My guest today is an English writer for video games, TV, film, comics, and books. Born into a literary household – her father was the celebrated fantasy novelist Terry Pratchett –– she studied journalism at the University of Arts in London. After graduating she joined the staff of PC Zone, where she worked her way up from editorial assistant to the role of section editor. In 2002 she left journalism to write video games, soon earning a BAFTA nomination for her work on Heavenly Sword. In 2013 she wrote the award-winning reboot of Tomb Raider, then its sequel, Rise of the Tomb Raider, for which she won the Outstanding Achievement in Videogame Writing award from the Writers Guild of America. My guest has also written comics for DC, Dark Horse, and Marvel, and her film and TV projects include collaborations with Film 4, and the Henson Company. As well as being the first woman to write a Fighting Fantasy novel, she has co-authored Campaigns & Companions: The Complete Roleplaying Guide for Pets. Last year she hosted the BBC Radio 4 series Mythical Creatures, a compendium of Britain's mythic beasts, and what they tell us about our history.LINKS:Rhianna's website.https://www.theguardian.com/books/booksblog/2018/mar/12/terry-pratchett-moomins-rhianna-pratchett Be attitude for gains. https://plus.acast.com/s/my-perfect-console. Episode Notes We were so incredibly pleased to be joined by Gabrielle Kent and Rhianna Pratchett, the co-authors of this new book in the Discworld library. Tiffany's story is one of our favorites, and having both more Tiffany and more witch stuff is just the best. Tiffany Aching's Guide to Being a Witch would make a great holiday present! We're not sure yet of a US release date, so consider buying it directly from The Discworld Emporium or Discworld.com (and if other things just sort of happen to fall into your shopping basket... well, blame the Feegles). If you want to check out the Mythical Creatures series Rhianna mentioned, keep an eye on the BBC Radio Four site as well as BBC Sounds. It looks like it starts airing December 18! Gabrielle Kent is the author of the Alfie Bloom and Knights and Bikes series. She collaborated on the Rani Reports series with her husband as Gabrielle and Satish Shewhorak. Gabrielle lives in the North East of England. She grew up in the 1980's drawing castles and dragons, reading comics, and playing videogames. In the summers, she ran wild with her brothers and cousins on her Granny's farm in Galway. Her first job was as a video-game artist working on games for PC, Playstation and XBox. She spent sixteen years as a university lecturer teaching students how to make videogames, and ran and hosted various games and animation festivals along the way. She has always loved exploring castles and in 2006 she visited Castle Coch in Wales. As she looked at a carving of The Fates over one of the fireplaces, an idea for a story crept into her head. When she got home she started typing the story of Alfie Bloom, the boy who inherited a castle and has written many more books since. Rhianna Pratchett has been a professional writer for several years. Having written numerous features and columns on games, movies and books and originally cutting her journalistic teeth on PC Zone magazine and The Guardian newspaper, Rhianna moved into script writing and narrative design in 2002. In 2007 her work on Heavenly Sword was nominated for a BAFTA and a year later she won a Writers' Guild of Great Britain 'Best Videogame Script' award for Overlord. Alongside writing for videogames, she has also authored the Tomb Raider: The Beginning comics with Dark Horse and the 6-part Mirror's Edge miniseries with DC Comics and several of her own short stories. Rhianna has contributed to various books on games narrative including Professional Techniques for Video Game Writing (Edited by: Wendy Despain) and Game Writing: Narrative Skills for Videogames (Edited by: Chris Bateman). She also works with the IGDA Writers' Special Interest Group, the Writers' Guild of Great Britain and BAFTA Games to help improve games narrative and the lot of games writers everywhere. Rhianna currently lives in London, with a couple of neurotic tabbies. True to British form, she drinks a lot of tea. He shares some memories of being editor and the challenges he faced against other magazines, coverdisks and more. From there we go onto his time on PC Zone and how the industry changed, the rivalry with PC Gamer, and what it was like to work with the late Felix Dennis. Finally we cover his time on Official Dreamcast mag, PR role at Activision which led to an amazing Call Of Duty 2 event plus much more. We hope you enjoy the interview and thanks to Tim for his time.

One of my favourite parts of doing this show is discovering the ways people played games in countries all around the world, In this special episode of the show I speak with a listener and linguistics lecturer Andrej Bjelaković about growing up with games in Belgrade, Serbia. Part of the former Yugoslavia, Serbia has had a tumultuos half century. During Milosevic's reign in the 1990s, the country was sanctioned by the UN meaning imports like video games would not be allowed through by any legal means. The ways in which games did find their way into the country, and how people like Andrej were first exposed to them and grew to love them is a unique and fascinating story and one that I had never heard before. We talk about Sega Clubs, a nationwide solution to the problem of having no access to games, pop up PC stores ran by grandparents from their flats, discovering a love of English through blackmarket imports of PC Zone and PC Gamer, playing games while your city is bombed, and how the first legitimate video game he was able to buy was World of Warcraft in 2005.Andrej is a passionate and engaging guide through all of this and so much more. A unique and fascinating take on the games that shaped many of our lives. A genuine treat, and something I’m thruked to share."We've got a wave in the air, radar love."PATREON - patreon.com/checkpointsiTunes HERE - SUBSCRIBE / RATE / REVIEWTheme song by Samuel BakerArt work by

My guest today is the velvet owl Will Porter - Former PC Zone editor, freelancer, and the writer of Project Zomboid, Alien Isolation and No Man's Sky.We talk about how the PC Zone vs. PC Gamer rivalry is no joke, whether growing up on a farm puts you off farming sims for life, how it felt to be a Betamax kid in a VHS world, and how working in the bowels of Canary Wharf made him feel like he was living in Half Life.We also hit on Drop 7 addiction, the challenges of working on a game like No Man's Sky, the exotic allure of Flashback, how much we miss middle tier games and the carnal thrills of games like Max Payne, Duke Nukem and Bulletstorm."Damn, those alien bastards are gonna pay for shooting up my ride."PATREON - patreon.com/checkpointsiTunes HERE - SUBSCRIBE / RATE / REVIEWGames discussed: Zool, Imogen, Repton, Championship Manager, Half Life, Doom, Duke Nukem, Bulletstorm, Flashback, Drop 7, Elite, Carmageddon, the Fallout series, Deus Ex, Powerstone, Ready to Rumble, Abzu, Goldeneye, Far Cry, Uncharted 4, SWAT 4, Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis, Timeshift, Psy Ops, Stanglehold, Alien Isolation, No Man's SkyTheme song by Samuel BakerArt work by Craig Stevenson

My guest today is John Davison. John is currently the general manager of Glixel, a new gaming website by the publisher of Rolling Stone, but is perhaps best known to most as the VP of 1up and one of the original hosts of 1up Yours. We talk through John's inrcedible career in the games press, from his early work in the UK games press on PC Player and PC Zone, the cover disk wars of the mid nineties, becoming an editor aged just 21, his move to America, the impact of 1up Yours and what inspired him to create What They Play. We of course hit on a bunch of games too. How Skyrim and Oblivion ruled his life, why Archer MacLean's Dropzone gave him his first taste of videogame press, the generational impact of Doom and how games are a form of expression, not just in what you make, but in how you play. This was a treat. I don't want to go to work today. I want to stay home and play. On my vidoegames. iTunes HERE - SUBSCRIBE / RATE / REVIEW RSS HERE Games discussed: Dropzone, Doom, Xenogears, Zelda, Skyrim, Oblivion, The Witcher 3, Agar.io, GTA 3, Mincraft, Star Raiders, Pole Position. Today's guest is Cara Ellison, best known for her videogame journalism, in particular her soon to be immortalised as a book "Embed with" columns, which saw her travel the world meeting developers and checking out the local videogame scenes. She's now moved into development and is currently working on the narrative team for Dishonoured 2 and a bunch of other secret things. She's also really into Drake. Like, really. We talk DOTA, Goldeneye, Her Story and why her heart will always be with PC Zone.
Charlie Brooker is a satirist, broadcaster and writer. He created the Emmy-award winning series, Black Mirror, and presents Screenwipe and Newswipe which won Best Comedy Entertainment Show award at the British Comedy Awards in 2011. Born in 1971, his career has been influenced both by his early love of technology - he was a keen computer gamer - and by his passion for the anarchic, surreal and experimental comedy of Monty Python and The Young Ones. After creating his own comic while at school, he went on to provide cartoons for the magazine Oink! at the age of 15. He cultivated his acerbic style and satirical pessimism as a writer of games reviews and features for PC Zone magazine. His online creation TVGoHome, an often caustic parody of television listings in the style of Radio Times, brought him to the attention of the Guardian newspaper where he began writing a TV review column entitled Screen Burn in 2000. This was adapted into a BBC Four television series, and various spin-offs, including Gameswipe and Newswipe, followed. The first two series of Black Mirror, an anthology of unrelated dramas focused around the unexpected consequences of new technologies, aired on Channel 4. The third series was released on Netflix in 2016, followed by a fourth at the end of 2017. Charlie is married to former Blue Peter presenter Konnie Huq and they have two young sons.Presenter: Kirsty Young Producer: Cathy Drysdale.

They say there’s more than one way to skin a cat and, likewise, I say there’s more than one way things can get away from people too. They can slip away slowly and quietly, for example, or they can be taken in a sudden tragedy - and this episode covers a bit of both. This week journalist David Brown talks about the closure of PC Zone Magazine. Once home to the likes of Charlie Brooker, Jon Blyth and Will Porter, PC Zone was a bastion of irreverence that was edged out by the realities of print publishing. As the last writer left on the team, David talks about the final days and how they shaped his opinion of journalism as a whole.
