Senior Vice President of Global Product Development soon after and the stunning products have kept rolling off the line.
