Their first introduction to Josiah Venture was when they served as high school students in the Czech Republic at English camps. That exposure to peer evangelism started them on a journey with Josiah Venture to share Christ with the youth of Central & Eastern Europe. In 2002, they served as summer interns in Czech before marrying in January 2003. For the next three consecutive years, Ben and Kristy led short-term high school teams from southern New Jersey to the Czech Republic for camp ministry. The conversation was set to be more organic and conversational, with Doug sharing more about his company and their approach to mental health. Paradigm Shift in Drug Development Doug expressed his belief that their work has the potential to be a paradigm shift in drug development, moving from daily treatment of symptoms to more interventional therapies that can rapidly fix conditions like depression. He highlighted the promising results from their studies, with patients experiencing benefits lasting at least a year after just a couple of doses. Michael shared his personal experience with depression and burnout, emphasizing the importance of their work in addressing this widespread issue. He also asked Doug about his ability to anticipate future challenges and steps in the approval process for their work. Drug Development Challenges and Success Doug discussed the challenges and complexities of drug development, particularly in the mental health sector. He highlighted the team's experience and success in developing treatments, with 60+ INDs and 37 exits. Doug also emphasized the personal motivation of the team members, many of whom have been affected by mental health issues. He acknowledged the regulatory hurdles and administrative complexities involved in drug development but stressed the importance of these steps in creating effective treatments. Michael added that the success of the treatments could also positively impact the revenue of psychiatrists and their practices. Improving Mental Health Care Efficiency Doug discussed the potential of a new treatment to improve mental health care. He highlighted that depressed patients require a lot of attention, often visiting their physicians multiple times a year for medication adjustments and dealing with side effects. He also pointed out the shortage of psychiatrists and the long wait times for new patients. Doug suggested that their treatment, which only requires dosing once or twice, could keep patients out of the system for at least a year, freeing up resources for new patients. He also mentioned the potential for interventional psychiatry centers to see more patients if the treatment reduces the required visits. Mental Health and Metabolic Connection Michael and Doug discussed the challenges of mental health, particularly financial stress and depression. Michael shared his personal experience of overcoming depression with the help of medication and therapy and expressed his excitement about the potential of innovative work in mental health. Doug emphasized the link between metabolic health and mental health, suggesting that a poor diet can lead to reduced mental function and that mental health issues can affect an individual's metabolic health. Both agreed on the importance of addressing mental health issues to improve overall well-being and happiness. Phase 3 Program Progress and Strategy Doug discussed the progress of their phase 3 program, focusing on the challenges and complexities involved, such as drug scheduling and licensing. He expressed optimism about the potential of their treatments, citing their significant effects and the absence of dosing every day in their studies. Doug also outlined their long-term strategy, which includes leveraging their phase 3 approval in depression to treat other conditions and shift from daily chronic dosing to more interventional treatments. He emphasized the potential to break the cycle of polypharmacy and create a platform for various treatments. Michael supported their work and encouraged more people to learn about their efforts.

Internationalization is the order of the day for many retailers and brands. However, for around two and a half years now, the focus has been on profitability rather than just growth.  This is because many companies have already had the painful experience of finding that although they can sell abroad, the whole thing is anything but profitable. This is because every market has its own characteristics: different customer preferences and buying habits, different price levels, different storage and logistics costs, different returns behavior, etc. This makes the leap across the border very complex to implement, even - or especially - via marketplaces. Technical solutions such as marketplace middleware or the services of a full-service marketplace integrator can help. One such provider is ChannelEngine, sponsor partner of Marketplace Universe. ChannelEngine can connect more than 950 marketplaces and social media platforms via its solution and process the business there. In the new episode 65, Valerie talks to Dexter van Hofwegen, Director Sales EMEA at ChannelEngine, about the strategic considerations required for successful internationalization, how to reduce the complexity of the various country characteristics, which cost drivers need to be taken into account, how to calculate worthwhile minimum selling prices and how meaningful KPIs on seller performance, delivery times and returns can provide support. Note from our sponsor partner Allegro: Marketplace Universe also stands for further education for marketplace people. On June 5th the first webinar will take place in cooperation with our sponsor Allegro. The topic: “How to scale your Marketplace Business across CEE using Allegro's platform” - in short, retailers and brands will learn how to sell successfully in Poland and Central Eastern Europe on the Allegro marketplace. If this is exciting for you, make a note of this date in your calendar: When: Wednesday, June 5, 2024, 9:00 - 10:00 a.m. Where: Online Who: Emilia Gregorczyk, Business Development Partner at Allegro and Valerie How: Free of charge by pre-registration. The British marketplace OnBuy is starting its internationalization this summer with platforms in 10 new countries, expanding to 30 countries total by the end of 2025. TikTok Shop will start earlier in continental Europe than expected and is now speaking about launching “this summer”. The company has already started to invite merchants to beta-tests in Germany, France, Italy and Spain. The compliance specialist Avalara has canceled its cooperation with Amazon. Many underdeveloped nations don't have the financial capacity to pursue transformative projects like building hospitals or infrastructure. Diaspora Bonds help fund these projects from expatriates who want to help their home country. Dr. Gevorkyan also explores how other nations have successfully used their diaspora to spur growth. By using diversified asset classes, you are helping smooth out the journey instead of being so focused on the destination. The focus of the research on populism as a category of political analysis has mostly been on domestic politics and can be traced back to the 1960s. Only in the last two decades this field of inquiry taken a more focused and specialized hue, involving systematic attempts to investigate populist governments' behavior in the international arena. ... While some scholars understand populism as a threat to the institutions of liberal democracy and even of the liberal international order, others consider the populist potential to enhance democracy—understood as popular rule—and promote a fairer global governance. – Introduction to Populist Foreign Policy (Palgrave MacMillan, 2023) This edited volume, Populist Foreign Policy: Regional Perspectives of Populism in the International Scene, explores the global phenomenon of populism in relation to states' foreign policy, addressing two key questions: How do populists mold their foreign policies? What are the domestic and external factors that enable and constrain it? To this end, Professors Giurlando and Wajner's book brings together a diverse group of scholars who have already researched on populist foreign policies (PFP) in specific countries to contribute shared chapters that examine their drivers, patterns, and effects according to distinctive regions: North America, Western Europe, Southern Europe, Central-Eastern Europe, Latin America, South-East Asia, the Middle East, Oceania, and Africa. The empirical analysis sheds new light on how populists' distinctive conception of a world divided antagonistically between “the people” and “the elites” influences behavior towards multilateral organizations such as the United Nations and the European Union, and regional or global hegemonic powers like the United States, Germany, Russia, and China. The book also shows how ideas related to identity, ideology, status and emotions, impinge on populists' conduct vis-à-vis other international actors, and how national and international structures affect the implementation of populist foreign policies in the regional, interregional, and global arenas. The wide geographical diversity and regional representation are also valuable in identifying cultural similarities and differences. Hence, the findings contribute to lively debates on whether there is a unified and coherent foreign policy among populist leaderships, and whether populism leads to a gradual “corrective” of transnational trends in contemporary politics or, conversely, to a more radical, structural shift in the liberal international order. Philip Giurlando is Assistant Professor of International Relations in the International Studies Department at Xian-Jiao Tong Livermore University. His research interests include the formation and consequences of inter-state hierarchies, and populist foreign policies. Often when we talk about competition between two nations, the US and China is the perfect example for today, we get arguments that are boiled down to broad ideas; like East vs the West and capitalism vs communism. But when we do this, we often lose a lot of nuance and miss some important details. Not too long ago, the US and the West were competing with the USSR and pooled their resources towards containing the spread of communism. Fast forward to now and some of the satellite states and former Soviet Union nations have turned into development success stories. Nations like Poland have increased their GDP by 179% since the fall of the USSR in 1990; Estonia's GDP per capita in 1995 was $3,134, and in 2021 it's just below $28,000. According to Gartner's 2022 CEO study, the workforce has become the third most important priority for CEOs in 2022 and 2023,1 making this a top issue for the highest-level executives of the enterprise. A number of these workforce issues are the great resignation, hybrid work and burnout. All of these are at the forefront of the VP of HR agenda. Gartner has extensive research addressing these topics (see recommended reading below). However, the shift from the human capital function to CEO and boardroom conversations often has additional dimensions. Beyond attracting, acquiring, retaining and training talent, the collective delivery execution of remote, globally distributed personnel, workflows, processes, and enabling tools and technologies add to the complexity. This translates to productivity and utilization of personnel in pursuit of team-based synergistic collaboration. The collective impact on time (cycle time, elapsed time, reaction time), quality and risk is the boardroom conversation of “labor volatility.” The biggest market implication is business disruption; specifically, the inability to:Launch a new product or serviceDeliver an existing product or serviceAvoid significant delays that have a “material” financial impact The term “material” is an accounting term that means significant financial consequence that must be explained on financial disclosures. This podcast features a case study of global talent resilience to showcase the art of the possible for addressing labor volatility. The case study is about EPAM, which started in the U.S. in 1993 as a software engineering services company. The focus was to deliver application development and engineering services from Eastern Europe. Now, EPAM is a service provider that is a consulting firm, system integrator or managed services firm.PAM had been consistently growing at a strong pace from its foray into the public market (2012 IPO). At the time, financial and industry analysts had identified one of its areas of vulnerability as its unusually high concentration (85%) of personnel in Belarus, Russia and Ukraine. Thus, EPAM's leadership developed and began executing a multiyear plan to derisk by shifting talent across 50 countries around the world. The plan was moving forward with investments in highly distributed collaboration tools, client engagement and people platforms, and new agile development approaches targeted to multicultural and time-zone-agnostic work techniques. Starting in 2014, a series of disruptive events occurred. There were significant geopolitical issues in Belarus, Crimea and other areas of importance to EPAM operations. This forced EPAM to accelerate its plan. Then, we were all impacted by the pandemic. Similar to many other companies, EPAM was navigating the complexities of the pandemic-mandated, almost instantaneous shift to fully remote operations.hen EPAM entered the public markets in 2012, it had 8,000 employees, with 82% concentrated in Central Eastern Europe (CEE). By 2015, it lowered its concentration in CEE to 71%, having grown to 18,000 employees. There was continued progress over the years. In the second quarter of 2022, EPAM had 60,000 employees, with a concentration of 31% in Central Eastern Europe. In this podcast, EPAM's CEO Arkadiy Dobkin recounts how his team made the incredible shift of people and resources out of Belarus, Russia and Ukraine to more than 12 other countries. From August 2020 through May 2022, EPAM shifted close to 10,000 employees from Belarus, Russia and Ukraine to countries such as Poland, Georgia, Turkey, Lithuania and many others. In summary, EPAM went from 85% of its people in Belarus, Russia and Ukraine in 2012, to 69% in 2015, to 31% in 2022. By any standard, this kind of people pivot is amazing and is a demonstrated example of global talent resiliency.About the GuestOur host Frances Karamouzis is joined by Arkadiy Dobkin. Dobkin is the CEO, president and chairman of the board at EPAM Systems, a leading digital transformation services and product engineering company. Under his leadership, EPAM has grown from a New-Jersey-based startup with Eastern European roots to the foremost global digital transformation services provider — leading the industry in digital and physical product development and digital platform engineering services. Today, EPAM is a global enterprise and part of the S&P 500 Index.

This lecture event is part of the 14th Annual Kościuszko Chair Conference presented by the Kościuszko Chair of Polish Studies and the Center for Intermarium Studies. About the lecture: It was initially believed that active measures would disintegrate and disappear with the collapse of the Soviet Union. However, it has become evident that active measures have not disappeared, but rather have only largely transferred to the digital domain. The term active measures was coined in the 1920's; however, Russia has practiced these political warfare tactics for centuries. Through all this time the message has stayed the same, Russia hopes to sow divisions between societies and allies, but ultimately wants citizens to lose hope in liberal democracies. The end goal is to make the world a safer place for Putin's authoritarian regime. Through analyzing active measures that have taken place in both the near abroad nations and the United States from the Cold War years until today, it becomes evident that active measures have not disappeared, but rather have only evolved in their technique and form. About the speaker: Ms. Agnes Tycner recently graduated from The Institute of World Politics with a master's degree in Statecraft and International Affairs with a specialization in Russia and Central/Eastern Europe. She will be working for the Victims of Communism Memorial Foundation starting January as a Research Fellow in Polish Studies. Agnes also plans to continue her education by attending law school.
