Escuchar audio
This week, we kick things off talking about what it's like going outside again as a grown-ass adult—because let's be honest, the club hits different when you're worried about back pain and parking. Our Culturally Ratchet Question takes a nostalgic turn: What song had a major impact on your life… but you don't even listen to it anymore? Expect stories, some soul-searching, and a few tracks we might not admit in public. Then we hit the trending topics: — Anthony Edwards reportedly securing 18 years of child support
I'm at the junction of Andrew Young International Boulevard and Peachtree Street in downtown Atlanta, Georgia, which is a complete surprise to me because I'm supposed to be in London, England. This week, we're talking about one of Atlanta's most famous thoroughfares - and no, it's not Peachtree Street - it's Cheshire Bridge Road. Each time the city debuted a new thoroughfare, so began the promotion of its caliber and residents. Streets and avenues like Peachtree, Washington, Edgewood and so on would wage the battles of maintaining its status as an upper class section. As Cheshire Bridge Road has made the news recently because of the fight against adult businesses, it was interesting to see this same story play out over time. So today we're covering its early pioneer history, first businesses, the start of its reputation and its significant LGBTQ history. This week's mini episode is an Atlanta-adjacent topic but one still very intertwined with the city's history. If you're new here, Georgia is the peach state, but in this episode we're going to delve into the history. Why peaches? Where were the peaches? And the most important question of all - why is it named Peachtree Street and why are there so many Peachtree-named streets in Atlanta? Want to support this podcast? Marietta High Students Being Discharged from Hospital After Chemistry Lab Mishap Man Arrested in Fatal Nov. 12 Shooting of Marietta Middle Teacher Atlanta Man Charged with Murder at Cumberland Hotel All of this and more is coming up on the Marietta Daily Journal Podcast, and if you are looking for community news, we encourage you to listen and subscribe! BREAK: CU of GA STORY 1: UPDATE: Marietta High Students Being Discharged from Hospital After Chemistry Lab Mishap Two Marietta High School students suffered chemical burns during a chemistry lab experiment. The incident involved sulfuric acid and magnesium, and occurred when the concentration of the acid was possibly too high, causing an unexpected and abrupt reaction. Both students were wearing safety gear and were under the teacher's direct supervision. Emergency protocols were followed, including placing the injured students under an emergency shower. The students were hospitalized but were in the process of being discharged. The school implemented safety measures, and discussions with the teacher and science department are planned to prevent similar incidents in the future. STORY 2: Man Arrested in Fatal Nov. 12 Shooting of Marietta Middle Teacher A suspect, Leroy Hinton, has been arrested and charged with murder in the shooting death of Marietta Middle School teacher Jason Ogbomoh. The 30-year-old suspect faces charges of felony murder, aggravated assault, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony. The motive for the shooting has not been provided, and the relationship between the suspect and the victim is undisclosed. The 25-year-old victim sustained multiple gunshot wounds and was found on Peachtree Street on November 12. Ogbomoh, a computer science teacher at Marietta Middle School, was remembered as a mentor and role model by the school community. STORY 3: Atlanta Man Charged with Murder at Cumberland Hotel Donte Leon Hale of Atlanta has been charged by the Cobb County Police Department in connection with the fatal shooting at a Cumberland hotel. The suspect is accused of shooting 26-year-old Demarcus Watson with a handgun on November 28 at the Budgetel Inns & Suites — Atlanta Galleria Stadium. Hale faces charges of felony murder, aggravated assault, and two gun-related charges due to his status as a convicted felon. The suspect, who has a previous felony conviction in DeKalb County in 2003, is not listed in Cobb County jail records, and it's unclear whether he has been apprehended. We'll be right back Break: ESOG – CHRISTMAS PIEDMONT STORY 4: Feds Investigating Cobb Schools for Alleged Discrimination The U.S. Department of Education's Office for Civil Rights is investigating the Cobb County School District for a potential violation of the 1964 Civil Rights Act, following a complaint made since the outbreak of the Israel-Hamas conflict. The investigation is part of a series looking into allegations of discrimination, including antisemitism, anti-Muslim, anti-Arab, or shared ancestry violations. However, the district spokesperson stated that the complaint, related to a single school, is not about antisemitism. The probe could lead to a plan for compliance with Title VI or, if necessary, federal enforcement action, although such actions in education are rare. The investigation follows the Biden-Harris Administration's effort to address rising reports of discrimination in educational institutions. STORY 5: Cobb CIDs Chip in for Education Campaign on Transit Tax Referendum Two Cobb County Community Improvement Districts (CIDs) are allocating $50,000 each to support an "educational outreach" campaign aimed at voters for next year's transit sales tax referendum. The Cumberland CID and Town Center CID are contributing, and the Cobb County commissioners will be asked for $187,000 for the campaign. The proposed sales tax, known as the Mobility Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (M-SPLOST), would fund transit programs in Cobb over 10 or 30 years, with a centerpiece of a bus rapid transit network. The campaign aims to educate citizens about the potential benefits of the M-SPLOST. We'll be back in a moment Break: DRAKE – INGLES 1 STORY 6: 'Made Marietta A Beautiful Place To Live': Marietta Citizen Of The Year Announced Bonnie Buckner Reavis has been named Marietta's 2023 Citizen of the Year in recognition of her significant contributions to the arts in the city. Reavis serves as the executive director of the Marietta Arts Council, playing a key role in initiatives like the creation of downtown murals, the annual Mountain to River TrailFest, and securing art installations along the Mountain to River Trail. The award was presented by Marietta Mayor Steve Tumlin, who commended Reavis for her dedication to the artistic and cultural life of Marietta. Reavis expressed gratitude and highlighted the importance of the arts in building and reflecting community spirit. STORY 7: General Assembly passes Republican-drawn congressional map The Georgia House, controlled by Republicans, has passed a new congressional map in response to a federal judge's ruling that the existing map violated the Voting Rights Act. The map was approved along party lines, with a 98-71 vote, and is now awaiting Governor Brian Kemp's signature. The new map creates an additional Black-majority district in western metro Atlanta, addressing the judge's order. However, House Democrats argue that Republicans are eliminating a "coalition" congressional district through political gerrymandering. The new map is expected to face legal challenges, with critics expressing disappointment and vowing to address non-compliance in court. The Atlanta Story podcast features meaningful stories of Atlanta's builders, creators, and entrepreneurs. In this episode Jon Birdsong sits down with Victoria Lemos, Founder of Archive Atlanta. Born and raised in New York, Victoria moved to Atlanta 18 years ago and since then has become a prolific podcaster through Archive Atlanta. Two hundred and thirty episodes later, Victoria has covered everything from the most underrated neighborhood – which we discussed, to the quirky stories in the cracks and crevices of Atlanta's history rarely told. Other topics in today's interview include, the three buildings everyone in Atlanta should visit, the best park, why she gravitates towards specific stories, how history rhymes with the past today, and much more. The Atlanta Story is put together by the folks at Atlanta Ventures -- and we can't wait to share some of the personalities behind the brand. Atlanta Ventures invests in entrepreneurs through community, content, and capital -- most notably through our Studio with companies like Greenzie and Intown Golf Club. We believe the best entrepreneurs learn from other great artists in different fields. In this episode, we discuss… Why Victoria started the Atlanta Archive. (1:35) Do the subjects drive the time period or does the time period drive the subjects? (4:55) Let's talk about zoning. Can you share a primer for our listeners who may not know the importance of it today and the historical significance as well. (6:14) The most interesting cemetery to you? Introduction: Welcome to Five & Thrive: a weekly podcast highlighting the Southeast's most interesting news, entrepreneurs, and information of the week, all under 5 minutes. My name is Jon Birdsong and I'm with Atlanta Ventures. Product Release of the Week: Who doesn't love a good product release and this week, after much anticipated industry coverage, Greenzie has pushed a major update to their software. Quick reminder about Greenzie, they are a software company that makes commercial lawn mowers autonomous. They have partnered with manufacturers including Wright Manufacturing and Bobcat to build the mowers with a few more bells and whistles so they can be activated into autonomous mowers. Landscapers love them, especially landscapers who mow big, wide open fields. This week, Greenzie launched a major update to their software including: Job saving and reloading: Map an area once and mow all season with the press of a button on an easy-to-use interface with no app download required. So now a lawn maintenance company can mow the perimeter of a property once and it's saved in the database so you don't have to mow the perimeter again. Before, you had to mow the perimeter each time. Not any more. Another major feature is job continuation. If your mower or job was interrupted now you can pick up where you left off with ease. Before it would start over from the beginning. These are huge workflow updates along with several other enhancements! Congrats to the Greenzie engineering team on delivering to the market. Quiet Giant of the Week: This company just moved their HQ to 999 Peachtree Street which is 10th and Peachtree, right where Empire State South used to be. The name of the company is called FIXD Automotive. They have approximately 40 employees led by CEO, John Gattusso. Fixd is a hardware and software company that offers drivers the tools and resources that produce money saved and peace-of-mind over the life of their car. Their FIXD Sensor, which works with any gas-powered car since 1996 relays car problems from the vehicle to the FIXD App via Bluetooth. With the FIXD sensor, now you can translate 7000+ engine codes into plain English on your smartphone, see how severe your issue is, access detailed repair guides and how-to videos, monitor the health of multiple vehicles, and receive automated maintenance alerts. FIXD started out of Create-X and has been a Quiet Giant, growing steadily and quietly for years. Question of the Week: We've been getting asked a bunch recently, what is Atlanta Ventures take on Artificial Intelligence? There is no question AI is a transformative evolution in technology. There will be several jobs and roles augmented and alleviated. From a pure consumer perspective, we are users of ChatGPT and Dall-E2 and explore those applications often. When it comes to pure investment in the space, it all depends on how AI is being applied. For example, last week, we invested in AdPipe out of Athens, Ga. They are Motion-First marketing platform that goes and finds specific types of clips in your video library, clips them into 2 second gifs, makes it easy to add overlays and copy, and then packages them up so marketers and sales reps now have a motion-first, customized piece of content. The engineering team is leveraging AI to find those specific clips. For example, one of their most well-known clients is Caterpillar. AdPipe now uses AI to find “videos of tractors” in Caterpillar's video library and within 30 seconds, AI has gone in and found dozens of videos from years of investment and delivered it to the AdPipe platform. Before AI, someone manually would have to go into the Caterpillar library, watch a lot of video for a few seconds to find tractor clips, clip it, and then upload it to AdPipe. Not anymore. One other point around narrative and storytelling on the fundraising side to highlight with AdPipe; they didn't brand themselves as a Generative-AI marketing platform when we first engaged with them. They were already solving a very real problem in the market with dozens of industrial customers. Instead, they are using AI to improve a specific use case and workflow. If we met a company that had no customers, limited product or revenue, and they positioned their product as an Generative-AI marketing platform, this is when our spidey senses would have heighted and immediately questioned if this was a spin on a piece of innovative technology looking for a problem to solve. All said and done, when it comes to AI, make sure the problem being solved is a real pain point and apply it smartly – a good example is the AdPipe product. Annnnd that is five minutes! More than 150 people were eager to listen to the night's keynote speaker, Erica Armstrong Dunbar, author of “She Came to Slay: The Life and Times of Harriet Tubman.” Councilman Lewis Wheaton welcomed and thanked the guests for coming, reminding them that the proceeds from the evening would benefit the foundations for Griffin and Campbell middle schools, before introducing Dunbar to loud applause. Dunbar's goal was to reintroduce people to Harriet Tubman. Tubman is best known as the most famous conductor of the Underground Railroad — a network of secret routes slaves used during the 1800s to escape to freedom. Tubman would make the journey to lead people out of enslavement at least 13 times. Dunbar discussed how the Black Lives Matter movement reminds Americans of the people and names who have been and continue to be lost to violence, adding that social reform is an ongoing process. With her book, Dunbar said she was trying to tell the story of a complex woman who dedicated her life to social justice, and how her influence still inspires new generations. After the presentation, a long line formed to get books autographed by the author, particularly some young readers, who remarked that they really loved hearing about Harriet Tubman. Several hundred people ran full tilt into Lake Acworth on Saturday — some of them in costume. The brisk excursion was part of the “Polar Plunge,” an annual national fundraiser for the Special Olympics. The money will help run and sponsor athletes for the state's Special Olympics, which will be at Emory University in May. The event was jointly organized by the Special Olympics of Georgia and Law Enforcement Torch Run, a long-running campaign among law enforcement professionals who support the Special Olympics. Several local law enforcement agencies raised money and submerged officers and staff, including the Kennesaw and Acworth police departments, and the Cobb County Sheriff's Department, the latter of which won the costume contest by riding into the lake on toy horses. The water temperature inside the lake was estimated to be in the upper 50s. Matthew Wynne, a Special Olympics athlete who grew up in Alpharetta, said the cold water is part of what makes the event fun, and he wouldn't have minded if the water had been more frigid. Georgia Milton-Sheats, CEO of Special Olympics Georgia since 1999, ran into the lake alongside other Special Olympics organizers. She said almost 500 people raised money and registered for the plunge, and the event raised more than $230,000. State Senator Ed Setzler, filed legislation this week to reimpose Republicans' county commission district map on the Cobb Board of Commissioners. Senate Bill 236 mirrors the map passed last year by the General Assembly and signed into law by Governor Brian Kemp, which drew Democratic Commissioner Jerica Richardson out of her seat. The proposal comes after Setzler filed a bill — SB 124 — explicitly prohibiting Georgia counties from drawing their own district lines, which the commission's Democrats have been working to do since October. If passed, the tandem bills could overrule the Democrats' “home rule” effort designed to amend the district lines and keep Richardson in office. Though Republican officials, including Attorney General Chris Carr, have said the home rule bid is unconstitutional, Richardson and her two Democratic colleagues on the Cobb Board of Commissioners maintain the effort is legal. Richardson said were the legislation to be passed, it would end her tenure on the board. East Cobb resident Larry Savage, meanwhile, challenged the constitutionality of the home rule effort in a lawsuit filed just before the new year. That lawsuit was later withdrawn, with Savage saying a follow-up suit was forthcoming. That suit, however, has yet to materialize. Savage last said he was working with a new attorney but did not respond to a request for comment this week. Andrew Young Jr., former ambassador to the United Nations, former congressman, past mayor of Atlanta and civil rights icon, will be the keynote speaker at the Georgia Symphony Orchestra's annual Celebrity Luncheon fundraiser. The event will take place March 18 from noon to 3 p.m. at the Marietta Country Club. Ambassador Young will be joined by a group of local artists, authors, musicians and business leaders. Proceeds from the event will benefit the GSO's musical performance, youth education and outreach programs. Not only are guests certain to be inspired by Ambassador Young, but they also will select to be seated at a table with one of a carefully curated collection of influential and creative area personalities to learn more about them. A specially created three-course menu will be prepared by Gary Sanderson, Marietta Country Club executive chef, and his team. The event also will provide a fantastic opportunity for guests to indulge themselves from among an array of silent and live auction goods, such as rare trinkets and tidbits, fine art and everyday splurges. On March 11, Cobb County will be well represented in the 139th Atlanta St. Patrick's Parade as it marches down Peachtree Street in Midtown Atlanta. Ten local groups will participate in one the largest St. Patrick's parades in the Southeast, which draws hundreds of parade watchers from around the region. The parade will begin at noon at the intersection of Peachtree Street and 15th Street and will continue down Peachtree to 5th Street, concluding at 1:30 p.m. The Cobb County Groups are: - the 116th Army Band, Artz for the Harp, Atlanta Freedom Band, Atlanta Gaelic Athletic Association, Cosplay Volunteers of Atlanta, DREAM Dachshund Rescue, Firefighters Emerald Society of Metropolitan Atlanta, Georgia Smoke Diver Association, MIB DragonCon Parade Crew and Twilight Twirlers of Marietta #CobbCounty #Marietta #LocalNews - - - - The Marietta Daily Journal Podcast is local news for Marietta, Kennesaw, Smyrna, and all of Cobb County. Escuchar audio
On December 15, 1921, gunshots echoed across Atlanta's famous Peachtree Street moments before a handsome young man darted away from Kaiser's Jewelers. Frank DuPre left in his wake a dead Pinkerton guard and a missing ring. As Christmas shoppers looked on in panic, he raced through the Kimball House Hotel and shot another victim. The brazen events terrified a crime-filled city already on edge. A manhunt captured the nineteen-year-old, unemployed DuPre, who faced a quick conviction and a hanging sentence. Months of appeals pitted a prosecutor demanding some "good old-fashioned rope" against "maudlin sentimentalists" and "sob sisters." Author Tom Hughes recounts the true harrowing story behind the legend of one of the last men hanged in Atlanta. Tuesday on Political Rewind: It has been 50 years since Atlanta's first gay Pride parade kicked off on Peachtree Street in Atlanta. Compared to its recent iterations, the march was a small event. At the time, homosexuality was illegal under Georgia law and members of the LGTBQ community typically lived lives in the shadows. But on June 27, 1971, they congregated in Atlanta to publicly demand an end to persecution. The years since have seen a slow but dramatic transformation in laws and societal understanding of the LGBTQ community in Georgia and across the country, though obstacles to true equality still remain. On today's show, we reflected on the atmosphere that surrounded the first public stirring of gay pride among demonstrators, on Peachtree Street marchers, and looked at just how far LGBTQ rights have come in the half century since. Panelists: Taylor Alxndr — Co-Founder and Executive Director of Southern Fried Queer Pride, Musician and Drag Performer Tamar Hallerman — Senior Reporter, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution Jeff Graham — Executive Director, Georgia Equality Shannon Clawson — Statewide Outreach Manager, Georgia Equality

Keto at Longhorn SteakhouseLongHorn Steakhouse got its start back in 1981. It has an interesting story. George McKerrow, Jr. and his best friend Brian partnered up to try this idea. McKerrow had managed other restaurants before. The first location opened on Peachtree Street in Atlanta, Georgia. It had previously been an antique store, then turned into an adult entertainment business. Because of that, the walls were still painted black. Some of the booths still had black partitions. The walls were covered with western decorations and steer heads. The menu featured steaks grilled in a butter sauce. It was across the street from a popular hangout spot for two well known newspaper columnists, Ron Hudspeth and Lewis Grizzard. The two guys would go to Longhorn after drinks and got to know the owner. One day, there was a sudden snow storm that totally shut down the roads and stranded thousands of people in the area. McKerrow offered $1 drinks and food specials to stranded motorists. The columnist wrote about Mckerrow's kindness. The restaurant, which had been struggling, then took off. The rest is history. Back to the Keto at Longhorn Steakhouse. There are many meat options available. BUT, all of their seasoning blends and sauces contain sugar. Make sure to ask that all dishes, including sides, be seasoned only with salt, pepper, garlic, or whatever. Just don’t let them use their premade stuff. Good morning, it's Monday, March 2nd. I’m Lucas Dixon and here are today's headlines from the Atlanta Journal-Constitution: We could see a couple of showers this afternoon. But otherwise, it will cloudy and cooler, with a high of 55 and a low tonight of 53. Our top story: A note greeted parishioners at the entrance of the Basilica of the Sacred Heart of Jesus on Peachtree Street yesterday. And it included a memo from Bishop Joel M.
The missing middle continues to be a hot topic as it pertains to housing, but the missing middle also applies to commercial spaces. Principals of Track West Partners Matt Widmaier and Brett Merrill join Co-Hosts Carol Morgan and Todd Schnick on this week's All About Real Estate segment of Atlanta Real Estate Forum Radio to discuss their firm and latest project at 400 Bishop. Track West Partners is a full-service real estate firm focused on development in the Atlanta-area's commercial, retail, multifamily, office and mixed-use spaces. Comprised of three diversely skilled principals, the firm is uniquely positioned to add value to neighborhoods through thoughtful development opportunities. Currently under construction, 400 Bishop neighbors Georgia Tech's pool of 26,000+ students and the growing millennial workforce in Midtown Atlanta. The seven-story, loft-office commercial project is located near Atlanta Station on Bishop Street. “400 Bishop was really birthed from the idea that there's really a missing middle in the market on the West Midtown area,” Widmaier said. “You've got a lot of very high-profile, fantastic, office/mixed-use developments that are coming out of the ground right now, and you've also seen a resurgence of adaptive, reused product, both of which have garnered a lot of attention.” According to Matt, there is still a sizable group of tenants that want to move in close to the talent pool, close to Georgia Tech, that don't really have a place if they don't fit into one of those two categories. 400 Bishop is an opportunity to provide a space for those tenants to come to, both in the new building environment, but maybe not at the same highwater rent marks that larger locations are demanding. With 130,000 square feet of loft office space available, 400 Bishop features 14- to 18-foot floor-to-floor heights with direct access from the parking garage, building signage rights and three unique floorplates ranging from 7,000 to 10,000 and up to 30,000 square feet. Amenities at 400 Bishop will include exclusive tenant balconies, onsite food, beverage and entertainment on the first floor, rooftop terraces and 52+ restaurants, 18+ shops and six hotels all within a 1-mile radius. Conveniently located off Peachtree Street and Northside Drive, 400 Bishop also offers easy access to I-75 and I-85 as well as Buckhead, West Midtown, Midtown, Downtown Atlanta and East Cobb. With tenants expected to begin moving in at the end of 2020 into early 2021, construction is currently underway at 400 Bishop. To get the scoop on what else to expect at this new project, including dining options and a brewery, listen to the full interview above. Steve believes his restaurants were one of the first to turn retail centers to places to be because of the hospitality and food. His first Atlanta restaurant was on Peachtree Street, which in the mid-70's had been nearly abandoned, and his second was in Phipps Plaza, which was emptying of retail. Within 6 months of the restaurant opening, every retail space was leased. They were creating places through hospitality, and Steve knew when building Serenbe that they needed to have a place for people to gather around food. That first place was the Blue Eyed Daisy Bakeshop.Next was the architecture and design. Steve knew those two things could affect the attitude of visitors and potential residents, so he wanted Serenbe's design to reflect the message of what this place represents. We think of charm in architecture as being old buildings, but Steve realized it's really the scale, massing and how they fit together on the street, which could be replicated. He also realized developers had been building neighborhoods thinking of it just as a development, while he was more inspired by small towns. Because of this, Steve wanted Serenbe to have the variety that you would see in a town instead of a cookie-cutter neighborhood. After civil engineers have staked and graded each street, Steve and Phill Tabb walk through with a lot map and determined how far each house will sit from the curb and how tall the house will need to be for the rooflines to flow together. They then organize each transect so the movement from urban to rural atmosphere in Serenbe feels gradual. There are 5 within the first half mile in Serenbe. First you come from natural nature, 20-feet of undisturbed nature, into a place where houses are back in the woods. Then they introduce curbs, crosswalks and streetlights, and the houses start to form an urban wall with those on one side a step down from the hill and the other side a step up from the stream bed. Next you'll see homes with front porches all the same distance from the curb so it makes a more organized line. After that you'll see three-story live works that gradually go to four-stories that have retail, restaurants and residents all mixed together. In fact, the corner of Selborne Lane and Flynn Ridge has a single-family home, attached homes and retail spaces all in one intersection, which even in the most progressive cities is still not allowed because of zoning laws. Steve also wanted to plan the community around foot paths he'd seen in small English villages. Rather than designing to accommodate cars, he wanted it to be more efficient to walk between Serenbe neighborhoods using the trail system. This is why each neighborhood is shaped like an omega, allowing every front door to open to your neighbors and community (with front porches pulled close to the street for ease of communication) and every back door to give you access to nature. Most important, Steve wanted Serenbe to exude the beauty of nature. There are so many small things that people don't think about in their daily lives that add visual and noise pollution, and Steve wanted to remove those. You won't see trash cans and mail boxes along the streets in front of homes. You won't see large front lawns. He was inspired by Ryan Gainey to put houses within a garden of nature rather than design homes around landscaping and lawns.Questions Answered:What is placemaking? How does scale and massing in architecture contribute to the authentic feel of a place? What is a condition sheet? What is a thornbird transect? How does Serenbe differ from typical New Urbanism? Why did Steve Nygren design the streets after omegas? Why does traditional Southern architecture incorporate porches? How do porches in Serenbe encourage community engagement? How can a mail house add to a sense of place?Wher
The High Museum of Art, an Atlanta treasure, attracts visitors of all ages, serving as a leading art museum in the Southeastern United States. On today's Around Atlanta segment of Atlanta Real Estate Forum Radio, the High's Head of Museum Interpretation Julia Forbes joins co-hosts Carol Morgan and Todd Schnick to discuss the museum and its Greene Learning Gallery. Always offering visitors something new to see, the museum currently has over 1,400 works of art on view and ever-evolving exhibits. As a part of the museum's 50-year-long commitment to having a dedicated space for families in its galleries, the High opened a new installation of the Greene Family Learning Gallery in October of 2018, doubling the space's size. The Greene Family Learning Gallery serves as a place where families can explore their creativity together in fun activity areas. These discovery activity areas are inspired by some of the most popular objects in the Museum's collection. “Families want to make personal meaning together,” Forbes said. “They want to build a memory; they want something they can talk about and they want to do something together.” Originally founded in 1905 as the Atlanta Art Association, the High received its first permanent home in 1926, when Mrs. Joseph M. High donated her family's residence on Peachtree Street. Perfectly located in Atlanta's arts district in Midtown, the High is a division of the Woodruff Arts Center. In 2010 it had 509,000 visitors, 95th among world art museums. The High Museum of Art is located at 1280 Peachtree Street NE in Atlanta. Atlanta is filled with locations and destinations that make it special, and the High Museum of Art is one of them! The High Museum Head of Museum Interpretation Julia Forbes joins co-hosts Carol Morgan and Todd Schnick on this week's Around Atlanta segment of Atlanta Real Estate Forum Radio to discuss the museum and the European Masterworks: The Phillips Collection. Located in Atlanta, the High Museum of Art is a top art museum in the Southeastern region. Perfectly located in Atlanta's arts district in Midtown, the High is a division of the Woodruff Arts Center. In 2010 it had 509,000 visitors, 95th among world art museums. Originally founded in 1905 as the Atlanta Art Association, the High Museum of Art received its first permanent home in 1926, when Mrs. Joseph M. High donated her family's residence on Peachtree Street. Currently on display at the High as its only Southeastern stop, the European Works: The Phillips Collection showcases the revolutionary collecting approach of Duncan Phillips with 75 paintings and sculptures. Phillips is most known for opening the first museum of modern art in the United States in 1921 and serving as the founding director of The Phillips Collection in Washington, DC. Beginning with 19th-century influences and moving through the present, Phillips initiated his mission to define modern arts and its origins by adding a gallery to his family's Georgian Revival home. Phillips brought artists together from different places and times to “trace their common descent from old masters who anticipated modern ideas,” by grouping works by their aesthetic nature. On display now, The European Works: The Phillips Collection will be on display through July 14, 2019. Click here to learn more about pricing or visit www.High.org to explore the complete offerings available at the museum. YOU ARE ALREADY MISSED MY FRIENDAs a native Atlantan, I have very fond memories of seeing Tom Mullica perform at his magic bar on Peachtree Street, The Tom Foolery. I am sad to report that today, we lost one of magic's great performers and a genuinely nice guy. When we recorded this, Tom had been battling leukemia, but it was in remission and Tom was preparing to renew his Red Skelton tribute show in Branson. There was recent talk about the opening of a new Tom Foolery on Las Vegas as well. I am so happy to have had the chance to share this moment with Tom and can only say that I am so sorry to not have had more time with him.
Gene explores some of Atlantas most vibrant creative spaces - including the corporate headquarters of the Grammy Award Winning Zac Brown Band, the newly opening Museum of Design Atlanta, GA Tech's newest architectural gem, and some of Atlantas best regarded and most dynamic restaurants. Guests on this episode include Bob Amick of Concentrics Restaurants, Allison Hyer of Hyer Creative (and the brains behind Zac Browns corporate headquarters), historian and Assistant Dean with the Georgia Tech College of Architecture Leslie Sharp, and Perkins + Will designer Bruce McEvoy
There is Broadway in New York, Michigan Avenue in Chicago, Sunset in LA, and Bourbon in New Orleans, but Peachtree Street is more than famous, it is a living, breathing, archeological diorama of Atlanta’s history told through its transitioning neighborhoods and ascending architecture. This episode of Sidewalk Radio, brought to you by Perkins+Will, explores the history, lore, legacy, culture and character of a street whose name really came from a pine tree. See, it’s already getting interesting.

The good news is that the cancer is now in remission and Tom is preparing to renew is Red Skelton tinute show in Branson next year.
